Duty Officer Guide Part 2

  • Best Practices & Pro Tips For Running Duty Officer Missions

  • Trade in missions where you swap 5 lower quality doffs for 1 doff of the next quality level up have a small dilithium cost, check this before you complete the transaction.

  • Trade in NPCs offer you the chance to receive a doff of a specific species

  • Department Head / Shipboard assignments reflect each other currently which negates the need to zone into your ship to check every sector.

  • Unlocking repeatable assignments is crucial to efficiently gaining CXP for the tier 3 and tier 4 ranks where the targets are 50K adn 100K respectively.

  • If you pick up a rare assignment on your ship, consider posting that in the Doffjobs channel and inviting others to your bridge so that they can get that assignment too.

  • Check the list of “special” Duty Officers for rare and ultra rare doffs that you may want.

  • Dilithium Attainment Tips

  • In the center room of ESD there is an NPC who gives Doff missions. One of these is to turn in 3 contraband to gain 2, 000 dilithium ore on a 2 hr timer per character.

  • The KDF equivalent of this mission is located in The Great Hall in First City.

  • Recently the 24 hour cooldown on this mission  “disappeared”. It is unknown if that was intentional or simply a bug.

  • The KDF can pick up lots of Contraband from marauding assignments. Mailing those items to the FED characters on your account can allow you to run multiple version of this mission at the same time thus maximising your dilithium gains.

  • The 800 day veteran reward grants access to a new assignment at the academies which allows the veterans to refine an additional 1,000 Dilithium Ore above their 8,000 per day dilithium ore refinement cap.

  • Efficient Travel Tips

  • Sector Space travel is your constant enemy for Hardcore Doffing. Not only do your Bridge Officers constantly ask you to warp into wrong Sectors, lots of loading screens all the time… but if you Doff a lot, you do not want to spend half that time staring at your ship crawling slowly through sector space at Warp 10.

  • The Borg Engine for 5 EDC from the STF Vendor is the cheapest and STILL the fastest engine in STO.

  • The Omega Force Engine gives players the ability to use Slipstream twice as often. This is not listed on the tooltip but is easily verified in game.

  • Set your Drive Coil skill to at least 6, if not 9 for a solid base warp speed boost.

  • Diplomatic Immunity and Raiding Party buffs from other Players will also give you Sector Space speed gains. Players have been reported to reach speeds of Warp 40 in slipstream with all these Buffs stacked!

  • There is also a Personal Assignment that will buff your Drive Coil skill for one hour, make sure you have that one ready when you participate in the “Tour The Galaxy” Event (if you fly around Sector Space all the time you can just as reel in the free energy credits from that event too).

  • Additional Transwarps are always nice to have, but it has a cooldown timer so the Excelsior is not an ideal solution.

  • Astrometric scientist doffs on active space duty can reduce the cooldown of your transwarp to as little as 5 minutes.

  • The Odyssey cruisers also give you double the time in Slipstream mode.

  • That all cuts down on travel time, the more characters you play, the more important it will get to cut down on that.

  • You also will need to know where you want to go. Suricata’s Star Chart may help you with that, but the ingame map is fine too, just make sure to know your sector blocks and the sector borders within them.

  • Assignment Chains & Other Goodies

  • These are basically a series of Doff assignments that are linked together where you must complete one mission before unlocking the next*. When you reach the end of a chain there is often a special reward such as a rare or very rare duty officer, Mark XII Consoles, unique Food Items, Player Titles and all sorts of Items.

  • Mission completion is all that matters.  Success or failure is not considered.

  • The most important chain at the moment probably is the Colonial chain. There is one Colonial chain for every exploration cluster, it’s the hardest chain to complete but it also has the best rewards.

  • For every exploration cluster that you complete you will get one unique Rare Duty Officer and unlock a repeatable “support” assignment.

  • The unlocked support assignment will give you a Very Rare Duty Officer with the same traits as the Rare Duty Officer, but only on critical success so you might need to repeat it a few times to get lucky.

  • Once you complete the whole Colonial chain you will have gained 14 Rare and 14 Very Rare Duty Officers which is a great base roster to build upon.

  • The repeatable Support Mission will reward “Refugees”, which on their own seem rather worthless, but they can be turned in at “Asylum” Missions. Depending on the Refugee traits, you have a good chance to get a random high level DOff (not including the new Gamma Quadrant Races!).

