Ubuntu 16.04 Review Follow Up

Few things that were not mentioned in LAS:

  • new option to always show menu has been added
  • client side decoration is fully supported in Unity
  • Gnome Calendar is installed by default
  • Empathy has been removed similar to Brasero as not many people use desktop IM clients
  • Startup Disk Creator have been update, and actually works
  • Gnome Software has proper notifications (what Noah was saying has been fixed)
  • Music and Messaging menus are dynamic now, for example if you use VLC to play media only controls for that player show up
  • Unity now support 3rd party themes better
  • most software are set to optional, so you can uninstall a key software and it won’t break your system
  • The launcher, not only can you move it to the bottom, it also shows the icon of the application you launched to let the user know that it has been launched and is loading (for slower computers, this will help the user from accidentally launching it again)
  • Launcher now properly shows different instances of nautilus (i.e. USB CD, Trash, Downloads, etc. are shown separately and not all clumped into one icon of Files)
  • Gnome Software got comments and rating support

Follow Up Pt 2

Again, it’s the out-of-the-box experience on each of the desktop environments without any tweaking. There’s also some desktop environment developers that recommend running Linux games in their own X.Org Server, etc.

Daily Build of Gnome 16.04 using installation option to Erase Disk and Install fails with following message:
“The creation of swap space in Partition #5 of SCSi3(0,0,0) (sda) failed.

Microsoft to show Bash on Linux running on Windows 10

However, given the latest session leak, it seems that Bash on Ubuntu will figure in somehow. Bash is a Linux shell. It’s a set of add-ons and plug-ins that are a superset of the Bourne shell, and provide users with the ability to employ text commands to evoke specific actions (and/or to use scripts to do so).

Here come some games!

Fedora 24 Alpha released! – No Mainstream Wayland Distro in 2016?

We have decided not to make Wayland, the next generation graphic stack, the default in Fedora 24 Workstation. However, Wayland remains available as an option, and the Workstation team would greatly appreciate your help in testing. Our goal is one full release where the non-default Wayland option works seamlessly, or reasonably close thereto. At that point we will make Wayland the default with X11 as the fallback option.

Arch Linux – News: Required update to pacman-5.0.1 before 2016-04-23

In order for the use of hooks to be started, we require all users to have updated to at least pacman-5.0.1 before 2016-04-23. Pacman-5.0.1 was released on 2016-02-23, so this will have given everyone two months to update their system.

Stali distribution smashes assumptions about Linux

Stali’s project head, Anselm R. Garbe (a developer currently working at BMW, and creator of the DWM window manager), believes static linking works out better for most common use cases. The most obvious benefit is that static binaries have a smaller memory and on-disk footprint. Static binaries also claim to be faster, although there are no benchmarks as yet to show how Stali performs against other distributions.

For the last three months we have been waiting for the RPMFusion repositories to be declared stable before releasing Korora 23. These community packages provide support for things that Fedora doesn’t normally ship, like multi-media codecs and proprietary kernel drivers. Normally, the stable RPMFusion repositories are available a few weeks after a Fedora release, however the community has moved to new infrastructure and this has caused some delays.

Virgil 3D GPU project by virgil3d

The project entails creating a virtual 3D capable graphics card for virtual machines running inside qemu. The design of this card is based around the concepts of Gallium3D to make writing Mesa and (eventually) Direct3D drivers for it easy.

virtio-gpu is a driver for virtualization guests that allows to use the host graphics card efficiently. In this release, it allows the virtualization guest to use the capabilities of the host GPU to accelerate 3D rendering. In practice, this means that a virtualized linux guest can run a opengl game while using the GPU acceleration capabilities of the host, as show in this or this video. This also requires running QEMU 2.5.

Linux Solves Rubics Cube

The fastest time for a human to solve a Rubik’s cube is 4.9 seconds. This robot can do it in 1.019 seconds.

Software engineers Jay Flatland and Paul Rose built this piece of kit, which uses four webcams to determine the state of the jumbled cube. The information is then fed into a computer, using the Kociemba Rubik’s cube-solving algorithm to work out a set of moves to solve the puzzle. A set of small motors mounted in a 3D-printed frame then swivel the, presumably extremely well-oiled, Rubik’s cube.

The previous quickest time for a robot to solve the cube is 2.39 seconds, so it looks like this could be a record breaker; however, they’re still waiting for official verification from Guinness World Records.

Pretty impressive. Although some super slow-motion footage wouldn’t go amiss.

Install Asterisk and start building custom telephony applications with AsteriskNOW. AsteriskNOW makes it easy to create custom telephony solutions by automatically installing the “plumbing.” It’s a complete Linux distribution with Asterisk, the DAHDI driver framework, and, the FreePBX administrative GUI. Much of the complexity of Asterisk and Linux is handled by the installer, the yum package management utility and the administrative GUI. With AsteriskNOW, application developers and integrators can concentrate on building solutions, not maintaining the plumbing.

Lenovo PCs ship with man-in-the-middle adware that breaks HTTPS connections [Updated] | Ars Technica

Lenovo is selling computers that come preinstalled with adware that hijacks encrypted Web sessions and may make users vulnerable to HTTPS man-in-the-middle attacks that are trivial for attackers to carry out, security researchers said.

The critical threat is present on Lenovo PCs that have adware from a company called Superfish installed. As unsavory as many people find software that injects ads into Web pages, there’s something much more nefarious about the Superfish package. It installs a self-signed root HTTPS certificate that can intercept encrypted traffic for every website a user visits. When a user visits an HTTPS site, the site certificate is signed and controlled by Superfish and falsely represents itself as the official website certificate.

It’s not just Samsung TVs — lots of other gadgets are spying on you — Fusion

But Samsung’s televisions are far from the only seeing-and-listening devices coming into our lives. If we’re going to freak out about a Samsung TV that listens in on our living rooms, we should also be panicking about a number of other emergent gadgets that capture voice and visual data in many of the same ways.

