Runs Linux

The NES Classic, Runs Linux

With a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7, 256 MB of RAM, and 512 MB of NAND Flash, it is typical of the hardware found in Linux single board computers, like the Raspberry Pi 2. Surprisingly for Nintendo, there does not seem to be any custom components in it, and it looks like it even does run Linux.

Desktop App Pick

SSH Power Tool

The SSH Power Tool (sshpt) enables you to execute commands and upload files to many servers simultaneously via SSH without using pre-shared keys. Uploaded files and commands can be executed directly or via sudo. Connection and command execution results are output in standard CSV format for easy importing into spreadsheets, databases, or data mining applications.

Advantages

Since sshpt does not utilize pre-shared SSH keys it will use provided credentials for all outgoing SSH connections. This has many advantages:

  • Can be used immediately: No need to spend enormous amounts of time setting up pre-shared keys.
  • More secure: A server with pre-shared keys is a huge security risk. It literally holds the keys to the castle! With sshpt you can perform all the same tasks as with pre-shared keys with less risk to your infrastructure.
  • More compliant: Executing commands as root via pre-shared keys makes it hard to figure out after-the-fact who did what (root as a shared account). When an administrator (or user!) uses sshpt to execute commands it is much easier to figure out “who did what and when” from an auditing standpoint.

It’s official: Oracle will appeal its “fair use” loss against Google

Oracle’s post-trial motions, which the district court judge rejected, indicate the tack it might try to take on appeal. It could focus on jury instructions that it viewed as improper, or Oracle could simply argue that the evidence presented at trial was so overwhelming that no reasonable jury could have found in Google’s favor.

VoCore2: $4 Coin-sized Linux Computer with WiFi

Coin-sized Linux computer & smart router, target to make wireless life easier, fully open source.

VoCore2 is an open source Linux computer and a fully-functional wireless router that is smaller than a coin. It can also act as a VPN gateway for a network, an AirPlay station to play lossless music, a private cloud to store your photos, video, and code, and much more.

The Lite version of the VoCore2 features a 580MHz MT7688AN MediaTek system on chip (SoC), 64MB of DDR2 RAM, 8MB of NOR storage, and a single antenna slot for Wi-Fi that supports 150Mbps.

All this for $4.

Spend $12 and go for the full VoCore2 option and you get the same SoC, but you get 128MB of DDR2 RAM, 16MB of NOR storage, two antenna slots supporting 300Mbps, an on-board antenna, and PCIe 1.1 support.

Both versions of the VoCore2 have a power consumption of 74mA at standby, and 230mA at full speed. With this low power consumption, a small 9800mAh battery pack can power it for more than four days.

  • Subject: Chris was right

I think Chris’ stance on Lenovo being the problem and how they should be ashamed for building a non linux compatible machine was off target. Yes Intel are the issue here, but not Lenovo.

If Microsoft or any other company goes to a hardware manufacturer asked for a feature or specification to make their product stand out (like in this case better battery life), then there is no reason why that hardware manufacturer should not do that.

Just because it makes it makes it Linux incompatible seems to be the uproar here.

I didn’t see people grabbing pitchforks when the Raspberry Pi 1 and 2 etc didn’t have standard windows support from the ARM processor.

Noah was dead right with this one. It’s disappointing that the last words on the topic were ‘Shame on Lenovo, they will never make that mistake ever again. +1 for the good guys’

Apart from that, loved the rest of it.

Hello, this is James from past las chatrooms and i recently saw where both of you use flux and i have been having back and other pain and was wondering if this would help. Doubtful to most, but between using flux and staying out of the sunlight considering the medications i am on i thought i would give it a try.

What have i got to lose right? I am in process of saving money for starting up a linux laptop business and i want to express my sincerest thanks to the developers of this program as well as you at jb for putting this flux program into the spotlight. I no longer have much joint back or shoulder pain and though i was having seizures and falls i have had none since Monday of last week. Thanks to you and the developers i am leading a new life. Thanks so much!

Keeping Linux Performing Well.

Tips and tricks for keeping your Linux box in top performance.

