Some Bugs

Bug #1553652 “Ubiquity Install fails to create Swap Partition Er…” : Bugs : ubiquity package : Ubuntu

Attempting to install Daily Drop of Unity Desktop 16.04. Selecting fourth install option to Erase Disk and Install Ubuntu. Receiving error that Swap Partition creation failed. Unable to proceed with installation and must reboot. This is a hard failure and also happens on the current Gnome Daily 16.04 distribution.

@dominucco @Kernellinux not yet. I understand it's an upstream Intel video driver issue. Will let you know when I see a fix appear.

No Catalyst/fglrx video driver in Ubuntu 16.04 | Timo Aaltonen’s Weblog

In case someone hasn’t noticed yet, fglrx has been removed from Xenial. There are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, the driver did not support XServer 1.18 which we wanted to get in for 16.04. But more importantly, AMD asked us earlier this year to migrate to the open driver stack since fglrx would not be supported in 16.04.

Snap Packages

Snapcraft 2.8 Now Live in Ubuntu 16.04, Adds Support for Snappy’s New Interfaces

New features in Snapcraft 2.8 include better detection of some of the steps that need to be executed for showing the current version of the snapraft.yaml file, support for using the “cleanbuild” command to make sure you have a clean build of your snaps, as well as support for Snappy’s new interface, which is still work in progress.

Starting with Snapcraft 2.8, support for Snappy’s “config” setting has been completely removed, and by popular request, the “geoip” feature has been disabled by default. Users can enable it in Snapcraft using the “–enable-geoip” flag via the command-line. More details should be found in today’s announcement.

KDE neon upgrades to 16.04LTS

KDE neon is a package archive of KDE software built on a stable foundation. We use Ubuntu because it’s good technology that we’re familiar with and which provides a Long Term Support foundation we can use. When we started the only practical version to use at the start was 15.10 so our packages have been built using that. But with 16.04LTS due out next week it’s time to move to a solid foundation where we expect to stay for the next couple of years.

Pi Powered Weather Monitor RUNS LINUX

Essentially, one Raspberry Pi acts as a surveillance camera and temperature sensor, while the other Raspberry Pi acts as a remote display. You can view the feed of the camera using a touchscreen that allows you to switch over to a graph at a tap. As you’d expect, you’ll need a couple of Raspberry Pis, a touch screen, a temperature sensor, a Raspberry Pi camera, and a pair of Wi-Fi dongles. When you’re all finished with the project, you’ll easily be able to pull up a live feed from the camera on a Pi. It’s a pretty easy little project when all’s said and done. Ubuntu Linux Continues To Dominate OpenStack and Other Clouds

In the latest OpenStack user survey, we see that OpenStack is finally gaining real momentum in private clouds. We also see that Ubuntu Linux is continuing to dominate OpenStack. As Canonical cloud marketing manager Bill Bauman said, “Ubuntu OpenStack continues to dominate the majority of deployments with 55 percent of production OpenStack clouds. The previous survey showed Ubuntu OpenStack at 33 percent of production clouds. Ubuntu has seen almost 67 percent growth in an area where Ubuntu was already the market leader. These numbers are a huge testament to the community support Ubuntu OpenStack receives every day.” The Cloud Market’s latest analysis of operating systems on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) shows Ubuntu with just over 215,000 instances. Ubuntu is followed by Amazon’s own Amazon Linux Amazon Machine Image (AMI), with 86,000 instances. Further back, you’ll find Windows with 26,000 instances. In fourth and fifth place, respectively, you’ll find Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) with 16,500 instances and then CentOS with 12,500 instances.

The culture at Cumulus is all about standards. It was expressed repeatedly that Cumulus want to ensure that their linux is absolutely standard, so the file system hierarchy should be the standard, configuration files should be where they normally are, and so forth. A system that doesn’t follow those guidelines becomes a special snowflake that can’t be supported by regular tools and, as you’ll see, this attitude has paid dividends in this solution.

Raytheon to Plow $1.7 Billion Into New Cyber Venture

Raytheon Co. RTN 0.89% is betting it can leverage the cybersecurity skills it honed for the U.S. military and intelligence agencies to sell to banks and retailers, investing almost $1.7 billion to establish a stand-alone business in an area where its defense peers have struggled to make money.

The company on Monday said it would buy control of Websense Inc. from private-equity firm Vista Partners LLC. Raytheon said Austin, Texas-based Websense, which has 21,000 data-security clients, half of them overseas, will form the core of a new cyber joint venture with forecast sales of $500 million this year and margins of around 20%.

