The Senate Fails to Reform NSA Spying, Votes Against USA Freedom Act

A last-minute bid to reform NSA spying before lawmakers break for a week-long recess failed early Saturday morning after hours of debate and filibuster overnight when Senate lawmakers voted 57-42 against the USA Freedom Act.

Senator Mitch McConnell then tried to lead an effort to extend the key provision in the Patriot Act that has been used to justify NSA spying, which is set to expire on June 1. But that vote also failed. Temporarily, that means the government’s bulk collection of phone records from U.S. telecoms is on hold.

USA Freedom Act aimed to put an end to that program, first uncovered by USA Today in 2006 and re-exposed in 2013 by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The bill called for records to be retained by telecoms and would have forced the NSA to obtain court orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to gain access to them. It also would have required the agency to use specific search terms to narrow its access to only relevant records.

A companion bill passed in the House earlier this month by a landslide vote of 338 to 88 but encountered trouble in the Senate where opponents said it would handicap the fight against terrorism and harm national security.

Proponents of the bill were pushing to get it passed before lawmakers could vote on whether or not to re-authorize sections of the US Patriot Act. Section 215, which the government has long said legally justifies its collection of phone records, is set to expire at midnight June 1.

Unlike many privacy and civil liberties groups, the ACLU has refrained from endorsing the USA Freedom Act and instead is advocating for allowing the Patriot Act provisions to sunset — i.e., to die a long overdue death rather than being “reformed.” Meanwhile, almost all of the 86 “no” votes in the House were based on the argument that the USA Freedom Act either does not go far enough in limiting the NSA or that it actually makes things worse.

Defeat in Senate

The USA Freedom Act was rejected by the U.S. Senate on May 22, 2015. By a vote of 57-42, the Senate did not pass the bill that would have required 60 votes to move forward, which means that the NSA must start winding down its domestic mass surveillance program this week. The Senate also rejected, by 54-45, also short of the necessary 60 votes, a two-month extension for the key provision in the Patriot Act that has been used to justify NSA spying, which is set to expire on June 1, 2015.

He believes that the order to withdraw was a betrayal. The Iraqi government has said it launched an investigation to find out what went wrong and how the order was issued, but so far, no one has given a viable explanation.

Ramadi Fell to ISIS Fighters Even Though They Were ‘Vastly Outnumbered’ by Iraqi

The city of Ramadi is controlled by “hundreds” of ISIS fighters who were able to seize the city after Iraqi military commanders ordered the withdrawal of several thousand Iraqi troops from the city.

That’s according to a U.S. official who also confirmed that the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Ramadi may have been prompted by the unexplained pullout of the elite Iraqi counterterrorism force based in the city.

The pullout of the Iraqi counterterrorism unit from Ramadi first appeared in the Kurdish news agency Rudaw.

Ramadi occupies a highly strategic location on the Euphrates and the road west into Syria and Jordan. This has made it a hub for trade and traffic, from which the city gained significant prosperity. Its position has meant that it has been fought over several times, during the two World Wars and again during the Iraq War and Iraqi insurgency. It was heavily damaged during the Iraq War, when it was a major focus for the insurgency against occupying United States forces. Following the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq in 2011, the city was contested by the Iraqi government and the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and fell to ISIL in May 2015.

Wikileaks reveal massive haul of 1978 Documents

Today WikiLeaks has released more than half a million US State Department cables from 1978. The cables cover US interactions with, and observations of, every country.

1978 was an unusually important year in geopolitics. The year saw the start of a great many political conflicts and alliances which continue to define the present world order, as well as the rise of still-important personalities and political dynasties.

The cables document the start of the Iranian Revolution, leading to the stand-off between Iran and the West (1979 — present); the Second Oil Crisis; the Afghan conflict (1978 — present); the Lebanon–Israel conflict (1978 — present); the Camp David Accords; the Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua and the subsequent conflict with US proxies (1978 — 1990); the 1978 Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia; the Ethopian invasion of Eritrea; Carter’s critical decision on the neutron bomb; the break-up of the USSR’s nuclear-powered satellite over Canada, which changed space policy; the US “playing the China card” against Russia; Brzezinski’s visit to China, which led to the subsequent normalisation of relations and a proxy war in Cambodia; with the US, UK, China and Cambodia on one side and Vietnam and the USSR on the other.