Creating your swap files on a separate disk can also help quite a bit, especially if your machine swaps frequently. It happens if you do not have enough RAM for your environment. Using KDE with all the features and applications that come along may require several GiB of memory, whereas a tiny window manager with console applications will perfectly fit in less than 512 MiB of memory.

Although the extent-based nature of XFS and the delayed allocation strategy it uses significantly improves the file system’s resistance to fragmentation problems, XFS provides a filesystem defragmentation utility (xfs_fsr, short for XFS filesystem reorganizer) that can defragment the files on a mounted and active XFS filesystem. It can be useful to view XFS fragmentation periodically.

The kernel supports different schedulers for storage disk in-/output (IO). These are the CFQ scheduler (Completely Fair Queuing), the NOOP and Deadline. Another, the BFQ (Budget Fair Scheduler) is available in the linux-zen kernel.

A HDD has spinning disks and head that move physically to the required location. Such structure leads to following characteristics:

  • random latency it quite high, for modern HDD it is ~10ms (ignoring a disk controller write buffer).
  • sequential access provides much higher throughput. In this case head needs to move less distance.

In case if we have a lot of running processes that make IO requests to different parts of storage (i.e. random access) then we can expect that a disk handles ~100 IO requests per second. Because modern systems can easily generate load much higher than 100 requests per second we have a queue of requests that have to wait for access to the storage. One way to improve throughput is to linearize access, i.e. order waiting requests by its logical address and always choose the closest request. Historically this was the first Linux IO scheduler called elevator scheduler.

One of the problems with the elevator algorithm is that it makes suffer processes with sequential access. Such processes read a block of data then process it for several microseconds then read next block and so on. The elevator scheduler does not know that the process is going to read another block nearby and, thus, moves to another request at some other location. To overcome the problem anticipatory IO scheduler was added. For synchronous requests this algorithm waits for a short amount of time before moving to another request.

While these schedulers try to improve total throughput they also might leave some unlucky requests waiting for a very long time.

Linux Academy

Going my own way

In the end it’s a mixture of just being tired of dealing with the crap associated with Linux development and realising that by continuing to put up with it I’m tacitly encouraging its continuation, but I can’t be bothered any more. And, thanks to the magic of free software, it turns out that I can avoid putting up with the bullshit in the kernel community and get to work on the things I’m interested in doing. So here’s a kernel tree with patches that implement a BSD-style securelevel interface. Over time it’ll pick up some of the power management code I’m still working on, and we’ll see where it goes from there. But, until there’s a significant shift in community norms on LKML, I’ll only be there when I’m being paid to be there. And that’s improved my mood immeasurably.

Closing a door | The Geekess

I am no longer a part of the Linux kernel community.

Greetings Angela and Chris!

I had the very pleasant surprise of learning that I was the winner of the FauxShow Ting $300 service credit promo! My Motorola XPRT was flaking out on me, so I decided to take advantage of the $25 FauxShow offer to pick up a Chris-Fisher-recommended HTC One (it arrived yesterday, and it\’s very nice so far).

Let me take this opportunity to thank you for introducing me to Ting–my wife and I love it. Also, in addition to regularly enjoying the FauxShow, I\’m a big fan of LAS, Linux Unplugged, TechSnap, and Coder Radio. To celebrate the unexpected windfall in mobile savings, I\’ve upped my support from the affiliate browser extension to a monthly JB subscription (it was a bit overdue–my consumption of JB content now rivals my listening to NPR, so it made sense to support both through the subscription model). I\’m a heavy user of the JB Roku channel, so kudos and thanks to \”cbojar\” for that. Keep up the great work; the excellent JB content is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Hey Ang and Chris!

With YouTube\’s recent usage of their Content ID system, many respectable YouTube channels have had their content removed. Many popular channels have given the middle finger to YouTube recently and decided to serve videos instead on their personal pages.

Keeping that in mind and with FauxShow and other JB shows using content in their videos (fair use or not), does this threaten the content of the show? I know that Scale Engine hosts the audio and video and you can do without YouTube in the future, but I would admit that it would suck for JB to lose their YouTube audience.

So what are your thoughts on YouTube\’s Content ID? Is this the beginning of the end of the site?

