  • Samsung enable Linux on their phones — Linux desktops will become available if users plug their phones into the DeX Station, the device that lets a Galaxy 8 run a Samsung-created desktop-like environment when connected to the DeX and an external monitor
  • Purism Now Shipping Their Laptops With Intel ME Disabled — Purism has announced today all laptops to be shipping from their company will now have the Intel Management Engine (ME) disabled.
  • Purism partner with Nextcloud on end-to-end encrypted storage — Purism plans to include Nextcloud in the Librem 5 phone, as well as within PureOS for its Librem 13 and Librem 15 laptops. Additionally, Purism will be discussing with Nextcloud about a future Purism NAS that runs completely free software including Nextcloud and services.
  • LVFS/fwupd need donations — At the moment the secure part of the LVFS is hosted in a dedicated Scaleway instance, so any additional donations would be spent on paying this small bill and perhaps more importantly buying some (2nd hand?) hardware to include as part of our release-time QA checks.
  • Linux Kernel Community Enforcement Statement — It adopts the same termination provisions we are all familiar with from GPL-3.0 as an Additional Permission giving companies confidence that they will have time to come into compliance if a failure is identified. Their ability to rely on this Additional Permission will hopefully re-establish user confidence and help direct enforcement activity back to the original purpose we have all sought over the years — actual compliance.
  • Ubuntu 17.10 released — Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including
a new 4.13-based kernel, glibc 2.26, gcc 7.2, and much more.
Ubuntu Desktop has had a major overhaul, with the switch from Unity as
our default desktop to GNOME3 and gnome-shell.
  • Happy 13th Birthday — Ubuntu 4.10 ‘Warty Warthog’ wasn’t the most glamorous looking release, but it offered open-source enthusiasts of the day a simple, straightforward install from a single CD. The distro was notable for trying to “detect as much hardware as possible, simplifying the X install.”
GNOME 2.8, Firefox 0.9, Evolution 2.0 and OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 were among the software assembled for the formative release.
  • Ubuntu MATE — After six months of tireless work we present Ubuntu MATE 17.10, by far the best release we’ve ever produced.
  • Xubuntu — Accelerated video playback with Intel hardware should now work more reliably out of the box.

Malware found preinstalled on 38 Android phones used by 2 companies

  • Malicious apps were surreptitiously added somewhere along the supply chain.

  • Check Point didn’t disclose the names of the companies that owned the infected phones. One of the affected parties was a “large telecommunications company” and the other was a “multinational technology company.”

  • It’s interesting how this came on out March 10 and the WikiLeaks notice about compromised cellphones came out a few days earlier. Coincidence?

“Vault 7” by WikiLeaks

  • A total of 8,761 documents have been published as part of ‘Year Zero’, the first in a series of leaks the whistleblower organization has dubbed ‘Vault 7.’ WikiLeaks said that ‘Year Zero’ revealed details of the CIA’s “global covert hacking program,” including “weaponized exploits” used against company products including “Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows and even Samsung TVs, which are turned into covert microphones.”

  • Among the more notable disclosures which, if confirmed, “would rock the technology world”, the CIA had managed to bypass encryption on popular phone and messaging services such as Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram. According to the statement from WikiLeaks, government hackers can penetrate Android phones and collect “audio and message traffic before encryption is applied.”

  • NOTE: From what I’ve read, this compromise involves first compromising the phone in question and as such is not an attack on the apps themselves.

  • Kreb’s coverage

  • Krebs says: “The documents for the most part don’t appear to include the computer code needed to exploit previously unknown flaws in these products, although WikiLeaks says those exploits may show up in a future dump. This collection is probably best thought of as an internal corporate wiki used by multiple CIA researchers who methodically found and documented weaknesses in a variety of popular commercial and consumer electronics.”

  • Krebs also says: “Some of the exploits discussed in these leaked CIA documents appear to reference full-on, remote access vulnerabilities. However, a great many of the documents I’ve looked at seem to refer to attack concepts or half-finished exploits that may be limited by very specific requirements — such as physical access to the targeted device.”

  • See also Espionage vs. Surveillance

  • Best advice: patch your shit, secure physical access, it is not as bad as WikiLeaks is making it out to be.

Samsung Planning To Replace Android With Linux-based Tizen OS On All Smartphones

The largest Android smartphone manufacturer Samsung is considering a shift from Google’s Android mobile operating system. According to a report, the South Korean tech giant is planning to expand its homegrown Tizen OS to all of its devices in future.

The executive said that Samsung launched Samsung Z1 and Z3 in the Indian market to see Tizen’s performance. “Samsung’s Z-branded Tizen-powered phones are popular with Indian consumers. During the first quarter of this year, Samsung sold about 64 million phones there. This means that Tizen is proving its competitiveness,” said the executive.

Apart from smartphones and smartwatches, the Korean giant wants to use Tizen in the Internet of Things applications. The company is soon looking to expand Tizen’s reach to more household devices like cameras, televisions, smart refrigerators etc.

Universal “snap” packages launch on multiple Linux distros

“We hope today’s announcement will be surprising because it’s not about Ubuntu,” Shuttleworth said in a press calls held earlier today.

Ubuntu’s “snappy” new way of packaging applications is no longer exclusive to Ubuntu. Canonical today is announcing that snapd, the tool that allows snap packages to be installed on Ubuntu, has been ported to other Linux distributions including Debian, Arch, Fedora, and Gentoo among others.
