Main Linux problems on the desktop, 2016 edition

In this regularly updated article, which is without doubt the most comprehensive list of Linux distributions’ problems on the entire Internet, we only discuss their main problems and deficiencies (which may be the reason why some people say Linux distros are not ready for the desktop) while everyone should keep in mind that there are areas where Linux has excelled other OSes: excellent package management, multiple platforms and architectures support out of the box, usually excellent stability, no widely circulating viruses or malware, complete system reinstallation is almost never required, besides Linux is extremely customizable, easily scripted and it’s free as in beer.

Again, let me reiterate it, this article is primarily about Linux distributions, however many issues listed below affect the Linux kernel as well.

Alien: Isolation has officially been released for Linux, and continues our trend of great AAA games. I would recommend playing this from behind a pillow, with emergency pants nearby.

Feedback:

This release, we focused on cleanup, polishing and quality-of-life
improvements, with over 400 issues fixed and dozens of new
translations. We have also gained two new frameworks: Solid, which
replaces liblxqt-mount and some custom power management code and
libkscreen, which replaces system xrandr calls and is wayland
forward-compatible.

The EPA says Volkswagen cheated on emissions testing again – YouTube

What route does someone who cares about this kinda stuff take. Do we just avoid all this stuff until its sorted out? I mean seriously, why not

The Volkswagen diesel crisis is an ongoing reminder of the dilemma that proprietary auto software and hardware is presenting for automakers and consumers. In September, VW disclosed that alleged “defeat devices” were installed in 2009-15 VW and Audi diesel cars. How was VW able to get away with this for so long? Because the automaker’s onboard software is protected against outside inspection.

But as shocking as Volkswagen’s fraud may be, it only heralds more of its kind. It’s time to address one of the most urgent if overlooked tech transparency issues—secret code in the criminal justice system. Today, closed, proprietary software can put you in prison or even on death row. And in most U.S. jurisdictions you still wouldn’t have the right to inspect it. In short, prosecutors have a Volkswagen problem.

Mr. Moglen, a lawyer, technologist and historian who founded the Software Freedom Law Center, has argued for decades that software ought to be transparent. That would best serve the public interest, he said in his 2010 speech.

“Software is in everything,” he said, citing airplanes, medical devices and cars, much of it proprietary and thus invisible. “We shouldn’t use it for purposes that could conceivably cause harm, like running personal computers, let alone should we use it for things like anti-lock brakes or throttle control in automobiles.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Moglen recalled the elevator in his hotel.

“Intelligent public policy, as we all have learned since the early 20th century, is to require elevators to be inspectable, and to require manufacturers of elevators to build them so they can be inspected,” he said. “If Volkswagen knew that every customer who buys a vehicle would have a right to read the source code of all the software in the vehicle, they would never even consider the cheat, because the certainty of getting caught would terrify them.”

But on Tuesday, the Library of Congress issued exemptions to DMCA that pleased many auto enthusiasts. In a ruling that also freed those who wish to modify tablets and smart TVs, the LOC said, more or less, monkey away.

KeePassX saves many different information e.g. user names, passwords, urls, attachments and comments in one single database. For a better management user-defined titles and icons can be specified for each single entry. Furthermore the entries are sorted in groups, which are customizable as well. The integrated search function allows to search in a single group or the complete database.
KeePassX offers a little utility for secure password generation. The password generator is very customizable, fast and easy to use. Especially someone who generates passwords frequently will appreciate this feature.

datto

The Datto Block Driver (Dattobd) solves the above problems. Dattobd is an open source Linux kernel module for point-in-time live snapshotting. Dattobd can be loaded onto a running Linux machine (without a reboot) and used to create an image file representing any block device at the instant the snapshot is taken. After the first snapshot, Dattobd tracks incremental changes to the block device and can therefore efficiently update existing backups by copying only the blocks that have changed.

A Week With GNOME As My Linux Desktop: What They Get Right & Wrong

Which brings up an important distinction between KDE and Gnome. Gnome feels like a product. It feels like a singular experience. When you use it, it feels like it is complete and that everything you need is at your fingertips. It feel’s like THE Linux desktop in the same way that Windows or OS X have THE desktop experience: what you need is there and it was all written by the same guys working on the same team towards the same goal.

  • I spent the first five days of my week logging into Gnome manually– not turning on automatic login. On night of the fifth day I got annoyed with having to login by hand and so I went into the User Manager and turned on automatic login. The next time I logged in I got a prompt: “Your keychain was not unlocked. Please enter your password to unlock your keychain.” That was when I realized something… Gnome had been automatically unlocking my keychain—my wallet in KDE speak– every time I logged in via GDM. It was only when I bypassed GDM’s login that Gnome had to step in and make me do it manually.
    • it was at that moment that I realized it was such a simple thing that made the desktop feel so much more like it was working WITH ME. When I log into KDE via SDDM? Before the splash screen is even finished loading there is a window popping up over top the splash animation– thereby disrupting the splash screen– prompting me to unlock my KDE wallet or GPG keyring.