Through 1978, Zbigniew “Zbig” Brzezinski was US National Security Advisor. He would become the architect of the destabilisation of Soviet backed Afghanistan through the use of Islamic militants, elements of which would later become known as al-Qaeda. Brzezinski continues to affect US policy as an advisor to Obama. He has been especially visible in the recent conflict between Russia and the Ukraine.

WikiLeaks’ Carter Cables II comprise 500,577 US diplomatic cables and other diplomatic communications from and to US embassies and missions in nearly every country. It follows on from the Carter Cables (368,174 documents from 1977), which WikiLeaks published in April 2014.

The Carter Cables II bring WikiLeaks total published US diplomatic cable collection to 2.7 million documents.

Borked Belkin routers leave many unable to get online | Ars Technica

Owners of Belkin routers around the world are finding themselves unable to get online today. Outages appear to be affecting many different models of Belkin router, and they’re hitting customers on any ISP, with Time Warner Cable and Comcast among those affected. ISPs, inundated with support calls by unhappy users, are directing complaints to Belkin’s support line, which appears to have gone into meltdown in response.

The reason for the massive outages is currently unknown. Initial speculation was that Belkin pushed a buggy firmware update overnight, but on a reddit thread about the problem, even users who claim to have disabled automatic updates have found their Internet connectivity disrupted.

Update: Belkin has given us the following statement:

Starting approximately midnight on October 7, Belkin began experiencing an issue with a service configured in certain Belkin router models that causes a failure when it checks for general network connectivity by pinging a site hosted by Belkin.

If your service has not yet been restored, please unplug your router and plug it back in after waiting 1 minute. Wait 5 more minutes and the router should reconnect. If you have any further issues, please contact our support at (800) 223-5546.

Facebook Readies App Allowing Anonymity – NYTimes.com

The company is working on a stand-alone mobile application that allows users to interact inside of it without having to use their real names, according to two people briefed on Facebook’s plans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the project.

The point, according to these people, is to allow Facebook users to use multiple pseudonyms to openly discuss the different things they talk about on the Internet; topics of discussion which they may not be comfortable connecting to their real names.

There are many unknowns as to how the new app will interact, if at all, with Facebook’s main site. It is unclear if the app will allow anonymous photo sharing, or how friend interactions and existing friend connections will work.

Adobe confirmed its Digital Editions software insecurely phones home your ebook reading history to Adobe — to thwart piracy.

And the company insisted the secret snooping is covered in its terms and conditions.

Version 4 of the application makes a note of every page read, and when, in the digital tomes it accesses, and then sends that data over the internet unencrypted to Adobe.

Adobe explained that the data it collects is for digital rights management (DRM) mechanisms that may be demanded by publishers to combat piracy, and gave a detailed list of what and why it needs such specific information:

User ID: The user ID is collected to authenticate the user.
Device ID: The device ID is collected for digital right management (DRM) purposes since publishers typically restrict the number of devices an eBook or digital publication can be read on.
Certified app ID: The Certified App ID is collected as part of the DRM workflow to ensure that only certified apps can render a book, reducing DRM hacks and compromised DRM implementations.
Device IP: The device IP is collected to determine the broad geo-location, since publishers have different pricing models in place depending on the location of the reader purchasing a given eBook or digital publication.
Duration for which the book was read: This information is collected to facilitate limited or metered pricing models where publishers or distributors charge readers based on the duration a book is read. For example, a reader may borrow a book for a period of 30 days. While some publishers/distributers charge for 30-days from the date of the download, others follow a metered pricing model and charge for the actual time the book is read.
Percentage of the book read: This information is collected to allow publishers to implement subscription models where they can charge based on the percentage of the book read. For example, some publishers charge only a percentage of the full price if only a certain percentage of the book is read.