  • You will need a lot of Colonists for these chains. 168 (per Character) to be precise, start collecting them whenever you can. If you got Energy Credits it’s a good idea to buy them on the Exchange as you need them.

  • Other than that there are “Resettle Colonists” assignments which will give you 5 Colonists every time, but it can only be started every 28 hours.

  • Colonists are stored separately from your DOff Roster in an extra Tab. That Tab can only hold 20 Colonists, so when you run out of space, take 5 of them and put them in a mail addressed to yourself.

  • You will need a certain amount of various the commodities. There is a Spreadsheet with all the Commodities you will need and the prices in the different places, cheapest are the Freighters that fly around Sector Space. If you follow the sheet you can save 238,700 Energy Credits (PER CHARACTER !).

  • If you place the purchased commodities in your Bank you will not have to open your replicator and scroll past all the food for every single assignment, which can get annoying real fast!

  • If you follow the “2 of each Profession” method on your DOff Roster you will run into problems on certain steps of the chain that require Technicians and Quartermasters, so it will be better keep more of those around until you are done with your Colonial Chains.

  • It is also noteworthy that Klingons can not enter Delta Volanis until they reach Marauding Rank 3 and Federation Players can not enter any of the Klingon Sectors until Diplomacy Rank 3. You can ask in the DOFFJOBS chat channel if someone can give you Diplomatic Immunity or Raiding Party.

  • The Consular Authority chain was released together with the Gamma Quadrant C-Store Packs. It is the “free in-game way” to get your hands on the new Duty Officers species like Bajorans, Cardassians, Wadi, Dosi, Karemma and so on. It is the only way to get Duty Officers with the new “resolve” Trait that is required for some assignments and gives you better chances for many of the new assignments that were added with the latest Duty Officer expansion. It does NOT include Jem’Hadar, Vorta, Tosk or Hunters, these seem to be only available through the C-Store Packs.

  • Biochemical Investigations: comes in 6 variants which each providing a different Gamma Quadrant commodity and completion rewards are special ground consumables. The assignment can be picked up from the DS9 zones.

  • Biogenic Weaponisation: a 2 part chain that unlocks a repeatable 45m assignment that grants elevated CXP rewards over other similar short duration assignments  i.e. 98 CXP. The initial  assignement can be picked up from Klingon Academy making it KDF only.

  • Children’s Toys: This 4 part assignment chain grants green, blue or purple MK XII random consoles upon overall completion. The first part gives you a “strange alien artifact” and this assignment  can be obtained in most of the Cardassian sectors. The remaining parts of the chain are then unlocked at the Science Officer inside your ship.

  • Colonisation: a 7 part chain which unlocks repeatable refugee and prisoner assignments in the exploration clusters. Critical success in those unlocked assignment can reward with a rare purple Doff. Each cluster offers a different purple Doff for a critical success. The initial assignment must be picked up in any of the exploration clusters.

  • Culinary Credentials: a 5 part chain which unlocks multiple repeatable assignments for elevated CXP rewards and overall completion unlocks the “Chef” and “Master Chef” titles. The initial assignment is picked up from within your ship.

  • Colonial Team: comes in 4 variants with 3 assignments in each aligned to the 4 Gamma Quadrant species (Karemma / Paradan / Dosi / Wadi). Completion unlocks high CXP assignments in the Zenas Expanse. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Cardassian sectors.

  • Consular Authority: a 4 part chain with 7 variants (Bajor / Karemma / Parada / Cardassia / Dosi / Ferasa / Wadi). Completion opens up a Doff exchange assignment where you can swap existing Doffs for one from the species variant you have completed. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Cardassian sectors.

  • Extreme Bartending: a 5 part chain where your bartender gets to show off some skills to unlock multiple repeatable assignments. The 4th part grants the “Bartender” title and the 5th grants the “Master Bartender” title. The initial assignment can be picked up aboard your ship.

  • Facility 4028 Fugitives: a 5 part chain which yields gamma quadrant commodities and rare gamma quadrant duty officers. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Regulus sector and sometimes in adjacent sectors.

  • Gaming Proficiency: a 4 part chain that unlocks the “Strategema Master” title upon completion. The initial mission can be picked up aboard your ship.

