Android phones rooted by “most serious” Linux escalation bug ever

I__ndependent security researcher David Manouchehri told Ars that this _proof-of-concept code that explo__its Dirty Cow on Android_gets devices close to root. With a few additional lines, Manouchehri’s code provides persistent root access on all five of the Android devices he has tested.

Dirty COW (which, naturally, has its own logo and web page, though this one is a
bit on the satirical side) is a race condition in the kernel’s memory-management
subsystem. By timing things right, a local attacker can exploit the
copy-on-write mechanism to turn a read-only mapping of a file into a
writable mapping; with that, a file that should not be writable can be
written to. It doesn’t take much imagination to see how the ability to
overwrite files could be used to escalate privileges in any of a number of
ways.

Loving deepin 15.3

Hi guys. Long term Linux user (+- 12 years), and huge openSuse and Arch Linux (Manjaro) fan. Been running Manjaro for the last couple of months. I’m always looking for a polished desktop experience. I installed the latest Deepin Linux version on my notebook. I’m blown away at how well polished this distro is.

The software store is amazing! Been running for two weeks, and loving it. I’ve never used WPS Office, always been Open Office user, and was blown away on how polished WPS Office were! Even the built in ‘guake’ like drop down terminal impressed me. I think I’ve found my new favorite distro. It almost feels ‘Apple’ like polished to me.

The one ‘niggle’ was that the default deepin file manager application is very basic. Probably the average user want’s it simple, but I quickly installed Nautilus from the app store, and replaced the dock on the bar.

Would be great if you guys did a review on Deepin 15.3. I’m stumped.

Surround 360 is now open source

Today we officially open-sourced the specs for Surround 360, our high-quality 3D-360 hardware and software video capture system. The open source project includes the hardware camera design and software stitching code that makes end-to-end 3D-360 video capture possible in one system — from shooting to video processing.

We believe making the camera design and stitching code freely available on GitHub will accelerate the growth of the 3D-360 ecosystem — developers will be able to leverage the code, and content creators can use the camera in their productions. Anyone will be able to contribute to, build on top of, improve, or distribute the camera based on these specs.

The fall of Open Source

The moment that Open Source becomes primarily about “my time” is the moment that Open Source is no longer a movement. It is no longer an ideology. It is no longer about fairness, freedom, equality, rights, or the greater good.

A New Tool Against Cyber Threats — Medium

It’s one of the great paradoxes of our Information Age — the very technologies that empower us to do great good can also be used by adversaries to inflict great harm. The same technologies that help keep our military strong are used by hackers in China and Russia to target our defense contractors and systems that support our troops. Networks that control much of our critical infrastructure — including our financial systems and power grids — are probed for vulnerabilities by foreign governments and criminals.

Cyber intrusions and attacks — many of them originating overseas — are targeting our businesses, stealing trade secrets, and costing American jobs. Iranian hackers have targeted American banks. The North Korean cyber attack on Sony Pictures destroyed data and disabled thousands of computers. In other recent breaches that have made headlines, more than 100 million Americans had their personal data compromised, including credit card and medical information.

Living life on the S6 Edge | The Verge

The Galaxy S6 Edge also doesn’t play too nicely with Google’s Material Design. Samsung has my eternal appreciation for following Google’s lead in moving to a cleaner, more minimalist interface, but Material Design emphasizes flatness and geometric regularity, which the Edge’s warping side screens disturb. They create a sort of vignette effect on white pages and are a hindrance rather than a help when editing photos.

Benchmarks from our hands-on with the new Hisense Chromebook indicate that this processor holds up well compared to older ARM chips.

Goodbye from Justin.tv

Justin.tv was created by Justin Kan, Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel and Kyle Vogt in March 2007.

Twitch today announced that the Justin.tv website, mobile apps, and APIs are no longer in service. A very simple explanation is given for the shutdown: since rebranding the company to Twitch Interactive in February 2014, all resources are now focused on Twitch.tv.

The news today will almost certainly further fuel the rumors that Google is acquiring, or has already acquired, Twitch. Purchases are often followed by consolidation, as well as cutting off any excess limbs.

Report: Sprint abandons bid for T-Mobile because US would block merger | Ars Technica

Sprint owner SoftBank has been talking about buying T-Mobile US for months, but is reportedly abandoning the plan because US regulators would likely object.

