Plasma 5.12 LTS Beta Makes Your Desktop Smoother and Speedier

Plasma 5.12 LTS Beta is the second long term support release from the Plasma 5 team. We have been working hard focusing on speed and stability for this release. Boot time to desktop has been improved by reviewing the code for anything which blocks execution. The team has been triaging and fixing bugs in every aspect of the codebase, tidying up artwork, removing corner cases and ensuring cross desktop integration. For the first time we offer our Wayland integration on long term support so you can be sure we will continue to fix bugs over the coming releases.

KDE’s KWin Now Considers Its X11 Code To Be Under An “Eternal Feature Freeze”

With KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS, the KWin window manager / compositor’s X11/X.Org code will now be under an “eternal feature freeze” as development will focus more on Wayland.
KWin maintainer Martin Flöser has confirmed the KWin/X11 code is now considered feature frozen as for Plasma 5.13 and the future they will be focused on Wayland. Features may get added for the KWin on X11, but only when it’s in common code-paths and not writing any new X11-specific feature code.

Linus prefers the XPS 13

Right now the XPS13 stands out due to the thin bezel, which really does maximize the screen size for the size of machine. That was really what made me pick it for Daniela in the first place. It just ends up hitting my two primary goals very well: small and portable, but with the biggest screen you can cram into that size.
+ Linus bought two. One for him, and one for his daughter.

Plex vs Emby

Using Kodi Directly vs Plex/Emby

  • Plex and Emby are not as fast as just basic Kodi pointing at some files on a local disk.
  • Requires fairly reliable networking.
  • Much better media identification.
  • Real, easy to use for you and family streaming.
  • Plex sharing.

Plex and Emby Licensing

Plex
Emby
Emby with the premium Emby Premiere features unlocked.

At some point, the developers of Emby added a nasty nag screen before playback. Worse, you need to wait a few seconds before being able to dismiss it. They refuse to address removing it as seen here.
This is bullshit for a GPLv2 licensed product. Of course someone is going to fork Emby to remove it.
So while my main motivation was to remove the nag screen, unlocking all the premium features proved the simplest way.

Starbucks Coffee Runs LINUX!

Nick B. – ” Ok, so longtime follower of the show. Found out today that when booting our 1 cup in-office Starbucks coffee maker, the boot screen looked familiar in that it is running Slax Linux. Found this amusing, however unsettling since the OS boots fine, but there is a control board issue that halts the coffee making process. Maybe more QA on the Printed Circuit Board QA process! Thanks guys, and love the show.”

Major Security Flaws Found in ImageMagick

There are multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick, a package commonly used by web services to process images. One of the vulnerabilities can lead to remote code execution (RCE) if you process user submitted images. The exploit for this vulnerability is being used in the wild.

If you use ImageMagick or an affected library, we recommend you mitigate the known vulnerabilities by doing at least one of these two things (but preferably both!):

  • Verify that all image files begin with the expected “magic bytes” corresponding to the image file types you support before sending them to ImageMagick for processing. (see FAQ for more info)

  • Use a policy file to disable the vulnerable ImageMagick coders. The global policy for ImageMagick is usually found in “/etc/ImageMagick”. The below policy.xml example will disable the coders EPHEMERAL, URL, MVG, and MSL.

Microsoft Is Buying Mobile Cross-Platform Development Company Xamarin

Linux users campaign after Microsoft ‘neglects’ Skype with a week of downtime-

The _open letter to Microsoft_said: “It was a shitty move to not update the client for three years, which resulted in this, mostly. It was annoying that you ignored almost every tweet to @SkypeSupport about issues with Skype for Linux. But it is absolutely disgraceful that you dropped the Linux client BEFORE any alternatives are available and without telling your users.”

GPL Violations Related to Combining ZFS and Linux

However, our conclusion is simple: Conservancy and the Linux copyright
holders in the GPL Compliance Project for
Linux Developers
believe that distribution of ZFS binaries is a GPL
violation and infringes Linux’s copyright. We are also concerned that it may
infringe Oracle’s copyrights in ZFS. As such, we again ask Oracle to respect
community norms against license proliferation and simply relicense its
copyrights in ZFS under a GPLv2-compatible license.

TechSNAP Take on SFC ZFS Finding

Canonical’s counter-argument is that “The CDDL cannot apply to the Linux kernel because zfs.ko is a self-contained file system module — the kernel itself is quite obviously not a derivative work of this new file system.”