Baltimore Police Used Stingrays For Phone Tracking Over 25,000 Times

The Baltimore Police Department is starting to come clean about its use of cell-phone signal interceptors — commonly known as Stingrays — and the numbers are alarming. According to recent court testimony reported by The Baltimore Sun, the city’s police have used Stingray devices with a court order more than 25,000 times. It’s a massive number, representing an average of nearly nine uses a day for eight years (the BPD acquired the technology in 2007), and it doesn’t include any emergency uses of the device, which would have proceeded without a court order.

Why the Journey To IPv6 Is Still the Road Less Traveled

The writing’s on the wall about the short supply of IPv4 addresses, and IPv6 has been around since 1999. Then why does the new protocol still make up just a fraction of the Internet? Though IPv6 is finished technology that works, rolling it out may be either a simple process or a complicated and risky one, depending on what role you play on the Internet. And the rewards for doing so aren’t always obvious. For one thing, making your site or service available via IPv6 only helps the relatively small number of users who are already set up with the protocol, creating a nagging chicken-and-egg problem.

Big Google algorithm change this week will usher in a new mobile era

The change has been a long time coming — Google first announced it back in November — but starting Tuesday, companies that haven’t made the switch will start feeling the hit in Google’s search results. The changes will favor sites that avoid technologies like Flash that don’t work on phones, have layouts that automatically scale so that users don’t have to scroll side-to-side or zoom, and have links placed far enough apart that they can be easily tapped with a finger.

New agency to sniff out threats in cyberspace – The Washington Post

The Obama administration is establishing a new agency to combat the deepening threat from cyberattacks, and its mission will be to fuse intelligence from around the government when a crisis occurs.

The agency is modeled after the National Counterterrorism Center, which was launched in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks amid criticism that the government failed to share intelligence that could have unraveled the al-Qaeda plot.

Over the past several years, a series of significant cyber-incidents has affected U.S. companies and government networks, increasing the profile of the threat for policymakers and industries. Disruptions, linked to Iran, of major bank Web sites, a Russian intrusion into the White House’s unclassified computer networkand the North Korean hack of Sony Pictures have raised the specter of devastating consequences if critical infrastructure were destroyed.

Microsoft Reveals Windows Holographic, An Augmented Reality User Interface For The World

HoloLens is completely wireless, and features see-through lenses, spatial sound and advanced sensors. It’s designed to be a self-contained unit, and it has its own custom CPU and new Holographic Processing Unit (HPU) to work. It doesn’t even require a phone or computer to connect to wirelessly to work, and is meant to be completely independent.

HoloLens is Microsoft’s take on augmented reality

According to Redmond’s Alex Kipman, Holographic applications are Windows 10 universal apps so developers will be able to release them across a wide range of devices. The platform works in concert with the newly unveiled HoloLens headset that allows interaction between the physical and digital worlds. The outfit showed this all off with a live demo of an app dubbed HoloStudio wherein an employee built a quadrocopter onstage by pointing her finger and issuing voice commands like “mirror” and “copy.” It all seemed pretty natural, actually. Kipman likened it to “print preview for 3D printing” and then pulled a 3D-printed version of the UFO-like quadrocopter seemingly out of his back pocket to show that it’s more than just a concept — it’s a reality.

Windows 10 hands-on: Microsoft got it right this time

It’s snappy and fast in a way that some doubters don’t believe Windows can be — but more importantly, everything feels faster because there are just fewer concepts to juggle in your head when you are navigating around.

Microsoft has essentially made the distinction between desktop apps and “Modern” apps (or whatever we’re calling them these days) invisible to the end user. You can switch between them seamlessly and manage them either snapped to half or full screen or windowed. Basically, everything is just a window, and it’s great.

Then there’s Cortana, which is still not fully complete on the build that we say but nevertheless worked quickly to launch apps and search the computer. Microsoft really wants you to use it (her?), dedicating a big spot on the status bar for a button or a text entry field (depending on the mode you’re in). We were only able to get Cortana’s voice search to work haltingly, about one out of every five tries.

Chrome OS can now run Android apps, no porting required

The app code is all running on top of the Chrome platform, specifically inside of Native Client. In this way the ARC (App Runtime for Chrome) apps run in the same environment as other apps you can download from the Chrome Web Store, even though they are written on top of standard Android APIs. The developers do not need to port or modify their code, though they often choose to improve it to work well with the Chromebook form factor (keyboard, touchpad, optional touchscreen, etc).

Naked celebrity hack: security experts focus on iCloud backup theory | The Guardian

Over the weekend, hundreds of nude photos of celebrities were leaked on 4chan before spreading to multiple Internet sites, with one of the involved hackers pointing towards iCloud as the source of the material.

