Pepsi Is Testing Doritos-Flavored Mountain Dew, Which Means the End Is Near | E! Online

Reddit user pcmasterrace posted the above photo of a booth setup at his school with Pepsi employees handing out little cups filled with Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew.

Sharing Night-Time Photos Of The Eiffel Tower Is Illegal

Taking and sharing photos of the Eiffel tower at night is a copyright violation that could land you with a hefty fine (not that it’s stopped the selfie-snapping masses, of course).

Torrent Freak explains that although the building itself is in the public domain, the light show that illuminates it at night is an artistic work, and as such ‘reproducing’ it (i.e. snapping a photo) would require the permission of the artist. It’s the same law that stops you from filming a theatre show, just taken to a slightly absurd extreme.

vIt’s not just a theory, either: the website for the commercial use of the tower confirms that “the usage of these images is subject to prior request from the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel.”

Google Drive now lets you open files in compatible Mac & PC apps w/ new Chrome extension | 9to5Google

Google announced today that it’s releasing a new Chrome extension called Application Launcher for Drive that allows users to open files directly from its Google Drive service in compatible apps on a Mac or PC. The extension adds an “Open With” option that will let users launch files in apps like, for example, Mac OS X’s Preview app or third-party editing apps like those from Adobe and Microsoft.

Users can enable the feature by installing the new Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store and making sure files are synced using the latest version of the Drive app for Mac or PC. You’ll then be able to see compatible apps by right-clicking files and selecting “Open With” in Drive (as pictured above).

Researchers Discover New ‘WireLurker’ Malware Affecting Macs and iOS Devices in China – Mac Rumors

Researchers from Palo Alto Networks (via The New York Times) have published a research paper on WireLurker, a malware new family that’s been infecting both Mac OS and iOS systems over the course of the past six months. The researchers say that WireLurker, which is targeting users in China, “heralds a new era in malware attacking Apple’s desktop and mobile platforms.”

The WireLurker malware is the “biggest in scale” in the trojanized malware family, and it is able to attack iOS devices through OS X using USB. It’s said to be able to infect iOS applications similar to a traditional virus, and it is the first malware capable of installing third-party applications on non-jailbroken iOS devices “through enterprise provisioning.”

Thus far, WireLurker has been used in 467 OS X apps in the Maiyadi App Store, which is a third-party Mac app store in China. The apps have been downloaded 356,104 times, infecting hundreds of thousands of users.

According to the researchers, WireLurker looks for iOS devices connected via USB to an infected Mac, installing malicious third-party applications onto the device even without a jailbreak.

Once installed, WireLurker can collect information from iOS devices like contacts and iMessages, and it’s able to request updates from attackers. It’s said to be under “active development” with an unclear “ultimate goal.”

Former NSA lawyer: the cyberwar is between tech firms and the US government | Technology | The Guardian

Former NSA general counsel Stewart Baker said on Tuesday.

Speaking at Web Summit in Dublin, Baker claimed that moves by Google and Apple and others to encrypt user data was more hostile to western intelligence gathering than to surveillance by China or Russia.

“The state department has funded some of these tools, such as Tor, which has been used in Arab Spring revolutions or to get past the Chinese firewall, but these crypto wars are mainly being fought between the American government and American companies,” he said, in conversation with Guardian special projects editor James Ball.

Baker said encrypting user data had been a bad business model for Blackberry, which has had to dramatically downsize its business and refocus on business customers. “Blackberry pioneered the same business model that Google and Apple are doing now – that has not ended well for Blackberry,” said Baker.

OnePlus One sales numbers: 500,000 smartphones sold to date, stretch goal of 1 million by year’s end | 9to5Google

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei confirmed to Forbes that OnePlus One smartphone sales have eclipsed the 500,000 mark to date, adding that the Chinese company has a lofty goal of selling 1 million units by the end of the year.

Forbes claims that OnePlus has achieved half a million sales of its flagship One device, which has been available on an invite-only basis since April, with an advertising budget of just $300. That small figure was allocated towards OnePlus experimenting with Facebook advertising.

Models go for $299 and $349.

OnePlus has been able to sell its flagship One smartphone for so cheap because it is only barely profiting off each handset sold. “We’re making a single-figure dollar amount on each phone,” Pei told Forbes. “That’s not the way we’re going to make money in the future, it’s just to keep the operation going.”

Microsoft Changes Tack, Making Office Suite Free on Mobile

“We’d like to dramatically increase the number of people trying Office,” John Case, corporate vice president of Office marketing at Microsoft, said about the new offering. “This is about widening the funnel.”

Microsoft says it has more than 7 million consumers subscribing to Office 365. It says there have been more than 40 million downloads of its Office apps for the iPad. In its most recent quarter, which ended Sept. 30, Microsoft said its consumer Office revenue grew 7 percent.

By making an unabridged version of Office available for free on mobile, Microsoft is betting it can get even more people to start using the software, without stealing sales from the PC and Mac versions of the product, where it still makes truckloads of money.