Ubuntu on the Winbook TW700

I recently stopped by Houston’s new MicroCenter (they recently moved into a new store), and walked out of the store with their WinBook TW700 tablet for about $40. This tablet is built around Intel’s Bay Trail Atom architecture, sporting a 1.33GHz quad core Atom processor, Windows 8.1, and a free (1) year subscription to Office 365. This little tablet only has a 7″ screen, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage, but the Micro-SD slot and a full sized USB 2.0 port sealed the deal for me.

Our Runs Linux from HDR Photography on Linux | LAS s30e06 | January 19, 2014

  • Many large Commercial software vendors are transitioning to a subscription model. Does this create an even great lockin for schools?

  • One-to-One programs are very expensive, and the argument I’ve always heard was: Must use Windows, must use Office. Have get the kids ready for the “real world” that uses those tools. Is there a sound argument to that “concern”?

  • Linux and open source give students the ability to go very deep into how the computer works, if they are motivated and want to embrace their inquisitive nature. How far down the rabbit hole are your young Linux users permitted to go? How much can they explore?

  • Can you tell us how the Fast Linux Deployment Toolkit was created, and what it does?

  • What are some of the most useful open source software and tools you, or the students use?

  • What is the biggest road block others should expect?

Charlie Reisinger of Penn Manor gives talk at All Things Open 2014 | Opensource.com

Charlie Reisinger from the Penn Manor School District talked to us next about open source at his school. This talk was an expanded version of his lightning talk from the previous night.

Penn Manor has nine IT team members which is a very lean staff for 4500 devices. They also do a lot of their technology in house. But, before we talk about open source, Charlie took a tangent into the nature of education today. He says that school districts are so stuck on the model they’re using and have used for centuries, but today kids can learn anything they would like with a simple connection to the Internet. You can be connected to the most brilliant minds that you’d like, so teachers are no longer the fountains of all knowledge. A glaring gap in this evolution is that the classroom hasn’t been transformed by technology; if you walked into a classroom 60 years ago, it would look pretty much like a classroom today.

Enabling students in a digital age: Charlie Reisinger at TEDxLancaster – YouTube

Charlie Reisinger, an innovative IT Director for Penn Manor school district in Lancaster County, shows how to provide affordable, new digital technologies to high school students. The answer is not only a cost-effective way to improve the quality of education, it is opening students’ minds.

1:1 Laptop Program | PM Technology Blog

During the 2012-2013 school year, a committee comprised of faculty, administrators and a school board liaison worked to evaluate the viability of a district 1:1 computing program. After several months of internal discussion and public board presentations, a recommendation to proceed with a 1:1 laptop program at Penn Manor High School was unanimously approved at the April 1, 2013 school board meeting. The recommendation called for the program to commence with a pilot during the Fall of 2013. The full building implementation began in January 2014. At that time, each full-time high school student was provided with a personal laptop computer for use throughout the school day and at home.

Jolla Tablet – world’s first crowdsourced tablet | Indiegogo

Jolla’s Indiegogo campaign to build an open source iPad alternative — taking its Sailfish OS onto the tablet form factor — has passed its initial funding target of $380,000 with around 2,450 backers putting in cash. And it did so in double-quick time, taking just over two hours from the campaign’s launch. There’s still another 21 days left on the campaign so expect Jolla to flesh out some stretch goals.

Mostly a pitch for pre-orders right now, with the price-tag starting at $189 for the first 2,000 pledgers, and stepping up thereafter to $199 for another thousand backers.

EFF, Mozilla back new certificate authority that will offer free SSL certificates | PCWorld

A new organization supported by Mozilla, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and others is working to set up a new certificate authority (CA) that will provide website owners with free SSL/TLS certificates.

The new CA will be called Let’s Encrypt and is expected to become operational in the second quarter of next year. It will be run by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG), a new California public-benefit corporation.

The goal of this effort is to get as many people as possible to use the TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol—the more secure successor of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)—said Josh Aas, executive director of ISRG. Aas is also a senior technology strategist at Mozilla.

The new CA will not only provide certificates for free, but will also automate the certificate issuance, configuration and renewal processes in order to encourage widespread TLS adoption.

The goal is to make getting a certificate as easy as possible

Apple will soon let third-party products use its Lightning port, opening up new possibilities for accessories

Apple unveiled new Lightning connectors and specs for Lightning receptacles that will soon be available for implementation in MFi accessories. The new Lightning receptacle, scheduled to start shipping next year, will allow accessory makers to build new types of accessories that include a port for Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector previously reserved for its own iOS devices (pictured above).

The Lightning receptacle will arrive alongside a new Lightning connector (C68) that accessory makers say is a slimmed down, low profile version of previous implementations that can be used in a wide range of accessories from docks to form fitting cases. Apple has several variations of its Lightning connectors for use in accessories. The only one consumers ever see is the C48 connector (pictured right), which is only available for use in cables. For other accessories, however, Apple previously required a much bulkier solution than the C48 that paired with other components to provide more than just power to an accessory. The new connector will provide features other than just power in a much tighter package (around the same size as C48) than previous solutions. The result will be an easier implementation of Lightning connectors into accessories with a slimmer overall design, but no change for consumers in terms of compatibility since it’s just the housing and not the actual tip of the connector that is changing.

Apple plans to begin shipping the new Lightning connector and receptacle to accessory makers in early 2015.

Lumina Desktop Walkthrough with Ken Moore

System76

Brought to you by: System76

PC-BSD Is Developing Its Own Desktop Environment

The PC-BSD project is developing its own desktop environment from scratch! The ultimate plan is for Lumina to become a full-featured, open-source desktop environment that may ultimately replace KDE as its default desktop environment.