    • Software Managers! Something that has seen a lot of push in recent years and will likely only see a bigger push in the months to come. Unfortunately, it’s another area where KDE was so close… and then fell on its face right at the finish line.

    • Gnome Software is probably my new favorite software center, minus one gripe which I will get to in a bit. Muon, I wanted to like you. I really did. But you are a design nightmare. When the VDG was drawing up plans for you (mockup below), you looked pretty slick.

    • Then someone got around to coding you and doing your actual UI, and I can only guess they were drunk while they did it.

  • Which brings up an important distinction between KDE and Gnome.

  • KDE doesn’t feel like cohesive experience. KDE doesn’t feel like it has a direction its moving in, it doesn’t feel like a full experience. KDE feels like its a bunch of pieces that are moving in a bunch of different directions, that just happen to have a shared toolkit beneath them.

  • I know the KDE developers know design matters, that is WHY the Visual Design Group exists, but it feels like they aren’t using the VDG to their fullest.

  • Will I still use Gnome after this week? Probably not, no. Gnome still trying to force a work flow on me that I don’t want to follow or abide by, I feel less productive when I’m using it because it doesn’t follow my paradigm.

openSUSE Follow Up

onelostuser writes:

I don’t get why Noah and Chris are puzzled by what SuSE and OpenSuSE intend to do. The new distro will be to SLE what CentOS is to RHEL.
There will be Tumbleweed, the bleeding edge, always rolling distro that will be in much better shape than Rawhide because OpenSuSE actually expects people to use it as a desktop OS as opposed to “it’s rawhide so it’s borked”.

Then there will be OpenSUSE 42, based on the SLE sources. People will be able to use it such as others do with CentOS and I would be amazed if OpenSuSE and SuSE don’t make it extremely easy to switch from 42 to the enterprise version where they can sell people support on a subscription basis.

To me, it looks like a very smart move.

Google crafts new Cardboard virtual reality headset – CNET

Google on Thursday detailed its newest virtual reality device, the second-generation Cardboard. The new version is an even simpler product than the initial device, taking only three steps to construct instead of 12, and it also fits larger phone sizes, including screens up to 6 inches.

Unlike virtual reality rivals that have created systems that cost hundreds of dollars, Google has been pushing an inexpensive product that essentially anyone could afford and build, opening up VR to a broader group of consumers.

The second-generation Cardboard also includes a change in a button to cardboard from the first generation’s magnet to make input functions work with all devices. It went on sale Thursday with partners, and Google will hand out the device to everyone at its I/O developer conference — where the product was unveiled — said Clay Bavor, vice president of product management.

Nautilus (Files) File Manager to Get a Major Update for GNOME 3.18

Looking at the changelog, we can notice a fix for some window focus issues that occurred when starting the file manager, a fix for the handling of the command-line options in certain cases, as well as the addition of a public API (Application Programming Interface) documentation for developers who want to create Nautilus extensions.

Fedora 22 Review Follow Up

We’ve come to the conclusion that the current design is unsupportable,
mostly due to upgrade.img, which turns out to cause more problems than
it solves.

So! For F23, fedup needs to be redesigned. Here’s how it should work:
1) Download packages for the new system
2) Use the systemd Offline Updates facility to install packages

This is really simple – simple enough that it should probably be
provided by the system packaging tools themselves.
As a proof-of-concept, I’ve implemented it as a DNF plugin, which you
can see here: https://github.com/wgwoods/dnf-plugin-fedup

Ubuntu jumps into Internet of Things with Acer, GE, and Microsoft

That wasn’t a typo. Canonical and Microsoft, which were already working together on bringing Canonical’s Juju DevOps tools to Windows and bringing Windows Server to OpenStack, are working with DataArt on an IoT industrial predictive maintenance solution. It will combine the three companies’ IoT, cloud, big data, machine learning, and Docker efforts. To integrate all of this they’ll be using “Snappy” Ubuntu apps, DeviceHive, and Juju Charms. Microsoft will also use an Azure service to manage and capture machine data.

Review Systemd is here. It’s arrived in Vivid Vervet, the latest, just-released distro of Ubuntu — 15.04.

Most users will notice very little overall difference in this latest Ubuntu release, but it’s this change that packs the biggest punch.

Wily Werewolf is the name of Ubuntu 15.10

“I think Ubuntu has come to represent the leanest, cleanest focus on free software and design for future experiences, and I think it’s time for us now to accelerate that lead. It’s really important for us to be sure that developers that are comfortable developing for GNOME or KDE know that their applications will absolutely be welcome in a converged Ubuntu world.”

