Our Runs Linux from HDR Photography on Linux | LAS s30e06 | January 19, 2014

  • Many large Commercial software vendors are transitioning to a subscription model. Does this create an even great lockin for schools?

  • One-to-One programs are very expensive, and the argument I’ve always heard was: Must use Windows, must use Office. Have get the kids ready for the “real world” that uses those tools. Is there a sound argument to that “concern”?

  • Linux and open source give students the ability to go very deep into how the computer works, if they are motivated and want to embrace their inquisitive nature. How far down the rabbit hole are your young Linux users permitted to go? How much can they explore?

  • Can you tell us how the Fast Linux Deployment Toolkit was created, and what it does?

  • What are some of the most useful open source software and tools you, or the students use?

  • What is the biggest road block others should expect?

Charlie Reisinger of Penn Manor gives talk at All Things Open 2014 | Opensource.com

Charlie Reisinger from the Penn Manor School District talked to us next about open source at his school. This talk was an expanded version of his lightning talk from the previous night.

Penn Manor has nine IT team members which is a very lean staff for 4500 devices. They also do a lot of their technology in house. But, before we talk about open source, Charlie took a tangent into the nature of education today. He says that school districts are so stuck on the model they’re using and have used for centuries, but today kids can learn anything they would like with a simple connection to the Internet. You can be connected to the most brilliant minds that you’d like, so teachers are no longer the fountains of all knowledge. A glaring gap in this evolution is that the classroom hasn’t been transformed by technology; if you walked into a classroom 60 years ago, it would look pretty much like a classroom today.

Enabling students in a digital age: Charlie Reisinger at TEDxLancaster – YouTube

Charlie Reisinger, an innovative IT Director for Penn Manor school district in Lancaster County, shows how to provide affordable, new digital technologies to high school students. The answer is not only a cost-effective way to improve the quality of education, it is opening students’ minds.

1:1 Laptop Program | PM Technology Blog

During the 2012-2013 school year, a committee comprised of faculty, administrators and a school board liaison worked to evaluate the viability of a district 1:1 computing program. After several months of internal discussion and public board presentations, a recommendation to proceed with a 1:1 laptop program at Penn Manor High School was unanimously approved at the April 1, 2013 school board meeting. The recommendation called for the program to commence with a pilot during the Fall of 2013. The full building implementation began in January 2014. At that time, each full-time high school student was provided with a personal laptop computer for use throughout the school day and at home.

FBI created fake Seattle Times Web page to nab bomb-threat suspect

The FBI in Seattle created a fake news story on a bogus Seattle Times web page to plant software in the computer of a suspect in a series of bomb threats to Lacey’s Timberline High School in 2007, according to documents obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in San Francisco.

The deception was publicized Monday when Christopher Soghoian, the principal technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union in Washington, D.C., revealed it on Twitter.

The EFF documents reveal that the FBI dummied up a story with an Associated Press byline about the Thurston County bomb threats with an email link “in the style of The Seattle Times,” including details about subscriber and advertiser information.

The link was sent to the suspect’s MySpace account. When the suspect clicked on the link, the hidden FBI software sent his location and Internet Protocol information to the agents. A juvenile suspect was identified and arrested June 14.

Court filing: FBI impersonated repairmen in ruse

Submitted by: veritanuda

Federal agents turned off Internet access to three luxury villas at a Las Vegas hotel then impersonated repair technicians to surreptitiously get inside and collect evidence in an investigation of online sports betting, according to defense lawyers challenging the practice.

Feds identify suspected ‘second leaker’ for Snowden reporters

Headlined “Barack Obama’s Secret Terrorist-Tracking System, by the Numbers,” the story cited a classified government document showing that nearly half the people on the U.S. government’s master terrorist screening database had “no recognized terrorist affiliation.”

The story, co-authored by Jeremy Scahill and Ryan Devereaux, was accompanied by a document “obtained from a source in the intelligence community” providing details about the watch-listing system that were dated as late as August 2013, months after Snowden fled to Hong Kong and revealed himself as the leaker of thousands of top secret documents from the NSA.

This prompted immediate speculation that there was a “second leaker” inside the U.S. intelligence community providing material to Greenwald and his associates.

Marysville school shooter remembered along with victims

Among the balloons and flowers tied to the chain-link fence outside Marysville-Pilchuck High School are these: a white wrestling shoe; a youth football team photo, with one player encased in a red-marker heart; and a candle covered with a plastic cup bearing the name “Jaylen.”

They are all tributes to Jaylen Fryberg, the popular 15-year-old freshman who texted five friends to invite them to lunch Friday and then gunned them down at a table in the school’s cafeteria.