  • Ghosts Of The Jem’Hadar: a 10 part chain that unlocks many repeatable assignments and then provides a purple named Doff upon chain completion. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Cardassian sectors.

  • Project Chrysalis: a 6 part chain that unlocks a few repeatable missions and a purple doff upon completion. The initial assignment can be picked up from the Cardassian sectors.

  • Instigate Defection” assignments can be used to pick up doffs from the opposite faction. The assignment is picked up from…

  • Extricate Intelligence Asset” can be used to pick up doffs from the opposite faction. For FEDs the assignments can be picked up in Klingon bordering sectors and vice versa for the KDF.

  • Reclaim Assimilated Borg Drones” yields a green or blue doff and the assignment can be picked up in either the Sirius or Regulus sectors.

  • Investigate Temporal Anomaly” yields a purple bartender *(Guinan Doff) upon completion is is once per character only. The assignment can be picked up in exploration clusters, Beta Ursae, Eta Eridani and Omega Leonis so far. There may be other sectors too.

  • Combat Benefits With The Active Roster

Ask Cryptic: March 2012 is Here
DStahl’s back
A handy thread explaining (in short) what the Foundry could expect to see in Season 6

STF Loot Bags Explained

When you successfully complete an STF, including the optional objectives, you will have two different loot bags provided –  the personal loot bag and the team loot bag. Obviously, the personal one is loot just for you and the team loot bag, which is obtained from successfully completing the optional objectives, is divided up using the Need or Greed system. The loot you get in those bags is taken from multiple loot tables in the following manner.

Personal Loot Bag:

  • Table A – always gives you every item every time which is EDCs, dilithium and a mystery box. This is your GUARANTEED reward for mission completion.
  • Table B – always gives you at least one item but can be more which includes Bind On Equip space & ground gear and also Borg Salvage. This means that you will always get something from this loot table but not necessarily the salvage drop.
  • Table C – this table contains the high end loot, the Borg tech drops. Everytime you successfully complete an STF the game decides if you should be offered an item from this table. It is 100% NOT GUARANTEED loot. You have a chance to get the tech drop and a pretty low one based on user feedback 1% or lower is suspected right now (unconfirmed). This “roll” by the game engine does not take into account how many STF runs you have done it simply flips a coin to see if you are to be offered a tech drop for this specific STF completion. It is the primary source of making players insane as this heavily gates access to MK XII equipment and sets.

So for each completion of an STF as a player I will get:

    • EDCs / dilithium / mystery box
    • 1 or more Bind On Equip space gear,  ground gear or borg salvage
    • a chance at getting a Borg tech drop (chance guaranteed, loot not so)

The second loot bag is a shared one across the team based on completing the optional objectives in any STF. It is constructed in a similar way to the personal loot bag but with some key differences.

  • only 1 loot table containing all of the items (does NOT include Borg tech drops, EVER)
  • usually 4 items from the loot table are offered as a reward to the team (can include salvage)

This shows that the lock boxes that were added to the loot system recently are actually included in a table that has nothing to do with the Borg Tech drops and their minuscule drop rate is therefore a separate issue. The information presented here is derived from a  – post made by Gozer.

Bugs That We Would Like Community Feedback For:

De-Teaming bug in STFs. Randomly during the STFs the team is disbanded forcing everyone to re-team. If there are KDF players involved, the FED players cannot invite them and vice versa effectively splitting the team. This seems to happen more frequently if the optional objective has failed.

STF Prototype (MK XII) Loot Problem. Over the course of the last two weeks it has become apparent that these are not dropping at all or the drop rate has been nerfed in some way. We would like to know if the community are seeing the same lack of loot as the Jupiter Force have identified.

The team takes a look at the new STF gear, and the current gear’s changes. Plus Chris shares his 2012 STO predictions, and plays back a few from 2011, find out how they did!

This will be the last STOked produced for the foreseeable future. The show will be going on hiatus.

I plan to take another look at things, perhaps as the new featured episodes are near release, or something really exciting that I want to share with you all. And I will continue to monitor news and the STO community closely.

Check out the live stream on Saturdays, from time to time I plan to do live game play with the chat room during the hiatus. Following my G+ or Twitter feeds would be the fastest way to find out when those happen.

And finally, thank you so much for watching. If we make our return, I hope you’ll be there to tune in!

