DuckDuckGo Blog : Our 2016 Open Source Donations

Thank you all for the nominations for our 2016 open source donations program. As usual, there was a wide variety of projects that could benefit from additional funding and fit the theme of raising the standard of trust online. We try to make this a joint effort with the commuity and you didn’t disappoint! Hear Gabriel, the founder of DuckDuckGo, announce this year’s recipients

Ubuntu 16.10 Isn’t Going To Use Mir / Unity 8 By Default – Phoronix

Similar to the current situation with existing Ubuntu releases, Unity 8 and Mir will be available as an opt-in feature for users wanting to upgrade their desktop, but Unity 7 and the faithful X.Org Server is planned to be the default for Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak.

Plasma Mobile : New base system… Ubuntu Touch?

Our initial Ubuntu Touch base was Ubuntu 15.04. Eventually, our image started to diverge from the Ubuntu Touch base. For example, we upgraded _libhybris to upstream version_because libhybris available in Ubuntu archive diverged too much from upstream to be useful in our context. We also had to upgrade to a newer Qt version, and we also needed to upgrade the base system to Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) because we did not have the resources for managing different branches for packaging the latest git KF5/Plasma for 15.04.

OpenWRT Gets Forked By Some Of Its Own Developers As LEDE Project – Phoronix

LEDE will continue to focus upon being “a great embedded Linux distribution” with predictable release cycles and transparent decision making. Among the stated reasons for this “reboot of the OpenWRT community” is that the active core developer count was low, unreliable infrastructure, lack of communication and coordination around the project, not enough people with commit access, and lack of focus on stability and documentation.

Your power management system?

I am starting to play with the power management of my computers running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (might downgrade but sticking with it for now) and I wanted to know what everyone’s choice for Power Management is, I am looking at powertop but I don’t know how well it will work.

Subsonic (music streaming software) is no longer open source, starting with 6.0 release

Sorry, no. Starting with 6.0, Subsonic is no longer open-source (the source code for older versions is still available).

The main reason for this change is that the source contains some software license codes I have purchased and that shouldn’t be used by forked projects.

Microsoft to show Bash on Linux running on Windows 10

However, given the latest session leak, it seems that Bash on Ubuntu will figure in somehow. Bash is a Linux shell. It’s a set of add-ons and plug-ins that are a superset of the Bourne shell, and provide users with the ability to employ text commands to evoke specific actions (and/or to use scripts to do so).

Fedora 24 Alpha released! – No Mainstream Wayland Distro in 2016?

We have decided not to make Wayland, the next generation graphic stack, the default in Fedora 24 Workstation. However, Wayland remains available as an option, and the Workstation team would greatly appreciate your help in testing. Our goal is one full release where the non-default Wayland option works seamlessly, or reasonably close thereto. At that point we will make Wayland the default with X11 as the fallback option.

Arch Linux – News: Required update to pacman-5.0.1 before 2016-04-23

In order for the use of hooks to be started, we require all users to have updated to at least pacman-5.0.1 before 2016-04-23. Pacman-5.0.1 was released on 2016-02-23, so this will have given everyone two months to update their system.

Stali distribution smashes assumptions about Linux

Stali’s project head, Anselm R. Garbe (a developer currently working at BMW, and creator of the DWM window manager), believes static linking works out better for most common use cases. The most obvious benefit is that static binaries have a smaller memory and on-disk footprint. Static binaries also claim to be faster, although there are no benchmarks as yet to show how Stali performs against other distributions.

CoreOS says over 80 percent of Docker images stored in its Quay service are still vulnerable to the infamous Heartbleed bug, for example.

Clair can scan containers for known vulnerabilities and then alert developers of potential issues. CoreOS is getting this data from the vulnerability databases of Red Hat, Ubuntu and Debian.

SteamOS Getting off to a rocky start…

SteamOS gaming performs significantly worse than Windows, Ars analysis shows

Cross-platform 3D games face 21- to 58-percent frame rate dip on same hardware.

