AsterisksNOW

Install Asterisk and start building custom telephony applications with AsteriskNOW. AsteriskNOW makes it easy to create custom telephony solutions by automatically installing the “plumbing.” It’s a complete Linux distribution with Asterisk, the DAHDI driver framework, and, the FreePBX administrative GUI. Much of the complexity of Asterisk and Linux is handled by the installer, the yum package management utility and the administrative GUI. With AsteriskNOW, application developers and integrators can concentrate on building solutions, not maintaining the plumbing.

The vulnerability resides only in the version end users use to connect to servers and not in versions used by servers. The bug is the result of code that enables an experimental roaming feature in OpenSSH versions 5.4 to 7.1

Right, this has been stopping me from sleeping from a while because it has wound me up quite a lot. (slightly sarcastic)

On a certain episode of L.U.P Chris questioned how Ubuntu applications (made with the Ubuntu SDK) would look on non Ubuntu desktop environments, and quite rightly so came to the conclusion of “well, they would look out of place”. Fine.

Lets stop right now and talk about something else, Gnome “Apps”. Gnome Apps are fucking shit under anything that isn’t Gnome, however nobody is giving Gnome a hard time over this. Gnome is shitting all over everyone else with their poorly designed applications and the Ubuntu Desktop and other desktops are suffering because of it.

Holy cookies I did it..

I created a Jupiter Broadcasting Meetup group. I was inspired by the idea of how nice it would be to have a rough idea of how many folks will be making it out to LFNW. Just to help with planning.

But I realized my long-term plans are a bit more ambitious. As the weather gets nice in the Seattle area, I’d like to hold semi-frequent meetups with Jupiter Colony members that are in the area. Maybe once a month, record them, or stream them. Eat, chat, maybe even create show content.

Also as we travel to other fests, or hit the road, I’d like to have a tool to suss out interest in your area.

So after LFNW I’d like to use the group for that kind of stuff, which sounds like a lot of fun to me!

“God View”: Uber Investigates Its Top New York Executive For Privacy Violations

Uber said Tuesday that it is investigating its top New York executive for tracking a BuzzFeed News reporter without her permission in violation of what the transit giant says has long been its privacy policy. The company also published its privacy policy for the first time on Tuesday, though it said the policy had always been in effect.

Uber took both actions in the wake of a BuzzFeed News story that revealed that the reporter’s ride had been tracked without her permission and that another Uber executive had suggested the company might smear journalists who wrote critically of Uber. The executive who suggested digging into the private lives of journalists, Emil Michael, said his comments were “wrong” and that he regrets them.

Tracking customers is easy using an internal company tool called “God View,” two former Uber employees told BuzzFeed News. They said God View, which shows the location of Uber vehicles and customers who have requested a car, was widely available to corporate employees. Drivers, who operate as contractors, do not have access to God View.

Early this November, one of the reporters of this story, Johana Bhuiyan, arrived to Uber’s New York headquarters in Long Island City for an interview with Josh Mohrer, the general manager of Uber New York. Stepping out of her vehicle — an Uber car — she found Mohrer waiting for her. “There you are,” he said, holding his iPhone and gesturing at it. “I was tracking you.”

Mohrer never asked for permission to track her.

11 things we just learned about how the Apple Watch works | The Verge

An iPhone is required — at (almost) all times. In Apple’s own words, Watch apps extend iOS apps. “You begin your Watch app development with your existing iOS app, which must support iPhone.”

Native apps are coming next year. Important footnote from the press release: “Starting later next year, developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch.”

There could be more Watch sizes later. “Unlike iOS, where you place views at a coordinate on the screen,” Apple says, “with WatchKit, objects automatically flow downward from the top left corner of the screen, filling the available space.”

There are two types of Apple Watch notifications. The “Short Look” is only seen briefly when you raise your wrist — it’s an app icon, an app name, and some brief information. If the wearer keeps their wrist raised long enough — “after a moment,” according to Apple — the screen changes to a “Long Look” notification, which provides more information and is more customizable. For Long Looks, the app icon and name move to the top of the screen, and wearers can scroll down through the interface to use custom actions (such as “comment” or “favorite”) or dismiss the notification.

Glances. We already knew some of this, but now it’s well documented. In addition to the app itself and the notification, developers can make “Glances” for quick view of information (e.g. time, weather, tasks left). All the information must fit on a single screen and is read-only, but you’ll be able to tap it to enter the corresponding app.

