Federated Sharing – What’s new in ownCloud 9.0

With ownCloud 9.0 we made it even easier to exchange the Federated Cloud IDs. Below you can see the administrator setting for the new Federation App, which will be enabled by default.

The option “Add server automatically once a federated share was created successfully” is enabled by default. This means, that as soon as a user creates a federated share with another ownCloud, either as a recipient or as a sender, ownCloud will add the remote server to the list of trusted ownClouds. Additionally you can predefined a list of trusted ownClouds. While technically it is possible to use plain http I want to point out that I really recommend to use https for all federated share operations to secure your users and their data.

What does it mean that two ownClouds trust each other? ownCloud 9.0 automatically creates a internal address book which contains all users accounts. If two ownClouds trust each other they will start to synchronize their system address books. In order to synchronize the system address books and to keep them up-to-date we use the well known and widespread CardDAV protocol. After the synchronization was successful ownCloud will know all users from the trusted remote servers, including their Federated Cloud ID and their display name. The share dialog will use this information for auto-completion. This allows you to share files across friendly ownClouds without knowing more than the users name. ownCloud will automatically find the corresponding Federated Cloud ID and will suggest the user as a recipient of your share.

Obama Heads to Tech Security Talks Amid Tensions – NYTimes.com

PALO ALTO, Calif. — President Obama will meet here on Friday with the nation’s top technologists on a host of cybersecurity issues and the threats posed by increasingly sophisticated hackers. But nowhere on the agenda is the real issue for the chief executives and tech company officials who will gather on the Stanford campus: the deepening estrangement between Silicon Valley and the government.

The long history of quiet cooperation between Washington and America’s top technology companies — first to win the Cold War, then to combat terrorism — was founded on the assumption of mutual interest. Edward J. Snowden’s revelations shattered that. Now, the Obama administration’s efforts to prevent companies from greatly strengthening encryption in commercial products like Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android phones has set off a new battle, as the companies resist government efforts to make sure police and intelligence agencies can crack the systems.

Obama to sign executive order on sharing cybersecurity threat information – The Washington Post

President Obama will sign an executive order Friday that urges companies to share cybersecurity-threat information with one another and the federal government.

The order is advisory in nature and comes as the White House will kick off its first summit on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection at Stanford University on Friday. The summit, which will focus on public-private partnerships and consumer protection, is part of a recent White House push to focus on cybersecurity.

It encourages the development of central clearinghouses for companies and the government to share data and creation of centers where data can be shared across specific geographic regions.

Apple Promoting “Great Games with No In-App Purchases” on App Store Front Page – MacStories

Apple has started promoting games that don’t have any In-App Purchases on the front page of the App Store. Currently featured in the UK App Store and likely expanding to the U.S. store later today as part of the App Store’s weekly refresh, the section is called ‘Pay Once & Play’ and it showcases “great games” that don’t require users to pay for extra content through IAPs.

Galaxy 6 Exynos 7420 is 14nm SoC

The Exynos 7420 SoC will be a 14nm octa-core, with four Cortex-A57 cores and four slower Cortex-A53 cores. Most of the chips coming in 2015 will use ARM’s big.LITTLE approach, but in 20nm. Samsung Exynos 7420 is 14nm and is also using Mali-T760 GPU. We have the manufacturing node confirmed by multiple sources but you only need to wait for the March 1 to see the official announcement at the Mobile World Congress Galaxy S6 launch event.

There are many challenges that go along with building any software. Some are obvious and some are more subtle. However, some challenges, as I’ve recently realized, aren’t related to computers at all. Sometime in late October, my wife and I decided that it would be fun to put our house on the market, and “test the waters”. We have been talking about moving out of Arlington, TX (a relatively big city) for years, and heading towards a bit more land, and less city. As fate would have it, we had an offer on our house within 1 week, and all of a sudden needed to find a new house, make repairs, pack, rent a moving truck, etc… etc… Needless to say, this required a lot of time and energy.

Millions Watch World Cup Through Pirated Live Streams

Millions of people have tuned in to pirated World Cup streams thus far, with some games getting nearly half a million unauthorized viewers. TorrentFreak spoke with the French-Israeli content protection firm Viaccess-Orca, who sent roughly 2,000 takedown notices to content platforms that host or link to illegally streamed World Cup matches.

“The success rate varies per content platform but overall we manage to get 35 percent of the streaming links disabled before the game ends. I think this is a great success rate, especially compared to direct download sites,” Leporini informs us.

There are still hundreds of thousands of people getting through. The company estimates that between 100,000 and 500,000 people tune in to an average game. Up until last week, Belgium versus Russia was the most-watched match with 471,541 unauthorized viewers.