AT&T tried to buy T-Mobile in 2011 but gave up in the face of opposition from the Justice Department and Federal Communications Commission. While AT&T had to pay a $4-billion breakup fee, which helped T-Mobile build out its LTE network, Sprint apparently wouldn’t suffer that fate because no deal was ever finalized.

  • Apple’s fixes are clearly still a work in progress, and not all of my security concerns have been addressed yet

  • Given that a number of my threat models involved government spying, it feels good to know that Apple has taken my research seriously enough to address these concerns. Keep in mind, the threat model we’re dealing with also includes foreign governments, many of which have long histories of spying on our country’s diplomats.

  • Apple would be wise to add additional protections to ensure that sensitive data is protected in cases involving data at rest and physical security. This, too, is achievable with a small amount of effort, and will ensure that Apple is the only entity capable of extracting sensitive, encrypted data from the device. To do this, Apple’s file_relay service, which they claim is for “diagnostics purposes” would need to be closed off, or at least fixed so that it doesn’t bypass the user’s backup password and the encryption it is tied to. Additionally, the house_arrest service would need to be patched so that it doesn’t allow sandbox access while the device is locked, or some other creative approach.

Crashed drone carried contraband aimed at South Carolina prison | Reuters

A drone being flown in a novel attempt to smuggle phones, marijuana and tobacco into a South Carolina maximum security prison crashed outside its walls, authorities said on Wednesday.

Officials believe it was the first time an unmanned aircraft had been used in an effort to breach prison walls in the state, Givens said. Most cellphones are thrown over walls.

Authorities have arrested one man in the drone incident and are seeking another suspect. Brenton Lee Doyle, 28, appeared in court on Wednesday for a hearing. He faces charges of attempting to introduce contraband into a prison and possession of the drug flunitrazopam, a muscle relaxant known as “roofies.”

Doyle has said he has never seen a drone and that police said nothing about a drone at the time of his arrest, his attorney Wayne Floyd said.

Police Say A Google Tip About Child Abuse Led To Arrest – Business Insider

A Houston man has been arrested after Google sent a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children saying the man had explicit images of a child in his email, according to Houston police.

The man was a registered sex offender, convicted of sexually assaulting a child in 1994, reports Tim Wetzel at KHOU Channel 11 News in Houston.

“He was keeping it inside of his email. I can’t see that information, I can’t see that photo, but Google can,” Detective David Nettles of the Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce told Channel 11.

After Google reportedly tipped off the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the center alerted police, who used the information to get a warrant.

On one hand, most people would certainly applaud the use of technology to scan email in a case like this.

On the other, debate rages about how much privacy users can expect when using Google’s services like email. In a word: none.

A year ago, in a court brief, Google said as much. Then, in April, after a class-action case against Google for email scanning fell apart, Google updated its terms of service to warn people that it was automatically analyzing emails.

Google Said to Plan Separating Photo Service From Google+ – Bloomberg

The move would enable the photo service to stand more
independently and be accessible for consumers who aren’t part of
Google+, potentially spurring more growth, said the people, who
asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The
service, called Google+ Photos, would still work with the social
network’s users and may be rebranded as part of the move, one of
the people said.

Fred Wilson is a New York City-based venture capitalist since 1986, and a blogger. Wilson is the co-founder of Union Square Ventures, with investments in companies such as Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare, Zynga, Kickstarter, and others.

It seems like every week I read another article about a mobile carrier offering some incredible deal to eat the mobile data costs you rack up using certain apps.

The most recent was the news that Sprint will sell at data plan that “only connects to Facebook and Twitter”.

The pernicious thing about zero rating is that it is marketed as a consumer friendly offering by the mobile carrier — “we are not charging you for data when you are on Spotify”.

But what all of this zero rating activity is setting up is a mobile internet that looks a lot more like cable TV than our wide open Internet. Soon a startup will have to negotiate a zero rating plan before launching because mobile app customers will be trained to only use apps that are zero rated on their network.

I strongly encourage policy makers, policy wonks, internet activists, and anyone who cares about protecting an open internet for all to take a hard look at zero rating. Like all the best scourges, it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Sprint Will Sell a $12 Wireless Plan that Only Connects to Facebook or Twitter – Digits – WSJ

For about $12, will soon let subscribers buy a wireless plan that only connects to Facebook.

For that same price, they could choose instead to connect only with Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest—or for $10 more, enjoy unlimited use of all four. Another $5 gets them unlimited streaming of a music app of their choice.

The plan, offered under the company’s Virgin Mobile brand of prepaid service, comes as wireless carriers are experimenting with ways to make wireless Internet access more affordable for the poorest consumers by offering special deals on slices of the Web.