No custom gestures. The interface is more or less locked to what Apple wants: vertical swipes scrolls through the screen, horizontal swipes go between pages, taps indicate selection, “force touch” opens up a context menu, and that digital crown scrolls through pages way faster. Additionally an edge swipe left goes back or up a page (“back to the parent interface controller,” if we’re being technical), and an edge swipe up opens the “Glance” view.

Messaging App Viber Takes A Step Into Social Networking With New Public Chats Feature | TechCrunch

Today Viber, the messaging app with 209 million users, is taking a different approach: it is launching Public Chats, giving users a way of using its direct messaging and voice services app to broadcast to the world at large.

Public Chats will see the introduction of live conversation streams — from celebrities, or as CEO Talmon Marco told me, other interesting people “like taxi drivers!” — that will be open for any follower to see, but not necessarily participate in. Users will only be able to jump in and talk in Public Chats if the account in question is in their contacts.

Baltimore Police balk when pressed by judge on phone tracking capabilities – Baltimore Sun

Baltimore prosecutors withdrew key evidence in a robbery case Monday rather than reveal details of the cellphone tracking technology police used to gather it.

The surprise turn in Baltimore Circuit Court came after a defense attorney pressed a city police detective to reveal how officers had tracked his client.

City police Det. John L. Haley, a member of a specialized phone tracking unit, said officers did not use the controversial device known as a stingray. But when pressed on how phones are tracked, he cited what he called a “nondisclosure agreement” with the FBI.

Defense attorney Joshua Insley still believes that police used a stingray to find Taylor. He cited a letter in which prosecutors said they were prohibited by the Department of Justice from disclosing information about methods used in their investigation.

The portable device was developed for the military to help zero in on cellphones. It mimics a cellphone tower to force nearby phones to connect to it.

Records shows that the Baltimore Police Department purchased a stingray for $133,000 in 2009.

Windows 10 Includes a Linux-Style Package Manager Named “OneGet”

(I’m batching up my answers, I’m post-limited because I don’t post on Reddit much at all)

FAQs:

OneGet is open source — https://github.com/oneget/oneget[1]

  • we post bleeding edge/experimental builds often and the latest is always https://oneget.org/oneget.zip[2] (this contains the chocolatey provider again!)
  • Following @PSOneGet on twitter will keep you in the loop when new builds arrive.
  • We also actively take community input and design ideas; anyone can participate during our online weekly meetings (Friday mornings at 10AM PDT) — https://oneget.org/weekly/meeting.html[3]

@ANUSBLASTER_MKII — Package Provider can provider their own default repositories, but you have a point, feed discovery is an important concept. I have a few ideas about it, I think we’ll have to talk about that in the weekly meeting this week.

@blackout24 — I hear ya. I do make cmdline stuff all the time, but the PowerShell way of doing things strongly encourages use down a particular set of patterns. I’d tend to go a bit simpler too, but once you’ve learned the “PowerShell” patterns, everything that follows those is easy to use.

As well, OneGet will be exposing the APIs to talk to the package providers, so it’s entirely possible to build standalone cmdline tools that just use the APIs and make things easy.

CSB: I had a rather senior director at MS ask me if we couldn’t just make an exe called RPM (and/or apt-get) that had the same syntax as the linux tools so that those who were well versed in one could just use OneGet that way. I told him sure, but we’re scrambling for time, so I don’t know when we’d get to it 🙂

@Tireseas – what would you like it to do differently for interactive use? I’m going to great lengths to make the tab-completion as functional as I can (way more than PowerShell normally would let me). Additionally, the APIs will let someone make a GUI around it and bypass the whole powershell interface.

The “Oculus Platform” Marketplace For Virtual Reality App Launches This Fall | TechCrunch

Oculus announced the “Oculus Platform” store for developers to distribute their virtual reality apps and experiences today at the Oculus Connect conference. Starting this fall on the Samsung Gear VR made by Oculus, this revamp of the Oculus Share marketplace will let users browse the Oculus Platform within virtual reality and download apps, games, and entertainment experiences.

Eventually, there will be versions of the Oculus Platform for the Rift, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. Oculus Platform could become one of the first ways for developers to sell the VR experiences they build, and by creating this marketplace, Oculus could rally the ecosystem to its mobile and PC-based VR headsets.

Oculus open-sources original Rift developer kit’s firmware, schematics, and mechanics | PCWorld

Kicking off the Oculus Connect conference in Los Angeles this weekend, Oculus’s Nirav Patel announced that the original Oculus Rift developer kit (DK1) is now fully open-source, with the exception of the pieces that aren’t actually in production anymore—for instance, the display, which is no longer manufactured.

