Oracle sues Google over Android and Java

  1. Google’s response: We are disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Googleand the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit,” Google said in a statement to Mashable earlier today. “The open-source Java community goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the web a better place. We will strongly defend open-source standards and will continue to work with the industry to develop the Android platform.”

Jolicloud 1.0 Released!

Jolicloud is built on top of the Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) Netbook Edition.

Jolicloud 1.0 uses Chromium and provides its own launcher that is built with HTML5.

Uses the Nautilus file manager and other gnome apps/tools in many places.

The launcher has a very smooth Web-like aesthetic with lots of gray gradients and shadows.

In the App Center, software is sorted by the number of “likes” each application has received from the Jolicloud user community.

The Jolicloud software lets you link multiple Jolicloud computers to your account and will keep your launcher configuration in sync between all of them.

ACTION INVESTIGATION:

Where has all the Linux news gone? Linux and open source news stories and trending down across the board, from less stories about Linux distros to open source projects. What’s going on?

News stores about Fedora are trending down.

     And Ubuntu.

News stories just about, and/or discussing Linux also trending downward.

News about open source, or discussing open source.

End user Google search topic trends are also down.

Some have noticed Linux/OSS news stories on Digg often sit for more than a week before anything new makes it to the top, indicating a major lack of submissions/diggs. Some say this might be a organized attack by Microsoft.

Buzz feed discussion thread on this topic, a great read thanks everyone!

Building a Linux Home Server:

Easy to use pre-built file server Linux OS: openfiler.com

Some of Chris’s Home Server Requirements:

1.    Must do basic file services, SMB, NFS, SSH/SCP.

2.    Needs to be able to run Dropbox, or another desktop sync program. I automate a lot of stuff with Dropbox.

3.    The ability to run a simple DNS server.

4.    The abilty to run X86 apps, like the Java Runtime & PS3 Media Server

5.    Can run SABnzbd

Chris’s theoretical server build:

Load base host OS, perhaps Ubuntu Server LTS – Must be something w/low foot print, but long-term support with minimal pre-loaded software.

     Install VirtualBox.

Build openSUSE server OS using the SUSE Studio

Load VM into VirtualBox, create Virual VSD disk volumes on the storage array. Manage virtual storage via VirtualBox.

Look into phpVirtualBox, a web UI for VirtualBox (I’d like my host OS to run headless, or at least with X11 not running typically)