Lumina Desktop · GitHub

Lumina-DE is a lightweight, BSD licensed desktop environment designed specifically for use on FreeBSD (although it should be easily portable to other Unix-like OS’s as well).

PC-BSD 10.0.3 Preview: Lumina Desktop

Lumina/10.1 – PC-BSD Wiki

The Lumina Desktop Environment (Lumina for short) is a lightweight, XDG-compliant, BSD-licensed desktop environment that focuses specifically on streamlining the ability to get work done while minimizing system overhead. It is specifically designed for PC-BSD® and FreeBSD, but has also been ported to many other BSD and Linux operating systems. It is based on the Qt graphical toolkit and the Fluxbox window manager, and uses a small number of X utilities for various tasks, such as numlockx and xscreensaver.
Lumina’s features include:

  • Very little system overhead.
  • Intelligent “favorites” system for creating quick shortcuts to applications, files, and directories.
  • ZFS file restore functionality through the “Insight” file manager.
  • Desktop system is plugin-based, which is similar to Android or other modern operating systems.
  • Simple access to operating system-specific functionality such as screen brightness, audio volume, and battery status.

System Dashboard

The “System Dashboard” button is located at the far right of the panel.

This button provides quick access to hardware-specific information or operations, as supported by your operating system. The possible menu entries are:

  • A slider for changing the audio volume for the system from 0% to 100%. If the operating system provides a mixer utility, an icon will also appear. Click the icon to launch that mixer utility for advanced control of the audio system.

  • A slider for changing the screen brightness from 0% to 100%.

  • The current status of the battery, if your system has one, and the estimated time remaining if that battery is discharging.

  • A listing of the number of virtual workspaces that are in use, with buttons to switch between the different workspaces.

  • The log out button for ending the desktop session. When the log out button is clicked, a window of choices will be displayed in the middle of the screen. The choices include: Log Out, Restart (if the user has permission), Shutdown (if the user has permission), Cancel (to exit the choice menu), and Lock Screen.

  • Lumina/10.1 – PC-BSD Wiki

Right-Click Menu

If the user right-clicks on the desktop, a menu of quick shortcuts will appear for instant access and the title of the menu will indicate the name of the workspace. While this menu can be customized, here is a quick summary of the default items on the menu.

  • Terminal: used to launch a system terminal. The default is xterm, but this can be customized.

  • Browse System: launches the file manager. The default file manager, Insight, recommended, but this can be customized.

  • Applications: provides a drop-down menu of all the applications registered on the system, organized by category and name. Click an application to launch it. There are also a few shortcuts at the top of the application menu: one for opening the user’s home directory, one for launching the control panel, if the operating system provides one, and one for launching the graphical application installer, if the operating system provides one.

  • Desktop Settings: contains shortcuts to configuration utilities for the Lumina desktop environment, such as the control panel, if provided by the operating system, the screensaver configuration utility, the desktop configuration utility (lumina-config), and the Qt configuration utility (if installed).

  • Unlock/Lock Desktop: used to lock or unlock the desktop plugins. When unlocked, desktop plugins become “active” and can be moved, resized, or removed from the desktop. It is recommended to leave the desktop locked during normal operations.

  • Snap Plugins to Grid: this option only appears when the desktop is unlocked. Used to align and resize all the desktop plugins on an invisible 32×32 pixel grid, with special adjustments to align on the bottom and right screen edges if necesssary, in order to provide a uniform appearance.

  • Log Out: opens the system log out window, with options to shutdown/restart the system (if the user has permission), log out of the desktop session, lock the system, or cancel the log out window.

Lumina Configuration Utility

The Lumina Configuration utility allows the user to configure every aspect of the desktop and is the recommended way to make changes. To launch this utility right-click the desktop and select “Desktop Settings” → “Desktop” or type lumina-config from an xterm.

Insight File Manager

The Insight file manager allows the user to easily browse and modify files on the local system on a per-directory basis. To open Insight, right-click the desktop and select “Browse System” or type lumina-fm from an xterm.

It is possible to open up additional directories through the tab system (use “Ctrl-T” or click “File” → “New Tab”), allowing the user to easily manage multiple locations on the system. Insight also features the ability to “bookmark” locations on the system for instant access via the “star” button. Once a location has been bookmarked, it will be available via the “Bookmarks” menu at the top of the window. Any removable devices that are available on the system will show up in the “External Devices” menu, if supported by the operating system. When an item is selected, the options on the left side of the screen will show the possible actions that may be taken with regards to that item. Possible actions include: open, open with (will prompt for the application to use), add to favorites, rename, cut, copy, paste, and delete. By default, the actions buttons are visible. They can be made invisible by clicking “View” → “Show Action Buttons”.

A few additional options may be available at the bottom of the window, depending on the directory being viewed and the types of files that are in it:

  • New Dir: the ability to create a new directory will become available if the user has permission to modify the contents of the current directory.

  • Slideshow: if there are image files in the directory, there is an option to view those image files as a slideshow.

  • Play: will appear if there are supported multimedia files in the directory. The types of files that are supported depends on what multimedia plugins are installed on the system. If a particular file is not recognized as a multimedia file, install the associated multimedia codec using the operating system’s application management software and restart the file manager.

  • Backups: if the system is formatted with ZFS and snapshots of the current directory are available, this button will appear. Snapshots are organized from oldest to newest, with the most recent snapshot selected by default, and the contents of the directory at the time of that snapshot are displayed. To restore a file or multiple files, select them from the list and click the “Restore Selection” button. If those files still exist and you want to overwrite them, make sure the “Overwrite Existing Files” option is checked first. Otherwise, if a file with that name exists, the restore will append a number to the end of the filename. For example, the first restored version of testfile.txt will become testfile-1.txt.

Canonical Confirms Involvement in Ubuntu Linux Tablet

According to emails from Andrew Bernstein, who has emerged as the public face of the UT One tablet project, Canonical “certainly will be involved” in the production of the tablet, which will feature an Intel x86 processor.