Why one PC maker decided not to ship a Steam Machine this year

Watch out for the old school shill: Dean Takahashi has authored very Microsoft focused books, and writes a lot about MS, such as – Opening the Xbox: Inside Microsoft’s Plan to Unleash an Entertainment Revolution

“We met with Valve about our reservations concerning the limitations of SteamOS with high-end PC builds, and they agreed they were not issues that could be overcome in time for us to launch a Steam Machine this year,” said Kelt Reeves, president of Falcon Northwest in Medford, Oregon. “But they were genuinely interested in working to address them in future SteamOS builds. So the option for us to produce a Steam Machine is still open, and our Tiki PCs have been in production for years as Windows systems and are always ready. But for now, we’ve put our plans to offer a Steam Machine on hold.”

Why OpenStreetMap is the Most Important thing in Geo

The OpenStreetMap community is maturing and the industry surrounding it is expanding. We have only seen the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the potential of OpenStreetMap and what it can do. I look forward to being apart of what’s next.

Wheelmap.org is an online map to search, find and mark wheelchair-accessible places. Get involved by marking public places like bars, restaurants, cinemas or supermarkets!

MAPS.ME – Offline OpenStreetMap maps for iOS/Android/Mac/Linux/Windows

Inspired by OSMTracker for Windows Mobile, allows you to track your journeys, mark waypoints with tags, voice record, and photos.

GPS traces can then be exported in GPX format for later use with OpenStreetMap tools like JOSM, or uploaded directly to OpenStreetMap.

Tracks can be displayed over an OpenStreetMap background or with no background if you don’t have a data plan.

MAPS.ME is beautifully designed, and the maps do load very quickly. It would be a good resource to have in your pocket.

We’re excited to announce Mapzen Search, our new search engine for places that takes our philosophy of open communities creating data and code to its heart. Mapzen Search will launch in the next week, and in the meantime, we wanted to share some background on why the time is right for a new, open search engine for places.

LastPass Killers

It’s Yahoo Mail‘s 18th birthday this month and to mark the occasion, Yahoo is pulling out all the stops with three major announcements: a brand new mobile app for Android and iOS, the support for multiple third-party email accounts and, perhaps most significantly, the introduction of a completely password-free sign-in experience called Yahoo Account Key.

LastPass Joins the LogMeIn Family

It’s a big day here at LastPass. We’re thrilled to announce that we’re joining LogMeIn. As one of the world’s leading SaaS companies, we can’t imagine a better team to align with our values and product-driven mission. With their experience in growing successful brands like join.me, we’re excited to join LogMeIn in delivering the next generation of identity and access management for individuals, teams and companies, with LastPass at the forefront.

KeePass

KeePassC is a password manager fully compatible to KeePass v.1.x and KeePassX. That is, your
password database is fully encrypted with AES.

KeePassC is written in Python 3 and comes with a curses-interface. It is completely controlled
with the keyboard (vim-like keys are supported).

Some features are:

  • AES encryption of the database with password and/or keyfile
  • Included customizable password generator
  • KeePassX and KeePass v.1.x compatible (KeePass v2.x planned)
  • Database entries are sorted in alphabetically sorted groups
  • Subgroups of groups
  • Entries are identified by a title
  • Search entries by this title and show matches in an own group
  • Set expiration dates to remind you that a new password is needed
  • Unicode support
  • Copy username and password to clipboard
  • Auto-locking workspace and self-deleting clipboard with adjustable delays
  • Options to remember last database and last keyfile
  • Open URLs directly in your standard browser
  • Optional use of vim/ranger-like keys
  • Simple command line interface
  • Network functionality including multiuser support
  • The last can be used to omit password entering, too

  • kpcli – A command line interface for KeePass

A command line interface (interactive shell) to work with KeePass 1.x or 2.x database files. This program was inspired by my use of the CLI of the Ked Password Manager (“kedpm -c”) combined with my need to migrate to KeePass.

