Plasma 5.8 LTS Beta. Here for the Long Term.

Thursday, 15 September 2016. Today KDE releases a beta of its first Long Term Support edition of its flagship desktop software, Plasma. This marks the point where the developers and designers are happy to recommend Plasma for the widest possible audience be they enterprise or non-techy home users. If you tried a KDE desktop previously and have moved away, now is the time to re-assess, Plasma is simple by default, powerful when needed.

Teleport: Modern SSH server for clusters and teams.

Gravitational Teleport is a modern SSH server for remotely accessing clusters of Linux servers via SSH or HTTPS. It is intended to be used instead of sshd. Teleport enables teams to easily adopt the best SSH practices like:

  • No need to distribute keys: Teleport uses certificate-based access with automatic expiration time.
  • Enforcement of 2nd factor authentication.
  • Cluster introspection: every Teleport node becomes a part of a cluster and is visible on the Web UI.
  • Record and replay SSH sessions for knowledge sharing and auditing purposes.
  • Collaboratively troubleshoot issues through session sharing.
  • Connect to clusters located behind firewalls without direct Internet access via SSH bastions.
  • Ability to integrate SSH credentials with your organization identities via OAuth (Google Apps, Github).

Teleport is built on top of the high-quality Golang SSH implementation and it is fully compatible with OpenSSH.

Nextcloud Box

The Nextcloud box consists of the following parts:

  • 1 TB USB3 hard drive from WDLabs

  • microUSB charger, cables and adapters, a screw driver and screws
  • microSD card with Snappy Ubuntu Core as OS
  • Apache, MySQL and the latest Nextcloud 10 pre-installed and ready to go

The Box is compatible with the Raspberry Pi 2, which you need to supply yourself. The Box can also fit the Raspberry Pi 3 and the oDroid C2. These will be supported by the software in a future release.

Windows + Android?

Microsoft will most likely announce this week that it will enable customers to run Android apps on their Windows 10 phones, tablets and PCs. The timing ostensibly makes sense, as the software giant’s Build conference, held this week in San Francisco, targets developers. But I wonder what message this change will send to developers and users, especially at a time when the company is also pushing a universal app strategy centered on Windows.

Spotify, RunKeeper, and other Android apps get their own Google Now cards

Spotify can recommend playlists based on your listening history; the same is true for TuneIn Radio and YouTube. Zipcar will remind users when their car reservation is set to expire and provide quick links for navigating to the drop-off location or extending the rental. Fitness apps from RunKeeper, Jawbone, and Adidas can now remind you of your daily goals and encourage you to work toward them. You can keep up with breaking news by enabling cards from ABC News, Circa, or Feedly. And there’s even an OpenTable Google Now card that will let you pay your dinner bill with a tap.

Announcing the next Ubuntu Online Summit

While the focus on development in the last few cycles has been on shaping up and implementing the phone, this doesn’t mean other key parts of the project have been left out. The phone has helped create the platform and tools that will ultimately bring all these projects together, into a converged code base and user experience. From desktop to phone, to the cloud, to things, and back to the desktop.

The hidden structure of the Apple keynote

The Apple Keynotes podcast on the iTunes Store lists 27 events since Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone on Jan. 9, 2007. (A few are missing.)

They are an average 88 minutes long, with a similar look and feel—a minimalist slide presentation with live demos from Apple executives and industry leaders, punctuated by videos explaining Apple’s design and manufacturing processes

When Steve Jobs was running Apple and healthy, he dominated the stage. During Jobs’ finest performance—his 2007 iPhone “Stevenote”—he spent more than 90 minutes on stage, with breaks only to invite partners up for remarks, including then-Google CEO (and then-Apple board member) Eric Schmidt.

Cook usually spends less than 20 minutes onstage per event

On average, it has taken about 45 minutes to get to that part. But more recently, it has been shorter. With plenty to cover tomorrow—supposedly including two new iPhones, a wearable device, and a payments system—there shouldn’t be much filler content.