  • Ubuntu Linux Tablet is Real, Pre-Orders Start Before the end of This Year

  • Operating System U by Andrew Bernstein — Kickstarter

  • The UT One runs Ubuntu Touch on a quad-core, Intel Atom Z3735D system-on-chip of the tablet-focused, 22nm Bay Trail-T generation, according to the Phoronix-reproduced UT One spec sheet.

  • The tablet’s SoC is said to run at 1.33GHz to 1.5GHz, and it’s accompanied by 2GB of DDR3L RAM, 16GB of storage, and a microSD slot.

  • The UT One’s 10.1-inch, IPS touchscreen is said to feature 1280 x 800-pixel resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The screen has 10-point capacitive touch with automatic calibration.

  • The 254 x 170 x 10mm, 636-gram tablet is further equipped with front- and rear-mounted 2-megapixel cameras, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and support for EVDO/WCDMA 3G cellular via a USB dongle, says Phoronix.

  • The tablet also offers a mini-HDMI port, a “USB 2.1″ port, a pair of speakers, and an audio jack. The 7900mAh battery is said to last up to eight hours and can be recharged via a DC port.

Major Performance Breakthrough Discovered For Intel’s Mesa Driver

The issue comes down to a difference in how hardware samplers were working compared to Intel’s Windows driver. LunarG passed along their findings to Intel’s Linux crew who with the help of their hardware engineers found a bit needed to make the hardware run faster.

Joey Hess Resigns From Debian, Unhappy With How It’s Changed

Joey Hess is now distancing himself from the Debian project as he resigns from his roles after being involved with Debian since 1996. In his parting remarks, Joey says his biggest regret over the past eighteen years is not speaking out against the Debian constitution.

Joey Hess played critical roles in the development of the Debian Installer, Alien, debhelper, and many other widely-used Debian components.

Not that it would be easy to ditch systemd. But there’s a lot of FUD
going around here about sysvinit support rotting because systemd is the
default, while the fact is that Debian fFreeBSD doesn’t have systemd at
all, and all the init scripts will be kept working for that reason if
nothing else. Also, the tech committe decision was that Debian continues
to support multiple inits to the best of our ability[2]. And, the init
scripts are a relatively miniscule portion of the code in Debian, and
don’t tend to bit rot much anyway[4].

So most of our concern about being locked into systemd is that desktop
environments are coming to require it, and that systemd-shim may be hard
to keep working in the long term. But desktop environments like Gnome
were already requiring systemd before Debian switched to it; Debian
cannot hold back the tide.

ownCloud Client 1.7.0 – A big update

ownCloud Client 1.7.0 is a big release. First and foremost, it supports
new features of ownCloud 7, for example the new sharing. ownCloud Client
1.7.0 now comes with overlay icons in the most popular file managers on
the supported platforms. The icons visualize the sync- and sharing state
of synced files on the desktop.

The second great new feature of ownCloud Client 1.7.0 is selective sync.
Within a sync folder, subtrees can be excluded from sync to the client.
That makes syncing of huge data sets easier to customize.

Apart from these two lighthouse improvements this version also brings a
significant amount of bigger and smaller improvements that make syncing
with ownCloud faster, more reliable and more enjoyable.

The Reports of Compiz’s death have been greatly exaggerated, 0.9.12.0 released

This is the first release of the Compiz 0.9.12 series. It consists of mostly smaller bugfixes, as befits a mature and stable project, but also some work to port the gtk-window-decorator to GTK+-3 to benefit some of the newer DEs. We have some wonderful and dedicated community contributors to thank for keeping this project going.

Edward Snowden Plans to Work on Privacy Tech

NSA leaker Edward Snowden says he plans to work on technology to preserve personal data privacy and called on programmers to join his efforts.

Speaking via a Google Hangout at the Hackers on Planet Earth Conference in New York

But today he hinted, without providing any further details, that he’s going to be doing some of that work himself. He also wants like-minded hackers to work with him in some capacity.

Forensic Expert Questions Covert ‘Backdoor’ Services Included in iOS by Apple – Mac Rumors

As part of a recent Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE/X) conference presentation, forensic scientist and iPhone jailbreak expert Jonathan Zdziarski detailed several backdoor security mechanisms that are secretly included in iOS by Apple.

Jonathan confirms that iOS is reasonably secure from attack by a malicious hacker, but notes that the mobile OS includes several forensic services and noticeable design omissions that make the OS vulnerable to snooping by forensic tools.

These services, such as “lockdownd,” “pcapd” and “mobile.file_relay,” can bypass encrypted backups to obtain data and can be utilized via USB, Wi-Fi and possibly cellular.

I am not suggesting some grand conspiracy; there are, however, some services running in iOS that shouldn’t be there, that were intentionally added by Apple as part of the firmware, and that bypass backup encryption while copying more of your personal data than ever should come off the phone for the average consumer.

Consumers who want to limit access to these backdoor services are advised by Jonathan to enable a complex passcode in iOS and use the enterprise Apple Configurator application to set Mobile Device Management (MDM) restrictions and enable Pair locking which will delete all pairing records. This solution will block third-party forensic software, but won’t protect the device contents if it is sent to Apple for analysis.

Google and Samsung’s relationship continues to worsen, this time over wearables

Samsung currently sells three smartwatches that run Tizen, including the Gear 2, Gear Neo, and Gear Fit. The company only offers one Android Wear-based smartwatch in the Gear Live. Google wants Samsung to focus its efforts more on Android Wear than Tizen

According to a new report out of The Information, the already tense relationship between Samsung and Google has begun to worsen thanks to both of their own lines of wearables. The report claims that Google CEO Larry Page and Samsung Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee took part in an a “tense” private meeting at the Allen & Co. conference last week in Sun Valley. The meeting reportedly centered around Page being frustrated that Samsung was investing more in its smartwatches running Tizen than the ones running Android Wear.

