We’re working commercially with the major silicon providers to guarantee free updates to every device built on their chips and boards. We’ve added a web device manager (“webdm”) that handles first-boot and app store access through the web consistently on every device. And we’ve preserved perfect compatibility with the snappy images of Ubuntu Core available on every major cloud today. So you can start your kickstarter project with a VM on your favourite cloud and pick your processor when you’re ready to finalise the device.

Robots embrace Ubuntu as it invades the internet of things

“Snappy” Ubuntu Core came out of Canonical‘s mobile efforts (which are yet to go anywhere) and was made available on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and the Google Cloud Platform at the end of 2014. Now it’s available for smart devices, and Canonical has already got players such as the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), drone outfit Erle Robotics and connected hub maker NinjaBlocks on board.

Security problems need to be made public: Linus Torvalds

In the Q&A session at Linux.conf.au, Torvalds also said he is pleased that the Linux kernel played a part in making free software more approachable and open.

“I actually think one of the things that Linux has been really good at … and this is going to raise a few hackles. I like open source, and I like this whole working together with commercial companies, and this whole notion that you don’t need to vilify people who also do closed source,” he said.

“So, for me personally, one of the big things I’m happy about is that I was part of the group, who tried to take — and now, this is when Tridge will stand up and give the other answer — who tried to take this very us against the world approach of free software and made it more open, not just in name, but also acceptable to people who don’t necessarily believe in our values, but believe that our model is better and that’s, to me, something that Linux was really instrumental in.

“At the same time, I’m really happy about Git too, because I think Git has spread more than the kernel in some respects, and maybe I’ll be remembered more for Git than Linux. We’ll see.”

Among the project ideas Jordan hopes will be tackled for FreeBSD in the next decade include a single/unified configuration data interface for FreeBSD and all services/applications, a centralized event notification system, and service start-up and wrangling improvements.

Steam Update

Happy Birthday To The Steam Linux Client

– What we know –

We play with the Steam Machine, Valve’s game console of the future | The Verge

The first Steam Machine is a computer that can fit bog standard parts just like a full-size gaming rig, and yet fit into your entertainment center. Valve’s steel and aluminum chassis measures just over 12 inches on a side and is 2.9 inches tall, making it a little bigger than an Xbox 360 and smaller than any gaming PC of its ilk.

Valve designed the case so the parts can breathe individually. The CPU blows air out the top, the power supply out the side, and the graphics card exhaust out back, and none share any airspace within the case.

a system built into Steam that shows you which games your hardware configuration can actually run, and conversely, what hardware you’d need to buy to play a given game well — based on the real-world data about computer configurations that Valve already collects with its Steam Hardware Survey.

First, circle January on your calendar. That’s when the other shoe will drop; Valve’s hardware and software partners will reveal the actual Steam Machines that will ship to consumers, and the games that will come to the Linux platform, at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show.

There will be a number of different Steam Machine boxes on sale in 2014, and Valve expects them to arrive mid-year. Some of those boxes will be far smaller and / or cheaper than Valve’s own prototype unit.

Don’t expect Valve to make Half-Life 3 exclusive to SteamOS to help lift the Linux-based operating system off the ground. “It’s against our philosophy to put a game in jail and say it only works on Steam Machines,” says Valve’s Doug Lombardi. Even though the company locked Half-Life 2 to Steam years ago, the team appears to have thought better of that decision. “That may or may not have been a good idea given the condition Steam was in at the moment.”

SteamOS won’t just be about games: the company plans to add other services for video and music playback. “However, we are not planning support for spreadsheets,” quips Lombardi.

The free software media and cults of personality

I\’m talking about the cults of personality that often dominate the free software community
such cults are contrary to community values. Worse, they can do untold damage, imposing commercial values at the cost of community ones, or dividing the community as those at the center of such cults decide to air their personal grudges in public. They can cause people to discard their own judgment and choose software on the basis of who endorses what, and even to compromise themselves morally by choosing sides in a flame war when they should be condemning everyone involved.

The problem is that journalism as it is practiced today finds cults of personality convenient. Being able to mention celebrities in the headlines increases page views,
As for writers, mentioning someone famous is a quick way of validating a point. Even if the celebrity fails to make a logical argument or offer a scrap of insight, readers are more likely to be swayed to a viewpoint by learning that a celebrity supports it.

