Relax, it’s just Ubuntu 15.04. AARGH! IT’S FULL OF SYSTEMD!!!

Review Systemd is here. It’s arrived in Vivid Vervet, the latest, just-released distro of Ubuntu — 15.04.

Most users will notice very little overall difference in this latest Ubuntu release, but it’s this change that packs the biggest punch.

Wily Werewolf is the name of Ubuntu 15.10

“I think Ubuntu has come to represent the leanest, cleanest focus on free software and design for future experiences, and I think it’s time for us now to accelerate that lead. It’s really important for us to be sure that developers that are comfortable developing for GNOME or KDE know that their applications will absolutely be welcome in a converged Ubuntu world.”

“I would like to announce that we are going to ship a device this year, with a manufacturer, that will fit in your pocket, and be a phone, and will give you a desktop experience. That PC pocket experience is real on Ubuntu.”

In some quick-take graphics and gaming tests, we’re seeing something like a 20 percent boost over the previous generation, which is a major upgrade for most users.

Mark Shuttleworth » Smart things powered by snappy Ubuntu Core on ARM and x86

Transactional updates. App store. A huge range of hardware. Branding for device manufacturers.

In this release of Ubuntu Core we’ve added a hardware abstraction layer where platform-specific kernels live. We’re working commercially with the major silicon providers to guarantee free updates to every device built on their chips and boards. We’ve added a web device manager (“webdm”) that handles first-boot and app store access through the web consistently on every device. And we’ve preserved perfect compatibility with the snappy images of Ubuntu Core available on every major cloud today. So you can start your kickstarter project with a VM on your favourite cloud and pick your processor when you’re ready to finalise the device.

Robots embrace Ubuntu as it invades the internet of things

“Snappy” Ubuntu Core came out of Canonical‘s mobile efforts (which are yet to go anywhere) and was made available on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and the Google Cloud Platform at the end of 2014. Now it’s available for smart devices, and Canonical has already got players such as the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), drone outfit Erle Robotics and connected hub maker NinjaBlocks on board.

Security problems need to be made public: Linus Torvalds

In the Q&A session at Linux.conf.au, Torvalds also said he is pleased that the Linux kernel played a part in making free software more approachable and open.

“I actually think one of the things that Linux has been really good at … and this is going to raise a few hackles. I like open source, and I like this whole working together with commercial companies, and this whole notion that you don’t need to vilify people who also do closed source,” he said.

“So, for me personally, one of the big things I’m happy about is that I was part of the group, who tried to take — and now, this is when Tridge will stand up and give the other answer — who tried to take this very us against the world approach of free software and made it more open, not just in name, but also acceptable to people who don’t necessarily believe in our values, but believe that our model is better and that’s, to me, something that Linux was really instrumental in.

“At the same time, I’m really happy about Git too, because I think Git has spread more than the kernel in some respects, and maybe I’ll be remembered more for Git than Linux. We’ll see.”

FreeBSD Plans For The Next Ten Years

Jordan Hubbard, the co-founder of FreeBSD and CTO of iXsystems, gave a talk at this month’s MeetBSD California 2014 conference about the next ten years of FreeBSD.

Besides recapping the twenty-one year history of FreeBSD with some remarks, Hubbard focused on the future of FreeBSD and goals he hopes to see realized for this popular BSD distribution. Among the project ideas Jordan hopes will be tackled for FreeBSD in the next decade include a single/unified configuration data interface for FreeBSD and all services/applications, a centralized event notification system, and service start-up and wrangling improvements.

Electronics are popular gifts for the holidays, but people often overlook the restrictions that manufacturers slip under the wrapping paper. From remote deletion of files to harsh rules about copying and sharing, some gifts take more
than they give. The good news is that there are ethical companies making better devices that your loved ones can enjoy with freedom and privacy. This is the Free Software Foundation (FSF) guide to smarter gifts, compared with their restrictive
counterparts.

Jos is the openSUSE community manager since 2010, and a Free Software evangelist for over 10 years. He’s also an active volunteer in the KDE community.

  • What are some of the main responsibilities of a community manager?