2011 PREDICTIONS from STOked 63

Jeremy:

  • Cryptic will acknowledge the positive impact the Foundry can have on their game, and embrace it by appointing a point of contact (or team) that will focus on publicity for the best-made and highly-reviewed player missions on a regular basis. Maybe a secondary weekly spotlight?
  • We will see an announcement toward the end of the year for a Romulan expansion. Including the new faction, 3–4 new sectors complete with PvE stories. The unique Romulan mechanic will be “espionage” and will be similar to Fed DXP.
  • More voice overs and cut scenes for episode content.

Chris:

  • Voice Overs + Cut Scenes (Demo record fly through)
  • More Star Trek
  • Slow Down
  • UGC will snowball into requiring a more robust out-of-game experience to discover and discuss new player created content.

2012 Predictions:

  • The possibility of failure lumes over STO. The price of failure may be too low.

  • The Foundry make it or break it time. DStahl has a big task on his hands. .

  • SW:TOR will help STO find it’s identity. SPACE COMBAT.

  • The next feature episode will be revealed to the community with the biggest fan fare yet.

  • D’angelo is replaced? The lack of transparency will turn the community even more angry. Anyone who takes the figure head spot, and does not chant “content, content, content” they will be flamed.

  • Foundry created episodes will take a larger role in the game. Cryptic will acknowledge them, and make efforts towards driving players towards them. After they get over having to admit they need the players to help them create content.

  • Crafting revamp replaces the current “vendorised” system with something spectacular and player skill based.

  • Additional writing staff, preferably with Star Trek experience, will be hired (possibly temporarily).

  • Cryptic will assign / hire a staff member to produce content using the Foundry toolset on a regular basis

  • STO will face it’s own “NGE” crisis and will only survive it by shifting focus to delivering content rather than game systems

New STF Gear Sets:

Set feedback thread

Borg set (3 set items for 5 edc each from a vendor, console from the mission ‘Assimilation’).

Shield – The most regenerative shield of all the sets along with the lowest shield capacity and has a bonus resistance to plasma damage attacks to the shields by 15%. A bonus to shield power improves shield regen and resistance.

Engine – one of the slower impulse engines but a standard agility and a power bonus to engines, the greatest bonus of this engine is the ability for transwarp speed in sector space (minimum speed of warp 14).

Deflector geared towards (in order of magnitude) – Resistance – (geared towards greater hull boost, moderate restistance to shield/energy/movement debuff and a boost to auxillary power.
Hull Strength – change to an offensive debuff like power drain or exotic damage? Make it more offensive/adaptive deflector?
Resistance to shield and energy drain abilities
Resistance to hold, disable, repel, knock and slow effects
Knock, repel and slow abilities
Aux power (improve aux based abilities)

Aegis – a craftable set
Shields – highest capacity (for the feds) covarient shields with one of the lowest regenerations but grants a boost to shield power and shield strength.

Engines – geared towards speed and defense (performing better at higher engine speeds).

Deflector  Shield defense (geared towards shield strength, buffs and resistance to debuffs and a small boost to shield regen/resistance).
Shield strength – Boost to placate/confuse? Make it a more evasive deflector?
Shield repair/healing
Resistance to energy/shield drain abilities
Resistance to hold, disable, repel, knock and slow effects
Shield power (improves shield regen and shield resistance)

MACO – FED only
Shield – while the capacity is lower than a covarient, resilient shields regenerate slightly better and allow less damage to impact the hull. In addition for each attack you receive you gain a stacking 10 second bonus of +1 to all power settings. Shield grants a standard 20% plasma damage resistance to the shields.

Engine – while a tiny bit slower than the Aegis engines there is no bonus to having a high engine power. In addition, ships in sector space can travel at 9.99 (so we aren’t all going to turn in to amphibian beings  ) and in the eventuality that your engines are disabled, you’ll still have some maneuverabilty.

Deflector – Defense orientated (geared towards hull strength, shield strength buffs, resistance to movement debuffs and transfering power between subsystems).
Hull strength
Shield repair/healing
Resistance to hold, disable, repel, knock and slow effects
Shield strength
Power transfer rate

Omega Force – FED/KDF
Shield – A less regenerative capacity version of the Borg shield. In addition though for each attack you receive you gain a bonus 5 flight speed and 30% turn rate for 5 seconds. Shield grants a standard 20% plasma damage resistance to the shields.