Additionally, the following data is provided by the publisher as part of the actual license and DRM for the ebook:

Date of purchase or download
Distributor ID and Adobe content server operator URL
Metadata of the book provided by publisher (including title, author, publisher list price, ISBN number)

Complain About Comcast, Get Fired From Your Job – Slashdot

When you complain to your cable company, you certainly don’t expect that the cable company will then contact your employer and discuss your complaint. But that’s exactly what happened to one former Comcast customer who says he was fired after the cable company called a partner at his accounting firm. Be careful next time when you exercise your first amendment rights.

At some point shortly after that call, someone from Comcast contacted a partner at the firm to discuss Conal. This led to an ethics investigation and Conal’s subsequent dismissal from his job; a job where he says he’d only received positive feedback and reviews for his work.

Comcast maintained that Conal used the name of his employer in an attempt to get leverage. Conal insists that he never mentioned his employer by name, but believes that someone in the Comcast Controller’s office looked him up online and figured out where he worked.
When he was fired, Conal’s employer explained that the reason for the dismissal was an e-mail from Comcast that summarized conversations between Conal and Comcast employees.

But Conal has never seen this e-mail in order to say whether it’s accurate and Comcast has thus far refused to release any tapes of the phone calls related to this matter._

China Investigates Microsoft – WSJ

Two people familiar with the inquiry said Chinese corporate regulatory officials made surprise visits to Microsoft’s offices in four Chinese cities.

According to Reuters and the South China Morning Post, the company is being investigated by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, which raided Microsoft offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu on Monday.

China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce acts as the nation’s corporate registry and has some marketing and antitrust responsibilities. It couldn’t be reached for comment late Monday.

AIC officials sometimes pay visits to industries under official scrutiny that don’t result in formal probes.

Microsoft had been in the Chinese government’s cross hairs before this week. China’s powerful state-run television broadcaster ran a report in June that questioned the security of the company’s new Windows 8 computer operating system.

The broadcast quoted Chinese experts who argued that Microsoft cooperated with the U.S. government to carry out cyberspying.

Other U.S. companies have also been under scrutiny in the country. China’s state broadcaster also raised questions about the security of the iPhone in July, allegations that Apple Inc.

Leaked discussion paper reveals Australian online piracy crackdown in full swing

The federal government is proposing that internet service providers (ISPs), such as Telstra, Optus and iiNet, take measures to discourage or reduce online copyright infringement, according to a leaked copy of its discussion paper.

According to the document, first obtained by news website Crikey, the government also wants to give itself the power to prescribe specific measures that would see internet providers discourage online copyright infringement. This is in the cases where the industry does not develop effective schemes or commercial arrangements.

It is also proposing that universities be “captured” by the safe harbour scheme that currently governs internet service providers. This stipulates financial damages can be levied against carriage service providers who breach four categories, including providing connections to copyright material and referring users to an online location where it exists via a link.

In the document, signed by Attorney-General George Brandis and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the government cited its unratified trade obligations with the US – known as the** “Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement”** – to pursue its reforms.

It essentially overrules a decision by the High Court in 2012, which found that internet service providers could not be found liable for authorising an act by a subscriber that infringes copyright.

Although the discussion paper hasn’t been released yet, a speedy response from industry and the public is expected, with submissions closing on August 25.

Aussie hackers get Doom working on an ATM- The Inquirer

HACKERS IN AUSTRALIA have succeeded in running classic first person shooter game Doom on a bank cash machine.

The ATM, which runs Windows XP Embedded, can be controlled using the device’s buttons, with the game appearing on the screen in place of the message telling you the size of your overdraft.

At the moment, weapons selection is done through the arrow buttons to the side of the screen, and the group already has plans to get the number keys up and running.

Close Encounters Of The Radio Kind? Mystery Bursts Baffle Astronomers : NPR

Back in 2007, astronomers detected an incredibly brief, incredibly strong radio wave burst in Australia. And now, on the opposite side of the world, astronomers have detected a second blast of similar proportions. Meaning that A) the first one wasn’t a fluke, and B) we have absolutely no idea what’s causing them.

