Single Verizon IP Address Used For Hundreds of Windows 7 Activations

A presumed pirate with an unusually large appetite for activating Windows 7 has incurred the wrath of Microsoft. In a lawsuit filed in a Washington court, Microsoft said that it logged hundreds of suspicious product activations from a single Verizon IP address and is now seeking damages. Who he, she or they are behind address 74.111.202.30 is unknown at this point, but according to Microsoft they’re responsible for some serious Windows pirating. “As part of its cyberforensic methods, Microsoft analyzes product key activation data voluntarily provided by users when they activate Microsoft software, including the IP address from which a given product key is activated,” the lawsuit reads. The company says that its forensic tools allow the company to analyze billions of activations of software and identify patterns “that make it more likely than not” that an IP address associated with activations is one through which pirated software is being activated.

Anyone who follows the people behind GOG—a subsidiary of _Witcher 3 _developer CD Projekt Red—knows they’re as anti-DRM as it gets.

Snoosaphone Writes:

Hello JB,

Just wanted to send a message to everyone at Jupiter Broadcasting to let you know how wonderful I’ve found all of the shows. I got hooked on LAS and soon got sucked into listening/watching every single show (sometimes at work). It would be quite amazing to work with a group such as yours though I’m not entirely sure if that could happen due to my home residing in Minnesota.

Which brings me to the second part. If there is a way to help out with anything from a distance let me know! Not sure what the needs are for JB, but I thought it would be nice to at least offer and see where it goes.

On to the final and quite a bit more serious point to this email. After watching Tech Talk Today Ep. 137, I’ve been thinking about whether or not it would be good to share my thoughts on the health reboot for Chris. Finally the barriers have broken down and here it is: There is one primarily glaring issue for all of the problems he/you are having, which is stress (or rather the handling of). Over many years I had dealt with many of the same issues, and in some ways still do. The number one thing that helped me was taking a step back. Putting distance between oneself and the sources of stress. Now of course that is highly easy to say and very difficult to implement, but it’s necessary to look at all of the angles in order to solve a problem. The number one solution I found for my stress management came down to taking a 10 minute “meditation” a couple times a week. The fixes are sometimes small and easy, so just keep looking if you haven’t found yours yet.

Of course, I’m a random person on the internet and such advice should be taken skeptically, but a it seemed like a good perspective to share.

Best regards,
Snoosaphone

WSJ: Google’s Carrier Experiment Could Launch This Month

In fact, sources told the WSJ that it would only work with the latest Nexus 6 phone.

The service will switch between Wi-Fi, Sprint and T-Mobile. A pretty tough piece of networking when you consider that Sprint is a CDMA network and T-Mobile is a GSM network. Because of all the network hopping, Google needs to tweak the hardware and software of devices that use its network. This is why the Nexus 6 will be the device of choice, Google can’t get in to tweak the settings of phones from other manufacturers.

Google’s carrier ambitions are more of an experiment into what can be accomplished than a full-on assault on carriers. So don’t expect to start seeing Google running ads with unlimited data, text and voice offers anytime soon.

Self-Driving Cars Will Be In 30 US Cities By the End of Next Year – Slashdot

Automated vehicle pilot projects will roll out in the U.K. and in six to 10 U.S. cities this year, with the first unveiling projected to be in Tampa Bay, Florida as soon as late spring. The following year, trial programs will launch in 12 to 20 more U.S. locations, which means driverless cars will be on roads in up to 30 U.S. cities by the end of 2016. The trials will be run by Comet LLC, a consulting firm focused on automated vehicle commercialization. … they’re focusing on semi-controlled areas and that the driverless vehicles will serve a number of different purposes—both public and private. The vehicles themselves—which are all developed by Veeo Systems—will even vary from two-seaters to full-size buses that can transport 70 people. At some locations, the vehicles will drive on their own paths, occasionally crossing vehicle and pedestrian traffic, while at others, the vehicles will be completely integrated with existing cars.