Pass

Pass Screenshot

Password management should be simple and follow Unix philosophy. With pass, each password lives inside of a gpg encrypted file whose filename is the title of the website or resource that requires the password. These encrypted files may be organized into meaningful folder hierarchies, copied from computer to computer, and, in general, manipulated using standard command line file management utilities.

pass makes managing these individual password files extremely easy. All passwords live in ~/.password-store, and pass provides some nice commands for adding, editing, generating, and retrieving passwords. It is a very short and simple shell script. It’s capable of temporarily putting passwords on your clipboard and tracking password changes using git.

How Active is Pass Development?

Pass commits Screenshot

To free password data from the clutches of other (bloated) password managers, various users have come up with different password store organizations that work best for them.

Using Git to Sync Pass

First install and then setup git

1 $ git config --global user.name "John Doe"
2 $ git config --global user.email "johndoe@foobar.com"
3 $ pass git init
QtPass GUI for pass, the standard UNIX password manager

QtPass Screenshot

  • Using pass or git and gpg2 directly
    • Cross platform: Linux, BSD, OS X and Windows
    • Reading pass password stores
    • Decrypting and displaying the password and related info
    • Editing and adding of passwords and information
    • Updating to and from a git repository
    • Per-folder user selection for multi recipient encryption
    • Configuration options for backends and executable/folder locations
    • Copying password to clipboard
    • Configurable shoulder surfing protection options
    • Experimental WebDAV support

Planned features

  • Re-encryption after users-change (optional ofcourse).
  • Plugins based on key, format is same as password file.
  • Colour coding folders (possibly disabling folders you can’t decrypt).
  • WebDAV (configuration) support.
  • Optional table view of decrypted folder contents.
  • Opening of (basic auth) urls in default browser? Possibly with helper plugin for filling out forms?
  • Some other form of remote storage that allows for accountability / auditing (web API to retreive the .gpg files)?

  • GPG – How to trust an imported key

Encryptr – Powered by Crypton

Encryptr is simple and easy to use. It stores your sensitive data like passwords, credit card data, PINs, or access codes, in the cloud. However, because it was built on the zero-knowledge Crypton framework, Encryptr ensures that only the user has the ability to access or read the confidential information. Not the app’s developers, cloud storage provider, or any third party.

Encryptr only ever encrypts or decrypts your data locally on your device. No plain text is ever sent to the server, not even your passphrase. This is what zero-knowledge means.*

You don’t even need to hand over any personal data to register. Not your name, and not your email address. The app only requires a username and a passphrase.

Encryptr is free, and completely open source. This includes Crypton.

Firefox Password Manager

If you use the same simple password for everything you will be more susceptible to identity theft. The Create secure passwords to keep your identity safe article shows you an easy method for creating secure passwords and using the Password Manager, as described above, will help you remember them all.

Even though the Password Manager stores your usernames and passwords on your hard drive in an encrypted format, someone with access to your computer can still see or use them. The Use a Master Password to protect stored logins and passwords article shows you how to prevent this and keep you protected in the event your computer is lost or stolen.

When paired with Firefox sync feature this effectively emulates LastPass without Yubikey support, and without the password generation feature.

Etch-a-sketch RUNS LINUX!

Over on YouTube user devnulling has uploaded a video showing his “Etch-A-SDR” project. This project involved creating an all-in-one SDR device out of an Odroid C1, Teensy 3.1 and an RTL-SDR dongle. The Odroid C1 is an embedded computer, similar to the Raspberry Pi 2 and the Teensy 3.1 is a microcontroller development board. The “Etch-A-SDR” is named as such because of its resemblance to an Etch-A-Sketch toy. It has two knobs that can be used for tuning and several side buttons for changing demodulation modes etc.

Upon boot the Etch-A-SDR opens GQRX and is ready for tuning within seconds of turning it on. In addition to using it as a portable SDR with GQRX the Etch-A-SDR can also be booted into normal Linux mode and into Etch-A-Sketch mode, where it operates as a normal Etch-A-Sketch toy.

