  • Plasma Mobile Roadmap — Our development strategy is to build a basic system and platform around our core values first and then extend this.
  • Librem 5 progressing with Plasma Mobile — In general, Plasma Mobile already provides a usable (albeit alpha-quality) mobile interface today. The Qt Quick/QML based Kirigami component library and interface guidelines also provide a nice framework for mobile application developers
  • Firefox to remove canvas fingerprinting — The Mozilla Foundation is boosting privacy in an upcoming version of its Firefox browser by removing the snooping capability called canvas fingerprinting, a method of tracking users across multiple websites.
  • Tor flaw: TorMoil — TorMoil threatens Mac and Linux versions of Tor browser; Windows and Tails not affected.
  • Canonical joins GNOME Foundation Advisory Board — The GNOME Foundation is pleased to announce that Canonical, creator of the Ubuntu operating system, has joined the GNOME Foundation advisory board.
  • SCO vs. IBM Lives on — As Groklaw records, this case kicked off in 2003. The dispute centres on “Project Monterey” a joint effort by SCO and IBM to build a unified UNIX capable of running on several different microprocessor architectures. SCO — at that time known as the Santa Cruz Operation — sold versions of UNIX and tossed some of its source code into the Project Monterey mix, as did IBM. The parties signed a “joint development agreement” (JDA) to formalise the deal.
  • SFLC files a suit against Conservancy — This trademark action is in its early stages. SFLC filed a petition on September 22. Yesterday, we provided an answer that lists defenses that we plan to use.

How the Kodi Box Took Over Piracy | WIRED

_The Kodi box __pitch is hard to resist. A little black plastic square, in look not much different from a Roku or Apple TV, and similar in function as well. This streamer, though, offers something those others never will: Free access to practically any show or movie you can dream of. No rental fees. No subscriptions. Just type in the name of a blockbuster, and start watching a high-definition stream in seconds._

Flatpak 0.10 New Stable Series Adds Minor Improvements, 0.11 to Get New Features

“This is the first release in a new series of stable releases called 0.10.x. New features will be added to 0.11.x, and bugfixes will be backported to 0.10.x. During the early phase of the 0.10.x series we may also backport minor features, but we guarantee backwards compatibility,” said Alexander Larsson.

The State of AppCenter – elementary OS

This past May we released the major update to elementary OS that debuted the new pay-what-you-want app experience in AppCenter. In those past six months, we’ve seen over 50 apps released by developers.

AT&T is working on an open-sourced AI project with Linux Foundation

The nonprofit Linux Foundation has announced that is working on an open source AI project, and AT&T is one of the founding organizations. Called the Acumos Project, its goal, like many open source platforms, is to enable a free exchange of ideas and machine learning solutions using an artificial intelligence framework — and eventually become a marketplace for AI apps and services.

Canonical to Focus Mostly on Stability and Reliability for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

“At this early stage in the development cycle we’re spending a week or so tidying up the loose ends from 17.10, SRUing the important fixes that we’ve found, getting ready to sync new packages from Debian,” said Will Cooke in his latest weekly report. “As you know, 18.04 will be an LTS release and so we will be focusing on stability and reliability this cycle, as well as a few new features.”

#Ubuntu Desktop Manager at Canonical. High handicap golfer. Once got 9 letters.

I’ll be starting the weekly round-up posts again now that the release is out and 18.04 is getting under way. At this early stage in the development cycle we’re spending a week or so tidying up the loose ends from 17.10, SRUing the important fixes that we’ve found, getting ready to sync new packages from Debian, and generally doing the groundwork to give us a clear run at 18.04. As you know, 18.04 will be an LTS release and so we will be focusing on stability and reliability this cycle, as well as a few new features. I’ll give a more detailed view into 18.04 in the coming weeks.

This thread serves to inquire the community if there would be significant interest in the adoption and/or continuation of Unity 7. I very much welcome feedback from every member on this matter, and would be absolutely thrilled if we found a way to move forward with this!

Barton’s Blog | To the clouds and beyond…

Four and a half years ago a scrappy skunk works project by the name of “Project Sputnik” was kicked off at Dell to gauge interest in a developer-focused laptop. The project received an amazing amount of interest and support from the community and as result, nine months later this project became an official product — the ultra-mobile XPS 13 developer edition.

Avid father of 3. Founder & lead Project Sputnik (dev systems). Office of the CTO at Dell focusing on DevOps & Open Source. These insightful opinions are my own

Part of Project Sputnik, these systems began as an open-ended exploratory project to identify what you — developers — demand in an ideal laptop. With your input, Project Sputnik became an official product and continues to evolve.

In addition to our 6th generation Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition, we are introducing the next generation of the four systems that make up our Dell Precision Ubuntu-based line as well as added a new All-in-One offering. Additionally be sure to also check our portfolio of fixed Precision workstations (tower and rack) that are also available with Ubuntu.