One theory gaining ground is that many of the pictures had been accumulated by one hacker over a period of time – and were then “popped” by another hacker who somehow broke into a machine belonging to the first. Lending weight to that was that one of the earliest photos found in a cache released online dated to December 2011, while the most recent was from 14 August.

Some have also pointed to the presence of a Dropbox tutorial file in one hacked account as suggesting that the third-party cloud storage service was a source of some pictures.

Apple said Monday it was “actively investigating” the violation of several of its iCloud accounts, in which revealing photos and videos of prominent Hollywood actresses were taken and posted all over the Web.

FBI investigating alleged iCloud celebrity hack as Reddit ‘suspect’ declares innocence

[The FBI is] aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter. Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time.

Reddit sleuths, meantime, accused Southern Digital Media sysadmin Brian F Hamade of being the man who leaked the photos. This was based on the same drive names appearing on a screenshot posted by the leaker and ones on an old Reddit post by Hamade.

AnandTech Publisher Anand Shimpi Headed to Apple | Re/code

Anand Lal Shimpi, the editor and publisher of the well-regarded AnandTech site, is going to work at Apple.

An Apple rep confirmed that the company was hiring Shimpi, but wouldn’t provide any other details.

Last night, via a post on the site he founded in 1997, Shimpi said he was “officially retiring from the tech publishing world,” but didn’t say what he was doing next. “I won’t stay idle forever. There are a bunch of challenges out there :)”, he wrote.

AnandTech will continue publishing, and would be run by new editor in chief Ryan Smith.

China gives Microsoft 20 days to provide explanation in anti-trust probe | Reuters

A Chinese anti-trust regulator said on Monday it has given Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) 20 days to reply to queries on the compatibility of its Windows operating system and Office software suite amid a probe into the world’s largest software company.

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) questioned Microsoft Vice President David Chen and gave the company a deadline to make an explanation, the agency said in a short statement on its website.

According to a state media report on Monday, Microsoft’s use of verification codes also spurred complaints from Chinese companies. Their use “may have violated China’s anti-monopoly law”, the official Xinhua news agency said on Monday.

A US judge has lifted a stay on a ruling, forcing Microsoft to hand over data it stores overseas. But the software giant said it will not comply, pending an appeal.

The government says that the order is not appealable at this stage, and Preska agrees. The Friday order says that the contempt order would be subject to appellate review. This disagreement over the path to appeal is, says the order, “the subject of hot dispute.”

Microsoft Will Cut up to 18,000 Jobs | Re/code

Microsoft on Thursday announced it plans to cut up to 18,000 jobs this year–its deepest-ever cuts–as the company looked to digest its Nokia acquisition and reposition itself for the future.

The company is “moving now” on 13,000 of the job cuts, with the vast majority of the overall cuts coming in the next six months and fully implemented over the next 12 months.

Some 12,500 of the cuts are coming from the Nokia Devices and Services unit–roughly half that unit’s workforce.

Sprint, T-Mobile Look to Raise $10 Billion for Spectrum Auction – WSJ

The Federal Communications Commission is seeking to buy airwaves used by television broadcasters in a reverse auction, and then resell them to wireless carriers in a forward auction. It is a complicated process and the first time such an idea has been tried, the FCC said.

Sprint and T-Mobile are working on a plan to raise roughly $10 billion to spend in an auction of wireless airwaves, people familiar with the matter said.

If Sprint and T-Mobile jointly spend $10 billion as currently envisioned, it would exceed the $9 billion outlay AT&T Inc. has earmarked for the auction.

The companies, which have been discussing a possible merger since last year, are planning to form a joint venture that will bid in a 2015 auction of airwaves held by television broadcasters, the people said.

The funds are part of a roughly $45 billion financing package being put together by SoftBank to finance Sprint’s acquisition of T-Mobile, the people said. SoftBank acquired Sprint last year for $22 billion.

T-Mobile would oversee the venture, a concession from Sprint’s Chairman during the merger talks, people familiar with the matter said.

An announcement of the merger could come this summer, people familiar with the matter said.

Google Search Integrates Bitcoin Price Calculator

The news comes roughly one month after Google Finance partnered with Coinbase to launch a bitcoin price tracker that enabled BTC-to-fiat price conversions across a wide range of global currencies.

A representative from Google confirmed the update to CoinDesk, noting that the tool works on Google Search’s smartphone app as well.

How it works

Google search engine users can now type in basic queries such as “bitcoin price” or “price of BTC” in order to instantly access the tool.