However, even when a writer is not stooping to such tactics, not feeding a cult of personality can be difficult. Readers want to hear about what the famous are doing or thinking. They are far less interested in ordinary people, which is why stories about people behind the scenes, while well-meaning, rarely keep people reading unless the writer can quickly establish an interesting angle.

In fact, just as a side-effect of free software has been to create de-centralized means of collaboration, those of us who are free software journalists can try to create our own standards for a story — one that doesn\’t depend on celebrities, but on skilled writing.

That\’s a lofty goal, but it\’s one at which I\’m determined to aim.

Ubuntu’s Juju tool can also now manage LXC Linux containers, an OS-level virtualisation technology that enables more workloads to run on a single machine than full virtualisation, potentially reducing cost for service providers, the firm said.

Juju also now supports bundles, which enables a user to automate deployment of an entire stack without the need for scripting, and export that bundle to share with other admins, according to Baker.

Search results are sent to Canonical, and then to the third parties. Rather that data is “anonymized” when its received by Canonical is irrelevant. Canonical knows where the search originated as it has to send the results back to that same device.

Save Your Data From a Dying Drive with Linux:

GSmartControl – Home / News

GSmartControl is a graphical user interface for smartctl (from smartmontools package), which is a tool for querying and controlling SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data on modern hard disk drives. It allows you to inspect the drive’s SMART data to determine its health, as well as run various tests on it.

Ddrescue

GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read errors.

Recover a data disk with ddrescue

Basic Syntax

ddrescue /dev/disk /mnt/tuna/partimg/mydisk.img logfile
Be sure to write the image to a separate disk/storage location.

Mount the Image

mount -t loop -o ro mydisk.img /somewhere

Comparison to GNU dd

The following features are available in dc3dd that are not found in GNU dd:

On the fly hashing with multiple algorithms (MD5, SHA–1, SHA–256, and SHA–512) with variable sized piecewise hashing
Able to write errors directly to a file
Combined error log. Groups errors together (e.g. Had 1,023 ‘Input/ouput errors’ between blocks 17–233’ )
Pattern wiping. Wipe output files with a single hex digit or a text pattern
Verify mode
Progress reports. See the progress of the operation while it’s running
Split output. Able to split output files into fixed size chunks

The following changes to GNU dd’s behavior were made:

On a partial read, the whole block is wiped with zeros. This allows for repeatable reads/hashes of a drive with errors.

The HTC One is the best Android smartphone in the world — period. It combines some of the best materials with the most incredible screen I\’ve seen, and is the fastest and most responsive Android phone I have used.

I can boil the preceding 3,000 or so words into a few brief sentiments for you to chew on: the HTC One is easily the best device that the company has ever crafted, and it\’s perhaps the single nicest Android phone I\’ve ever used. Despite some minor faults, I haven\’t so much as picked up any of the other Android smartphones scattered around my office during my time with the One unless I absolutely had to. It\’s really that good.

The phone — like all phones — does have its shortcomings. There\’s no way to expand the storage, which HTC attempts to address by shipping the base model with 32 gigabytes of memory instead of the more standard 16 gigabytes. There\’s also no way to replace the battery. The power button on the top left of the phone is set at a bit of a downward angle that forces your finger to curl up and over the top edge of the phone in order to access it, which makes waking the phone up a tad cumbersome at times. And people with small hands may still find the 4.7-in.-screened handset too large to use comfortably.

As you may have already heard, the former company has signed on to become the 19th member of the latter\’s Firefox OS alliance, and it\’s already working on at least five devices.

LXC is the userspace control package for Linux Containers, a lightweight virtual system mechanism sometimes described as “chroot on steroids”.

LXC builds up from chroot to implement complete virtual systems, adding resource management and isolation mechanisms to Linux’s existing process management infrastructure.

Docker – Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu Raring already comes with the 3.8 kernel, so we don’t need to install it. However, not all systems have AUFS filesystem support enabled, so we need to install it.

Docker is available as a Ubuntu PPA (Personal Package Archive), hosted on launchpad which makes installing Docker on Ubuntu very easy.

What makes for a good server OS? A few important things to look for:

A deep repository of packages, that are reasonably current.
Good online support/community for howto’s and guides.
Good security.

I was not happy with my big storage options for Linux, I want a native kernel level implementation of ZFS, but I want the cutting edge software options of Linux.

I bought a FreeNAS Mini from iXsystems that I use as my backend storage apliance. In front of that I have an Ubuntu 12.04 that has an NFS mount to the ZFS storage on the FreeNAS Mini box.