Naked celebrity hack: security experts focus on iCloud backup theory | The Guardian

Over the weekend, hundreds of nude photos of celebrities were leaked on 4chan before spreading to multiple Internet sites, with one of the involved hackers pointing towards iCloud as the source of the material.

One theory gaining ground is that many of the pictures had been accumulated by one hacker over a period of time – and were then “popped” by another hacker who somehow broke into a machine belonging to the first. Lending weight to that was that one of the earliest photos found in a cache released online dated to December 2011, while the most recent was from 14 August.

Some have also pointed to the presence of a Dropbox tutorial file in one hacked account as suggesting that the third-party cloud storage service was a source of some pictures.

Apple said Monday it was “actively investigating” the violation of several of its iCloud accounts, in which revealing photos and videos of prominent Hollywood actresses were taken and posted all over the Web.

FBI investigating alleged iCloud celebrity hack as Reddit ‘suspect’ declares innocence

[The FBI is] aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter. Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time.

Reddit sleuths, meantime, accused Southern Digital Media sysadmin Brian F Hamade of being the man who leaked the photos. This was based on the same drive names appearing on a screenshot posted by the leaker and ones on an old Reddit post by Hamade.

XhcPl6g

Hamade has this morning denied the claims in an interview with Buzzfeed, claiming that he did post the screenshot but that it was Photoshopped.

AnandTech Publisher Anand Shimpi Headed to Apple | Re/code

Anand Lal Shimpi, the editor and publisher of the well-regarded AnandTech site, is going to work at Apple.

An Apple rep confirmed that the company was hiring Shimpi, but wouldn’t provide any other details.

Last night, via a post on the site he founded in 1997, Shimpi said he was “officially retiring from the tech publishing world,” but didn’t say what he was doing next. “I won’t stay idle forever. There are a bunch of challenges out there :)”, he wrote.

AnandTech will continue publishing, and would be run by new editor in chief Ryan Smith.

China gives Microsoft 20 days to provide explanation in anti-trust probe | Reuters

A Chinese anti-trust regulator said on Monday it has given Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) 20 days to reply to queries on the compatibility of its Windows operating system and Office software suite amid a probe into the world’s largest software company.

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) questioned Microsoft Vice President David Chen and gave the company a deadline to make an explanation, the agency said in a short statement on its website.

According to a state media report on Monday, Microsoft’s use of verification codes also spurred complaints from Chinese companies. Their use “may have violated China’s anti-monopoly law”, the official Xinhua news agency said on Monday.

Microsoft refuses to comply after judge revives overseas data search warrant | ZDNet

A US judge has lifted a stay on a ruling, forcing Microsoft to hand over data it stores overseas. But the software giant said it will not comply, pending an appeal.

The government says that the order is not appealable at this stage, and Preska agrees. The Friday order says that the contempt order would be subject to appellate review. This disagreement over the path to appeal is, says the order, “the subject of hot dispute.”

Docker closes in on funding round of over $40 million

Docker, the container management startup that’s caught a __whole lot of buzz __in the enterprise tech industry, is finalizing a significant funding round worth between $40 million to $75 million, according to two sources familiar with the situation. The company is said to be valued at roughly $400 million, these sources said, but the deal is still a few weeks away from being completed.

This past January, Docker landed $15 million in a Series B investment round, bringing the company’s then total amount of funding to $26 million.

Twitch implements YouTube-like system for blocking copyrighted audio | Polygon

In an announcement, Twitch says it has partnered with software company Audible Magic, which works with the music industry, “to scan past and future [videos-on-demand] for music owned or controlled by” its clients. If that scan identifies a recorded video that infringes upon a copyright claim, the video’s audio will be muted for a 30-minute block in which that song appears.

The practice only applies to pre-recorded video on demand, Twitch says. The company won’t be scanning live broadcasts, nor will it automatically take content down.

China anti-trust regulator conducts new raids on Microsoft, Accenture

A Chinese anti-trust regulator conducted new raids on Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and partner in China Accenture PLC (ACN.N), the agency said on its website on Wednesday, after saying last week Microsoft is under investigation for anti-trust violations.

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) raided offices in Beijing and three other cities.

Microsoft has been suspected of violating China’s anti-monopoly law since June last year in relation to problems with compatibility, bundling and document authentication for its Windows operating system and Microsoft Office software, the SAIC said last week.

China is intensifying efforts to bring companies into compliance with an anti-monopoly law enacted in 2008, having in recent years taken aim at industries as varied as milk powder and jewelry.

Microsoft’s Windows ‘Threshold’ expected to add virtual desktops, drop charms | ZDNet

First up, as reported by Brad Sams at Neowin.net, Microsoft is moving toward adding virtual desktops to Threshold, the Windows release expected in the spring of 2015.

The other UI change coming to Threshold is the elimination of the Charms Bar, as first reported by Winbeta.org.