Dev World Hoopla

Infosys allegedly achieved this ratio \”by directly discriminating against individuals who are not of South Asian decent in hiring, by abusing the H-1B visa process to bring workers of South Asian descent into the country rather than hiring qualified individuals already in the United States, and by abusing the B-1 visa system to bring workers of South Asian descent into the United States to perform work not allowed by their visa status rather than hiring individuals already in the United States to perform the work.\” Infosys \”used B-1 visa holders because they could be paid considerably lower wages than other workers including American-born workers,\” the lawsuit states.

Interviewing

The \”Fizz-Buzz test\” is an interview question designed to help filter out the 99.5% of programming job candidates who can\’t seem to program their way out of a wet paper bag.
The text of the programming assignment is as follows:

Fizz buzz (also known as bizz buzz, or simply buzz) is a group word game for children to teach them about division.[1] Players take turns to count incrementally, replacing any number divisible by three with the word \”fizz\”, and any number divisible by five with the word \”buzz\”.

Like me, the author is having trouble with the fact that 199 out of 200 applicants for every programming job can\’t write code at all. I repeat: they can\’t write any code whatsoever.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger on Bitcoin, tax rates, bank regulation and the Federal Reserve policy.

New York City-based Liberty City Ventures is announcing its Digital Currency Fund, a $15 million commitment to Bitcoin and other digital currency startups.

The latest buzz comes by way of the Bitcoin Boost Fund, a new Silicon Valley fund that announced on Tuesday that it will hand out $50,000 to seven or so Bitcoin startups.

All of the startups will be graduates of Boost VC, an accelerator program that seeks to mentor would-be Bitcoin barons. The accelerator, created earlier this year, is run by Adam Draper, who describes himself as a “fourth generation VC” and who is hosting a hackathon at the “Bitcoin: Future of payments” conference in San Jose this weekend.

In this episode of the Keiser Report, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss the currency of an independent Scotland. Max argues that bitcoin will force the banking system to reinvent itself or die, for what can be more of an invisible hand but a cryptologically guarded, invisible currency.

The bitcoin network hashrate estimate on bitcoinwatch.com passed 1 exaFLOPS (1,000 petaFLOPS) this week – over 8 times the combined speed of the top 500 supercomputers.

The FLOPS estimate is based on the opportunity cost of computers using their hardware for mining instead of other applications. Miners are using their graphics cards to perform hashes instead of other FLOPS-based distributed computing.

The Department of Homeland Security appears to have shut down the ability to use Dwolla, a mobile payment service, to withdraw and deposit money into Mt. Gox, a Bitcoin trading platform. A Dwolla representative confirmed the move to Betabeat.

— Spending Your Coins —

I lived on Bitcoin for a week. This is what I learned.

Humble Bundle, known for its flash sales of millions of $s worth of games from high quality developers, is now accepting Bitcoin using Coinbase merchant tools.

Mobile gift card company Gyft has partnered with BitPay to start accepting bitcoins within its app.

This is a big partnership for both, as BitPay’s CEO, Tony Gallippi, says that the company currently processes $5 million per month in bitcoin transactions for its merchants. Gyft allows you to purchase gift cards at more than 50,000 retail locations in the U.S., including Brookstone, Lowe’s, GAP, Sephora, Gamestop, American Eagle, Nike, Marriott, Burger King and Fandango. So, technically, you’ll now be able to use bitcoin to pay for a Whopper.

BitPremier’s mission is to provide astute buyers in the Bitcoin community with access to unique, high-end luxury items and opportunities. We believe in a customer-centric, secure, and friendly marketplace environment where we give individual attention to every item proudly listed on our site.

BitPremier is backed by the NYC-based Bitcoin Opportunity Fund. Other investments of the fund include CoinLab, BitPay, BitSpend, OpenCoin/Ripple, Coinsetter, TradeHill, and Coinapult.

“We’re just looking for a solution where we can bank legitimately like any other industry,” Smith said. “Wherever you stand on the marijuana issue, it serves everybody’s interest to have banking access.”

Aaron Smith, executive director of the Washington-based National Cannabis Industry Association

  • Bank officials say they are complying with federal law:

At Wells Fargo, “our policy of not banking marijuana dispensaries is based on applicable federal laws and our own assessment of our responsibility,” said Seitz, the bank’s spokesman.