Sleep and Fear

  • A fear memory was reduced in people by exposing them to the memory over and over again while they slept
  • The Study
  • Scientists have shown that sleep is very important for strengthening new memories
  • Previous projects have shown that spatial learning and motor sequence learning can be enhanced during sleep
  • If the results of this new study continue to show promising results it will be the first time that emotional memory have been manipulated in humans during sleep
  • What it Could Mean
  • It offers the potential of a new way to enhance typical daytime treatments of phobias, through exposure therapy by adding a nighttime component
  • If it can be extended to pre-existing fear, the bigger picture is that, perhaps, the treatment of phobias can be enhanced during sleep.\”
  • The Test
  • 15 healthy human subjects received mild electric shocks while seeing two different faces
  • Subjects also received different odorants to smell with each face such as woody, clove, new sneaker, lemon or mint
  • This caused the brain to associate the faces and corresponding smells with fear
  • During the slow wave sleep state, when memory consolidation is thought to occur, a smell was represented without the corresponding face and shock
  • When a given smell was reintroduced during sleep, it was activating the memory of that face over and over again
  • The Results
  • When the subjects woke up they saw the face linked to the smell they had been exposed to during sleep
  • Their fear reactions were lower than their fear reactions to the other face
  • Fear was measured in two ways, through small amounts of sweat in the skin, similar to a lie detector test and through neuroimaging with fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging).
  • The fMRI results showed changes in regions associated with memory and changes in patterns of brain activity in regions associated with emotion
  • These brain changes reflected a decrease in reactivity that was specific to the targeted face image associated with the odorant presented during sleep

Lunar Formation and Age

  • New research suggests that the moon is younger than scientists had previously believed
  • Current Leading Lunar Formation Theory
  • Suggest that the Moon was created when a mysterious planet, one the size of Mars or larger, slammed into the Earth about 4.56 billion years ago, just after the solar system came together
  • New analyses of lunar rocks suggest that the moon, is actually between 4.4 billion and 4.45 billion years old
+This analysis would mean the moon would 100 million years younger than previously thought and would reshape scientists\’ understanding of the early Earth
  • Opens New Questions
  • Giving the Earth another 100 million years of development before a giant impact could have provided enough time for a primordial atmosphere to develop
  • If that did have time to occur, could an impact have been able to \’blown off\’ that atmosphere
  • Age of Smaller Solar System Bodies
  • Scientists are very sure that the solar system\’s age is 4.568 billion years
  • They can pin down the formation times of relatively small bodies such as asteroids precisely
  • By noting when these objects underwent extensive melting, from the heat generated by the collision and fusion of these objects\’ building-block \”planetesimals.\”
  • Analysis of meteorites that came from the asteroid Vesta and eventually rained down on Earth reveals that the 330-mile-wide (530 kilometers) space rock is 4.565 billion years old
  • Vesta cooled relatively quickly and is too small to have retained enough internal heat to drive further melting or volcanism
  • Age of Larger Solar System Bodies
  • The age of larger solar-system bodies is harder to narrow down
  • Earth likely took longer to grow to full size compared to a small asteroid like Vesta
  • Every step in its growth tends to erase, or at least cloud, earlier events
  • Lunar formation Impact Event
  • Currently the \’lunar formation impact event\’ puts the age of the Moon at around 4.56 billion years ago
  • As scientists refine techniques and technology improves, estimates are pushing the moon\’s formation date farther forward in time
  • The moon is thought to have harbored a global ocean of molten rock shortly after its formation
  • Currently, the most precisely determined age for the lunar rocks that arose from that ocean is 4.360 billion years
  • Here on Earth, scientists have found signs in several locations of a major melting event that occurred around 4.45 billion years ago
  • Evidence is building that the catastrophic collision that formed the moon and reshaped Earth occurred around that time, rather than 100 million years or so before

Infant Blood Sugar

  • Newborns with low blood sugar sometimes have to go to the intensive care unit for intravenous infusions of glucose
  • A new study has found that rubbing a sweet gel onto the insides of babies’ cheeks can also help with low blood sugar
  • Neonatal Hypoglycemia
  • Low blood sugar in newborns, or neonatal hypoglycemia, occurs when the tiny body needs more glucose to meet energy needs than is available in the bloodstream
  • Prolonged hypoglycemia risks neurological injury.
  • Prevalence
  • Low blood glucose shows up in 5 to 15 percent of otherwise healthy newborns as measured by blood tests
  • Of note, doctors typically don’t run the analysis on every newborn
  • Doctors often only call for blood sugar blood tests if they see symptoms, such as poor color, seizures, irritability, lethargy, jittery behavior and a lack of interest in feeding
  • Although many infants with low blood glucose don’t have such symptoms
  • One report designates at-risk infants as those who are born preterm, have diabetic mothers, or are either large or small for their gestational age
  • The Study
  • In the new study, researchers identified 237 apparently healthy newborns who had one of those risk factors or who were feeding poorly
  • Half of the babies were randomly assigned to get a gel made of dextrose, a form of glucose, rubbed on the inner cheeks up to six times over 48 hours; the rest received a placebo gel
  • Results in the Following Week
  • Placebo gel group | 30 babies, 25%, were placed in intensive care for hypoglycemia
  • Dextrose gel group | 16 babies, 13%, were placed in intensive care for hypoglycemia
  • Previous Usage
  • Dextrose had been tried in the 1990s as an oral rub for infants but wasn’t fully tested or put into widespread use

