Canonical IPO is a go, Microsoft brings more Linux to Windows, OpenWRT, LEDE agree on Linux-for-routers peace plan & Google launches project Treble.

Linux On Windows Server: Linux Admin Scripts Will Now Run On Windows

Last week, at its developer conference Build 2017, Microsoft announced that it’s bringing Windows Subsystem for Linux to Windows Server. Apart from this, Windows Server will also be joining Windows Insider program. The other new features of Windows Server will be aligned with the next release of Windows 10.

I am pleased to share that we are also bringing the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), commonly known as Bash on Windows, to Windows Server. This unique combination allows developer and application administrators to use the same scripts, tools, procedures and container images they have been using for Linux containers on their Windows Server container host. These containers use our Hyper-V isolation technology combined with your choice of Linux kernel to host the workload while the management scripts and tools on the host use WSL.

Fireworks RUNS LINUX

A test of the Raspberry Pi sprinkler controller which I’m working on. I’m borrowing it to use as a fireworks controller since it’s just a relay controller.

I’m using a 12V SLA battery to power everything. Battery goes into switch box so that fireworks has a master control safety switch. A cheap switching power supply is used to step down the 12V to 5V for the Pi. The relay boards are controlled by three 74hc595 shift registers.

Starbucks Coffee Runs LINUX!

Nick B. – ” Ok, so longtime follower of the show. Found out today that when booting our 1 cup in-office Starbucks coffee maker, the boot screen looked familiar in that it is running Slax Linux. Found this amusing, however unsettling since the OS boots fine, but there is a control board issue that halts the coffee making process. Maybe more QA on the Printed Circuit Board QA process! Thanks guys, and love the show.”

Major Security Flaws Found in ImageMagick

There are multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick, a package commonly used by web services to process images. One of the vulnerabilities can lead to remote code execution (RCE) if you process user submitted images. The exploit for this vulnerability is being used in the wild.

If you use ImageMagick or an affected library, we recommend you mitigate the known vulnerabilities by doing at least one of these two things (but preferably both!):

  • Verify that all image files begin with the expected “magic bytes” corresponding to the image file types you support before sending them to ImageMagick for processing. (see FAQ for more info)

  • Use a policy file to disable the vulnerable ImageMagick coders. The global policy for ImageMagick is usually found in “/etc/ImageMagick”. The below policy.xml example will disable the coders EPHEMERAL, URL, MVG, and MSL.

Runs Linux

Sears RUNS LINUX

Hi Chris,

I spotted linux in the wild today at Sears. While the register was booting up it looked like the ubuntu boot screen with the 4 loading dots, but it was customized to show Sears instead of ubuntu. When the boot process had finished, a gtk dialog box popped up and I was able to snap a picture before it brought up the POS interface.

I also saw they were running desktop linux in the optical department. I only got a glimpse of it, but it looked like it might have been a really old customized version of kde.

The 4.5 kernel has been released

Linus has released the 4.5 kernel.
“So this is later on a Sunday than my usual schedule, because I just
couldn’t make up my mind whether I should do another rc8 or not, and
kept just waffling about it. In the end, I obviously decided not to,
but it could have gone either way.”
Some of the headline features from the development cycle are
dm-verity forward error
correction
,
optional mandatory locking,
the new copy_file_range() system
call
,
the SOCK_DESTROY operation,
another set of persistent-memory
improvements
,
extended address-space layout randomization
on 32-bit systems,
the MADV_FREE option for
madvise(),
the UBSAN checker tool,
some extensions to
epoll_wait()
,
project quotas for the ext4 filesystem,
and more.

Linux 4.6 Staging Has 1600+ Patches, ~400 Patches From Outreachy

So it looks like almost a quarter of the patches are from Outreachy, the group providing paid internships for women and other “underrepresented groups in tech” to work on the Linux kernel and related open-source projects.

XDG-App Is Becoming More Feature Complete

With today’s xdg-app 0.5 release, Alex considers this GNOME sandboxing tech to be feature complete for making it possible for third-parties to create and distribute applications that work across distributions. With this sandboxing, these packaged applications have minimal access to the host as needed for functionality.