  • Could you describe the role of the openSUSE board?
    • We’ve noticed one of their roles is enforcing “Trademark issues”. To your knowledge has openSUSE ever had a confrontation around branding on third party sites?
  • Why do you suppose we don’t see distros built from openSUSE, like we see with Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, and Fedora?

  • How has working with systemd been? Don’t you have a developer in-house?

  • What are openSUSE’s plans for Wayland?

Viewer Stephan Asks

  • How is life in Berlin?

  • Do you see a point in the future when openSuSE becomes irrelevant to SuSE GmbH, and they will reduce or stop their sponsorship (much like they have already done with Libre Office)?

Viewer pierre4l Asks

  • Regarding the possibility of a Software Center-like experience in openSUSE:

  • Do you think this is a fundamental feature lacking in openSUSE compared to other distros, or do you think there are other priorities?

  • Two or maybe three years ago plans were unhatched at an openSUSE conference in co-operation with developers from other distros. The back end got worked on but it seems there was never a useful front end created. Are there any developments in this respect?

  • Are there any plans to implement such a software center in openSUSE? Would the Bodega idea proposed by Aaron Seigo fit the bill, or would it be more likely that the new Ruby version of YaST sees the existing tools undergo a revamp?

Viewer Martin Asks

  • How would you position openSUSE within the Linux ecosystem? (what kind of users does it attract, how does it differentiate itself)
  • How do you see openSUSE develop in mindshare and marketshare in the future?

openSUSE 13.1

  • YaST has been converted to Ruby for this release? WHU?

  • What is the big thing you’re looking forward to in 13.1?

  • Has “making a Linux” becoming boring? We’ve noticing you’re promoting a lot of upstream features.

Steam Update

– What we know –

The first Steam Machine is a computer that can fit bog standard parts just like a full-size gaming rig, and yet fit into your entertainment center. Valve’s steel and aluminum chassis measures just over 12 inches on a side and is 2.9 inches tall, making it a little bigger than an Xbox 360 and smaller than any gaming PC of its ilk.

Valve designed the case so the parts can breathe individually. The CPU blows air out the top, the power supply out the side, and the graphics card exhaust out back, and none share any airspace within the case.

a system built into Steam that shows you which games your hardware configuration can actually run, and conversely, what hardware you’d need to buy to play a given game well — based on the real-world data about computer configurations that Valve already collects with its Steam Hardware Survey.

First, circle January on your calendar. That’s when the other shoe will drop; Valve’s hardware and software partners will reveal the actual Steam Machines that will ship to consumers, and the games that will come to the Linux platform, at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show.

There will be a number of different Steam Machine boxes on sale in 2014, and Valve expects them to arrive mid-year. Some of those boxes will be far smaller and / or cheaper than Valve’s own prototype unit.

Don’t expect Valve to make Half-Life 3 exclusive to SteamOS to help lift the Linux-based operating system off the ground. “It’s against our philosophy to put a game in jail and say it only works on Steam Machines,” says Valve’s Doug Lombardi. Even though the company locked Half-Life 2 to Steam years ago, the team appears to have thought better of that decision. “That may or may not have been a good idea given the condition Steam was in at the moment.”

Valve’s Anna Sweet says she started talking to partners about Linux three years ago, and games will be surprisingly easy to build. “If you’re using the Unity engine, you’re already done… if you’ve done a Mac game, you’re most of the way there.”

SteamOS won’t just be about games: the company plans to add other services for video and music playback. “However, we are not planning support for spreadsheets,” quips Lombardi.

As promised, the OS is built on Linux (not based on Ubuntu, we’re told, but entirely custom), though you’d never know it as the only interactive layer is all Steam.

Here’s a quick look at some games being played with the prototype version of the Steam Controller – the same version that we’ll be shipping to 300 Steam users later this year.

Speaking to IGN, Valve’s Greg Coomer explained that no one Steam Machine will be considered the “main” device, and instead a variety of different boxes will be available, each with their own set of unique features.

Several press web sites are reporting today about SteamOS, Steam Machines, and the Steam Controller. They came to Steam hardware HQ recently and spent some hands-on time with all three. Here is a roundup of their coverage

The Bankrupt Linux News

I\’m talking about the cults of personality that often dominate the free software community
such cults are contrary to community values. Worse, they can do untold damage, imposing commercial values at the cost of community ones, or dividing the community as those at the center of such cults decide to air their personal grudges in public. They can cause people to discard their own judgment and choose software on the basis of who endorses what, and even to compromise themselves morally by choosing sides in a flame war when they should be condemning everyone involved.