U.S. details plans for car-to-car safety communications

After more than a decade of research into car-to-car communications, U.S. auto safety regulators took a step forward today by unveiling their plan for requiring cars to have wireless gear that will enable them to warn drivers of danger.

These vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) transmitters and software won’t be cheap, costing an estimated $341 to $350 per vehicle in 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a report.

Just two of the possible features that rely on V2V technology — one that warns drivers if they don’t have enough time to make a left turn and another that urges them to stop if another car is about to run a red light — could prevent 25,000 to 592,000 crashes and save 49 to 1,083 lives annually when the entire U.S. vehicle fleet has the technology, according to today’s report.

The current V2V system is set up in such a way that that cars swap messages 10 times per second about their position in space, which direction they are headed and how quickly they are moving in that direction. If two cars are on a collision course, the driver can be presented a warning.

Google Is Planning to Offer Accounts to Kids Under 13

Google GOOGL +1.52% plans to offer accounts to children under 13 years old for the first time, a move that will take the world’s largest Internet search provider into a controversial and operationally complex new market.

Google and most other Internet companies tread carefully because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA. The law imposes strict limits on how information about children under 13 is collected; it requires parents’ consent and tightly controls how that data can be used for advertising. (Companies are not liable if customers lie to them about user ages).

The company’s new effort is partly driven by the fact that some parents are already trying to sign their kids up to the company’s services. Google wants to make the process easier and compliant with the rules, the person said.

The HP Stream 14 itself shares many other features with Chromebooks: It has a 1366 x 768 display, for example, which is nearly ubiquitous on Chrome OS laptops. An energy-efficient AMD chip powers the Stream 14, combined with 2 GB of memory and either 32 or 64 GB of flash storage as well as an SDXC card slot. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a trio of USB ports, HDMI out and a webcam make up the rest of the package. Like the Android SlateBook 14 that HP also sells, the HP Stream 14 will have four speakers and support Beats Audio.

The 3.9-pound laptop runs Windows 8.1

Adam Carolla Settles With Podcasting Patent Troll – Slashdot

Personal Audio has been trying to assert patents they claim cover podcasting for some time now; in March Adam Carolla was sued and decided to fight back. Via the EFF comes news that he has settled with Personal Audio, and the outcome is likely beneficial to those still fighting the trolls. From the article: Although the settlement is confidential, we can guess the terms. This is because Personal Audio sent out a press release last month saying it was willing to walk away from its suit with Carolla. So we can assume that Carolla did not pay Personal Audio a penny. We can also assume that, in exchange, Carolla has given up the opportunity to challenge the patent and the chance to get his attorney’s fees. … EFF’s own challenge to Personal Audio’s patent is on a separate track and will continue … with a ruling likely by April 2015. … We hope that Personal Audio’s public statements on this issue mean that it has truly abandoned threatening and suing podcasters. Though a press release might not be legally binding, the company will have a hard time justifying any further litigation (or threats of litigation) against podcasters. Any future targets can point to this statement. Carolla deserves recognition for getting this result.

YouTube to block indie labels who don’t sign up to new music service

Independent artists could disappear from YouTube “in a matter of days” after the Google video service confirmed it was dropping content from independent labels that have not signed up for its upcoming subscription music service.

YouTube is about to begin testing the new service — which will charge people to watch and listen to music without ads, and download songs to their mobile devices — within the next few days, initially within Google.

YouTube executives argue that they cannot offer music on the free service without it also being available on the paid service as this would disappoint its subscribers. The solution? To take down songs that can’t be available on both services.

“We’re adding subscription-based features for music on YouTube to bring our music partners new revenue streams in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars YouTube already generates for them each year,” said a YouTube spokesman in a statement

SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

We’re conducting a beta of the overall Steam living-room experience, so we needed to build prototype hardware on which to run tests. At Valve we always rely on real-world testing as part of our design process. The specific machine we’re testing is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware. Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors.

We realized early on that our goals required a new kind of input technology — one that could bridge the gap from the desk to the living room without compromises. So we spent a year experimenting with new approaches to input and we now believe we’ve arrived at something worth sharing and testing with you.