Nmap 7.10 Security Scanner Adds Hundreds of OS/Version Fingerprints, New Scripts

“I’m pleased to announce the release of Nmap 7.10 with many great improvements,” says Fyodor in today’s announcement. “It’s got 12 new NSE scripts, hundreds of new OS/version fingerprints, and dozens if smaller improvements and bug fixes. And that’s not even counting the changes in Nmap 7.01, which we released in December 2015.”

Like Linux itself, it is shared with attendees of all skill levels to communicate tips and ideas, and to benefit all who use Linux and Open Source Software. SELF is the place to learn, to make new friends, to network with new business partners, and most importantly, to have fun!

This talk will introduce you to the concepts behind botnets, and also show a live demonstration of a botnet on a sandboxed network.

We’ll start off by discussing the implications of running a botnet and the horrifying effect of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. I’ll demonstrate how bots behave on infected hosts, and give attendees a look at a command and control (C&C) system, which ultimately gives the bots their orders.

At the end of the discussion attendees will be encouraged to share their horror stories of botnet attacks on networks and systems that they’ve administered.

There are a lot of resources available online for those who’d like to research botnets. I’ll share some of these with attendees, but please realize that this talk is for research purposes only.

Ubuntu’s Unity 8 and Mir Get Another Massive, Exciting New Update

HP kills The Machine, repurposes design around conventional technologies

Last year, HP announced it was building The Machine — a computer meant to leap as far above conventional modern systems as a high-end Xeon workstation is above an IBM mainframe from the 1960s. The entire system was designed to work with special-purpose cores and to use memristors as a universal memory architecture. The entire system would be tied together through extensive use of silicon photonics. It was bold, ambitious, and cutting-edge. And now, it’s pretty much dead.

Relax, it’s just Ubuntu 15.04. AARGH! IT’S FULL OF SYSTEMD!!!

Review Systemd is here. It’s arrived in Vivid Vervet, the latest, just-released distro of Ubuntu — 15.04.

Most users will notice very little overall difference in this latest Ubuntu release, but it’s this change that packs the biggest punch.

Wily Werewolf is the name of Ubuntu 15.10

“I think Ubuntu has come to represent the leanest, cleanest focus on free software and design for future experiences, and I think it’s time for us now to accelerate that lead. It’s really important for us to be sure that developers that are comfortable developing for GNOME or KDE know that their applications will absolutely be welcome in a converged Ubuntu world.”

“I would like to announce that we are going to ship a device this year, with a manufacturer, that will fit in your pocket, and be a phone, and will give you a desktop experience. That PC pocket experience is real on Ubuntu.”

Exclusive: Google and Uber Are Going to War Over Taxis

Uber faces an ever-growing cast of adversaries that includes dubious regulators, litigious drivers, hostile members of the press, and some well-funded rivals. But the most significant threat to the app-based transportation company may be much closer to home: one of its biggest investors, Google.

Google Ventures, the search giant’s venture capital arm, invested $258 million in Uber in August 2013. It was Google Ventures’ largest investment deal ever, and the company put more money into Uber’s next funding round less than a year later. Back then, it was easy for observers to imagine Google teaming closely with Uber, or even one day acquiring it. David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer and senior vice president of corporate development, joined the Uber board of directors in 2013 and has served on it ever since.

Uber Chases Google in Self-Driving Cars With Carnegie Mellon Deal – Digits – WSJ

But a person familiar with the matter said news that Google is developing an app to rival Uber has been blown out of proportion. The person said a Google engineer has been testing an internal app that helps Google employees carpool to work, and the app isn’t associated with the company’s driverless cars program.

Two people familiar with the matter said they weren’t aware that Drummond had been asked by anyone to step down and believe he would do so of his own volition if he sees a potential conflict. One of these people added that Uber probably doesn’t want to give information to a potential competitor, but wasn’t aware of any plans to cut off Google’s access to Uber information. The other person said that Uber and Google had been working at arms length for some time and that it was unlikely Uber would stop using Google Maps to help power its service.

Uber declined to comment on Drummond’s board status. A Google spokeswoman referred to a cryptic tweet the company posted late Monday: “We think you’ll find Uber and Lyft work quite well. We use them all the time.” Lyft is a car-hailing service that competes with Uber.

