Runs Linux

The NES Classic, Runs Linux

With a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7, 256 MB of RAM, and 512 MB of NAND Flash, it is typical of the hardware found in Linux single board computers, like the Raspberry Pi 2. Surprisingly for Nintendo, there does not seem to be any custom components in it, and it looks like it even does run Linux.

Desktop App Pick

SSH Power Tool

The SSH Power Tool (sshpt) enables you to execute commands and upload files to many servers simultaneously via SSH without using pre-shared keys. Uploaded files and commands can be executed directly or via sudo. Connection and command execution results are output in standard CSV format for easy importing into spreadsheets, databases, or data mining applications.

Advantages

Since sshpt does not utilize pre-shared SSH keys it will use provided credentials for all outgoing SSH connections. This has many advantages:

  • Can be used immediately: No need to spend enormous amounts of time setting up pre-shared keys.
  • More secure: A server with pre-shared keys is a huge security risk. It literally holds the keys to the castle! With sshpt you can perform all the same tasks as with pre-shared keys with less risk to your infrastructure.
  • More compliant: Executing commands as root via pre-shared keys makes it hard to figure out after-the-fact who did what (root as a shared account). When an administrator (or user!) uses sshpt to execute commands it is much easier to figure out “who did what and when” from an auditing standpoint.

It’s official: Oracle will appeal its “fair use” loss against Google

Oracle’s post-trial motions, which the district court judge rejected, indicate the tack it might try to take on appeal. It could focus on jury instructions that it viewed as improper, or Oracle could simply argue that the evidence presented at trial was so overwhelming that no reasonable jury could have found in Google’s favor.

VoCore2: $4 Coin-sized Linux Computer with WiFi

Coin-sized Linux computer & smart router, target to make wireless life easier, fully open source.

VoCore2 is an open source Linux computer and a fully-functional wireless router that is smaller than a coin. It can also act as a VPN gateway for a network, an AirPlay station to play lossless music, a private cloud to store your photos, video, and code, and much more.

The Lite version of the VoCore2 features a 580MHz MT7688AN MediaTek system on chip (SoC), 64MB of DDR2 RAM, 8MB of NOR storage, and a single antenna slot for Wi-Fi that supports 150Mbps.

All this for $4.

Spend $12 and go for the full VoCore2 option and you get the same SoC, but you get 128MB of DDR2 RAM, 16MB of NOR storage, two antenna slots supporting 300Mbps, an on-board antenna, and PCIe 1.1 support.

Both versions of the VoCore2 have a power consumption of 74mA at standby, and 230mA at full speed. With this low power consumption, a small 9800mAh battery pack can power it for more than four days.

  • Name: Name: Andrew D

  • Subject: Chris was right

I think Chris’ stance on Lenovo being the problem and how they should be ashamed for building a non linux compatible machine was off target. Yes Intel are the issue here, but not Lenovo.

If Microsoft or any other company goes to a hardware manufacturer asked for a feature or specification to make their product stand out (like in this case better battery life), then there is no reason why that hardware manufacturer should not do that.

Just because it makes it makes it Linux incompatible seems to be the uproar here.

I didn’t see people grabbing pitchforks when the Raspberry Pi 1 and 2 etc didn’t have standard windows support from the ARM processor.

Noah was dead right with this one. It’s disappointing that the last words on the topic were ‘Shame on Lenovo, they will never make that mistake ever again. +1 for the good guys’

Apart from that, loved the rest of it.

Hello, this is James from past las chatrooms and i recently saw where both of you use flux and i have been having back and other pain and was wondering if this would help. Doubtful to most, but between using flux and staying out of the sunlight considering the medications i am on i thought i would give it a try.

What have i got to lose right? I am in process of saving money for starting up a linux laptop business and i want to express my sincerest thanks to the developers of this program as well as you at jb for putting this flux program into the spotlight. I no longer have much joint back or shoulder pain and though i was having seizures and falls i have had none since Monday of last week. Thanks to you and the developers i am leading a new life. Thanks so much!

Ubuntu Tablet Pushed Back

Bq has quietly pushed back the shipping estimate of the world’s first true Ubuntu tablet by one week.

Updating shipping information for both HD and FHD models of tablet on its website, Bq say “Deliveries will take place starting from the second half of April“.

It previously read: “Deliveries will take place starting from the second week of April” (emphasis ours).

Not a huge delay but a delay nonetheless.

If you pre-ordered the tablet on the assumption of getting it this week this is us telling why you may be waiting a little longer for a dispatch notice.