“I would like to announce that we are going to ship a device this year, with a manufacturer, that will fit in your pocket, and be a phone, and will give you a desktop experience. That PC pocket experience is real on Ubuntu.”

Telegram – I was really surprised by the popularity of Telegram. I personally don’t know anyone who uses it, but it looks like it could be the new #1 IM service for open source enthusiasts as Jabber was in the last decade. It’s the only (at least a bit popular) modern IM service that is trying to be open and focused on privacy. It has a Linux desktop app written in Qt. You can find it in Copr although it’s not packaged very well and the app is missing an icon. I’m not sure how easy it would be for the package to make it into the official repositories. The website says they’re using slightly modified Qt which could make it difficult. There is also a plugin for Pidgin which doesn’t support advanced features, but works well for simple chat communication (again available in Copr). If we pick Pidgin as the default browser again, we should have this plugin pre-installed since Telegram seems to be becoming more and more popular.

On a certain episode of L.U.P Chris questioned how Ubuntu applications (made with the Ubuntu SDK) would look on non Ubuntu desktop environments, and quite rightly so came to the conclusion of “well, they would look out of place”. Fine.

Lets stop right now and talk about something else, Gnome “Apps”. Gnome Apps are fucking shit under anything that isn’t Gnome, however nobody is giving Gnome a hard time over this. Gnome is shitting all over everyone else with their poorly designed applications and the Ubuntu Desktop and other desktops are suffering because of it.

Holy cookies I did it..

I created a Jupiter Broadcasting Meetup group. I was inspired by the idea of how nice it would be to have a rough idea of how many folks will be making it out to LFNW. Just to help with planning.

But I realized my long-term plans are a bit more ambitious. As the weather gets nice in the Seattle area, I’d like to hold semi-frequent meetups with Jupiter Colony members that are in the area. Maybe once a month, record them, or stream them. Eat, chat, maybe even create show content.

Also as we travel to other fests, or hit the road, I’d like to have a tool to suss out interest in your area.

So after LFNW I’d like to use the group for that kind of stuff, which sounds like a lot of fun to me!

FOSDEM 2015

Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels.

systemd is now a core component of most major distributions. In this talk I want to give an overview over everything new in the systemd project over the last year, and what to expect over the next year.

Hopefully it clears up what we mean when we talk about systemd and desktop environments, and where we could use different parts of systemd.

It should be apparent that as developers there are parts we want to embrace as it. In many cases it allows us to throw away large amounts of code whilst at the same time providing a better user experience. Adding it as an optional extra defeats the main benefit.

Raspberry Pi 2 on sale now at $35 | Raspberry Pi

Let’s get the good stuff out of the way above the fold. Raspberry Pi 2 is now on sale for $35 (the same price as the existing Model B+), featuring:

  • A 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU (~6x performance)
  • 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM (2x memory)
  • Complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1

Because it has an ARMv7 processor, it can run the full range of ARM GNU/Linux distributions, including Snappy Ubuntu Core, as well as Microsoft Windows 10.

Speaking to The Register last week, foundation head honcho Eben Upton said: “I think it’s a usable PC now. It was always the case that you could use a Raspberry Pi 1 as a PC but you had to say ‘this is a great PC in so far as it cost me 35 bucks’. We’ve removed the caveat that you had to be a bit forgiving with it. Now it’s just good.”

Highly critical “Ghost” allowing code execution affects most Linux systems | Ars Technica

The vulnerability in the GNU C Library (glibc) represents a major Internet threat, in some ways comparable to the Heartbleed and Shellshock bugs that came to light last year. The bug, which is being dubbed “Ghost” by some researchers, has the common vulnerability and exposures designation of CVE-2015-0235. While a patch was issued two years ago, most Linux versions used in production systems remain unprotected at the moment. What’s more, patching systems requires core functions or the entire affected server to be rebooted, a requirement that may cause some systems to remain vulnerable for some time to come.

Mark Shuttleworth » Smart things powered by snappy Ubuntu Core on ARM and x86

Transactional updates. App store. A huge range of hardware. Branding for device manufacturers.

In this release of Ubuntu Core we’ve added a hardware abstraction layer where platform-specific kernels live. We’re working commercially with the major silicon providers to guarantee free updates to every device built on their chips and boards. We’ve added a web device manager (“webdm”) that handles first-boot and app store access through the web consistently on every device. And we’ve preserved perfect compatibility with the snappy images of Ubuntu Core available on every major cloud today. So you can start your kickstarter project with a VM on your favourite cloud and pick your processor when you’re ready to finalise the device.