New Horizons Message Initiative

  • SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) have created a petition called the New Horizons Message Initiative
  • This petition is asking NASA officials to upload a yet-to-be-determined crowdsourced message from humanity onto the New Horizons craft after its encounter with the Pluto system
  • \”This website is an opportunity for anyone who is interested to sign a petition that asks NASA to approve the future use of the spacecraft\”
  • Were There Plans About This from NASA?
  • Before New Horizons launched, NASA officials discussed including an onboard message, but decided against it due to a small team on a tight budget
  • The team didn\’t want to get distracted from the project
  • New Horizons Message Initiative
  • The group would need formal permission from the agency and sub-support to make this happen
  • NASA funds will not be used for the project, but initiative officials are asking for support from private individuals.
  • The idea is to use some of the spacecraft\’s memory to store messages from earthlings beamed up to the probe, when New Horizons completes its mission
  • They say that it might be possible to reprogram about 100 megabytes of its memory and upload a new sights and sounds of Earth

Lightsaber Tech?!?!?!

  • Viewer Feedback : Check This Out
  • Nikki, Summer SciByte co-host, current STOked radio co-host
  • What’s Going On?
  • Researchers have found a way to bind photons together much like molecules
  • This discovery goes against what scientists previously understood of photons: that elementary light particles are massless loners that do not interact with each other.
  • Most of the properties of light we know about originate from the fact that photons are massless, and that they do not interact with each other
  • The Test
  • Researchers fired a couple of photons into a cloud of rubidium – a chemical element belonging to the metal group – in a vacuum chamber cooled to just a few degrees above absolute zero.
  • When the photons exited the other side of the cloud of atoms the researchers were surprised to see the pair emerge as a single molecule.
  • The cloud they passed through is a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other strongly that they begin to act as though they have mass, and they bind together to form molecules
  • Rydberg Blockade
  • Rydberg blockade states that when an atom has energy imparted to it, nearby atoms cannot be excited to the same degree
  • The pair of photons moved through the cloud of atoms, the first photon excited atoms, but had to move forward before the second photon could do the same.
  • The pair of photons pushed and pulled each other through the cloud like atomic interaction, which made these two photons behave like a molecule
  • The Future
  • The team is hoping to use their newly discovered state of matter in the advancement of quantum computing

It stayed in orbit for about three months. Sputnik fell from the sky on 4 Jan 1958. The 184-lb satellite had transmitted a radio signal picked up around the world, and instrumentation for temperature measurement

Earth’s nearest extra-solar neighbor

  • Stats
  • 4.4 light years away
  • 25 times closer than the Earth is to the sun
  • A ‘year’ lasts just 3.236 days
  • Surface temperature of around 1,200 degrees Celsius
  • Significance
  • The fact that a rocky planet was found so close to Alpha Centauri B suggests there could be more planets in the same system
  • There’s also a good chance that Alpha Centauri A — the bigger, binary partner of Alpha Centauri B — also hosts planets
  • However, because Alpha Centauri A is bigger, brighter and more rambunctious, any small planets orbiting it would be harder to find.
  • Previous observations indicate that there are no planets more massive than Neptune hovering around any of Alpha Centauri’s three stars
  • Of Note
  • There is 10–15% chance that the planet passes between Alpha Centauri B and Earth. If so, astronomers could watch for dips in starlight
  • However Kepler isn’t pointed anywhere near Alpha Centauri
  • Canada’s MOST microsatellite, might be able to detect the planet’s dark fingerprint and determine its radius, allowing scientists to calculate its density and probable ingredients
  • Travel to?
  • A space probe accelerated to 10 percent the speed of light [~67 million mph / 107 million kph] would be in transit for 40 years.
  • The probe would also have to be capable of managing extreme temperature variations, remaining functional for decades, communicating with Earth from light-years away and orbiting a small planet close to its sun without becoming a stellar snack