Two girls died in the attack, and three other students – including two of Fryberg’s cousins – were gravely wounded. Fryberg died after shooting himself.

US ends ban on ‘domestic propaganda’ — RT USA

The Smith-Mundt Act has ensured for decades that government-made media intended for foreign audiences doesn’t end up on radio networks broadcast within the US. An amendment tagged onto the National Defense Authorization Act removed that prohibition this year

The longstanding federal law made it illegal for the US Department of State to share domestically the internally-authored news stories sent to American-operated
outlets broadcasting around the globe. All of that changed effective July 2, when the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) was given permission to let US households tune-in to hear the
type of programming that has previously only been allowed in outside nations.

How Afghan poppies become heroin

But most opium appears to be purchased directly from the farmers by buyers and dealers. In a range of complex credit agreements based on advance-sale of opium harvests, many farmers are already committed to particular dealers and merchants by the time they accumulate their yield.

Then the opium enters the black market. A merchant or broker buys the packages for transport to a morphine ‘refinery’. According to author Alfred W. McCoy in ‘The Politics of Heroin’, most traffickers do their morphine refining close to the poppy fields, since compact morphine bricks are much easier to smuggle than bundles of pungent, jelly-like opium. At the refinery, which may be little more than a small house or shack equipped with oil drums, the opium is mixed with lime in boiling water. A white band of morphine forms on the surface, while a precipitate of organic waste sinks to the bottom. The morphine is drawn off, reheated with ammonia, filtered and boiled again until it is reduced to a brown paste. Poured into moulds and dried in the sun, it is now morphine base. Morphine base can be smoked in a pipe or is ready for further processing into heroin.

Allegations of CIA drug trafficking – CIA and Kuomintang opium smuggling operations

CIA and Kuomintang opium smuggling operations[edit]

In order to provide covert funds for the Kuomintang (KMT) forces loyal to General Chiang Kai-shek, who were fighting the Chinese communists under Mao Zedong, the CIA helped the KMT smuggle opium from China and Burma to Bangkok, Thailand, by providing airplanes owned by one of their front businesses, Air America.

KMT general Sun Li Ren took charge of these forces, which controlled a region in between Burma and Thailand, but were eventually forced out of the area. The CIA later pressured Sun Li Ren to undertake a coup d’état in Taiwan against Chiang Kai-shek, but was discovered and placed under house arrest by Chiang’s son, Chiang Ching-kuo

Central Intelligence Agency Drug Trafficking

Research by Dr. Alfred W. McCoy, Gary Webb, and others has pointed to CIA involvement in narcotics trafficking across the globe, although the CIA officially denies such allegations.[172][173] During the Cold War, when numerous soldiers participated in transport of Southeast Asian heroin to the United States by the airline Air America[_citation needed_], the CIA’s role in such traffic was reportedly rationalized as “recapture” of related profits to prevent possible enemy control of such assets.

CIA Jet Crashed With 4 Tons Of Cocaine On Board

A Gulfstream II jet, aircraft # N987SA, allegedly used to transport Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) rendition prisoners from Europe and America to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba crash-landed Sept. 24, 2007 in Mexico carrying a cargo of over four tons of cocaine. It is suspected the Gulfstream jet ran out of fuel as it traveled from Colombia to the United States.

The Consequences Of America’s Invasion Of Afghanistan: NYC Heroin Deaths Highest In A Decade | Zero Hedge

While back in May Obama promised America’s mission in Afghanistan was over, and all US troops would leave the country by the end of 2016, the “unintended” consequences of the US presence in this favored by al-Qaeda country will haunt America for a long time. And especially New York, where according to a new report by the Department of Mental Hygiene, the number of people who died from unintentional heroin overdoses in New York City last year was the highest in over a decade.

High Note

2014 “Marijuana Midterms” to Establish 2016 as Most Crucial Year for Cannabis in America

Voters in Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Columbia will weigh in on whether their states should become second wave legalizers, with each confronting slightly different choices.

So, what can we expect at the ballot boxes next week? Polling suggests a real chance that all three proposals may pass, with Oregon and D.C. quite likely. Such moves come in the midst of political elites and the public at large slowly changing their orientation on the issue.

In both states and the District, legalizers are better funded than opponents. That monetary advantage and a sense of momentum created by Colorado and Washington’s experiences favors legalization. But the nature of midterm electorates, which tend to be older, more Republican, and more traditionally conservative, makes legalization a heavier political lift than in a Presidential election year. Looking at it a different way, as Hudak did in August, causation might also run in the opposite direction: marijuana legalization may help Democratic candidates in an otherwise poor year, with potentially enormous results through the Alaska Senate race.

In the end, regardless of what voters in Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Columbia decide on November 4th, we can expect the legalization movement to expand and for 2016 to be the most crucial year for cannabis in the United States.