Existing “modern” Windows 8 apps will get title bars that include menus that have the charms components listed.

Microsoft tip leads to child porn arrest in Pennsylvania

A tip-off from Microsoft has led to the arrest of a man in Pennsylvania who has been charged with receiving and sharing child abuse images.

It flagged the matter after discovering that an image involving a young girl had been allegedly saved to the man’s OneDrive cloud storage account.

Microsoft’s terms and conditions for its US users explicitly state that it has the right to deploy “automated technologies to detect child pornography or abusive behavior that might harm the system, our customers, or others”.

Following the most recent case, Mark Lamb from the company’s Digital Crimes Unit released a statement.

“Child pornography violates the law as well as our terms of service, which makes clear that we use automated technologies to detect abusive behaviour that may harm our customers or others,” he wrote.

“In 2009, we helped develop PhotoDNA, a technology to disrupt the spread of exploitative images of children, which we report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as required by law.”

PhotoDNA creates a unique signature for each image, similar to a fingerprint, to help pictures be matched.

This is done by converting the picture into black-and-white, resizing it and breaking it into a grid. Each grid cell is then analysed to create a histogram describing how the colours change in intensity within it, and the information obtained becomes its “DNA”.

Google also uses PhotoDNA, alongside its own in-house technologies, to detect child abuse images. In addition, the software is used by Facebook and Twitter, among others.

Best Easy BBQ Chicken

The Night Before:
  • Combine vegetable stock, salt, water and ice in something large enough to hold your chicken, like a cooler with some room to spare (for more ice if needed for ex).
  • Place the thawed chicken (with innards removed) breast side down in brine.
  • Refrigerate or set in cool area (with ice) for 8 to 16 hours. Turn once if you can half way. No bigs.
Cookin:

Prep that bird:

  • Take that bird out of the brine, rinse it, and pat it down dry. With some paper towls.
  • Put that bird on the Beer butt holder / “poultry holder”.
  • Flavor that bird.
  • Oil that bird. I like to use Garlic oil, or butter, or bacon grease.

Prep the BBQ

  • Start your coals if you use those. I have a link to a great stater below.
  • Really don’t use lighter fluid.
  • Spread the coals out evenly.

Cook that bird

(length of cook time we vary depending on bird size)

  • Cover that bird in a foil dome. Make it legit tight, the steam trapped in there is our helper.
  • Do this before you put it on the BBQ, its hard and HURTS if you do it while its sitting on top of fire.
  • Try to hold the BBQ around 400F. Don’t stress it too much, that’s our target area.
  • Cook until clear juices are noticeable, and it smells cooked. If you have a probe you are shooting for 165F – 175F. Or if you can pull a leg off with little effort.

Senate Panel Passes Cybersecurity Bill Despite NSA Fears

The Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act, advanced in a 12-3 vote, would make it easier for businesses and the government to share information with each other about cyberattacks. Business groups argue that legal barriers are preventing them from getting the information they need to stop hackers.

But the privacy groups are still worried that the legislation could encourage a company such as Google to turn over vast batches of emails or other private data to the government. The information would go first to the Homeland Security Department, but could then be shared with the NSA or other intelligence agencies.

“Instead of reining in NSA surveillance, the bill would facilitate a vast flow of private communications data to the NSA,” the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for Democracy and Technology, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and dozens of other privacy groups wrote in a letter to senators last month.

Exclusive: Samsung’s virtual reality headset will be called Gear VR, launch at IFA 2014 | SamMobile

A month ago, Engadget exclusively reported on Samsung’s upcoming VR device, which is being developed in collaboration with Facebook’s Oculus VR. Today, we can confirm that Samsung is indeed working on a virtual reality device, and it’s called the “Gear VR”. Samsung will be announcing the device, alongside the Galaxy Note 4, at IFA 2014.

Instead of making a completely standalone virtual reality headset, Samsung has developed a modular design, which allows the user to dock in a Galaxy device into the Gear VR using USB 3.0. Virtual reality effect is achieved through head tracking, and instead of equipping the headset with sensors, Gear VR makes use of the smartphone’s accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power to track head motion.

You might say that this is exactly like Google’s Cardboard VR headset, which was handed out to I/O 14 attendees, and you would be right! The main concept behind Gear VR is the same. However, the Gear VR is much more comfortable to wear, thanks to the elastic head band and soft padded cushions on each side of the device, and Samsung’s implementation is also much better than that of Google’s Cardboard.

The hardware of the device is being developed by Samsung alone, but the software is being developed in cooperation with Oculus VR

Potato Salad by Zack Danger Brown — Kickstarter

Last week, Zack Brown posted a Kickstarter page titled simply “Potato Salad.”

“I’m making potato salad,” Brown wrote. Then, in case anybody was confused or skeptical or more inclined to support the preparation of a German-style potato salad than a mayo-heavy American version, he clarified: “Basically I’m just making potato salad. I haven’t decided what kind yet.”

His goal: $10.
