KDevelop for Windows: Official 5.0.1 beta installer available now | KDevelop

Today, we are happy to announce the availability of the first official KDevelop installer for Microsoft Windows. The installer is for the stable KDevelop 5.0.1 release, but we still release it as a beta, since there might be Windows-specific issues.

We primarily support C/C++ development, but also have great plugins for Python and PHP development (shipped in the Windows installer by default).

KDevelop itself is based on a plugin-based architecture where language support as such is just yet another plugin. There are other plugins (cppcheck, clang-tidy, etc.) not distributed on Windows (yet).

Atom Shell

Ozon OS “Hydrogen” beta ships with four GNOME Shell extensions installed by default: Atom Dock, Atom Launcher, Atom Panel and of course, User Themes so Ozon OS can use its cool GNOME Shell theme out of the box.

Atom Dock is, like its name suggest, a “dock” or application launcher/switcher, that’s displayed at the bottom of the screen and uses intellihide by default (it hides if it overlaps any window in the active window group, but it can be brought up using the mouse pointer). Just like the default GNOME Shell Dash (which is disabled in Ozon OS), you can pin applications to the dock, open a new application window and access the application view

Steam hits 1,000 Linux games days after Valve’s big Steam Machine reveal

At the moment, there are 1005 games that support Linux and SteamOS on Steam. That’s out of 4817 total games for all platforms on Steam, or 20.8% of all the games on Steam. And that’s just games—not DLC items, software, demos, or trailers. But, if you expand the search to include everything, there’s 1856 items in the Linux + SteamOS category.

Google Open Source Blog: Bidding farewell to Google Code

Beginning today, we have disabled new project creation on Google Code. We will be shutting down the service about 10 months from now on January 25th, 2016.

The Linux Foundation wants to rein in its insult-spewing leader

On Monday, the Linux Foundation kinda sorta slapped him on the wrist when they issued a new “Code of Conflict” policy that declared “personal insults or abuse are not welcome.”

• Linux kernel patch releases “code of conduct”

Some would say that the center of the problem is Linus Torvalds himself, that his blunt and cavalier attitude towards dealing with other developers has lead to too much tension within the ranks. However, when one man holds such a massive responsibility for that much code (and the patches submitted therein), it only makes sense that he carry a sharp stick and tone. The problem comes when contributors begin calling out Torvalds publicly. This happened recently when Lennart Poettering called Torvalds out for encouraging hate speech and attacks. Poettering went so far to say that the Linux community is a “sick place to be in.”

Whether this tactic pans out to solve the growing friction within the Linux kernel commuinity remains to be seen. This kind of effort tends to shift power from the individual to those who enforce the code, according to Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group.

NTP’s Fate Hinges On “Father Time”

In April, one of the open source code movement’s first and biggest success stories, the Network Time Protocol, will reach a decision point, writes Charlie Babcock. At 30 years old, will NTP continue as the preeminent time synchronization system for Macs, Windows, and Linux computers and most servers on networks? Or will this protocol go into a decline marked by drastically slowed development, fewer bug fixes, and greater security risks for the computers that use it? The question hinges to a surprising degree on the personal finances of a 59-year-old technologist in Talent, Ore., named Harlan Stenn.