The update also handles more complex queries including “price of 3 bitcoin” or “5 BTC”, and responds by showing the current price of bitcoin along with a chart illustrating the currency’s history dating back before 2011.

Investors should note, however, that per Google’s disclaimer policies, the resulting search may not reflect real-time value.

Netflix to FCC: reclassify Comcast and Verizon so they can’t choke the internet

Netflix came out swinging in its submission to the FCC over proposed internet “fast lanes,” arguing Wednesday that this would be a bad idea and that the agency should instead focus on forcing broadband providers to deliver the speeds they promise to their customers.

In its 28-page filing, which coincides with the close of an initial public comment period, Netflix singled out Comcast and Verizon for degrading its movie streams to “nearly VHS quality” and for holding subscribers ransom in a battle over who should pay for upgrades to internet infrastructure.

The company also took aim at the FCC’s “fast lane” proposal, arguing that it creates a perverse incentive for the ISPs to create congestion so that they can then turn around and demand money for traffic to pass through. Arguing that “no rule is better than a bad rule,”

Supreme Court says police must get warrants for most cellphone searches

“The decision brings the Fourth Amendment into the digital age,” Fisher said. “The core of the decision is that digital information is different. It triggers privacy concerns far more profound than ordinary physical objects.”

In general, warrants are required for searches, but the court’s precedents have said that a person’s privacy expectations diminish considerably after an arrest. Police may protect themselves and others by searching the arrestee for weapons or securing evidence that might be destroyed.

Roberts said he “cannot deny” that the decision will have an impact on the ability of law enforcement to combat crime. “Privacy comes at a cost,” he wrote.

But he said police can use their own technology to ensure that the information on cellphones that might contain critical evidence is not erased or lost. He also said there could be “case-specific”exceptions to the warrant rule.

Coinbase Working with Intuit’s QuickBooks to Offer Bitcoin Payments to Small Business

Starting today, Coinbase and QuickBooks Online are collaborating to offer PayByCoin, a new service from Intuit that will enable small businesses to accept bitcoin payments.

How does it work?

Small business operators register with Coinbase and link their bitcoin wallet to their QuickBooks Online account.
When a customer receives an invoice, they now have the option to pay by bitcoin, in addition to existing methods such as credit cards and bank transfers.
Intuit does not currently charge a fee for this new service. Coinbase does not charge any fees for the first $1,000,000 USD in bitcoin transactions; after that, a 1% payment processing fee with be charged when converting bitcoin to USD.

Aereo loses to broadcasters in Supreme Court fight for its life

The Supreme Court struck a dramatic blow against Aereo today in a ruling that puts the TV streaming service as it currently exists on its deathbed. In a 6–3 ruling, the court found that Aereo’s service violates the Copyright Act by playing back recordings of broadcasters’ TV show

Next generation of Stuxnet seen in the wild?

Called Duqu, the malware appears to be based on the same concepts as Stuxnet, and likely was written by some of the same people, or someone with access to the Stuxnet source code.
The malware is designed to be stealthy and silent, rather than exploiting the system to some gain, like most malware
The rootkit loads it self as a validly signed driver. It appears to have been signed by the certificate of a company in Taiwan identified as C-Media Electronics Incorporation. It is possible that their systems were compromised and their private key is being used without their knowledge. The certificate was set to expire on August 2, 2012, but authorities revoked it on Oct. 14
The malware is not a worm, as it does it spread, and has no destructive payload
It appears to only gather intelligence and act as a espionage agent, collecting data to be used a future attack.
Analysts claim it appears to be seeking information on an unidentified industrial control system
Duqu appears to have been in operation, undetected for more than a year
Symantec has declined to name the countries where the malware was found, or to identify the specific industries infected, other than to say they are in the manufacturing and critical infrastructure sectors

Google switching to SSL for logged in users’ searches

Users who do a search while logged in, will do the search over SSL, meaning their search query and the results will be protected from snooping by their ISP, Government, Law Enforcement and WiFi hackers.
This is an important step as google works to personalize your search results more and more.
An interesting side effect of this is that browsers do not pass referrer headers when you transition from an SSL site. So the sites you visit from the search results page will no longer see what your search query was. Clicks on Adwords and other sponsored links will still pass your search query.
The primary impediment to SSL for everything is performance, encrypting all traffic on the web would require a great deal more hardware. This is why Google defaults to a weaker encryption for things like search results, than what online merchants typically use.
Another impediment to SSL is the certificate system, typical setups require a unique IP for each SSL certificate (because the name based virtual hosting typically done by web servers relies on an HTTP header, that is not sent until after the encryption session is started). However modern browsers and web servers support ‘SNI’ (Server Name Indication) to allow that information to be passed as part of the initial encryption setup. There are also solutions such as wildcard certificates (ie, *.google.com) and Unified Communications Certificates (UCC, typically used for MS Exchange servers and the like).
Google will also provide website owners with the top 1000 search queries that lead visitors to their site via Google Webmaster Tools.