The code can be downloaded from https://github.com/devnulling/etch-a-sdr.

Hangups

hangups is the first third-party instant messaging client for Google

. It includes both a Python library and a reference client with a

Unlike its predecessor Google Talk, Hangouts uses a proprietary,

this protocol, which allows it to support features like group messaging that
aren’t available in clients that connect via XMPP.

hangups is still in an early stage of development. The reference client is
usable for basic chatting, but the API is undocumented and subject to change.

Red Hat is buying Ansible for more than $100M

Buying Ansible — one of four major providers of at least partly open-source devops tools — makes sense, because it can add to Red Hat’s line of offerings. Plus, Ansible already integrates with Red Hat’s OpenShift, OpenStack, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux software.

As part of the deal, about50 Ansible employees will join Red Hat

Red Hat today also provided a brief update to its earnings as part of the news. It says the acquisition is expected to have no material impact to Red Hat’s revenue for the third and fourth quarters of its fiscal year. Non-GAAP operating expenses for fiscal 2016 will be increased by $2 million, or ($0.01) per share, in Q3 and $4.0 million, or ($0.02) per share, in Q4 as a result of the transaction.

The Alienware Steam Machine: finally, a gaming PC for the living room

I used to laugh when I saw Linux users scramble to build compatibility layers to play “real” PC games. I chuckled when Valve CEO Gabe Newell lambasted Windows 8 as a “catastrophe for everyone,” proffering Linux and SteamOS as a viable alternative. It seemed so far-fetched, so silly. Truth be told, I’m still laughing — but now it’s because I’m enjoying myself. The Alienware Steam Machine has some growing pains, but it’s fun. Lots of fun.

It’s all very smooth, overall, but there were a few sticking points that seemed a little rough compared to other game consoles. While the system hasn’t frozen on us during a game yet, there have been a handful of times where the whole OS hung when we were closing or opening a title, requiring a system reboot that took 30 to 60 seconds. We ran into occasional problems with webpage scrolling, the on-screen keyboard, and Wi-Fi recognition as well, all of which disappeared with a reboot.

We also found a few SteamOS games that still include an intermediate “launcher” screen that asks players to confirm resolution and other settings. That’s only an annoyance because these screens can’t be navigated with the Steam Controller; you need to plug in a mouse and keyboard to get through to the actual game in these cases. While the SteamOS interface includes large warnings that these games require extra hardware, and Valve isn’t directly responsible for third-party developers’ unfriendly decisions, it still seems like an oversight to have such games be unplayable out of the box.

Steam Machine Launch Date

November 10, 2015: May it forever be known as “Steam Day”—the day Valve will officially unleash its suite of Steam Machines, Steam Link, SteamOS, and the Steam Controller. Sure, it’s almost exactly a year later than anticipated, but…well, if you want one, this is when you can get one. Officially.

“Unofficially,” you can get a Steam Machine and Steam Controller as early as October 16, provided you’re in the market for Alienware’s model. Preordering through GameStop ensures you’ll receive Alienware’s Steam Machine (which Valve previously referred to as “a console that encapsulates the full potential of what a Steam Machine should be”) almost a month early.

HP Enterprise will be all-in

What’s the latest enterprise IT company to proclaim its love of open source? HP, that’s who – or, more specifically, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, one of two companies that will emerge once HP splits this November.

Speaking at the HP Discover conference in Las Vegas this week, CTO Martin Fink said open source will be central to how HP’s enterprise incarnation conducts its business.

“We have taken this very, very seriously and we are all-in on the notion of open source,” Fink said, adding that even game-changing big bets like the Machine will be backed by open source software.

“I want to stress something here: It is not called HP Grommet. It is called Grommet,” Fink said. “It is HP’s contribution to the IT industry to bring consumer-grade capabilities with an enterprise user experience framework so that all of you can take advantage of it.”