In the process, however, they are testing the long-held principle that all Internet traffic should be treated equally by creating strong incentives for subscribers to use already dominant services.

In June, T-Mobile US Inc. said it would allow customers unlimited use of mobile streaming music that doesn’t count against their data plans when they use services like Pandora and Spotify. Earlier this year, AT&T Inc. created a program allowing companies to foot the bill for data used by their customers on mobile apps.

Sprint said the plan—called Virgin Mobile Custom—was aimed at giving consumers more choices.

The new plan is only available at Wal-Mart and the base offering covers just 20 minutes of talk time and 20 texts. Subscribers can customize the plan by buying up to unlimited talk or text or both, and by choosing among data packages.

Ubuntu for Phones to Integrate Nokia HERE Maps

“HERE will provide a hybrid solution integrating an A-GPS and WiFi positioning system. Although Ubuntu already features GPS-based location, GPS on its own is not sufficient to support the location services that run on the OS with a rapid and efficient location positioning capability. This fully integrated solution will also be available to the many thousands of application developers currently using Ubuntu OS on their own hardware.”

Hangouts Now Works Without Google+ Account

Until now, you had to have a Google+ account to use Hangouts if you were a Google Apps user. Starting today, that requirement is gone. Anybody with a Google Apps account will now be able to start or join a meeting from their desktop or their dedicated Chromebox for Meetings device. For now, however, the requirement is still in place on mobile, but Google says that’s going away soon, too.

The only other restriction for those who want to use Hangouts without a Google+ account is that they won’t be able to use Hangout apps other than Screenshare or Chat and that they won’t be able to use Hangouts on Air to broadcast their chats to a larger audience.

BitTorrent’s new Bleep chat client doesn’t rely on any central servers to find and manage contacts. Instead, the company is using Distributed Hash Tables, also known as DHT, which are basically decentralized sets of data that can be queried by any connected client.

The company touts the absence of a central server or directory as a safeguard against government wiretapping and other kind of snooping, and it also promises better security for the actual messages. Bittorrent’s Senior Director of Product Development Farid Fadaie explained it this way on the company’s engineering blog:

“We are using secure encryption protocols such as curve25519, ed25519 , salsa20, poly1305, and others. Links between nodes are encrypted. All communication is end to end encrypted. This should be the new normal in the post-Snowden era.”

BitTorrent starts testing Bleep, its new P2P messaging platform

BitTorrent is slowly starting to take the wraps off its upcoming P2P chat initiative: The company started an invite-only pre-alpha test of a new Windows chat client dubbed “Bleep” on Wednesday, and it also revealed that it plans to make the underlying peer-to-peer technology available to other chat apps and messaging service providers as well.

Popcorn Time Adds Apple TV Support, iOS App Coming Soon | TorrentFreak

Today one of the most popular Popcorn Time forks releases a highly anticipated feature. The developers inform TorrentFreak that the latest version now has Airplay support, making it possible to stream movies directly to Apple TVs and other supported devices.

Ironically, Airplay support is currently limited to the Windows release, but a Mac version is due early next week and the Linux release will follow shortly after.

UPDATE 3-Sprint agrees to pay about $40/shr to buy T-Mobile -source | Reuters

Sprint Corp has agreed to pay about $40 per share to buy T-Mobile US Inc, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday, signalling progress in a long-contemplated deal to merge the third- and fourth-largest U.S. wireless carriers.

At that price, about a 17 percent premium to the carrier\’s Wednesday close, T-Mobile would be worth more than $32 billion.

Deutsche Telekom owns 67 percent of T-Mobile and is expected to keep a 15 to 20 percent stake of the combined company as part of the deal, the source said on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

Intel aims to eliminate all PC cables in 2016 – CNET

On stage at the Computex, Intel\’s Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, demonstrated wireless display, docking and charging features that will close the loop on the final few mandatory cables in the typical PC environment.

The high-speed WiGig standard will be used as the short range \”docking\” technology, instantly creating a connection to a screen and peripherals when a device is moved within range and then swapping back out to standalone usage by just picking up and walking away. WiGig delivers speeds of up to 7Gbps.

For power, Skaugen demonstrated Rezence, the magnetic resonance charging technology, promoted by the Alliance 4 Wireless Power (A4WP), that Intel is aligned with. The system can be installed under a table surface, with magnetic resonance capable of charging through 2 inches of wood.