The delay was pointed out to us by reader Jack F., who explained in his e-mail

“I pre-ordered the BQ tablet thinking that deliveries would take place second week of April. BQ have changed this to second half on their site without notifying via email it would be delayed. Would be good for other customers to know.”

itch.io Open Market Place trying to get App on Steam

Itch.io is an open marketplace for indie games. According to their About page, if you’ve made a game you can easily upload it, set the price, and sell your game through Itch.io, and “It’s never necessary to get votes, likes, or follows to get your content approved…”

Speaking of which, the creators of Itch.io have a desktop client called Itch, and while it’s already available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, they’re going a step further by putting Itch on Steam Greenlight, where they hope to get enough votes, likes, or follows to make it onto Steam proper. Which sounds a bit strange, trying to launch an app for a games marketplace on another games marketplace. As one commenter puts it: “storefrontception.”

Linus Torvalds Gives TED Talk

Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux operating system and the Git source code management system, opened the “Code Power” session at the recent TED2016 conference, speaking in an interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson.

In the talk, Torvalds, whose blunt approach in dealing with people is well known, stated, “I’m actually not a people person. I don’t really love other people, but I do love other people who get involved in my project.”

In the TED talk, Torvalds admitted that he is sometimes “myopic, when it comes to other people’s feelings…” However, he said, “What I love about open source is that it really allows different people to work together.”

Nonetheless, typically self-deprecating Torvalds doesn’t see himself as a visionary. Instead, he says: “I’m an engineer. I’m happy with the people who are wandering around looking at the stars but I am looking at the ground and I want to fix the pothole before I fall in.”

I actually am very happy with the Linux desktop, and I started the project for my own needs, and my needs are very much fulfilled. That’s why, to me, it’s not a failure. I would obviously love for Linux to take over that world too, but it turns out it’s a really hard area to enter. I’m still working on it. It’s been 25 years. I can do this for another 25. I’ll wear them down.”

rTorrent is a quick and efficient BitTorrent client that uses, and is in development alongside, the libTorrent (not to be confused with libtorrent-rasterbar) library. It is written in C++ and uses the ncurses programming library, which means it uses a text user interface. When combined with a terminal multiplexer (e.g. GNU Screen or Tmux) and Secure Shell, it becomes a convenient remote BitTorrent client.

Imcomptech

The cost for me to share music is low, and the benefits are high. There are a lot of schools with no money, and plenty of film makers who want to have music – but can’t afford to clear copyrights from the existing systems that are set up. I believe that copyright is badly broken , so I chose a license that allows me to to give away the rights I wish to surrender.

PC gaming is expanding, Valve’s GDC 2015 announcements recap

Valve Controller Final

Valve attended GDC in full force this year and talked about a lot of stuff. Here’s everything they talked about it in one post.

More than 50 titles are highlighted, including three of PCWorld’s favorite games of 2014The Talos Principle, Transistor, _and our Game of the Year, _Wasteland 2—and a slew of other spectacular titles like Metro Redux, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Civilization: Beyond Earth, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, _and _Goat Simulator, among many others.

This drop to just over 1.0% is the lowest numbers we’ve seen for Linux’s representation on Steam in quite a number of months. However, it’s not a huge surprise.

With the Vulkan API still in flux and not finalized until later this year, Valve has been developing their own Intel GPU reference driver for Vulkan to help early adopters boot-strap their code. Valve said during their presentation today at GDC2015 that this Intel Linux driver will be open-sourced, but they haven’t provided a time-frame for doing so.

VMware alleged to have violated Linux’s open source license for years

Christoph Hellwig

Linux kernel developer Christoph Hellwig filed the suit in the district court of Hamburg, Germany with funding from the nonprofit Software Freedom Conservancy, which works to “promote, improve, develop, and defend” free and open source software. The case centers on “a combined work that VMware allegedly created by combining their own code (‘vmkernel’) with portions of Linux’s code, which was licensed only under GPLv2,” _the group said in an FAQ describing the lawsuit._

Software Freedom Conservancy

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. This is the regretful but necessary next step in both Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply properly with the terms of the GPLv2, the license of Linux and many other Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

No reboot patching comes to Linux 4.0

Living patching in Linux 4.0

At the Linux Plumbers Conference in October 2014, the two groups got together and started work on a way to _patch Linux without rebooting that combines the best of both programs. Essentially, what they ended up doing was putting both kpatch and kGraft in the 4.0 Linux kernel._

Lenovo To Wipe Superfish Off PCs t

An anonymous reader send news from the Wall Street Journal, where Lenovo CTO Peter Hortensius said in an interview that the company will roll out a software update to remove the Superfish adware from its laptops. “As soon as the programmer is finished, we will provide a tool that removes all traces of the app from people’s laptops; this goes further than simply uninstalling the app. Once the app-wiping software is finished tonight or tomorrow, we’ll issue a press release with information on how to get it.” When asked whether his company vets the software they pre-install on their machines, he said, “Yes, we do. Obviously in this case we didn’t do enough. The intent of loading this tool was to help enhance our users’ shopping experience. The feedback from users was that it wasn’t useful, and that’s why we turned it off. Our reputation is everything and our products are ultimately how we have our reputation.”