Romanian hacker accused of breaking into NASA

  • Authorities of the Romania Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) have arrested a 26 year old who is accused to breaking in to multiple servers at NASA
  • The authorities claim that the attacker destroyed protected data and restricted access to it, resulting in a loss of over $500,000
  • Charges against Robert Butyka include:
  • obtaining unauthorized access and causing severe disruptions to a computer system
  • modifying, damaging and restricting access to data without authorization
  • possession of hacking programs
  • “Through criminal activity, the accused severely affected the operation of computer servers by introducing, modifying and damaging electronic data and restricting access to it,” DIICOT said in a statement.
  • He is to be tried in Romania, as there has been no extradition request.

Valve: Hackers Accessed Steam Users’ Encrypted Passwords, Credit Cards

  • Attackers managed to gain access to the user database
  • The database contained: username, email address, hashed and salted password, game purchase history, billing address, and encrypted credit card data.
  • Valve had not yet determined if the database had been copied or viewed
  • Valve originally believed that only the user forums had been compromised, but during the investigation it was determined that the compromised extended to all user data
  • Valve reports that they have not noticed an increase in login attempts and have not received any reports of misused credit cards. This suggests that the data was either not taken, or is sufficiently protected to delay its use.
  • If the database was taken, I would expect to see a spear phishing attack, using the name, username and email address of the users to ask them to ‘reset’ their steam password.
  • All forum accounts will require a password reset, however valve is not forcing a password reset on all steam accounts.

Private Browsing may not be as private as advertised

  • Private Browsing mode stops the browser from recording history, and isolates your cookies, not sending cookies from regular browsing mode, and removing the new cookies when you leave private mode.
  • Research has found that many plugins do not respect private mode, especially Adobe Flash, which has its own separate cookie system. This means a site that you visited in private mode, could read those cookies even in regular mode, and vice versa . Flash has since been fixed, make sure you upgrade.
  • Chrome and Internet Explorer have taken to automatically disabling plugins in private mode

Online music services like Spotify, Pandora, and many others are exploding. But how do they compare? What features do they each have that make them unique?

Tonight we look into some of our favorite music streaming service, and answer those questions, and many more!

Show Feeds:

Show Notes:

OUR AUDIO STREAM:  jupiterbroadcasting.com/listen

PANDORA
www.pandora.com

Pros:
– Good for finding new music that is similar to songs you like.
– Easy to purchase songs you like.
– Separate stations for different “moods”

Cons:
– Commercials
– Free service limits the number of songs you can skip.
– No downloadable client unless you pay for the service.

Price:
– $36/year for desktop subscription
– Mobile app is free but includes ads, customer feedback indicates it doesn’t multitask well

last.fm
www.last.fm

Pros:
– Social music sharing experience (FB/Twitter sharing, and on-site socializing)
– Allows purchase of songs you like right from the site.
– “Scrobbler” download parses your existing library and sets up your preferences automatically.
– Live event listings

Cons:
– Small library in some genres, lots of repeated music.
– Premade stations aren’t that great, better to build your own playlists (which takes time)
– Download client doesn’t fully implement social features, just the music scrobbling.

Price:
– Free, free, free.

Grooveshark
https://listen.grooveshark.com

Pros:
– HUGE library of songs
– Lots of variety under the “Radio” function
– Powerful UI, easy to use.

Cons:
– No prebuilt playlists
– Can’t sort searches by music genre

Price:
– Free in the web player
– $6/mo for ads-free client
– $9/mo for mobile app access with account syncing

I <3 Radio
https://www.iheartradio.com/index.html

Pros:
– Listen to your favorite local radio no matter where you are.
– Some original stations

Cons:
– Commercials and talk just like normal radio
– Not all stations use it.
– Audio quality seems inconsistent on some stations.

Other Options:
Slacker
Yahoo! Music (aka Launchcast)
1club.fm
Sirius or XM Satellite Radio