‘Citizen Scientists’ and new Exoplanets

  • Last time on SciByte
  • Talking Robots & Voyager 1 | SciByte 51 – Eye spy an exoplanet [June 19, 2012]
  • The planet PH1
  • PH1 orbits its host stars every 137 days, and is thought to be a gas giant a bit larger than Neptune [~6x Earth]
  • The mass of the planet itself is not currently known but there is a limit of no more than half that of Jupiter, so this is definitely a planet.
  • The binary star systems
  • The binary star system it orbits has stars that are 1.5 and 0.41 times the mass of the Sun and orbit each other just over 20 days
  • Beyond the planet’s orbit at about 1000 AU (roughly 1000 times the distance between Earth and the Sun) is a second pair of stars orbiting the planetary system.
  • Although it may seem far, it is actually much closer than the nearest stars are to the Sun, so anyone viewing the sky from PH1 would have a spectacular view of all four stars
  • Of Note
  • Only six planets are known to orbit two stars
  • PlanetHunters has announced discoveries before, but this is the first that have been confirmed with further data from radial velocity measurements
  • Because they were able to detect the gravitational effect of the planet on the star it can be ‘officially’ labeled as a planet not simply a candidate
  • The PlanetHunters team has also ‘discovered’ a planet orbiting around both of a pair of binary stars, it didn’t make the news at that time because the Kepler team has already discovered it

Games and Sleep

  • The low down
  • Research in a Sleep Laboratory found that prolonged video gaming immediately before bed caused significant sleep disruptions
  • 17 participants played either 50 or 150 minutes on two different nights
  • 27-minute loss in total sleep time after 150 minutes of gaming based on the polysomnography tests
  • There was a 39-minute delay in sleep onset according to the participants’ sleep diaries
  • In addition REM sleep was reduced by 12 minutes among the teens who played for over two hours
  • Winding down at night with a video game might not be the best idea
  • Significance
  • Teens who played for 50 minutes had almost no trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Sleep onset delay almost doubled to 39 minutes when they played for two and a half hours
  • While the study did not compare the effects of violent versus nonviolent video games past research showed little difference in teens who watched 50 minutes of the March of the Penguins documentary or played 50 minutes of Call of Duty 4, a violent videogame, before bed
  • Of Note
  • At the moment, one hour of gaming does not seem to affect sleep

Private Space Travel

  • The low down
  • The three different companies have been chosen by NASA to develop private space taxis
  • They are all making substantial progress toward launching people into orbit within the next few years
  • SpaceX
  • Work on the Dragon is now focused on outfitting the capsule to carry up to seven people by adding a launch abort capability and life support system, as well as designing spacesuits and the crew cabin layout.
  • SpaceX could make its first crewed test flights in mid–2015
  • Boeing
  • Is working on its CST–100 vehicle that will fly atop United Launch Alliance’s Atlas 5 rocket
  • The Atlas 5 has a proven track record launching unmanned satellites
  • The CST–100 is designed to carry up to seven people, and return to touch down on land via parachutes and airbags.
  • The company just recently completed a preliminary design milestone called integrated systems review, and plans to set the vehicle’s final design plans with a critical design review in April 2014
  • Boeing could be ready for the first people to fly on CST–100 in 2016
  • Sierra Nevada’s
  • The Dream Chaser, differs from the Dragon and CST–100 cone-shaped capsules in its winged space plane design.
  • Even and launch on the Atlas 5, and is targeting a first manned launch in 2016 or 2017
  • Of Note
  • While all three companies are initially developing their spacecraft to serve NASA, they intend eventually to carry a wide range of passengers, including space tourists, scientists and astronauts from countries without their own launch vehicles

‘Somewhat ‘ Universal Translating Phone

  • Japan’s biggest mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, said Monday it will launch a translation service that lets people chat over the telephone in several different languages.
  • The low down
  • The free application for subscribers will give two-way voice and text readouts of conversations between Japanese speakers and those talking in English, Chinese or Korean with a several-second delay
  • It will be available for use on smartphones and tablet computers with the Android operating system
  • Customers will also be able to call landlines using the service
  • Of Note
  • Voice-to-text readouts will soon be available in French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai
  • The service does not offer perfect translations and has trouble deciphering some dialects
  • There is a separate service that lets users translate menus and signage using the smartphone camera

SCIENCE CALENDAR

Looking back

  • Oct 28, 1971 | 41 years ago | British satellite | Britain became the sixth nation with its satellite launched into orbit by a Black Arrow rocket from Woomera, Australia. The Prospero, a Black Knight 1 satellite, had 86-kg mass at launch, 4-m diam. and transmitted on 137.56 MHz (still heard in 2000, although the onboard tape recorder failed after 730 replays on 24 May 1973). Its mission was to test solar cells and other technology experiments. Prospero is the only satellite launched by a British rocket. The Black Arrow was a 3-stage rocket only 13 m high. The Royal Aircraft Establishment developed the space launcher Black Arrow from 1964 until the project was cancelled by the British government in July 1971. The USSR’s Sputnik was the first satellite