The problem is that journalism as it is practiced today finds cults of personality convenient. Being able to mention celebrities in the headlines increases page views,
As for writers, mentioning someone famous is a quick way of validating a point. Even if the celebrity fails to make a logical argument or offer a scrap of insight, readers are more likely to be swayed to a viewpoint by learning that a celebrity supports it.

However, even when a writer is not stooping to such tactics, not feeding a cult of personality can be difficult. Readers want to hear about what the famous are doing or thinking. They are far less interested in ordinary people, which is why stories about people behind the scenes, while well-meaning, rarely keep people reading unless the writer can quickly establish an interesting angle.

In fact, just as a side-effect of free software has been to create de-centralized means of collaboration, those of us who are free software journalists can try to create our own standards for a story — one that doesn\’t depend on celebrities, but on skilled writing.

That\’s a lofty goal, but it\’s one at which I\’m determined to aim.

Ubuntu’s Juju tool can also now manage LXC Linux containers, an OS-level virtualisation technology that enables more workloads to run on a single machine than full virtualisation, potentially reducing cost for service providers, the firm said.

Juju also now supports bundles, which enables a user to automate deployment of an entire stack without the need for scripting, and export that bundle to share with other admins, according to Baker.

Search results are sent to Canonical, and then to the third parties. Rather that data is “anonymized” when its received by Canonical is irrelevant. Canonical knows where the search originated as it has to send the results back to that same device.

Notes:

  • Installer looks straight outta NT4 / Win2k DOS days.

  • File system choices are FAT32 or ext2

  • In a future where ChromeOS and tablets are a viable platform for the majority of your computing, ReactOS could play the role of enabling legacy support for old Win32 apps. In a sense, further eliminating in shred of legitimacy the Windows platform could hold 7+ years out.

Save Your Data From a Dying Drive with Linux:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

GSmartControl is a graphical user interface for smartctl (from smartmontools package), which is a tool for querying and controlling SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data on modern hard disk drives. It allows you to inspect the drive’s SMART data to determine its health, as well as run various tests on it.

GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read errors.

Basic Syntax

ddrescue /dev/disk /mnt/tuna/partimg/mydisk.img logfile
Be sure to write the image to a separate disk/storage location.

Mount the Image

mount -t loop -o ro mydisk.img /somewhere

Comparison to GNU dd

The following features are available in dc3dd that are not found in GNU dd:

  • On the fly hashing with multiple algorithms (MD5, SHA–1, SHA–256, and SHA–512) with variable sized piecewise hashing
  • Able to write errors directly to a file
  • Combined error log. Groups errors together (e.g. Had 1,023 ‘Input/ouput errors’ between blocks 17–233’ )
  • Pattern wiping. Wipe output files with a single hex digit or a text pattern
  • Verify mode
  • Progress reports. See the progress of the operation while it’s running
  • Split output. Able to split output files into fixed size chunks

The following changes to GNU dd’s behavior were made:

  • On a partial read, the whole block is wiped with zeros. This allows for repeatable reads/hashes of a drive with errors.

“A Geek’s Guide to Digital Forensics, or How i Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Hex Editor”
Presented by Andrew Hoog.

Boot a Failing System

Description: SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions. It comes with a lot of linux software such as system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, …) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It can be used for both Linux and windows computers, and on desktops as well as servers. This rescue system requires no installation as it can be booted from a CD/DVD drive or USB stick, but it can be installed on the hard disk if you wish. The kernel supports all important file systems (ext2/ext3/ext4, reiserfs, btrfs, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs), as well as network filesystems (samba and nfs).

Tuxboot helps you to create a bootable Live USB drive for Clonezilla live, DRBL live, GParted live and Tux2live. It is modified from UNetbootin and runs on both MS Windows and GNU/Linux. You can choose to download the latest version of Clonezilla live, DRBL live, or GParted live ISO/zip file then create the live USB.