Report: Nvidia Shield Tablet ships July 29 in the US; $299 for 16GB Wi-Fi-only, $399 for 32GB with LTE, $59 for separate controller

On July 22nd NVIDIA will announce its own device, called SHIELD Tablet. It will be accompanied by wireless controller designed specifically for NVIDIA SHIELD family, meaning you will be able to control either SHIELD tablet or SHIELD console.

SHIELD tablet is 8 inch device with 1920×1200 resolution. It has 2GB RAM, Tegra K1 SoC with 192 CUDA cores, QuadCore 2.2 GHz A15 CPU. Tablet has dual speakers and 5 MPIX ‘selfie’ camera.

MicroXwin Creators Have A PC That Runs Debian & Android Together

The company behind MicroXwin, a kernel-based X Windows implementation that claims to be the smallest and fastest X implementation, has come up with a unified Linux distribution that runs Android and Debian/Ubuntu applications simultaneously.

  • This demo is running on a RK3066 dual core set top box. Some features of this implementation that your readers may be interested in knowing:

1. Both Android and Debian apps run at native speeds. Debian apps don’t depend on Android unlike other implementation of Debian on Android which are based on VNC running on Android.

2. We did not change Android to implement this (other than start-up scripts). This means we have full compatibility with all Android applications.

3. MicroXwin provides the X-Wndows framework and it is much faster as seen running on ARM based Raspberry Pi

It has its perks for big book buyers — namely that don’t have to worry about spending money on a book you end up hating.

But, chances are, you aren’t reading more than one book per month. In January, the Pew Internet and American Life Project asked how many books the typical American had read in the past year.

The answer? Five.

Linksys Launches New Wi-Fi Network Range Extenders

On Thursday, Linksys introduced three new additions to its family of wireless networking products: the Linksys AC1200 MAX Wi-Fi Range Extender (RE6500), the Linksys N600 PRO Wi-Fi Range Extender (RE4000W) and the Linksys N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender (RE3000W). Their prices are quite reasonable, costing $99.99 for the RE6500, $79.99 for the RE3000W and $59.99 for the RE4000W.

Prices Range from $59.99 – $99.99 USD.

The new Linksys AC1200 Max Wi-Fi Range Extender dishes out coverage of up to 10,000 square feet.

How I saved myself from a btrfs nightmare:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

We asked: Do you trust btrfs?

It really started about three weeks ago, when I was doing a big package upgrade. The upgrade installs started to fail reporting out of space.

df reported more than 30GBs free on / partition. Despite df’s optimized summarization of my situation I cleared my package cache, deleted some unneeded VMs , and about 20 Steam games that I had stashed in /opt.

Fast forward to this Friday and my system won’t boot. I knew it was a risk, but I was desperate. I decided to compress all the things. Based on my quick reading of a few wiki pages, I could compress files on demand but necessarily compress the entire file system all the time. IE compress a lot of crap small libraries, reduce the amount of blocks they take up, and free up some space.

btrfs has built in support for doing this. I have ran compression on my /home file system since day one of this install. I opt for LZO compression. The ration of compression is lower than other options, but the performance is fantastic. I set off compressing the messy areas of my / (like /var /usr/lib).

But after a sanity check reboot, and many errors about failing to find a file, it was clear my understanding was wrong, and the mount options in my /etc/fstab needed to be updated.

I dd’ed the latest Antergos ISO onto a USB 3.0 thumb drive and booted the Bonobo into the live environment, fired up gparted to remind my self which physical device my rootfs was on (hey it’s been over a year!) and then promptly created a mount point for it under /mnt/fix.

I jumped into my /mnt/fix folder and immediately was back at home on my Bonobo’s root file system. A quick nano (YES) of my /mnt/fix/etc/fstab file and I added the compress flag to my root file system’s mount options.

Unmounted and rebooted the Bonobo, and the 1+ year Arch install fired right up.

I then set off to figure out how to better use btrfs on my system, and specifically tune the file system for my SSD drives.

Why btrfs?

btrfs

“a new copy on write (CoW) filesystem for Linux aimed at implementing advanced features while focusing on fault tolerance, repair and easy administration.”

  • Early days still, but its getting a lot closer and I wanted to have some real time under my belt with it.
  • The features it brings to Linux are going to be seen as minimum requirements in the future. CoW, snapshot, checksum, volume management.
  • SSD (Flash storage) awareness (TRIM/Discard for reporting free blocks for reuse) and optimizations.
  • Background scrub process for finding and fixing errors on files with redundant copies.
  • Online file system defragmentation.

OSCON Speaker Benchmarks LZO compression

  • **Compression **with modern hardware (like SSDs, multi-core CPUs) is a serious solution. It not only offers more value out of your SSD drive, but because the disk has to read less data overall, and the CPU is generally just waiting for I/O you can actually see an improvement on transfer speeds.

  • btrfs Stability Status

The filesystem disk format is no longer unstable, and it’s not expected to change unless there are strong reasons to do so. If there is a format change, file systems with a unchanged format will continue to be mountable and usable by newer kernels.

It kept telling me my device was full, but I had 30GB free. btrfs balance to the rescue.

  • Package updates would fail, reporting no space left on device.
  • Checking my system with df -h clearly reported 30GB free on my /
  • Checking with btrfs filesystem df showed a different story.
  • I used ncdu to sniff out the biggest files I could delete or move to give me some emergency wiggle room.

Why the different DF?

  • General linux userspace tools such as df will inaccurately report free space on a Btrfs partition.
  • df does not take into account space allocated for and used by the metadata. It is recommended to use /usr/bin/btrfs to query a btrfs partition.