This second ultrafast flash of radio waves was discovered by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico, which had been putting out its feelers in hopes of discovering neutron stars. Instead, it got the second instance of so-called fast radio bursts (FRBs), which finally allowed astronomers to rule out cosmic noise and formally report them. Because unlike the radio signals we usually detect, these radio waves “show every sign of having come from far outside our galaxy.”

World of Spycraft: NSA and CIA Spied in Online Games

Online games might seem innocuous, a top-secret 2008 NSA document warned, but they had the potential to be a “target-rich communication network” allowing intelligence suspects “a way to hide in plain sight.” Virtual games “are an opportunity!,” another 2008 NSA document declared.

But for all their enthusiasm — so many CIA, FBI and Pentagon spies were hunting around in Second Life, the document noted, that a “deconfliction” group was needed to avoid collisions — the intelligence agencies may have inflated the threat.

The documents do not cite any counterterrorism successes from the effort, and former American intelligence officials, current and former gaming company employees and outside experts said in interviews that they knew of little evidence that terrorist groups viewed the games as havens to communicate and plot operations.

During Smith’s 6 years on Eve, he used the game to communicate covert messages with the US State Department. Being the perfect cover, online games like Eve provide a pathway of communication between the US government and overseas operatives on nearly secured channels because of the cryptic messages being passed back and forth.

The friend recalls that Smith was on Eve the night of the attack and conveyed that sirens could be heard in the distance, and suddenly would go offline, then pop back up. The agency’s internal presentation slides, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, show that when companies follow consumers on the Internet to better serve them advertising, the technique opens the door for similar tracking by the government. The slides also suggest that the agency is using these tracking techniques to help identify targets for offensive hacking operations.

According to the documents, the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ, are using the small tracking files or “cookies” that advertising networks place on computers to identify people browsing the Internet. The intelligence agencies have found particular use for a part of a Google-specific tracking mechanism known as the “PREF” cookie. These cookies typically don’t contain personal information, such as someone’s name or e-mail address, but they do contain numeric codes that enable Web sites to uniquely identify a person’s browser.

Snowden showed that “the balance in many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual.”

The 10-mile delivery radius for the drones shown in the Amazon video seems quite literally a stretch, according to Colin Guinn CEO of DJI Innovations, a Texas based company that makes unmanned aerial cinematography systems for commercial and recreational use.

“The [Amazon] video is by far the most fleshed out proof of concept yet,” Guinn said. “But with the system they showed, a 20-mile round trip on a single charge isn’t possible with today’s technology.”

He said that the system Amazon presented would carry a five-pound payload for a maximum flight time of about 15 to 20 minutes. “That would amount to maybe about a five-mile delivery radius,” he said, adding that a 10-mile radius might be possible in about a year from now.

The NSA does not target Americans’ location data by design, but the agency acquires a substantial amount of information on the whereabouts of domestic cellphones “incidentally,” a legal term that connotes a foreseeable but not deliberate result.

One senior collection manager, speaking on condition of anonymity but with permission from the NSA, said “we are getting vast volumes” of location data from around the world by tapping into the cables that connect mobile networks globally and that serve U.S. cellphones as well as foreign ones. Additionally, data are often collected from the tens of millions of Americans who travel abroad with their cellphones every year.

In one curious exchange, the committee chair, Keith Vaz, asked Rusbridger if he loved his country.

“I’m slightly surprised to be asked the question,” replied Rusbridger. "But, yes, we are patriots and one of the things we are patriotic about is the nature of democracy, the nature of a free press and the fact that one can in this country discuss and report these things.

Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Mike Rogers appeared together on CNN’s State of the Union, on the day that al-Qaida’s US spokesperson called for attacks on US interests around the world. Rogers said al-Qaida groups had changed their means of communication as a result of leaks about US surveillance programs, making it harder to detect potential plots in the early planning stages.