Engine – The fastest engine available to both factions and one of the most agile with a greater bonus when using a high engine power.

Deflector – Debuff orientated (equally passive and damaging debuff boost with a small boost to cloak detection and shield repair).
Cloak detection and sensor debuff resistance
Resistance to hold, disable, repel, knock and slow effects
Resistance to energy/shield drain abilities Change to hold, disable, repel, knock and slow effects? Make it a more ambush/hit and run deflector?
Improved accuracy
Damage from ‘exotic’ attacks

KHG – KDF only
Shield – the highest shield capacity covarient shield and one of the lowest regenerations, however, there is a 25% chance when hit by energy damage to debuff the enemy’s accuracy by 25% for 10 seconds and placate for 1 second. Shield grants a standard 20% plasma damage resistance to the shields.

Engine – the slowest engine overall but the most agile especially at low power levels with an added bonus of being able to restart disabled engines after only 1 second and a flat bonus to all power levels.

Deflector – strength and offense orientated (geared towards boosting hull strength and offensive debuffs with a bonus to transferring power).
Hull strength
Damage from ‘exotic’ attacks
Knock, repel and slow abilities
Power transfer
Improved cloak

Free to Play Matrix and FAQ
Changes for everyone:

  • KDF unlocks at 25 (we’ll talk about that more during the Ask Cryptic)
  • “Premium” Race selections coming off the C-Store (into the Doff system)
  • Foundry: “8 Starting Slots” – more coming to the C-Store?
*We are discussing the exact criteria for how Gold players will “unlock” new Foundry slots and hope to have this in place at or shortly after F2P launch.
    What does F2P not get?
  • Limited bag space
  • Limited EC storage
  • Fewer character slots (one each faction)
  • Very few boff slots (enough to have just 1 crew for both space + ground)
  • No Foundry authoring (can still play)
  • Ads in Vivox
  • Limited chat, mail & customer service
  • Let’s talk stipend! 400 points for subscriptions… Is that enough?

So are Lifers losing the Liberated Borg or not?

Ask Cryptic – September Edition

  • Voth as a potential baddie in the future?
  • Very few assets or features being added to the Foundry until F2P lands (but maybe more social zones hooked up as doorways)
  • Wait, WHAT? No new missions until after F2P lands? … ouch
  • Info on the Borg Ground Assault – sounds like a CO open mission, kinda.
  • Perfect World is going to help with localization efforts – huzzah!
  • Some talk of “costume” options for ships
  • “STO is a very solo-heavy MMO…” (commentary)
  • KDF at 25… (commentary)
  • FLEET PROGRESSION (not just starbases) coming with Season 5
  • PvP will have a strong focus in 2012
  • THEY RUINED PONIES! FOREVAR!!!~

I can find no problem with either the player of BOff version of the Efficient trait.

The player version adds +10 to Auxiliary, Engine, Shield and Weapons Efficiency Stats, and the BOff version adds +5.  That’s not +10/+5 to power levels, that to the stat, as though you were buying this skill. The Efficiency stats add more power to your systems the lower your power levels. So you gain more of a bonus if you power level is low.

Here is the formula:
(StatStarship_X_Efficiency/300)*(75 – Y_PowerLevel)
(100 / 300) * (75 – 25) =

Where X= Auxiliary, Engine, Shield or Weapons Efficiency Stats; and Y=the corresponding power system level. Note, this formula affects all Efficiency stat values, not just those gained by the Efficiency Traits.

The net results are very small and the UI may round your numbers down, so you may not see the bonus, especially with high power levels.

These values are old and have not changed in some time.  I verified today that they are working – at least in Season 4 they are working.  So if for some reason there is some other odd problem on holodeck right now that I am unaware of, it should be resolved by season 4.

KHITOMER ACCORD:

Don’t expect to be able to destroy the place JUST because you read a guide, or get tips. You need good gear, good specs, knowledgable players, and PRACTICE. But we’ll give you what help we can!

I’ve heard of skilled teams completing this entire mission in <1.5 hours, but the standard for even experienced groups seems to be between 2 and 3 hours, depending on a lot of various factors. To be safe, allot yourself 4 solid hours of gameplay, or be prepared to have an assigned break at some point, agreed-upon by your entire team.