  • Run the btrfs command to get a sense of what it can do. You want to perform a filesystem function and show stats about a device.

btrfs filesystem df /

  • Also:

btrfs filesystem show /dev/sda3

So, in general, it is impossible to give an accurate estimate of the amount of free space on any btrfs filesystem. Yes, this sucks. If you have a really good idea for how to make it simple for users to understand how much space they’ve got left, please do let us know, but also please be aware that the finest minds in btrfs development have been thinking about this problem for at least a couple of years, and we haven’t found a simple solution yet.

Step 1: Rebalance, it’s not just for RAID arrays anymore!

Rebalance to realign the blocks on the disk

  • Balance does a defragmentation, but not on a file level rather on the block group level. It can move data from less used block groups to the remaining ones, eg. using the usage balance filter.

btrfs balance start / -v

In general usage, no. A full unfiltered balance typically takes a long time, and will rewrite huge amounts of data unnecessarily. You may wish to run a balance on metadata only (see Balance_Filters) if you find you have very large amounts of metadata space allocated but unused, but this should be a last resort. At some point, this kind of clean-up will be made an automatic background process.

Step 2: Defragment that disk

btrfs filesystem defragment -r -v /

  • Optional if you’re really hard pressed for space consider defragmenting the metadata too:

find / -xdev -type d -print -exec btrfs filesystem defragment ‘{}’ \;

Step 3: Compress that disk’s file system.

SSD Workload with LZO

What are the differences between compression methods?

There’s a speed/ratio trade-off:

  • ZLIB — slower, higher compression ratio (uses zlib level 3 setting, you can see the zlib level difference between 1 and 6 https://code.google.com/p/lz4/ here).
  • LZO — faster compression and decompression than zlib, worse compression ratio, designed to be fast

The differences depend on the actual data set and cannot be expressed by a single number or recommendation. Do your own benchmarks. LZO seems to give satisfying results for general use.

  • This is running another defragmentation pass. Yes this means two defragmentation runs. But if you’re really tight on space, you need to free some up first before you can compress. The system will need some temporary space while it writes compressed versions of the files.

btrfs filesystem defragment -r -v -clzo /

  • Important: Update your /etc/fstab to include compress=lzo. For example:

LABEL=rootfs / btrfs defaults,compress=lzo 0 1

Step 4: Optimize for SSD
  • Best results with Linux 3.14 and up
  • I have added these flags to my fstab mount for both my / and my /home

noatime,compress=lzo,ssd,discard,space_cache,autodefrag,inode_cache

Example:

LABEL=homefs /home btrfs defaults,compress=lzo,ssd,discard,space_cache,autodefrag,inode_cache 0 1

btrfs gotchas?

This page lists problems one might face when trying btrfs, some of these are not really bugs, but rather inconveniences about things not yet implemented, or yet undocumented design decisions.

NSA targets the privacy-conscious | Das Erste – Panorama – Meldungen

Xkeyscore

The investigation discloses the following:

  • Two servers in Germany – in Berlin and Nuremberg – are under surveillance by the NSA.
  • Merely searching the web for the privacy-enhancing software tools outlined in the XKeyscore rules causes the NSA to mark and track the IP address of the person doing the search. Not only are German privacy software users tracked, but the source code shows that privacy software users worldwide are tracked by the NSA.
  • Among the NSA’s targets is the Tor network funded primarily by the US government to aid democracy advocates in authoritarian states.
  • The XKeyscore rules reveal that the NSA tracks all connections to a server that hosts part of an anonymous email service at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It also records details about visits to a popular internet journal for Linux operating system users called “the Linux Journal – the Original Magazine of the Linux Community”, and calls it an “extremist forum”.
If you read Boing Boing, the NSA considers you a target for deep surveillance

What is XKEYSCORE?

Tor and Tails have been part of the mainstream discussion of online security, surveillance and privacy for years. It’s nothing short of bizarre to place people under suspicion for searching for these terms.

One expert suggested that the NSA’s intention here was to separate the sheep from the goats — to split the entire population of the Internet into “people who have the technical know-how to be private” and “people who don’t” and then capture all the communications from the first group.

Another expert said that s/he believed that this leak may come from a second source, not Edward Snowden, as s/he had not seen this in the original Snowden docs; and had seen other revelations that also appeared independent of the Snowden materials.

Schneier on Security: NSA Targets the Privacy-Conscious for Surveillance

Jake Appelbaum et. al, are reporting on XKEYSCORE selection rules that target users — and people who just visit the websites of — Tor, Tails, and other sites. This isn’t just metadata; this is “full take” content that’s stored forever.

Dear NSA, Privacy is a Fundamental Right, Not Reasonable Suspicion | Electronic Frontier Foundation

Even the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court recognizes this, as the FISA prohibits targeting people or conducting investigations based solely on activities protected by the First Amendment. Regardless of whether the NSA is relying on FISA to authorize this activity or conducting the spying overseas, it is deeply problematic.

Wayland in Fedora Update

So the summary is that while we expect to have a version of Wayland in Fedora Workstation 21 that will be able to run a fully functional desktop, there are some missing pieces we now know that will not make it. Which means that since we want to ship at least one Fedora release with a feature complete Wayland as an option before making it default, that means that Fedora Workstation 23 is the earliest Wayland can be the default.

The KDE Improv Project Has Announced Its End

Improv Board

Carl Symons on the behalf of Aaron Seigo and the rest of the Improv crew have sent out an email to the backers saying the project is over, they will issue partial refunds, etc. It’s only a partial refund right now as they had already invested some money into buying long lead times with their Chinese manufacturer.

There were also credit card processing fees, etc, but they’re working out a path for full reimbursement. It’s also said Aaron invested $200k USD into the project.

There was simply not enough support to make the project work, despite having fully functional, production ready devices and a strong commitment to succeed. The Free software community does not seem ready at this point to make a concerted stand on the pressing issue of hardware freedom

The group of folks behind the KDE desktop environment have been trying for a few years to deliver a tablet with wouldn’t rely on proprietary software. More recently they unveiled the Improv Board, a small, cheap computer module designed to ship with Mer Linux.