Dell Inspiron 14 Ubuntu Review

I ‘ve been using this new Ubuntu notebook from Dell for a couple days, and overall, I’m pretty happy. For a $299 computer (that’s list price, I got mine for $249), it has reasonably good specs, looks nice, and performs about like you would expect considering the hardware and price.

Chip to be $20 not $9

Allwinner confirmed R8 just SOC cost $4.80 but this makes not much sense either this is the price of A33 quad core SOC why they price so expensive obsolete A13 Cortex-A8 SOC???

On my question how then Next Thing Co. sell this computer for $9 Allwinner response is:

“CHIP 9$ computer launched a big advertising campaign to promote their new development board, their actual cost is higher than 9$. After the Kickstarter their computer will sell for 39$.”

So, sorry guys to break your dreams for 1Ghz SOCs costing $1, maybe in future this would be possible, but not now.

VNC

TeamViewer

  • Native on Linux and other platforms, has android app, free for personal use, but expensive for business.

Screen Connect

  • Perfect for large support companies, doesn’t really require user to install software. Owner is in control of branding, fraction of the cost of Bomgar

  • We call it clientless because no plugins or client software are required.

Shield: NVIDIA’s $200 gaming-focused Android TV set-top box

NVIDIA’s calling Shield the “world’s first 4K Android TV” — it’s able to both stream and locally run 4K content to your fawncy 4K television. How does it do that? It uses a bleeding edge X1 chip — the most powerful mobile processor NVIDIA’s made to date.

It’s going to push that 4K content via HDMI out back, and pull down streamed 4K content via Gigabit Ethernet. Need some extra storage? You might, as it’s only got 16GB of internal stores. Good news: It’s got a microSD expansion port and two USB 3.0 ports for an external HDD. You’ll need some extra storage with all those huge video files.

Valve announces streaming box and SteamVR for November – PC Gamer

Steam Machines from Alienware and Falcon Northwest are at GDC, with Steam Machines being released this November.

The new Pebble smartwatch is now the most-funded project in Kickstarter history – Quartz

In one week, Pebble’s new Time smartwatch has become the most “funded” project in Kickstarter history, approaching $14 million in pre-orders. The watch project generated more than $9 million in pre-orders on its first day alone, and has slowly been making its way up the chart all week.

What may have boosted it: Pebble announced today that it will also be producing a more expensive “Steel” version of the watch. Within a few hours, the Pebble Time broke the record, dethroning the Coolest Cooler, a cooler that has a built-in blender and speakers.

Google+ is about to be broken up – Mar. 2, 2015

The search giant’s tepidly embraced social network is going to reorganize around its two standout products — photos and hangouts — as well as a newly named social feed called “streams,” Google’s (GOOGL, Tech30) product chief Sundar Pichai said at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona,

Pichai didn’t give a timeline for when Google+ will be rebranded. A spokesman for Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bradley Horowitz Is Now Running Google+ | TechCrunch

Horowitz has confirmed our reporting in a carefully worded Google+ update that does not mention Hangouts, or even Google+ by name, but instead refers to Photos and Streams. This points to the idea of Google+ being split into dedicated services, two of which Horowitz will oversee:

“Just wanted to confirm that the rumors are true — I’m excited to be running Google’s Photos and Streams products! It’s important to me that these changes are properly understood to be positive improvements to both our products and how they reach users.”

Did Google+ fail? According to that message, perhaps,” one former Google+ employee told me recently. “But that’s not the relevant question: Is Google in a better position today to provide identity services across products? Yes.”

Telegram

Being good at going full Salesman on things comes with a certain responsibility if you care about your audience. Touting the security of Telegram should be avoided. By all means, use it if it fits your needs but please don’t portrait Telegram as something vetted and secure, that’s doing the audience a disservice.

Only half of the equation (the client) is open source and the protocol is full of weirdness and outright flaws. I believe their crypto contest charade was even featured and scoffed at on one of the network’s channels a while ago.