“We don’t want everyone to have to take the same risks we took. We just want to share the things we learned so you don’t have to do that. We’re all in this to build virtual reality together,” said Patel.

Mandatory Google+ Gmail Integration Quietly Shelved | WordStream

Google has gone to valiant lengths to convince us that rumors of Google+’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, but Google is no longer forcing new Gmail users to connect their account to a Google+ profile — yet another move that could signal the end for Google’s troubled social network.

DuckDuckGo joins Google in being blocked in China

Privacy-oriented search engine DuckDuckGo is now blocked in China. We noticed this over the weekend, and on Sunday DuckDuckGo founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg confirmed to Tech in Asia that the team has noticed the blockage in China:

GreatFire index of blocked sites suggest that DuckDuckGo got whacked on September 4).

Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care About

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin.

Currently, shipping estimates for new iPhone 6 orders remains at 7-10 business days, while the iPhone 6 Plus is still showing a shipping delay of 3-4 weeks.

Ultimately, the schism over systemd could lead to a separation of desktop and server distros, or Linux server admins moving to FreeBSD

Systemd has turned into the Godzilla of Linux controversies. Everywhere you look it’s stomping through blogs, rampaging through online discussion threads, and causing white-hot flames that resemble Godzilla’s own breath of death. TechNewsWorld has a roundup of the systemd hostilities in case you missed any of it and want to savor some of the drama.

Maybe it’s time Linux is split in two. I suggested this possibility last week when discussing systemd (or that FreeBSD could see higher server adoption), but it’s more than systemd coming into play here. It’s from the bootloader all the way up. The more we see Linux distributions trying to offer chimera-like operating systems that can be a server or a desktop at a whim, the more we tend to see the dilution of both. You can run stock Debian Jessie on your laptop or on a 64-way server. Does it not make sense to concentrate all efforts on one or the other?

“The whole point of the Oracle Google suit was that Oracle was passed that Google didn\’t use their VM but instead wrote their own VM based on the open Java language specifications. So given that I don\’t see Java language specification being closed any time soon, and that Google are unlikely to drop their Dalvik implementation (especially after basically getting a soft slap on the wrist in the courts), TechCrunch\’s Java question was stupid, Larry Page fscked up not calling them out (maybe he was sick) and you guys should have picked up in this.”

Ouya Review

Let\’s say everything goes exactly right for Ouya. Every good game in the Play Store becomes available to Ouya, Netflix and Amazon decide to play nice with the device, and the ROM and hacker community explode and make every app and many more available to the nascent platform. Then and only then, Ouya can be viable — if it can combine a decent set-top box with a decent gaming platform, it may have a case to make for your $99. But those are a lot of cards that have to fall a particular way, and without them the Ouya is a lot more like a Raspberry Pi than an Xbox 360.

Anyway that was my experience with the console. It\’s still early, but the platform seems to be shaping up nicely. Only time will tell if it can actually grab the attention of gamers everywhere.

It\’s difficult not to weigh the Ouya\’s current shortcomings against all of its grand, much-publicized promise, but all of that grandiosity has to be reconciled with an important fact: The Ouya costs $99. Even if competent mobile ports are the best games the Ouya ever gets, that\’s an incredibly low barrier of entry for consumers and developers alike. How many good games does it take to be considered a good return on a $99 investment? One? Five? 10?

XBox One For Devs

So the leaders of the indie game community clearly weren\’t thrilled by the Xbox One reveal. But does that mean that Microsoft is hanging them out to dry? Possibly. An independent developer who has worked with Microsoft in the past told NBC News that \”premium\” has become something of a buzzword for the company\’s new console, as if to emphasize that the company wants to maintain a strong hand in curating all gaming content that appears on XBLA.

A few developers have weighed in on the Xbox One reveal, with many citing confusion over why we have to have Kinect 2 enabled all the time, and why the main focus was on the television aspect of the console — and not the games.

Microsoft on Thursday revealed new details about its \”NUads,\” which are coming to Xbox Live this fall. NUads are interactive advertisements that put the Kinect\’s motion-sensing and voice-detecting abilities to work.

In an application filed in December 2010 but just made public last week, Microsoft sought to patent an advertising engine that gauges people\’s emotional states based on their search queries, emails, instant messages and use of online games, as well as facial expressions, speech patterns and body movements. The ad engine is device-agnostic; as Microsoft noted in its application, \”client devices\” could include personal digital assistants, smart phones, laptops, PCs and gaming devices.