At this point, all the team is promising are partial refunds since part of the money has already been spent. But the goal is to eventually provide full refunds to folks who have put their faith (and money) into the project.

In a statement, the team suggests “the Free software community does not seem ready at this point to make a concerted stand on the pressing issue of hardware freedom,”
the Improv board was expected to sell for around $75

Ubuntu MATE Remix

Ubuntu MATE Edition

Objectives

The Ubuntu MATE Remix has the following primary goal:

  • Use Ubuntu to create a solid foundation on which to build a pure MATE desktop.

Ubuntu MATE Remix has some secondary objectives:

  • Increase both Ubuntu and MATE user adoption.
  • Restore the halcyon days of Ubuntu before indicators, Unity and scopes were introduced.
  • Be the go to Ubuntu alternative for computers that aren’t powerful enough to run a composited desktop, as well as those that are.
  • Make use of existing Ubuntu themes and artwork wherever possible so Ubuntu MATE Remix is immediately familiar.
  • When ever possible submit new or revised packages to Debian so both the Debian and Ubuntu communities benefit.
  • Package selection will favour functionality and stability over lightness and whimsy.
  • Provide a refuge for Linux users who prefer a traditional desktop experience.
  • Get adopted as an official Ubuntu “flavour”.

This Is Volantis, HTC’s Nine-Inch Nexus Tablet

According to our information, the tablet is internally referred to as the Nexus 9, though this name could change before it comes to market. Here’s what we’ve heard so far in the specs department:

  • 8.9″ Display at 2048×1440 (281ppi)
  • NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor (Tegra K1)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16/32GB internal storage
  • 8MP OIS main camera, 3MP front facing camera
  • Aluminum zero-gap construction
  • Stereo front-facing speakers
  • 8.91″x5.98″x0.31″ body (that’s 22.63×15.19×0.79cm)

Errata Security: 300k vulnerable to Heartbleed two months later

When the Heartbleed vulnerability was announced, we found 600k systems vulnerable. A month later, we found that half had been patched, and only 300k were vulnerable. Last night, now slightly over two months after Heartbleed, we scanned again, and found 300k (309,197) still vulnerable. This is done by simply scanning on port 443, I haven’t check other ports.

This indicates people have stopped even trying to patch.

Linux Note-taking App ‘Springseed’ 2.0 Refreshes

The open-source app is currently only available on Linux, offering users a minimalistic UI for writing, storing and categorising notes, thoughts, code snippets, and more. Notes can be synced between computers using the built-in Dropbox sync, though this isn’t required to use the app.

Version 2.0, the first stable update since February, refreshed the application’s UI with a darker, angular new look. The light colour scheme and custom window frames of version 1.1 have been replaced by a dark sidebar with large typography, native window borders and a boxier, flatter design with colourful accents in the edit window and high contrast icons.

Opera is back on Linux

As the Opera team said in a Monday blog post:

Many of us at Opera use Linux as our primary platform. It’s great to be able to try out the newest developments of Opera on Linux once again. Adding Linux to our browser line fulfils an important part of Opera’s vision to shape an open, connected world. We want everyone to have fast and safe access to the web. Adding Linux opens up that possibility to more machines running the open-source operating system.

Bitcoin is moving from its Deceptive phase to a very Disruptive phase.

A Greek-American engineer, physician, and entrepreneur best known for being the founder and chairman of the X PRIZE Foundation, the co-founder and chairman of Singularity University and the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think. He is also the former CEO and co-founder of the Zero-Gravity Corporation, the co-founder and vice chairman of Space Adventures Ltd., the founder and chairman of the Rocket Racing League, the co-founder of the International Space University, the co-founder of Planetary Resources, founder of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, and vice-chairman & co-founder of Human Longevity, Inc.

Bitcoin is moving from its Deceptive phase to a very Disruptive phase. This Blog is going to explain why, and what you may want to do.

I’ve been tracking Bitcoin since its inception, and my confidence has grown to the point where I’m now trading in a portion of my gold holdings for bitcoin, buying it and accepting bitcoin for the Abundance 360 CEO Summit.

If you’ve followed my work, or participated in my Abundance 360 Summit, you understand that I teach and track exponential technologies using my “6 D’s” approach, looking for “user interface moments.”

Bitcoin is following the 6Ds and is on a path to go from deceptive to disruptive over the next 1 – 3 years.

Why Bitcoin is following the 6 D’s

1. DIGITIZED: Bitcoin is digitized money — it is a global, purely digital currency. Every bitcoin is traded, earned, sold, exchanged and bought in cyberspace. For this reason, it is living on Moore’s law and hopping on the exponential curve.

2. DECEPTIVE: Bitcoin software was released to the public in 2009 and for the first few years has been growing in its deceptive phase. Few heard about it, few used it and accepted it. In addition, the currency has been hard to use; therefore, it hasn’t had its “User Interface Moment” (the key transition from deceptive to disruptive). More soon.

3. DISRUPTIVE: As described below by my friend Barry Silbert (founder of Second Market), Bitcoin is about to enter its disruptive phase where its rate of acceptance and use will explode, as will its value. See below.

4. DEMATERIALIZING: Bitcoin is eliminating or dematerializing the use of physical money (bills and coins), even credit cards. But more than that, it is also dematerializing (read: eliminating) the need for central banks, lawyers and currency exchanges.

5. DEMONETIZING: Bitcoin eliminates middlemen (banks, lawyers, exchanges) and demonetizes the cost of transactions. No fees. It makes it cheaper to use, spread and share money.