HEALTH WATCH: sweatthesweetstuff — Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring and that working out can be fun!

I want people to understand their bodies. To know that there is a connection between what we put in it and on it, and how that makes us feel. That eating right isn’t just about losing weight, it’s about how good we can feel! On the inside and out. It doesn’t stop at our dress size and energy levels (which are great) but it can help improve other things like your skin, hair & nails, achy joints, headaches, allergies, asthma, your menstrual cycle, IBS, indigestion, several diseases, even cancer. Your body is smart. It knows what to do. You just have to give it the right stuff.

C3TV – Freedom in your computer and in the net

For freedom in your own computer, the software must be free. For freedom on the internet, we must organize against surveillance, censorship, SaaSS and the war against sharing.

Macs Exodus

Apple has lost the functional high ground – Marco.org

Apple’s hardware today is amazing — it has never been better. But the software quality has fallen so much in the last few years that I’m deeply concerned for its future. I’m typing this on a computer whose existence I didn’t even think would be possible yet, but it runs an OS with embarrassing bugs and fundamental regressions. Just a few years ago, we would have relentlessly made fun of Windows users for these same bugs on their inferior OS, but we can’t talk anymore.

Geoff Wozniak went back to desktop Linux after almost a decade on OS X (Update: He appears to have taken the post down). It’s just one person’s story, but many of his cited reasons resonate widely. I suspect the biggest force keeping stories like this from being more common is that Windows is still worse overall and desktop Linux is still too much of a pain in the ass for most people. But it should be troubling if a lot of people are staying on your OS because everything else is worse, not necessarily because they love it.

Why I quit OS X – Curried lambda

After nearly 10 years of using OS X as my primary OS for personal work, I switched away in late 2014. I consider it to be the best tech decision I made last year.

Furthermore, I found that I had stopped using the majority of the primary apps that ship with OS X: Mail, Safari, iTunes, and Apple Creativity Apps/iLife. For the most part, I ran essentially three apps: Firefox, MailMate, and iTerm2. Most of my work was done in terminals. The culture of the operating system at this point was more about sharing than personal productivity.

In short, I was working against the grain of the environment. It was a gradual transition, but OS X went from a useful tool set to get my work done to an obnoxious ecosystem of which I no longer wanted to be a part.

More damning than the lack of personal connection, though, was the complete lack of transparency and general decline in software quality, as I perceived it.

At this point, my default position on Apple software in OS X has moved from “probably good” to “probably not OK”. They seem more interested in pumping out quantity by way of more upgrades. It’s death by a thousand cuts, but it’s death nonetheless.

I’ve gone back to a desktop system running Linux (for now) and while I consider it markedly inferior to OS X in terms of usability, it feels like a personal computer again. I’m enjoying the experience and I look forward to working with it, even when it’s a monumental pain in the ass.

Panic Blog » The 2014 Panic Report

This is the biggest problem we’ve been grappling with all year: we simply don’t make enough money from our iOS apps. We’re building apps that are, if I may say so, world-class and desktop-quality. They are packed with features, they look stunning, we offer excellent support for them, and development is constant. I’m deeply proud of our iOS apps. But… they’re hard to justify working on.

Headlines

PIE and ASLR in FreeBSD update

  • A status update for Shawn Webb’s ASLR and PIE work for FreeBSD
  • One major part of the code, position-independent executable support, has finally been merged into the -CURRENT tree
  • “FreeBSD has supported loading PIEs for a while now, but the applications in base weren’t compiled as PIEs. Given that ASLR is useless without PIE, getting base compiled with PIE support is a mandatory first step in proper ASLR support”
  • If you’re running -CURRENT, just add “WITH_PIE=1” to your /etc/src.conf and /etc/make.conf
  • The next step is working on the ASLR coding style and getting more developers to look through it
  • Shawn will also be at EuroBSDCon (in September) giving an updated version of his BSDCan talk about ASLR

Misc. pfSense news

  • Couple of pfSense news items this week, including some hardware news
  • Someone’s gotta test the pfSense hardware devices before they’re sold, which involves powering them all on at least once
  • To make that process faster, they’re building a controllable power board (and include some cool pics)
  • There will be more info on that device a bit later on
  • On Friday, June 27th, there will be another video session (for paying customers only…) about virtualized firewalls
  • pfSense University, a new paid training course, was also announced
  • A single two-day class costs $2000, ouch