Google is still working closely with the car-hailing services. Uber is integrated directly into the Google Maps smartphone app, allowing users seeking directions to jump into Uber’s app to call a car. Separately, Lyft has worked with Google to integrate its service with Android Wear, Google’s operating system for smartwatches, as well as Google Now, the company’s smart digital assistant app.

RadioShack in Talks to Sell Half Its Stores to Sprint, Shutter the Rest – Bloomberg Business

The locations sold to Sprint would operate under the
wireless carrier’s name, meaning RadioShack would cease to exist
as a stand-alone retailer, said the people, who asked not to be
identified because the talks aren’t public.

Amazon in Talks to Buy Some of RadioShack’s Stores – Bloomberg Business

The possible move, discussed as part of RadioShack’s
looming trip to bankruptcy court, would represent Amazon’s
biggest push into traditional retail. Amazon joins other
potential bidders, including Sprint Corp. and the investment
group behind Brookstone, in evaluating RadioShack stores, people
familiar with the situation said. RadioShack has more than 4,000
U.S. locations and is moving toward a deal to sell a portion and
close the rest, according to some of the people. Sprint has
discussed buying 1,300 to 2,000, they said.

Apple to Convert Failed Arizona Sapphire Plant Into Data Center – Bloomberg Business

Apple Inc. plans to invest $2 billion to
convert an Arizona factory into a data center after the facility
failed to produce sapphire screens for iPhones.

GT Advanced Technologies Inc. filed for bankruptcy
protection in October after the supplier wasn’t able to produce
screens of usable quality at the Apple-owned factory in Mesa,
near Phoenix. The smaller company wasn’t able to fulfill the
terms of an agreement with Apple.

The more than 1.3 million-square-foot building, which was
once a solar-panel factory, was a key part of Apple’s efforts to
bring manufacturing back to the U.S. after years of relying on
Asian suppliers to build the company’s iPhones, iPads and Mac
computers. While Apple had promised to bring jobs to the area
even after the bankruptcy, the data center will probably employ
fewer staff compared with an operation churning out components
for iPhones.

F.C.C. Chief Wants to Override State Laws Curbing Community Net Services – NYTimes.com

The proposal focuses on laws in two states, North Carolina and Tennessee, but it would create a policy framework for other states. About 21 states, by the F.C.C.’s count, have laws that restrict the activities of community broadband services. The initiative by Mr. Wheeler, if endorsed by the full commission, would be the first time the F.C.C. has tried to override such state laws.

Pebble has now sold over 1 million smartwatches | The Verge

According to Migicovsky, Pebble plans to carry its momentum through 2015 with new products and a new software platform that is unlike anything else used on smartwatches to date. While Google and Apple’s smartwatches have been focused on app paradigms, similar to smartphones, Pebble’s new software will apparently be quite different. “We’ve found a new framework to use as an interaction model on the watch,” boasts Migicovsky, before adding that while apps will continue to exist on Pebble, they won’t be the main focus of the platform. “It doesn’t look like what we have today, and it doesn’t look like what’s on your smartphone,” added Migicovsky. Following the launch of the Pebble Steel in January, the company used 2014 as an “investment year,” increasing its headcount from around 30 to over 100 and bringing aboard some of the webOS TV design team from LG, many of whom have been tasked with building the new software platform.

The ArchAssault Project is an Arch Linux derivative for penetration testers, security professionals and all-around Linux enthusiasts. This means we import the vast majority of the official upstream Arch Linux packages, these packages are unmodified from their upstream source. While our Arch Linux base is primarily untouched, there are times were we have to fork a package to be able to better support our vast selection of tools. AMD Planning Open Source GameWorks Competitor, Mantle for Linux

(51:45) _When asked about AMD input on SteamOS and its commitment to the gamers that see that as the future, Huddy mentioned that AMD was considering, but not promising, bringing the Mantle API to Linux. If the opportunity exists, says Huddy, to give the gamer a better experience on that platform with the help of Mantle, and developers ask for the support for AMD, then AMD will at the very least \”listen to that.\” It would incredibly interesting to see a competitor API in the landscape of Linux where OpenGL is essentially the only game in town.