MOIST walkthrus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMnx7IPi_Ck
Sanctuary of Wanderhome Guides: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlaHzeZbZA4

Space – Two Gates
Both will activate as soon as you kill the last of the baddies that start at the center.
– Kill all except the Tac Cube, and draw it toward one of the two gates.
– Kill the Tac Cube on top of one of the gates, to get a nice boost to its damage from the cube’s warp core explosion.

  • After the two gates are active, you will need to destroy BOTH simultaneously, while also fending off waves of drones and spheres.
    • If you let 6 probes reach the central structure, you FAIL and the universe implodes.
  • You must have sufficient DPS to split your team into two groups, and one of those groups must be capable of BOTH clearing the spawns AND killing the gate.
    • The other half of the team only has to be able to kill the spawns, and the gate is an added bonus.
    • Once you destroy one gate, you can work together on the other if necessary.
    • Once one gate drops, Cubes are added to the spawns of the remaining gate.
      • If you can manage it, keep a Cube alive until the next wave and use its Warp Core as a weapon against gate/spawns.
  • Gravity Well, Tractor Beam Mines, Tractor Beam Repulsors, Photonic Shockwave (hold Probes in place, or push AWAY from central gate).
  • Tricobalt Mines!

3 minutes between waves of Borg, each time with 15 seconds of vulnerability.

Ground – Phase 1 (clearing)
Usual tactics:
Observe the kill order (Nodes first)
– Some nodes are very cleverly hidden on this map. A few even require diversionary tactics to reach (pulling the borg team THEN sending in a Sniper to eliminate the Node).
Expose/Exploit
– Might as well practice now, this will become even more crucial when the Borg start adapting more.

Borg are not in place, they beam in. Don’t send scouts, advance together and cautiously.
Best if you have at least one team member that knows the spawns/nodes.

Ground – Phase 2 (forcefield room, split team)

  • Endurance Team stays in the room with 6 nodes, and deactivates the shields.
    • The Borg that will spawn in this chamber are relatively wimpy.
    • Each shield node corresponds to a node in the main room you came from.
  • DPS Team stays in the main chamber and targets the nodes, as the shields drop (by other team)
    • You only have 3-4 seconds to drop the node before the shield reactivates, THEN you have to clear out the Borg that spawned in. THIS IS A DPS RACE.

After deactivating the 6th Node, you’ll be assaulted by dozens and dozens of borgs, including some Elite Tacticals that seem especially beefy. This is an endurance test, not a DPS race. STAY ALIVE.

Destroy the two “IMR Chambers” (top floor, and bottom floor)
Before destroying them, you can step inside to earn your Borg Sci Boff and an Accolade.
Step in SLOWLY, and a groupmate can rez you.

BOSS ROOM!
Poke in and kill the nodes first, then clear his buddies, then DPS him down.
Seal off the entry with Force Domes / Cover Shields, to prevent flanking.
He’s resilient, but doesn’t hit any harder than an Elite Tactical.

Space – Boss Battle
Step 1 – beat up Scimmy
Step 2 – destroy massive wave of Probes
Step 3 – CLICK FOLLOW

  • You may have to find a way to drop Red Alert, in order to be able to follow. My team managed this by using a Photonic Fleet to destroy the last few probes, while we retreated.
  • If you do not CLICK FOLLOW, you may be left behind and unable to participate in the next encounter. It’s not an actual map transfer, and there’s an invisible wall blocking you from manually travelling to the next area.

Be prepared for a lengthy battle against the final Space Boss.

  • Her CLOAK cannot be counter-acted, so just suck it up.
  • Keep your Evasive Maneuvers active to avoid the Thalaron Cannon, if you can.
    • A decent stack of resist buff can also turn it into a Thalaron Tickler (Hazard Emitters, Aux to SIF, Brace for Impact)
      • Extend Shields / Emergency to Shields
  • Good idea to have a skilled Gravity Well, can suck in groups of Probes to cause chain explosions.
  • Tractor Beam can also come in handy, as the boss likes to run away. Won’t cancel her Cloak, but may keep her nearby while she’s uncloaked. Some guides say toss this power, others say use it. Looks like a matter of taste.