ZFS Segment

This week we will be taking a look at ZFS as a storage solution
ZFS was originally developed by Sun Microsystems to be able to store a zetta byte of data (A zetta byte is equal to 1 billion tera bytes)
ZFS is both the Volume Manager and the File System. This gives it some unique benefits, including the ability to increase the size of the file system on the fly and improves performance for the ‘scrub’ (integrity check all data) and resilver (recover from a failed disk) operations, as only data blocks that are actually in use need to be rewritten, whereas a hardware RAID controller must resilver the entire disk because it is unaware of the file system.
ZFS is a ‘Copy-On-Write’ file system, this means that data is not immediately overwritten when it is changed
Features
- Multiple mount points – You can create various mount points from the same storage pool, allowing you to have different settings for different types of files.
- Passive Integrity Checking (Fletcher Checksum or SHA–2) – As data is read, it is compared against the checksum (or hash, depending on settings). If the data is found to be corrupted, ZFS attempts to recover it (from a mirrored device, RAID Z, or copies). This feature allows ZFS to detect silent corruption that normally goes unnoticed.
- RAID Z – RAID Z works very similar to RAID 5, except without the requirement for a hardware RAID controller. RAID Z2 provides two parity drives, like RAID 6. Recently, RAID Z3 was also introduced, using 3 drives for parity, providing exceptional fault tolerance.
- Compression – Allow you to compress the data stored in this mount point (defaults to lzjb for speed, or you can choose a specific level of gzip). This can be great for storing highly compressible information such as log files
- Deduplication – Since ZFS already knows the hash of your files as it writes them, it can detect that a file with the identical content already exists in your storage pool, and it will simply link the new file to the old one, and because ZFS is copy-on-write, if either file changes, it does not effect the other. ZFS also supports an optional ‘verify’ setting, where even if the checksum/hash matches, it will do a byte-by-byte verification to ensure the files are the same, to avoid a cache collision resulting in data corruption, even though the chances of this happening are around 10^–77. Deduplication uses a lot of ram, so it is recommended that you only use it on datasets where there is a high probability of duplication (It requires 320 bytes per block, meaning 1TB of data in 8kb blocks requires 32GB of ram. ZFS allows blocks up to 128kb). Deduplication will only use up to 25% of ARC memory, after that performance is degraded.
- Purposeful Duplication (Copies) – Allows you to ask ZFS to maintain more than 1 copy of each file in a mount point. This is in addition to any redundancy provided by mirrors/RAID Z etc. Where possible the additional copies are stored on different physical devices. This allows you to get the benefit of a system like RAID Z but only for a specific set of data, while using regular striping for the rest, to maximize your storage capacity. (The ‘Copies’ system was not designed to protect against entire drives failing, just the loss of specific sectors, also this setting only effects newly created files, so you should set it when you create the mount point)
- Snapshots – A read only copy of the file system from a specific point in time, great for backups etc.
- Clones – A writable snapshot. Allows you to create a second copy of the file system that shares all of the same disk space, and any changes to either the original or the clone get saved separately.
- Dynamic Striping – As you add more disks to your ZFS pool, the strips are automatically adjusted to take advantage of the write performance of all available disks.
- Space Reservation – Since all mount points share the same pool of free space, you can set reservations to make sure specific mount points always have access to free space, even if another mount point is trying to use all of the space.
In summary, ZFS can be a great solution for your home file server, as it allows you the flexibility to add additional storage at any time, deduplicate files, provided limited redundancy without needing RAID and can even provide some Drobo like functionality.
If you keep at least one SATA port available in your file server, you can replace smaller devices by attaching the newer drive, and using the ‘zpool replace’ command, to copy all of the data to the new device, then remove the smaller one. You can eventually replace every device in the system this way, and the storage pool sizes up automatically.
RAID Z pools cannot currently have devices added to them, although this feature is in the works. If you create a RAID Z (or Z2/Z3) pool, you can still increase it’s storage capacity by replacing each disk one at a time, and waiting for it to resilver (unlike in non-redundant setups, you do not have to connect the new device before removing the old one). Again, because ZFS is both the Volume Manager and the File System, the resilvering process is faster, because only data that is actually in use needs to be written to the new device.