  • VMware is using parts of the Linux kernel in their proprietary ESXi
product, including the entire SCSI mid-layer, USB support, radix tree
    and many, many device drivers.

    • as is generally known, Linux is licensed under GNU GPLv2, a
      copyleft-style license.
    • VMware has modified all the code they took from the Linux kernel and
integrated them into something they call vmklinux.
    • VMware has modified their proprietary virtualization OS kernel
vmkernel with specific API/symbol to interact with vmklinux
    • at least in earlier versions of ESXi, virtually any block device
access has to go through vmklinux and thus the portions of Linux
      they took
    • vmklinux and vmkernel are dynamically linked object files that are
      linked together at run-time
    • the Linux code they took runs in the same execution context (address
space, stack, control flow) like the vmkernel.

When, in this mode of employment, the CDDL-licensed code implementing the filesystem is combined with the module-specific translation layer and the result is then statically or dynamically linked into the Linux kernel, the resulting binary is licensed to all users under the terms of GPLv2, and only GPLv2, as the license requires. This happens because CDDL gives permission for binary forms of the code it licenses to be released under any license, and the license terms in effect are those of GPLv2. The making of the binary itself does not result in infringement of the kernel copyrights, or a violation of GPLv2’s terms.

“The Nvidia-graphics-modules provides pre-compiled non-free kernel modules. Several lawyers and people believe this to be a violation of the GPL license used by the kernel. This interpretation is consistent with our position on ZFS modules, which we also ship in source code only. As such, the work is not distributable and should be removed from the archive in all suites, ASAP,” Julian Andres Klode said.

Parse Shutdown Savings

If the Parse platform is still appropriate or your app, then the migration process is very doable and something we’d be happy to help with. In fact we are running a promotion from now until April 15th, 2016 to migrate your app for iOS and/or Android to a Parse-powered server for a flat one time fee of $500.

HTC’s Desire Eye wants to be the king of selfies | The Verge

Now HTC is announcing the Desire Eye, a mid-range phone that the company says will be the selfie phone to rule them all. It will be available from AT&T later this year at a price that’s yet to be determined. Where all other smartphones have their best cameras on the back of the phone, the Desire Eye has the same camera on the front as it does on the back. It’s a 13-megapixel camera — the highest resolution front-facing camera to date — and features autofocus, a dual LED flash on both the front and back of the phone, and 1080p video recording.

It has a 5.2-inch, 1080p display that looks great and has wide viewing angles. It has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor paired with 2GB of RAM as HTC’s flagship One M8. Its soft-touch plastic finish isn’t as premium as the all-metal chassis’ of the M8 or iPhone 6.

It’s IPX7 water resistant, so it can be dunked under a meter of water for up to 30 minutes without issue.

There’s a mode to take a picture with both the front and rear cameras at the same time, a la FrontBack, and an ultra-gimmicky mode that lets you insert yourself into a scene using both cameras. You can also merge your face with another person’s face to create a mutant selfie.

HTC Re camera Preview – CNET

The little periscope-shaped camera (right-angle flashlight and asthma inhaler are also suitable) is designed so that you stop watching and recording life through your smartphone’s screen and get in on the experience instead.

At the business end you have an f2.8 lens with an ultrawide 146-degree angle of view with a 1/2.3-inch 16-megapixel CMOS sensor behind it. That sensor is bigger than what you’d find in most smartphones, but average for point-and-shoot cameras and most POV/action cams.

The Re connects to your smartphone via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Launch the Re app (which will be available for Android and iOS later this year) and it initiates the connection process via Wi-Fi. Once connected you can control the camera, view and transfer content and change settings. With the app you can also activate a time-lapse mode so you can take a series of photos over a period of time (you set the frequency and length of time) and turn them into a movie.

Along with the tripod mount on the bottom you’ll find a Micro-USB port and a microSD card slot for storage. An 8GB card is included, but the camera supports cards up to 128GB.

Though HTC pitches the Re more as a lifestyle cam like Polaroid’s Cube than a rugged action cam for extreme sports, the body is waterproof to 1 meter (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes without an additional housing.

The HTC Re camera will be coming to the US first in late October/early November and the UK in November. It’ll cost $199 and somewhere around £160-£170 in the UK.