Features:

  • Support Clonezilla live, DRBL live, GParted live and Tux2live. Tuxboot uses the syslinux in the ISO/zip file to make your USB drive bootable, so it is compatible with the same version of syslinux boot menu in the ISO/zip file.
  • Auto find the latest version.
  • Download an ISO file and build bootable USB flash drive on the fly.

OSFClone is a free, self-booting solution which enables you to create or clone exact raw disk images quickly and independent of the installed operating system. In addition to raw disk images, OSFClone also supports imaging drives to the open Advance Forensics Format (AFF).

HTC ONE: The Mike Review

The HTC One is the best Android smartphone in the world — period. It combines some of the best materials with the most incredible screen I\’ve seen, and is the fastest and most responsive Android phone I have used.

I can boil the preceding 3,000 or so words into a few brief sentiments for you to chew on: the HTC One is easily the best device that the company has ever crafted, and it\’s perhaps the single nicest Android phone I\’ve ever used. Despite some minor faults, I haven\’t so much as picked up any of the other Android smartphones scattered around my office during my time with the One unless I absolutely had to. It\’s really that good.

The phone — like all phones — does have its shortcomings. There\’s no way to expand the storage, which HTC attempts to address by shipping the base model with 32 gigabytes of memory instead of the more standard 16 gigabytes. There\’s also no way to replace the battery. The power button on the top left of the phone is set at a bit of a downward angle that forces your finger to curl up and over the top edge of the phone in order to access it, which makes waking the phone up a tad cumbersome at times. And people with small hands may still find the 4.7-in.-screened handset too large to use comfortably.

Hoopla:

At a press conference earlier today in Taipei (2pm local time on 6/3/2013),****the Foxconn Technology Group announced their support for Firefox OS, Mozilla\’s open Web mobile operating system. The partnership includes collaboration on the use of the Firefox OS on Foxconn devices to create new, integrated offerings. For complete press release, see Mozilla\’s press center for more details.

As you may have already heard, the former company has signed on to become the 19th member of the latter\’s Firefox OS alliance, and it\’s already working on at least five devices.

Today, Shuttleworth has declared the bug \”closed,\” but the bug wasn\’t fixed as a result of Ubuntu\’s popularity. It was fixed by the rise of iOS and Android. As for Ubuntu, Shuttleworth now says, \”it\’s better for us to focus our intent on excellence in our own right rather than our impact on someone else\’s product.\”

Docker is an open-source engine which automates the deployment of applications as highly portable, self-sufficient containers which are independent of hardware, language, framework, packaging system and hosting provider.

Docker is an open-source implementation of the deployment engine which powers dotCloud, a popular Platform-as-a-Service.

At PyCon Solomon Hykes shows docker to the public for the first time.

You can simply install a vncserver along with firefox 🙂

Share your experiences, thoughts, questions, etc about Linux Containers and we’ll work some of it into tomorrow’s BIG show!

LXC is the userspace control package for Linux Containers, a lightweight virtual system mechanism sometimes described as “chroot on steroids”.

LXC builds up from chroot to implement complete virtual systems, adding resource management and isolation mechanisms to Linux’s existing process management infrastructure.

The LXC package combines these Linux kernel mechanisms to provide a userspace container object, a lightweight virtual system with full resource isolation and resource control for an application or a system.

Ubuntu’s Big Gamble:

Unity Next (aka Qt/QML Unity-Redid)

Mir

The chosen approach was to develop Mir, our own Display Server which is engineered driven by the designs and requirements that our larger vision dictates – no compromises, no crude hacks, fully testable & tested, performance in mind, support for legacy X applications, developed by Ubuntu for Ubuntu.

Perfect Linux Home Server:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

What makes for a good server OS? A few important things to look for:

  • A deep repository of packages, that are reasonably current.
  • Good online support/community for howto’s and guides.
  • Good security.

I was not happy with my big storage options for Linux, I want a native kernel level implementation of ZFS, but I want the cutting edge software options of Linux.

I bought a FreeNAS Mini from iXsystems that I use as my backend storage apliance. In front of that I have an Ubuntu 12.04 that has an NFS mount to the ZFS storage on the FreeNAS Mini box.