AP Twitter account hacked

Anyone that follows the Associated Press on Twitter just heard \”news\” of an unprecedented national crisis. \”Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured,\” the AP\’s account tweeted moments ago.

Less than a month after social media received regulators\’ blessing to be a source for market- moving news, the hacking of the Associated Press\’s Twitter Inc. account is raising concerns over the trustworthiness of information spread via the microblogging site.

CISPA is Coming…?

According to data from the Sunlight Foundation, CISPA allies have spent $605 million on lobbying since 2011. The biggest spenders were the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which blew $163 million, and AT&T, which spent $34 million. In all, 52 groups donated at least $100,000 each to members of Congress.

Despite an $84 million lobbying effort, CISPA, the controversial bill aimed at making it easier for corporations to share customers\’ personal information with the government, faces an uncertain future after approval in the US House of Representatives.

Members of Congress who voted for CISPA last week have received threats of violence and had their phone numbers, addresses and other personal details posted online by those who disagree with the legislation.

A Twitter user called \”Grim Reaper\” wrote:

\”For your support of CISPA Rep. Mike Pompeo, the bill to end privacy, here is your dox\”

Then shared a document including the congressman\’s work address and phone number, military service and salary, and even his zodiac sign. The document was posted to Pastebin, a website favored by hackers like Anonymous.

Anonymous has been calling on all websites to blackout their
pages ever since the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act
(CISPA) passed the US House of Representatives on
Thursday.

Boston Bomb Run

While the fast-paced reporting of rumours, hyperbole and innuendo serves very little to the cause of informing and enlightening the millions who rely on cable news for information, it undoubtedly does well at generating widespread fear and hysteria. This is less the result of a grand conspiracy than of simple market economics. Throughout the crisis, ratings at major cable news stations surged – shooting up 194 percent from normal averages at CNN while also posting smaller yet still materially-significant gains at Fox News and MSNBC.

On Thursday night [Friday morning] at 12:45am EST. I was in my living room working on my computer when I heard multiple \”pops\” coming from outside. At that point, I had no idea that I was about to become an eye witness to the biggest news story in the country.

The journalist interviewed in this video describes naked man\’s capture near Nichols and Dexter, literally down the street from the shootout.

Naked man was apparently stripped, questioned, clothed, questioned some more, and reportedly let go. It\’s likely police stripped him because they were under citywide bomb threat and wanted to make sure he didn\’t have a suicide vest, but the police did not comment on that

\”This looks more to me like Columbine than it does al Qaeda,\” the counter terrorism expert observed. \”Two kids who radicalized between themselves in a closed circle go out and commit murder. I would charge these guys as murders, not terrorists.\”

Investigators are trying to determine whether the Boston Marathon bombing suspects used gunpowder from fireworks to create at least some of the bombs they spread across the finish line.

It has often been observed that the war on terror is unwinnable. After all, how could a war on an abstract noun ever have its \”Mission Accomplished\” moment? It is, according to this wisdom, meant to drag on forever.

Just because a war can\’t be won, however, doesn\’t mean it can\’t be lost. The truth is that the war on terror is over. And America has lost.

Poison Letters

No charges have been filed against Dutschke and he hasn\’t been arrested. Both he and Curtis, who had faced charges in the case, say they have no idea how to make the poisonous ricin and had nothing to do with sending the letters to President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi and a state judge.

Both were signed \”I am KC and I approve this message.\” It is a sign off phrase Curtis used frequently in Internet postings.

The Drone School

A drone school teaches students how to build and fly unmanned vehicles.

GOP Benghazi Report Blasts Hillary

Citing administration emails provided to the House committees, the 46-page report claims that \”to protect the State Department, the Administration deliberately removed references to al-Qaeda-linked groups and previous attacks in Benghazi in the talking points used by Ambassador Rice.\”

This has been a long game for the Republicans. They really want this has leverage over the Obama Administration. Not necessarily a bad play, but it seems like a bit of a weak hand politically. Though the more dirt they dig up, the better their case gets.

Fox News has spent more than half a year blaming the Obama administration for the tragic deaths of U.S. personnel in Benghazi and wielding that attack as a cudgel in an attempt to cause political damage. They have politicized the attack since day 1, claiming that the Obama administration\’s actions are directly responsible for the deaths and pushing conspiracies about administration officials deliberately misleading the public.

After being ordered by a DC circuit court to hold public rulemaking hearings for its Whole Body Imaging scanners more than a year ago, the TSA has finally opened the screening policy for public comment. As of today, the TSA has received more than 600 public comments, and online comments will be accepted through June 24th at 11:59 PM ET — you can file your own comments on the government\’s Regulations.gov website.