Google Patches Chrome for 159 Security Vulnerabilities

In total, Google is patching 159 security vulnerabilities in Chrome 38, which is one of the highest numbers of security-related fixes for any single browser ever released. Going a step further, Google noted that it also made “113 relatively minor fixes” that it found with its open-source Memory Sanitizer application. Other browser vendors likely might have also counted the 113 memory fixes in their security totals, so for argument’s sake, let’s say that Chrome 38 fixes 272 security related issues.

As part of the security updates, Google is paying out $75,633.70 in bug bounties to a number of security researchers for properly reporting issues to Google. The top award is a $27,633.70 award paid to Jüri Aedla for a vulnerability identified as CVE-2014-3188. That vulnerability could lead to remote code execution and is triggered by a number of bugs in the Google V8 JavaScript engine and the Inter-Process Communication (IPC) function.

Unfortunately for Microsoft’s Windows Phone, Apple’s iOS devices dominated the high end of the market, while Android—with 84.7-percent global share in smartphone operating systems—tended to dominate the low-end, sub-$200 market. That left precious little room for Windows Phone, even though recent efforts to lower the platform’s licensing costs should have helped propel it in the market.

“With many of its OEM partners focusing on the sub-$200 segments, Android has been reaping huge gains within emerging markets,” said Ramon Llamas, a research manager with IDC’s mobile phone team, in a statement. “During the second quarter, 58.6 percent of all Android smartphone shipments worldwide cost less than $200 off contract, making them very attractive compared to other devices. With the recent introduction of Android One, in which Google offers reference designs below $100 to Android OEMs, the proportion of sub-$200 volumes will climb even higher.”

If Linux Distros Were Superheroes Ubuntu Would Be Superman

If Ubuntu-based Linux distributions were comic book superheroes, who would be what and why? That’s the question I’ve been mulling over for the last half hour.

List of Possible Silk Road Bitcoin Bidders Leaked by US Marshals

A list of individuals interested in the auction of the 30,000 bitcoins confiscated from the now-defunct Silk Road black marketplace has been leaked via email by the US Marshals Service (USMS), the US government agency confirmed.

In a statement to CoinDesk, Lynzey Donahue, a US Marshals spokeswoman, indicated that the emailer had intended to send all the recipients an attached informational document and to blind copy all those it intended to contact. The US Marshals service is the federal agency that has been charged with carrying out the auction of the bitcoins, originally seized by the FBI.

T-Mobile’s ‘Music Freedom’ is a great feature — and a huge problem | The Verge

T-Mobile has decided, arbitrarily, that some of the data traveling over its pipes should count against a cap, while other data should not. What’s to stop it from using data cap exemptions as a punitive measure against content providers that aren’t on good terms with T-Mobile (or its parent company Deutsche Telekom)?

Japan’s ruling party says won’t regulate bitcoin for now

Japan’s leading Liberal Democratic Party said it decided against regulating bitcoin for the time being, after the collapse of Tokyo-based bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox prompted them to consider more scrutiny of the virtual currency.

Today kicked off the first day of the Consumer Electronics Show in beautiful Las Vegas! And while a hundred different gadgets are showing up, the Tablet Cavalcade really took center stage.

Tune in to hear some of Chris & Jeremy’s favorite gadgets that surfaced today, and the impact they could have on the entire future of mankind! And maybe martians, too!

Show Feeds:

Best of Picks – DAY 1:

Vizio Tablet
The device has an IR blaster built in to the top, and it can function as a universal remote.

T-Mobile
Not much specific to this gadget to talk about, but the article includes a bunch of videos of Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb) in action.

Motorola XOOM
Chris thinks that this is THE tablet to watch in the coming months, as the top competitor with the infamous iPad.
GREAT specs, but no price point listed.  Assuming it’ll be pricey, though.

Motorola Atrix
This nifty gadget is pretty much a phone that comes with a netbook-type peripheral that converts the entire phone into a laptop-style interface!

Samsung DualView
A second LCD on the FRONT of the camera!  GENIUS!
Could this be the end of duck-lips and dirty mirror shots?  Or will this create a renaissance in the world of half-naked teenagers sending dirty pics to one another?

Next Gen MS Surface
Finally eliminating the cameras and bulky under-carriage, the Surface has lifted itself up into the current generation of touch technology!
Especially impressive is the “Pixel Sense” technology that they use inside their screen that, “Turns every pixel into a camera” making the unit able to read words and sense all ten (or twenty!) input points separately.