ZFS stripe width

  • A new blog post from Matt Ahrens about ZFS stripe width
  • “The popularity of OpenZFS has spawned a great community of users, sysadmins, architects and developers, contributing a wealth of advice, tips and tricks, and rules of thumb on how to configure ZFS. In general, this is a great aspect of the ZFS community, but I’d like to take the opportunity to address one piece of misinformed advice”
  • Matt goes through different situations where you would set up your zpool differently, each with their own advantages and disadvantages
  • He covers best performance on random IOPS, best reliability, and best space efficiency use cases
  • It includes a lot of detail on each one, including graphs, and addresses some misconceptions about different RAID-Z levels’ overhead factor

FreeBSD 9.3-BETA3 released

  • The third BETA in the 9.3 release cycle is out, we’re slowly getting closer to the release
  • This is expected to be the final BETA, next will come the RCs
  • There have mostly just been small bug fixes since BETA2, but OpenSSL was also updated and the arc4random code was updated to match what’s in -CURRENT (but still isn’t using ChaCha20)
  • The FreeBSD foundation has a blog post about it too
  • There’s a list of changes between 9.2 and 9.3 as well, but we’ll be sure to cover it when the -RELEASE hits

News Roundup

My FreeBSD adventure

  • A Slackware user from the “linux questions” forum decides to try out BSD, and documents his initial impressions and findings
  • After ruling out PCBSD due to the demanding hardware requirements and NetBSD due to “politics” (whatever that means, his words) he decides to start off with FreeBSD 10, but also mentions trying OpenBSD later on
  • In his forum post, he covers the documentation (and how easy it makes it for a switcher), dual booting, packages vs ports, network configuration and some other little things
  • So far, he seems to really enjoy BSD and thinks that it makes a lot of sense compared to Linux
  • Might be an interesting, ongoing series we can follow up on later

Even more BSDCan trip reports

  • BSDCan may be over until next year, but trip reports are still pouring in
  • This time we have a summary from Li-Wen Hsu, who was paid for by the FreeBSD foundation
  • He’s part of the “Jenkins CI for FreeBSD” group and went to BSDCan mostly for that
  • Nice long post about all of his experiences at the event, definitely worth a read
  • He even talks about… the food

FreeBSD disk partitioning

  • For his latest book series on FreeBSD’s GEOM system, MWL asked the hackers mailing list for some clarification
  • This erupted into a very long discussion about fdisk vs gnop vs gpart
  • So you don’t have to read the tons of mailing list posts, he’s summarized the findings in a blog post
  • It covers MBR vs GPT, disk sector sizes and how to handle all of them with which tools

BSD Router Project version 1.51

  • A new version of the BSD Router Project has been released, 1.51
  • It’s now based on FreeBSD 10-STABLE instead of 10.0-RELEASE
  • Includes lots of bugfixes and small updates, as well as some patches from pfSense and elsewhere
  • Check the sourceforge page for the complete list of changes
  • The minimum disk size requirement has increased to 512MB

Underdog Syndrome

  • Recent discussions on LUP about switching
  • End of XP brings this to front of mind.
  • Ubuntu 14.04 this Sunday on LAS. The big dog on the desktop.

  • These smaller, boutique distros are great for experienced enthusiasts.

  • Sending users from the worlds most deployed desktop operating system to a niche distribution of a niche desktop operating system is a recipe for failure.

  • Support community is always smaller.
  • Random poorly crafted Google searches are less likely to show distro relevant results.
  • Long term viability of really small teams is always questionable. Larger distros even if corporate backers or the large community dropped it – the code would go on. Smaller distros that’s not always the case.

  • Do these concerns apply to the more esoteric desktops, ie Cinnamon, MATE?

Heartbleed Butt Hurt

A week after the Heartbleed OpenSSL vulnerability wreaked havoc across the web, the conversation is shifting from reaction to reflection. The discussion is no longer about what to do now, but what can be done to prevent another Heartbleed from happening in the future. In other words, we\’re entering the blame game chapter in this saga.

Everyone just assumed that OpenSSL must be perfectly safe because, well OpenSSL has a reputation for being safe, therefore it was safe. Developers, website developers, security experts, one and all, it seems no one ever thought to actually use those eyeballs that successful open source relies upon to check the code to see if it really was safe.

Open source does not provide a meaningful inherent security benefit for OpenSSL and it may actually discourage some important testing techniques. Also, panhandling is not a good business model for important software like OpenSSL.

Security experts acknowledge that open source is the best model for crypto, so how do we drive improvements to the model for creating security-critical infrastructure?

Workflow / Why Open-Source?

The Unix philosophy, originated by Ken Thompson, is a set of cultural norms and philosophical approaches to developing small yet capable software based on the experience of leading developers of the Unix operating system. The Unix philosophy emphasizes building short, simple, clear, modular, and extendable code that can be easily maintained and repurposed by developers other than its creators.

Xubuntu is perfect for those who want the most out of their desktops, laptops and netbooks with a modern look and enough features for efficient, daily usage. It works well on older hardware too.