Qo’nos Review

  • It feels, finally, like a CITY!
    • Roaming NPCs, varied architecture, flavor text/dialogues
    • The changing street signs are an awesome touch
  • The Bank (run by Ferengi)
    • First, awesome touch to have Ferengi in charge… just makes sense to a certain degree
    • Second, the “warehouse” area beneath the platform is just a mind-bogglingly awesome touch
  • The Boff Arena
    • This was my favorite part of the old Qo’nos, so I’m glad it’s still intact. Although having to “zone” to it was a bit jarring. I hope that transition can be smoothed out.
  • The Shipyard
    • O. M. G.
    • Not intuitive to find, but once you do it makes PERFECT sense
    • The fact that there’s no zoning when you transition, means that they managed to combine ground and space in some sort of epic fashion. Compliments to the gurus behind that.
      • Side Note: This was my first time seeing the new Ship Acquisition UI and it is TOTAL HAWTNESS.

MATH

o   New Options – there is now a new set of shooter mode controls and keybinds in the options menu, so you can manage both independently.
o   All values have been updated – Although the classic control mechanics are preserved in STO, the ground game has been completely rebalanced. All values including HP, damage, and most ground Kit and Captain abilities have been modified and updated.
o   Tooltips – All ground combat powers have been given complete and accurate tooltips.
o   Swap to shooter mode – use the N key to Swap between Shooter and RPG mode (we are probably remapping this). If you open a menu (like your skill page) while in shooter mode, you will temporarily drop back to RPG mode, so you can maintain control over your character. Use L-Mouse and R-Mouse to fire your primary and secondary attack on your weapon. Middle mouse will activate your melee attack. You can, however, still use the keyboard keys – 1, 2, and 3 – if you prefer. Notice you can fire your weapon without a target.
o   Cover – STO has a simple cover mechanic. Crouching behind a tall object can break line of site from your foe. I don’t want to over-sell this, but it does work.
o   R and T key – Using R and T will temporarily change the focus of your Mouse buttons. (This may change a bit. We already have a new iteration that may even be out in time for the interview).
o   Kit and Captain abilities – In RPG mode, like always, all abilities require a target.  However in Shooter mode, it works differently. If an ability can target self or friend, you won’t need a target. For instance, if you target an ally with a heal, you will heal that target. If you have no friendly target, you will heal yourself. Kit or Captain abilities that harm or debuff a single foe still requires a target, even in shooter mode.  This is to prevent misfires of abilities that have large cooldowns. However, Kit and Captain abilities that are AoE do not require a target to activate in shooter mode. If you have no target, the ability will activate at max range. So, for instance, you can place a Dampening field at a point on the ground in shooter mode.
o   Grenades – As an aoe, they do not require a target to activate in shooter mode.  Most significantly, they can be thrown over walls.
o   All weapons updated – You will now see a significant difference between each weapon.  They each have noticeable advantages and disadvantages, and swapping weapons will become much more meaningful.
o   Weapon melee – Melee can be activated with the middle mouse button or the 3 key. It is now a combo. The rifle combo is the most advance, while the Assault combo is more limited. Rifle Combos will change attacks automatically. The first always tries to push the target back, but if the target has grown resistant to knock backs, the combo will automatically change to expose attacks.  Once the target is exposed, the combo will again change to Exploit attacks.
o   Notable Weapon changes – Some weapons have been completely changed. When you log in, they will be updated. We can go through as many as you like, outlining the key differences of each.  But the following had the most significant change:

      • Assault Rapid sweep – Is now a Full Auto Rifle, and now uses Soldier skill instead of Special Forces. Its much faster and responsive, and its secondary attack can be swept across targets. Note the Dual Pistol secondary attack can also be swept.
      • Pulsewave rifle and Assault Arcwave – Both of these weapons are now the Pulsewave. We combined the secondary attacks of both weapons into one. The Pulsewave is now effectively an energy shotgun. Its fast and powerful, and both attacks do more damage the closer you are to the target.
      • Assault Multi-Beam – This weapon was given the most significant upgrade. It is now a minigun! Both attacks have a spool-up time, but are very high in damage. Its secondary attack fire an extremely long burst that can be swept across multiple targets.

o   What else is planned – Possible iteration on R and T with UI updates, Boff powers and Commands, splitting Aim and Crouch, bug fixes, tuning.
o   Questions and feedback – any additional questions or comments from you

The Cure

Space Part 1
Bleh, kill borg. Easy.