6. DEMOCRATIZING: Bitcoin makes access to capital available to everyone, where there are no banks, no ATMs and no credit card suppliers. Ultimately, as we move (over the next 6 years) to a world of 7 billion digitally connected humans, Bitcoin makes currency available to anyone with a connection to the internet.

Bitcoin’s Evolution – Why it will be Disruptive Soon

My friend Barry Silbert (founder of Second Market) recently spoke as my guest at Singularity University’s Exponential Finance conference about Bitcoin. He provided an excellent overview of its near-term trajectory, summarized below. His input has also put me on the lookout for the “User Interface Moment” – that moment in time when an entrepreneur designs a piece of interface software (think Marc Andreessen and Mosaic) that makes it so easy to use bitcoin.

I’ll be reporting on those user interfaces, investing in those startups and helping to promote them.

Okay, now back to Barry Silbert’s insights. Barry outlined five phases for this digital currency that help explain where it’s been and where it’s going.

Phase 1: The period 2009 to 2011 was the early ‘experimentation phase’ for bitcoin (i.e. deceptive). Here the software is released to public and most technologists and hackers started playing with the code. During this phase, there was no apparent value to currency yet; mining bitcoin was easy and could be done by a single person on a MacBook or PC.

Phase 2: 2011 marked the beginning of the ‘early adopter’ phase (still deceptive). There was a lot of early hype and press around Silk Road (where you could buy drugs). The value went from less than $1 to over $30, then crashed. This spurs the first generation of bitcoin companies to build basic infrastructure: wallets, merchant processors, mining operations, exchanges, etc. – i.e. the early user interfaces.

Phase 3: 2012 thru mid-2014 marked the beginning of the ‘Venture Capital Phase.’ Folks like Marc Andreessen, Google Ventures, Benchmark and others have begun investing in Generation 2 Bitcoin companies. We are right in the middle of Phase 3 right now. Thousands of bitcoin companies are getting funding. Many of these are trying to create the “User-Interface Moment.”

Phase 4: Fall 2014 thru 2015 will like see the start of the Wall Street Phase. Here we will begin to see institutional money acknowledging digital currencies as an asset class, and they will begin trading it, investing it and creating products around it. This marks the start of the disruptive phase.

Phase 5: Finally will come the ‘Mass Global Consumer Adoption’ phase — this is where bitcoin becomes a major player in the global economy. When consumers feel it is easy, safe and secure to use bitcoin. It won’t be possible until after the “User Interface Moment” materializes, but I believe, as does Barry, that this is only 1-2 years out.

Feedback:

As part of our Unity 4.3 announcement here at Unite \’13, we\’re thrilled to show off our native support for 2D development. Our users have been making 2D games for many years at this stage, and we felt it was about time we stepped up and acknowledged that fact, and brought native support for Sprites and related 2D workflows to Unity.

JavaScript Here to Stay? Or Near Death?

Today, JavaScript is no longer a startup, and it\’s no longer just startups that are using it. Companies of all sizes and levels of maturity build applications for the browser, and JavaScript is the language they use to build them. The demands that were once placed on languages like C/C++ and Java are now shifting to JavaScript, and that shift is exposing the language\’s limitations: performance and maintainability.

In 2008, however, Google released Chrome with its V8 JavaScript engine. Around the same time, Apple brought out Safari 4 with its Nitro (née Squirrelfish Extreme) engine. These engines brought something new to the world of JavaScript: high performance achieved through just-in-time (JIT) compilation. V8 and Nitro would convert JavaScript into pieces of executable code that the CPU could run directly, improving performance by a factor of three or more.

Android feels slower than iOS?

There are two core pieces to Android graphics: SurfaceFlinger and Skia. SurfaceFlinger is Android\’s compositor, used by the window manager to create and display windows (actually called surfaces.) SurfaceFlinger is implemented on top of OpenGL ES 1.x currently and can also use other hardware acceleration techniques when available (MDP, a 2D blitter on the T-Mobile G1, or hardware overlays on the Xoom.)

Each application renders into its windows (or surfaces) using primarily Skia. Skia is Android\’s 2D graphics library. You can also use OpenGL ES 1.x and 2.0 to render into a surface.

Android doesn\’t use DirectFB or X11 or any other existing Linux solution.

The presentation shows the design concepts about Android Graphics system including SurfaceFlinger, EGL, 2D accelerator, and Binder IPC.

Ouya\’s troubled state:

Overall it has been a frustrating process porting my game (still not done) that has taken much longer than I had hoped.

  • Upgraded to KDE 4.11 this AM before Coder Radio. Audio problems better?

The rate of games coming to Linux. I check for new games weekly now, and almost install two or three new games a week. This is amazing.

We need to track Steam better as a community. Each month the numbers come out we don\’t have any good visualization of how we are doing. Asymco for Apple for example.

Luna OS review Forgot:

  • Good desktop for developers. Ubuntu LTS compatibility/support with simple UI to let them focus.

  • App indicators work

  • In a couple years high end OEMs like System76 might move to Elementary OS if Ubuntu totally jumps the mobile shark

  • They plan to go w/Wayland, not Mir. Big diff from Ubuntu.

In the car industry, Formula 1 provides a commercial testbed for cutting-edge technologies. The Ubuntu Edge project aims to do the same for the mobile phone industry – to provide a low-volume, high-technology platform, crowdfunded by enthusiasts and mobile computing professionals. A pioneering project that accelerates the adoption of new technologies and drives them down into the mainstream.

Untangle

The ReactOS software includes binary and source distributions of the latest ReactOS. This includes the kernel, various subsystems and some basic applications.

Notes:

  • Installer looks straight outta NT4 / Win2k DOS days.

  • File system choices are FAT32 or ext2

  • In a future where ChromeOS and tablets are a viable platform for the majority of your computing, ReactOS could play the role of enabling legacy support for old Win32 apps. In a sense, further eliminating in shred of legitimacy the Windows platform could hold 7+ years out.