American Express Co. (AXP), the biggest U.S. credit-card issuer by customer purchases, “has made a decision to not allow card acceptance for medical marijuana,” Sanette Chao, a spokeswoman for the New York-based company, said by e-mail. “It is our policy to adhere to federal law in such matters.”

U.S.-based BitPay, has refused to enter the fray. As a processor, BitPay offers same-day conversion of merchant bitcoin into a US dollar bank account. CEO Tony Gallippi explained in an interview that although several have applied, “medical marijuana is not allowed in our terms of service.” Of course to be consistent, other merchant types not allowed by BitPay include ecstasy, MDMA, any controlled substances, weapons, gambling, and sports betting. They will however support transactions for file sharing, storage/backup services, and VPN services, because “freedom of information is important.”

You may have already received complaints about the RSS video feed not working on Android devices, or at least on the Galaxy Nexus, which I have. The feeds stopped downloading probably about a month ago or so. I *am* able to continue to download and watch video podcasts from other groups like TWIT, etc. It\’s just your feeds and I have tried both the Large and the Mobile – Large is what I was using that used to work just fine. I even purchased and downloaded another podcast player on my Nexus, just to learn that it\’s the same thing there too. The primary app that has been working for me is \”BeyondPod\” and I just tried \”DoggCatcher.\” I hope you can either get this resolved or get back with me so that we can troubleshoot this because both TechSnap and LAS are my favorite shows to keep up with and I only do so on my phone while I get ready in the mornings – and sometimes when I do my long distance aerobic runs on elipt ical, etc. at the gym. Again, the issue I\’m having is only with your feeds and they stopped working about a month ago or so. Thanks!

Qo’nos Review

  • It feels, finally, like a CITY!
    • Roaming NPCs, varied architecture, flavor text/dialogues
    • The changing street signs are an awesome touch
  • The Bank (run by Ferengi)
    • First, awesome touch to have Ferengi in charge… just makes sense to a certain degree
    • Second, the “warehouse” area beneath the platform is just a mind-bogglingly awesome touch
  • The Boff Arena
    • This was my favorite part of the old Qo’nos, so I’m glad it’s still intact. Although having to “zone” to it was a bit jarring. I hope that transition can be smoothed out.
  • The Shipyard
    • O. M. G.
    • Not intuitive to find, but once you do it makes PERFECT sense
    • The fact that there’s no zoning when you transition, means that they managed to combine ground and space in some sort of epic fashion. Compliments to the gurus behind that.
      • Side Note: This was my first time seeing the new Ship Acquisition UI and it is TOTAL HAWTNESS.

MATH

o   New Options – there is now a new set of shooter mode controls and keybinds in the options menu, so you can manage both independently.
o   All values have been updated – Although the classic control mechanics are preserved in STO, the ground game has been completely rebalanced. All values including HP, damage, and most ground Kit and Captain abilities have been modified and updated.
o   Tooltips – All ground combat powers have been given complete and accurate tooltips.
o   Swap to shooter mode – use the N key to Swap between Shooter and RPG mode (we are probably remapping this). If you open a menu (like your skill page) while in shooter mode, you will temporarily drop back to RPG mode, so you can maintain control over your character. Use L-Mouse and R-Mouse to fire your primary and secondary attack on your weapon. Middle mouse will activate your melee attack. You can, however, still use the keyboard keys – 1, 2, and 3 – if you prefer. Notice you can fire your weapon without a target.
o   Cover – STO has a simple cover mechanic. Crouching behind a tall object can break line of site from your foe. I don’t want to over-sell this, but it does work.
o   R and T key – Using R and T will temporarily change the focus of your Mouse buttons. (This may change a bit. We already have a new iteration that may even be out in time for the interview).
o   Kit and Captain abilities – In RPG mode, like always, all abilities require a target.  However in Shooter mode, it works differently. If an ability can target self or friend, you won’t need a target. For instance, if you target an ally with a heal, you will heal that target. If you have no friendly target, you will heal yourself. Kit or Captain abilities that harm or debuff a single foe still requires a target, even in shooter mode.  This is to prevent misfires of abilities that have large cooldowns. However, Kit and Captain abilities that are AoE do not require a target to activate in shooter mode. If you have no target, the ability will activate at max range. So, for instance, you can place a Dampening field at a point on the ground in shooter mode.
o   Grenades – As an aoe, they do not require a target to activate in shooter mode.  Most significantly, they can be thrown over walls.
o   All weapons updated – You will now see a significant difference between each weapon.  They each have noticeable advantages and disadvantages, and swapping weapons will become much more meaningful.
o   Weapon melee – Melee can be activated with the middle mouse button or the 3 key. It is now a combo. The rifle combo is the most advance, while the Assault combo is more limited. Rifle Combos will change attacks automatically. The first always tries to push the target back, but if the target has grown resistant to knock backs, the combo will automatically change to expose attacks.  Once the target is exposed, the combo will again change to Exploit attacks.
o   Notable Weapon changes – Some weapons have been completely changed. When you log in, they will be updated. We can go through as many as you like, outlining the key differences of each.  But the following had the most significant change:

      • Assault Rapid sweep – Is now a Full Auto Rifle, and now uses Soldier skill instead of Special Forces. Its much faster and responsive, and its secondary attack can be swept across targets. Note the Dual Pistol secondary attack can also be swept.
      • Pulsewave rifle and Assault Arcwave – Both of these weapons are now the Pulsewave. We combined the secondary attacks of both weapons into one. The Pulsewave is now effectively an energy shotgun. Its fast and powerful, and both attacks do more damage the closer you are to the target.
      • Assault Multi-Beam – This weapon was given the most significant upgrade. It is now a minigun! Both attacks have a spool-up time, but are very high in damage. Its secondary attack fire an extremely long burst that can be swept across multiple targets.

o   What else is planned – Possible iteration on R and T with UI updates, Boff powers and Commands, splitting Aim and Crouch, bug fixes, tuning.
o   Questions and feedback – any additional questions or comments from you

Before we dig into that however, BIG NEWS landed this week regarding the impending purchase of Cryptic Studios by Perfect World International. Despite the community’s uproar over this news, we’re taking a more level-headed approach to the corporate nature of this acquisition, and intend to share our thoughts on why this could be one of the best business moves STO could potentially see.

Infected Tips

Watch the uncut full stream here & Part 2 here:

General Tips:
– If you’re new, get experienced players to lead you through. There’s plenty out there now.
– Voice chat is highly recommended. (Vivox coming soon!)
– Follow directions. Or if you’re leading, give clear directions that are easy to follow!
– Do not progress any dialog pop-ups until the Team Leader gives the OK, or does it him/herself.
– Do not go in unprepared! Make sure you have a solid spec that plays to the specific strengths of both your Space AND Ground abilities.

SPACE:
Zip around BEHIND the gate, and do not activate the two popups until the team is in position.
With high DPS, you may be able to destroy the gate in a single activation sequence.
If you destroy the gate without killing transmitters, you get better loot.
If you do not destroy the gate in a single activation, you will be faced with 3-4 waves of borg ships that get progressively more and more powerful with each wave.

Good Space Boff Abilities:
Hazard Emitters (practically a must-have)
Tactical Team
A lot of DPS/buffs/debuffs
Gravity Well — good for chain reactions on warp cores!

Tactical Cubes have a ~5km explosion radius. If you are trying to keep the Transmitters alive, and have a Tac Cube spawned, be sure to lure it away from them before destroying the cube.

Tweet Update:
Cryptic_Gozer Dan Griffis
Weekly STF Update… Infected space 85% complete. Battle to destroy the Transwarp Gateway is much more interesting now 🙂

GROUND:
Ground Weapons:
Tactical — Sniper(x2)
Engineer+Science — CRM200 + Melee

Ground Kits:
Engineer: Fabrication or Bunker Kit
Tactical: Fire Team or Squad Leader
Science: Medic (at least one on the team)… if you want to DPS, I recommend Geophysicist

Order of Ground Targets:
Interlink Node
Infected
Drone
Medical
(Protos? Can be cleaned up at any time after Medical. May despawn on their own.)
AFTER ONLY TACTICALS ARE LEFT, SWITCH TO MELEE WEAPON
Tactical
Heavy
Elite

FIRST BOSS: Ogen
Pull him OUT of his room, into the hallway.
He will stop and summon friends halfway through the fight. If you are in the hallway, they will not join the battle.