A patent filed by Microsoft indicates that Kinect could count the number of viewers watching (or playing) content and allow the content supplier to charge a fee per person.

There weren\’t stunts at Google I/O 2013 resembling the Great Google Glass Launch of 2012, and there wasn\’t nearly the same level of hard news as there was in 2012, but nonetheless it was a significant event for both software developers and users.

A Google I/O Nexus 7 (HD) announcement is one of the most highly anticipated development at the annual Android event. When the device was a no-show, Nexus tab enthusiasts refuse to give up hope.

Today, during Google\’s I/O developer conference, the company announced a group of tools for app developers, including a new developer suite called Android Studio. It\’s an IDE based on IntelliJ.

Google also introduced its music subscription and discovery service called Google Play Music All Access. For a $9.99 monthly fee — $7.99 if you start a 30-day trial by June 30 — you get unlimited access to stream tracks thought the Play Music app and on the web.

My guess is that the conversion will start slow. Perhaps Google will start to push Chrome apps for the Android version of Chrome. Maybe in a year, when those rumored Google stores start to show, we’ll see a Chrome for Mobile “developer phone.” Regardless of the conversion starts, my bet is that within the next five years Google will start publically pushing Chrome as its next generation operating system.

Google is fixing its eyes on its favoured partner, Samsung. The Android OS made the South Korean tech giant become the dominant smartphone maker in the world with nearly 215 million smartphones in 2012 or 40 per cent of the global market.

Data released by UK\’s Juniper Research shows that although Samsung has retaken the smartphone sales lead from Apple, with 42.2 million sold against 35.1 million, Apple is easily leading in terms of revenue from mobile sales. It estimates that Apple\’s mobile revenues were $29.3 billion, when including the iPad. By comparison, Samsung\’s revenue from all mobile devices including feature phones came in at $17 billion.

They\’re actually generating more than 100 percent of the industry\’s earnings — 106 percent, to be precise — according to a report from Canaccord Genuity.

That may seem impossible, but it\’s largely because rivals — like Research In Motion, Nokia, and Motorola — posted operating losses during the September quarter, the firm said.

— US Businesses Under Sustained CYBER ATTACK!!oneone!! —

The report by computer security firm Mandiant Corp. in Alexandria, Va., breaks new ground by attributing attacks against 141 companies to a specific 12-story office building in the financial center of Shanghai.

Shanghai security officers chase a CNN crew attempting to record a building at the center of hacking allegations

Chinese officials have insisted in recent years that China is one of the biggest targets of cyberattacks.

\”Statistics show that Chinese military terminals connected to the Internet have been subjected to large numbers of attacks from abroad,\” the defense ministry said Wednesday, adding that Internet protocol addresses \”indicate that a considerable number of these attacks are from the United States, but we have never used this as a reason to accuse the United States.\”

\”Every country should handle the problem of cybersecurity in a professional and responsible manner,\” the ministry said.

A look at Mandiant, allegations on China hacking – SFGate

  • Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., Mandiant was started in 2004 by Kevin Mandia, a retired Air Force officer who carved out a lucrative niche investigating computer crimes.

  • Mandiant was most recently noted for its work in helping The New York Times trace an attack on its employees\’ computers to China, following a Times investigation into China\’s Premier Wen Jiabao. The newspaper publicly acknowledged Mandiant\’s role in the case.

  • Mandiant alleges that it has traced a massive hacking campaign on U.S. businesses to a drab, white 12-story office building outside Shanghai run by \”Unit 61398\” of the People\’s Liberation Army. The report contains some of the most extensive and detailed accusations on China\’s cybersnooping publicly available, including a timeline and details of malware used.

  • Mandiant has an obvious commercial interest in releasing the information, too. The company said its existing customers were already warned about and protected against the techniques it discovered, and it offered a free software tool to companies and organizations to detect suspicious activity. It puts Mandiant front-and-center at a critical time on a national debate about cybersecurity.

  • Its founder testified earlier this month to the House Intelligence Committee on hacking threats.

A blacked-out gaming room helped Newtown, Conn., shooter Adam Lanza descend into his own world, CBS News senior correspondent John Miller, a former FBI assistant director, said on \”CBS This Morning.\”

\”During an ongoing criminal investigation, we do not release bits and pieces of a case, we simply don\’t do it so anyone that sees any information that indicates that it is associated with this case, and see \”sources,\” being the source of information, should be take a step back,\” said Lt. Vance.