Ground Part 2
General Tips –
* Go with somebody that knows where nodes are (frequently hidden)
* Pay attention to your leader!
* Ground Map is outside (avoid flanking, stay mobile)
* Engineers cannot use Force Domes (Bunker Kit) to much effectiveness

1) Equipment
At least 2 sniper rifles (for nodes, and exploits)
CRM 200 — best expose weapon, and adds slow effect
Tac – Squad Leader / Fire Team
Eng – Fabrication (Bunker kit is of limited use, but could still be handy)
Sci – Medic

2) Puzzle Tactics
* Brute Force
* Start, fail, restart (1 less spawn to deal with)
(mention “zero aggro” but that we didn’t use it)
* Drop toys between nodes, to draw aggro from beam-ins.

3) Boss tactics
Healer tank his face
He’s got a Chain Lightning attack (won’t use it if people are out of range)
TR-116 for End Boss (Target pre-order) — “Field of Fire”

SPACE – Part 3
Full Impulse IMMEDIATELY, to get to the space stations and eliminate the borg-ifiers.
If you blow up 4, the rest launch.
Try and release the Neg’vars first (farthest from you)

BOSS – Assimilated Carrier
Use AOE attacks to counteract fighter swarms

In the first of a 3-week long series of events, the STOked boys are taking you on an in-depth tour of the Borg Special Task Force missions. Up this week is a guide to “The Infected” which includes tips and tricks for painlessly eliminating the Borg drones, and their leaders.

Before we dig into that however, BIG NEWS landed this week regarding the impending purchase of Cryptic Studios by Perfect World International. Despite the community’s uproar over this news, we’re taking a more level-headed approach to the corporate nature of this acquisition, and intend to share our thoughts on why this could be one of the best business moves STO could potentially see.

Infected Tips

Watch the uncut full stream here & Part 2 here:

General Tips:
– If you’re new, get experienced players to lead you through. There’s plenty out there now.
– Voice chat is highly recommended. (Vivox coming soon!)
– Follow directions. Or if you’re leading, give clear directions that are easy to follow!
– Do not progress any dialog pop-ups until the Team Leader gives the OK, or does it him/herself.
– Do not go in unprepared! Make sure you have a solid spec that plays to the specific strengths of both your Space AND Ground abilities.

SPACE:
Zip around BEHIND the gate, and do not activate the two popups until the team is in position.
With high DPS, you may be able to destroy the gate in a single activation sequence.
If you destroy the gate without killing transmitters, you get better loot.
If you do not destroy the gate in a single activation, you will be faced with 3-4 waves of borg ships that get progressively more and more powerful with each wave.

Good Space Boff Abilities:
Hazard Emitters (practically a must-have)
Tactical Team
A lot of DPS/buffs/debuffs
Gravity Well — good for chain reactions on warp cores!

Tactical Cubes have a ~5km explosion radius. If you are trying to keep the Transmitters alive, and have a Tac Cube spawned, be sure to lure it away from them before destroying the cube.

Tweet Update:
Cryptic_Gozer Dan Griffis
Weekly STF Update… Infected space 85% complete. Battle to destroy the Transwarp Gateway is much more interesting now 🙂

GROUND:
Ground Weapons:
Tactical — Sniper(x2)
Engineer+Science — CRM200 + Melee

Ground Kits:
Engineer: Fabrication or Bunker Kit
Tactical: Fire Team or Squad Leader
Science: Medic (at least one on the team)… if you want to DPS, I recommend Geophysicist

Order of Ground Targets:
Interlink Node
Infected
Drone
Medical
(Protos? Can be cleaned up at any time after Medical. May despawn on their own.)
AFTER ONLY TACTICALS ARE LEFT, SWITCH TO MELEE WEAPON
Tactical
Heavy
Elite

FIRST BOSS: Ogen
Pull him OUT of his room, into the hallway.
He will stop and summon friends halfway through the fight. If you are in the hallway, they will not join the battle.

END BOSS: Manus
Get into the alcoves on the wall opposite from the entry doorway.
This blocks line of sight between group members (meaning, no heals!), which prevents her “chain lightning” attack from hitting more than one target at a time.

NEXT WEEK: “The Cure”
Keep your tips/guides coming! Jeremy is gonna try and post the best ones over at JupiterColony.com