“We’re fighting amongst ourselves here in this country about the role of our intelligence community that it is having an impact on our ability to stop what is a growing number of threats,” he said. “And so we’ve got to shake ourselves out of this pretty soon and understand that our intelligence services are not the bad guys.”

Feinstein, a California Democrat, said there were more terrorist groups than ever, with more sophisticated and hard-to-detect bombs. She said: “There is huge malevolence out there.”

Biden asks Ecuador to reject Snowden’s asylum request

Vice President Biden has asked Ecuador to turn down an asylum request from National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, the country’s president said Saturday.

Rafael Correa said he had a “friendly and very cordial” conversation with Biden, and told the vice president that Ecuador hadn’t sought to be put in the situation of deciding whether to harbor an American fugitive. Correa said Ecuador can’t consider the asylum request until Snowden is on Ecuadorean soil.

Older form of user authentication used by some facebook apps returned a token that could be used for both read and write access to a users account
- Access to personal information
- Write wall posts and private messages
- Send invites and RSVPs
- Access photographs and other objects
These tokens can be leaked via the referrer field or given to advertisers and other third parties who you did not authorize, when the tokens should only be able to be used by the application you did authorize
The flaw was fixed when facebook switched to the standardized OAUTH API that works differently and requires public and private keys, but the old API is still supported to avoid breaking existing apps
Facebook is phasing out the old method, by September 1st all apps must use OAUTH 2.0 and by October 1st all apps must have an SSL Certificate.

War Story: When it goes wrong, it goes very wrong

Background: We were co-located with the local cable company, they had been offering data center services for years and were rapidly expanding and becoming a major force in the area. We particularly liked the data center because it was a block from my house in the event of a problem. However, after a few years there, the local cable company was bought out by a major national cable system. This new company decided that data center services were outside of their business focus and requested that all customers find a new home.
So we signed a contract with a new data center and arranged with our customers to physically move half of our equipment over two consecutive weekends. In preparation for this we shifted load away from the gear we were going to move and adjusted our router configuration, leaving the redundant router as the primary at the old location. However, to save reconfiguration time during the final phase of the move, the new configuration on the backup router was only the ‘running’ config, not the ‘boot’ config. The boot config was setup so that when the router was physically moved next weekend, it would be read to go online immediately.
Things were all going according to plan until about an hour before we were scheduled to being our move. A massive power event knocked out utility power to about a 40 block radius that included the data center. This was obviously nothing to be concerned about, this was a real data center, with redundant battery backups and a generator system.
The servers kicked over to the battery backup, and things went well for the first few minutes. Once the system decided that the utility power was not going to be restored quickly, it spooled up the generator, which came online cleaning and started generating power. Once the generator was online, the system attempted to switch to generator power, however this failed, so the system resumed off of battery power, and sent out an alarm to the data center staff. The system attempted the transfer again, but again power was not getting from the generator to the battery backup system.
Eventually, after about 15 minutes, the batteries ran flat and the entire data center went dark. The catastrophic loss of power also took out my home Internet connection from the same provider. Now, all of my servers were down, but I was unaware of the issue because my own Internet connection was down as well. I quickly became aware of the situation when my offsite monitoring starting pinging my phone.
I called the ISP/Data Center and they said they had suffered a power loss, this explained why my home internet was down, but surely the data center should be fully functional. It wasn’t.
Once utility power was restored after a total of about 30 minutes, things started to come back online, however because our routers and servers had modified ‘boot’ configs in preparation for the move that was going to happen later that day, things did not come back online cleanly. We rushed to the data center and started reconfiguring the gear that was to remain in the old data center for another week.
Root Cause Analysis:
- Due to lack of maintenance by the new management of the data center, the transfer cables between the generators and the battery banks had corroded and failed to transfer power
- Due to the closing of the business unit, the data center was understaffed to deal with the catastrophic event
Lessons Learned:
- Don’t change your boot config until the last possible minute. The idea was to save time at the far end during the move, but it ended up costing us when the power prematurely changed our configuration