New Zealand ISP allows its customers to subscribe to the U.S. version of Netflix

Slingshot_, a local internet provider in New Zealand, wants to give its subscribers a little extra perk: The ISP just added a new “global mode”_to its internet plans that allows its customers to access video services like Netflix or Hulu without getting in trouble for coming from the wrong country

Slingshot’s global mode is essentially a VPN, meaning that it reroutes any traffic through servers situated in other countries. Slingshot subscribers using global mode may look like they’re located in New York

Anyone using this type of VPN likely violates the terms of of service of a streaming site, which is why Slingshot coyly suggests that the service is just for customers who happen to house international visitors

Why Google’s Waze Is Helping Local Governments Track Users

What may be especially tantalizing for planners is the super-accurate read Waze gets on exactly where drivers are going, by pinging their phones’ GPS once every second. The app can tell how fast a driver is moving and even get a complete record of their driving history, according to Waze spokesperson Julie Mossler.

Yet this passively-tracked data “is not something we share,” she adds. Waze, which Google bought last year for $1.3 billion, can turn the data spigots on and off through its application programing interface (API).

Waze has been sharing user data with Rio since summer 2013 and it just signed up the State of Florida. It says more departments of transport are in the pipeline.

But none of these partnerships are making Waze any money. The app’s currency of choice is data. “It’s a two-way street,” says Mossler. “Literally.”

In return for its user updates, Waze gets real-time information from Rio on highways, from road sensors and even from cameras, while Florida will give the app data on construction projects or city events.

Florida’s department of transport could not be reached for comment, but one of its spokesmen recently told a local news station: “We’re going to share our information, our camera images, all of our information that comes from the sensors on the roadway, and Waze is going to share its data with us.”

“This is a numbers game,” Mossler says. “We still want all the information we can get so that our app is as robust as possible.”

The Rise of Thin, Mini and Insert Skimmers

While most card skimmers are made to sit directly on top of the existing card slot, these newer mini-skimmers fit snugly inside the card reader throat, obscuring most of the device. This card skimmer was made to fit inside certain kinds of cash machines made by NCR.

The miniaturized insert skimmer was used in tandem with a tiny spy camera to record each customer’s PIN.

The United States is the last of the G-20 nations that has yet to transition to chip & PIN, which means most ATM cards issued in Europe have a magnetic stripe on them for backwards compatibility when customers travel to this country. Naturally, ATM hackers in Europe will ship the stolen card data over to thieves here in the U.S., who then can encode the stolen card data onto fresh (chipless) cards and pull cash out of the machines here and in Latin America.

NPR conducted an online poll asking listeners if they could hear the difference between cold and hot water simply by listening to the sound of the water being poured. Most listeners were spot-on.

Some users say that Samba is easily configured and that operation is very straight-forward. However, many new users run into problems with its complexity and non-intuitive mechanism.

• Install Samba

sudo apt-get update

• Enable your user account as a Samba user

smbpasswd -e chase

Having troubles resolving computer names?

• Check your DNS settings

• Add the following stanza to smb.conf:

Raspberry Pi Controlled Aquaponics

This build uses the IBC method of Aquaponics, with modifications to include a Raspberry Pi for controlling a pump, solenoid drain, and temperature probes for water and air temperatures. The relays and timing is controlled with python scripting. Temperature and control data is collected every minute and sent to plot.ly for graphing, and future expansion will include sensors for water level and PH values for additional control.

Russia to ditch Intel, AMD in favor of homegrown ‘Baikal’ chips; will use GNU/Linux

According to a Russian business newspaper, state departments and state-run companies have no plans to buy PCs built around Intel or AMD processors. Instead, beginning in 2015, the government will order some 700,000 personal computers annually worth $500 million and 300,000 servers worth $800 million based on the Baikal chip.

Chrome and Firefox already support WebRTC, which together account for 58% of global browser usage (according to StatCounter). IE and Safari will likely add support soon. You Need a Server, but You’ve Got Options

• What codecs to use

• Which security keys to use

• The network route to take (behind a NAT, direct, etc)

• Server can be: Websockets, Google Cloud Message, XHR

• Protocol can be lots of things, like: JSON, SIP, XMPP

• That setups up the p2p link between the WebRTC sessions.

• STUN: WebRTC Uses a STUN Server so WebRTC clients can figure out their public IP from behind a NAT.

• TURN: WebRTC uses a TURN server to provide a cloud fallback if p2p fails. Uses server bandwidth for the relay, but makes the call work in almost every environment.

• WebRTC uses ICE to get the direct IP and at the same time spool up the TURN server, and then makes a decision as to which can be used.

• Prefers STUN for direct p2p.