Microsoft and Adobe release flood of critical patches

• “Microsoft: eight bulletins, two critical – addressing 13 issues in Internet Explorer and Sharepoint Server, along with Windows, Office and its .NET Framework”
• The first critical issue that involves IE MS14-029 we’re learning about for the first time today. Researchers with Google’s Security Team have already spotted limited instances of one of the vulnerabilities (CVE-2014-1815) being targeted, which means this should probably be No. 1 on users’ patching agendas.
• The batch of patches also includes a second critical security update for IE MS14-021 that addresses a previously disclosed vulnerability in versions 6 through 11 of the browser.
• “Missing from the updates are patches for vulnerabilities dug up at March’s Pwn2Own hacking competition, including three IE vulnerabilities that bypassed sandboxes and compromised the underlying system”
• “In a blog entry yesterday the company pointed out that it has extended its requirement for consumer customers to update to 8.1 from today until June 10 but that after that date, like it promised, those who haven’t updated will not receive security updates.”
• “Adobe: released two updates today, fixing critical issues in Reader and Acrobat XI (11.0.06), Strung together the wrong way, they could cause a crash and potentially let an attacker take control of an affected system.”
• “Along with a surprise Flash issue. The Flash Player update involves version 13.0.0.206 of the software and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh and Linux. The issues were not previously made clear in a security bulletin but address vulnerabilities discovered by Keen Team and other researchers that could result in arbitrary code execution and ultimately let an attacker take control of the affected system.”
• Adobe also released a minor security hotfix for Adobe Illustrator CS6 today, fixing a stack overflow vulnerability – something also marked critical by the company – that could lead to remote code execution.

Open Source Android fork Replicant finds and closes backdoor

• While working on Replicant, a fully free/libre version of Android, they discovered that the proprietary program running on the applications processor in charge of handling the communication protocol with the modem actually implements a backdoor that lets the modem perform remote file I/O operations on the file system.
• This program is shipped with the Samsung Galaxy devices and makes it possible for the modem to read, write, and delete files on the phone\’s storage. On several phone models, this program runs with sufficient rights to access and modify the user\’s personal data.
• Today\’s phones come with two separate processors: one is a general-purpose applications processor that runs the main operating system, e.g. Android; the other, known as the modem, baseband, or radio, is in charge of communications with the mobile telephony network.
• These systems are known to have backdoors that make it possible to remotely convert the modem into a remote spying device. The spying can involve activating the device\’s microphone, but it could also use the precise GPS location of the device and access the camera, as well as the user data stored on the phone. Moreover, modems are connected most of the time to the operator\’s network, making the backdoors nearly always accessible.
• A technical description of the issue, as well as the list of known affected devices is available at the Replicant wiki.

Heartbleed certificate regeneration done wrong in large number of cases

• Netcraft did a survey of SSL certificates to see how Heartbleed affected SSL certificates
• There are 3 required steps to properly replace the SSL certificate
  • Generate a new private key
  • Get issued a new certificate with the new key
  • Revoke the old certificate so it can no longer be used
• They found that 43% of certificates had been reissued
• However they found that only 20% of certificates had been revoked (meaning 23% replaced their certificate but did not revoke the old one, so the old one can still be used by an attacker to perform a man-in-the-middle attack)
• Worse, they found that 7% of certificates had been reissued with the SAME private key, meaning if the private key was stolen, the new certificate is compromised as well
• So in total, only 14% of sites had taken all three steps required to replace their possibly compromised certificates

OpenSSL, more like OpenSS-Hell

• We mentioned this huge OpenSSL bug last week during all the chaos, but the aftermath is just as messy
• There\’s been a pretty vicious response from security experts all across the internet and in all of the BSD projects – and rightfully so
• We finally have a timeline of events
• Reactions from ISC, PCBSD, Tarsnap, the Tor project, FreeBSD, NetBSD, oss-sec, PHK, Varnish and Akamai
• pfSense released a new version to fix it
• OpenBSD disabled heartbeat entirely and is very unforgiving of the IETF
• Ted Unangst has two good write-ups about the issue and how horrible the OpenSSL codebase is
• A nice quote from one of the OpenBSD lists: \”Given how trivial one-liner fixes such as #2569 have remained unfixed for 2.5+ years, one can only assume that OpenSSL\’s bug tracker is only used to park bugs, not fix them\”
• Sounds like someone else was having fun with the bug for a while too
• There\’s also another OpenSSL bug that\’s possibly worse that OpenBSD patched – it allows an attacker to inject data from one connection into another
• OpenBSD has also imported the most current version of OpenSSL and are ripping it apart from the inside out – we\’re seeing a fork in real time (over 55000 lines of code removed as of yesterday evening)

FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE is out

• The long awaited, giant release of FreeBSD is now official and ready to be downloaded
• One of the biggest releases in FreeBSD history, with tons of new updates
• Some features include: LDNS/Unbound replacing BIND, Clang by default (no GCC anymore), native Raspberry Pi support and other ARM improvements, bhyve, hyper-v support, AMD KMS, VirtIO, Xen PVHVM in GENERIC, lots of driver updates, ZFS on root in the installer, SMP patches to pf that drastically improve performance, Netmap support, pkgng by default, wireless stack improvements, a new iSCSI stack, FUSE in the base system… the list goes on and on
• Start up your freebsd-update or do a source-based upgrade right now!

OpenSSH 6.5 CFT

• Our buddy Damien Miller announced a Call For Testing for OpenSSH 6.5
• Huge, huge release, focused on new features rather than bugfixes (but it includes those too)

OpenBSD needed funding for electricity.. and they got it

• Briefly mentioned at the end of last week\’s show, but has blown up over the internet since
• OpenBSD in the headlines of major tech news sites: slashdot, zdnet, the register, hacker news, reddit, twitter.. thousands of comments
• They needed about $20,000 to cover electric costs for the server rack in Theo\’s basement
• Lots of positive reaction from the community helping out so far, and it appears they have reached their goal and got $100,000 in donations
• From Bob Beck, \”we have in one week gone from being in a dire situation to having a commitment of approximately $100,000 in donations to the foundation\”
• This is a shining example of the BSD community coming together, and even the Linux people realizing how critical BSD is to the world at large

Dorner Manhunt Comes to an End

• Police work to confirm if Dorner\’s remains were found in burned cabin

A lot of people don\’t seem to know what a \”burner\” is. A burner is an incendiary tear gas canister that is specifically made to start a fire. These were used in Waco on the branch Davidians. At the time the FBI claimed the cult member started the fire, but much later the FBI admitted to using incendiary tear gas canisters to burn the Davidians out of hiding.

A tear gas canister ignited a fire at a City Terrace area home surrounded by SWAT officers as part of a standoff the morning Wednesday Jan. 16, 2013, according to sheriff\’s deputies.

Hoping to end the standoff, law enforcement authorities first lobbed “traditional” tear gas into the cabin. When that did not work, they opted to use CS gas canisters, which are known in law enforcement parlance as incendiary tear gas. These canisters have significantly more chance of starting a fire.

The main difference between the White House executive order and CISPA is that CISPA would allow private companies (like Facebook or Google) to share details about cyber attacks with the government, whereas the executive order is a one-way street, with the feds sharing information with the private sector. CISPA opponents were concerned about immunity clauses that they said would incentivize companies to hand over customer information without hesitation.

DHS engages \’Constitution free\’ zones around US border

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, anyone who is within a 100 mile radius of the US border is subject to the search and seizure of any and all electronic devices for no apparent reason. These zones known as \”Constitution free\” zones have many privacy advocates speaking out against the new policy and fear that this new procedure is a violation of civil liberties for American citizens.

US senators propose assassination court to screen drone targets

The idea was bandied about during Thursday\’s confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee John Brennan, who fueled the talk by saying he thinks the concept is \”worthy of discussion.\” The nominee, as a vocal supporter of the targeted-killing program, has come under scrutiny for what some lawmakers see as the administration\’s unchecked power to kill, even if the target is an American citizen.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said as part of an effort to regulate the killing, she wants to review proposals to create something similar to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court — which reviews requests for wiretaps against suspected foreign agents — for drone strikes.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, is pushing the idea the hardest.

According to his vision, the drone court would be an avenue for U.S. officials to argue in secret before a judge why an American citizen should be targeted for death. He said it would be like \”going to a court for a warrant\” and proving probable cause.