Its encryption score in the following table should be taken with a grain of salt since it’s vulnerable to ‘hostile server’ attacks, which are sadly just a subpoena away:

Red Hat CTO unexpectedly quits, amid rumors of executive ‘friction’

No-one among the rank and file at Red Hat seem to have seen this coming. In a move the Linux giant’s staffers said was “shocking” and a “punch in the gut,” long-time Red Hat chief technology officer Brian Stevens has resigned.

Sean Michael Kerner at eWeek says Red Hat CTO Resigns for New Opportunity – not friction.

I’ve heard from my own sources that Stevens is not leaving due to any internal wrangling or politics at Red Hat, but rather to pursue a new opportunity that he simply could not turn down.

Reasons for Red Hat CTO departure still a mystery

The only additional statement from Red Hat is a remark that Stevens was “leaving to pursue another opportunity.” While Stevens did not reply to inquires, sources stated that he’d been biding his time waiting for the right opportunity.

JOHN C. DVORAK: Linux Has Run Out of Time

Time has run out for there to be a must-have killer software package on Linux. Anyone writing such an application writes it for Mac or Windows, because that’s where the customers are. All the super applications for Linux are on the server side and that ends the discussion. Yes, this could change someday. But that someday is not on the horizon.

Right now Linux on the desktop remains a cheap curiosity, that is kind of fun to play with when you are bored.

Steam Streaming Revealed:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

How do you get it?

Requirements

  • A machine powerful enough on the “server” side to play the game, and encode it.
  • A machine on the client side powerful enough to decode whatever the resolution of video is it will be receiving (resolution is set to the servers screen size).
  • About 3MB/s sustained transfer. That might be trickier than you think over Wifi.

Game Streaming

  • Games installed on Windows box show up in my Library

  • Game install status is displayed on the Linux steam client while the Windows box is installing.

  • I was able to stream Dust from Linux to my Windows box.

  • When the game you are streaming is running for the first time on the host Windows box, and the DirectX reds is getting installed, Steam will inform you that the remote system is running first time setups on the remote box.

  • UAC will break this process at this time.

  • Steam In-Home Streaming Beta Demonstration

Non-Steam Application Streaming

In this latest instance, they’ve updated the Steam client beta’s in-home streaming functionality to support “streaming non-Steam games in the Steam library”. That means, whether they’re part of Steam or not, you’ll be able to beam your most powerful games between local area network PCs. Even Minesweeper.

  • You might lose title bars.
  • If you’re tricky enough you can get to the full Windows desktop.
  • Everything is full screen. Loading boxes, new windows, etc.

Linux 3.13 is out bringing among other thing the first official release of nftables. nftables is the project that aims to replace the existing {ip,ip6,arp,eb}tables framework aka iptables. nftables version in Linux 3.13 is not yet complete. Some important features are missing and will be introduced in the following Linux versions. It is already usable in most cases but a complete support (read nftables at a better level than iptables) should be available in Linux 3.15.

The SteamOS non-UEFI / legacy BIOS support is derived from the community’s “Ye Olde SteamOSe” distribution fork. With this SteamOS Beta update, dual-boot and custom partitioning are also possible via the SteamOS installer’s “expert install” mode.

The Closed Internet of Things

From the crockpot to your smoke detector, the famous “Internet of Things” is slowly, and half hazardly coming into reality. Unfortunately it’s dominated by sealed off devices you have no direct control over. As these devices fill our homes, are we taking something fundamental away from the homeowner, and from the open source community?

Google just announced that it\’s snapping up Nest, maker of smart thermostat and smoke detectors, for $3.2 billion in cash. Nest has raised around $80 million from investors including Shasta Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Google Ventures.

It\’s not yet clear exactly how Google plans to use Nest, but the company obviously sees it as an important part of its future. A combination of Nest\’s home solutions coupled with Google\’s language recognition could give Google its strongest path yet into your home. \”Google will help us fully realize our vision of the conscious home and allow us to change the world faster than we ever could if we continued to go it alone,\” writes Fadell on the Nest blog. \”We\’ve had great momentum, but this is a rocket ship.\”