Robots embrace Ubuntu as it invades the internet of things

“Snappy” Ubuntu Core came out of Canonical‘s mobile efforts (which are yet to go anywhere) and was made available on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and the Google Cloud Platform at the end of 2014. Now it’s available for smart devices, and Canonical has already got players such as the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), drone outfit Erle Robotics and connected hub maker NinjaBlocks on board.

Security problems need to be made public: Linus Torvalds

In the Q&A session at Linux.conf.au, Torvalds also said he is pleased that the Linux kernel played a part in making free software more approachable and open.

“I actually think one of the things that Linux has been really good at … and this is going to raise a few hackles. I like open source, and I like this whole working together with commercial companies, and this whole notion that you don’t need to vilify people who also do closed source,” he said.

“So, for me personally, one of the big things I’m happy about is that I was part of the group, who tried to take — and now, this is when Tridge will stand up and give the other answer — who tried to take this very us against the world approach of free software and made it more open, not just in name, but also acceptable to people who don’t necessarily believe in our values, but believe that our model is better and that’s, to me, something that Linux was really instrumental in.

“At the same time, I’m really happy about Git too, because I think Git has spread more than the kernel in some respects, and maybe I’ll be remembered more for Git than Linux. We’ll see.”

Amazon announces plans to make movies for theaters, Prime streaming

Amazon Studios is going to start making movies, and you’ll be seeing them in theaters before they become available for streaming on Prime.Fresh off Golden Globe wins for its original series Transparent, the company today announced it will produce and acquire full-length feature films for theatrical release. Amazon Original Movies, which “focus on unique stories, voices, and characters from top and up-and-coming creators,” will become available to US Prime subscribers just 4 to 8 weeks after they premiere in theaters — a shorter transition to streaming than you’d see from the major movie studios.

And Amazon’s not exactly starting small; it plans to produce up to 12 movies each year as part of the new initiative, and those efforts will kick off in earnest later this year. “Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience,” said Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios.

Report: NSA not only creates, but also hijacks, malware

One of the secret documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and published by Der Spiegel contains details about a covert NSA program called DEFIANTWARRIOR that’s used to hijack botnet computers and use them as “pervasive network analysis vantage points” and “throw-away non-attributable CNA [computer network attack] nodes.”

This means that if a user’s computer is infected by cybercriminals with some malware, the NSA might step in, deploy their own malware alongside it and then use that computer to attack other interesting targets. Those attacks couldn’t then be traced back to the NSA.

According to the leaked document, this is only done for foreign computers. Bots that are based in the U.S. are reported to the FBI Office of Victim Assistance.

Sometimes the NSA also uses the servers of unsuspecting third parties as scapegoats, Der Spiegel reported. When exfiltrating data from a compromised system, the data is sent to such servers, but it is then intercepted and collected en route though the NSA’s vast upstream surveillance network.

The 4 Best New Linux Distributions to Watch in 2015 | Linux.com

By Jack Wallen

Every year new Linux distributions pop up and promise something new and game changing. I believe this time around, the claims certainly have a chance of changing the way Linux is seen by a number of user groups. Whether you’re an average user, a gamer, a power user, or some hybrid user in need of a desktop to perfectly suit your needs, I believe 2015 will bring to light some projects that will be right up your alley.

Main Linux problems on the desktop, 2015 edition

In this regularly updated article, which is without doubt the most comprehensive list of Linux distributions’ problems on the entire Internet, we only discuss their main problems and deficiencies (which may be the reason why some people say Linux distros are not ready for the desktop) while everyone should keep in mind that there are areas where Linux has excelled other OSes: excellent package management, multiple platforms and architectures support out of the box, usually excellent stability, no widely circulating viruses or malware, complete system reinstallation is almost never required, besides Linux is extremely customizable, easily scripted and it’s free as a beer.

I want to make one thing crystal clear – Windows, in some regards, is even worse than Linux and it’s definitely not ready for the desktop either. Off the top of my head I want to name the following quite devastating issues with Windows:

  • devastating Windows rot
  • no enforced file system and registry hierarchy (I have yet to find a single serious application which can uninstall itself cleanly and fully)
  • svchost.exe
  • no true safe mode
  • no clean state
  • the user as a system administrator (thus viruses/malware – most users don’t and won’t understand UAC warnings)
  • no good packaging mechanism (MSI is a fragile abomination)
  • no system wide update mechanism (which includes third party software)
  • Windows is extremely difficult to debug
  • Windows boot problems are often fatal and unsolvable unless you reinstall from scratch
  • Windows is hardware dependent (especially when running from UEFI)
  • Windows updates are unreliable and they also waste disk space
  • there’s no way to cleanly upgrade your system (there will be thousands of leftovers), etc.