END BOSS: Manus
Get into the alcoves on the wall opposite from the entry doorway.
This blocks line of sight between group members (meaning, no heals!), which prevents her “chain lightning” attack from hitting more than one target at a time.

Before we get started, I want to tell you about my INSPIRATION for tonight’s show.  I spent more than 4 hours today recovering data from a pile of old HDs I had sitting around, thanks to receiving a new toy from ThinkGeek.

(link: https://bit.ly/9jSu4O)

This thing is fantastic, but a little touchy.  I had to make sure that the drive was already spun up and whirring contently before plugging in the USB portion, which I didn’t realize until I went and looked up some reviews on another website.  So actually the first hour was spent cursing violently and attempting to troubleshoot past my own stupidity, after which the thing performed perfectly.  Eventually I defeated the data goblins, and recovered the buried treasures of my family’s past.  Photos, tax documents, old emails, everything.  About 30gb worth, spread over 9 different drives.

INFORMATION OVERLOAD:

We all suffer from complete data saturation today. With our busy email inbox, steady Facebook and Twitter feeds, news radio, and cell phones our mind never seems to get a moments rest, and truthfully it’s all just too much for us to retain and process.

This is exactly the situation the US Government’s Intelligence agencies are in. So, tonight’s show is gonna be about the perils of living in the Information Age.  Namely, the concept that by proliferating so much information out over potentially faulty hardware, and over networks and far-flung bureaucracies, sometimes it can all become too big.  Too much to handle.

War on Terror is now so big, nobody knows its true size or cost

https://projects.washingtonpost.com/top-secret-america/

* 3,100 firms & agencies involved, across more than 10,000 locations.

* ~854,000 people (1.5x the population of Wash DC) have Top-Secret Clearance.

* In the Wash DC area, more than 17 billion square feet of buildings have been built (or are under construction) since 9/11, for the purposes of intelligence agencies.

* Wasted duplication of effort is inevitable because there is no single source of oversight.

* More than $100 BILLION of our national budget has been spent over the past 3 years, on intelligence gathering efforts

*Every day, the National Security Agency’s systems “intercept and store 1.7 billion e-mails, phone calls and other types of communications.”

              (Good summary-style re-post: https://yhoo.it/ce3k0u )

TIPS TO COMBAT INFO OVERLOAD:

No data silos allowed. IE, if you use a task manager on your Smart Phone, make sure it syncs to a service that fits with your current work flow.

Don’t use a service/app that is outside your current normal routine. For example, don’t use an app that syncs to Remember the Milk if you don’t typically already login to that service on a regular biases. Out-of-site and out-of-mind. I opted to go with the less functional Google Tasks simply because it integrated so well into my Android/GCal/Gmail work flow. I know RTM is a better service, but that means nothing if I won’t ever remember to use it.

Use a memory enhancer, the digital kind. Evernote comes to mind. It’s a software/service combo that supports syncing notes of all kinds (audio, text, images, pdf, doc, etc) across desktops and handheld devices.

Focus on your top 3 or so tasks for the day. If you come across something shiney online that you don’t want to loose track of, take advantage of a service like Read it Later to store it for your attention at a better time.

Traffic counts are wrong, nobody knows why

https://blog.reddit.com/2010/07/experts-misunderestimate-our-traffic.html

* Reddit admins use Google Analytics widgets to track page traffic vs. major tracking services.  Numbers from these independent trackers are as little as 10% of the Analytics data.

* Reddit’s ‘unique visitor’ count = 8,000,000

* Compete.com = 927,000

* Quantcast = 10,000,000 to 12,000,000 since Jan 1, 2010

– Also shows 2 months of declining traffic, which Reddit says they have not had since 2007.  So even if the numbers are off, they aren’t consistently off in the same way each month.

* Alexa = weird.  It uses some strange metric to measure your % of total internet traffic.  But doesn’t provide numbers on how they compute these percentages.

* Nielsen (yes, the ratings people) = total audience of 652,000 people

Comments on this story are very interesting…

* One comes from the webmaster @ Penny Arcade:

— Apparently those services’ numbers become more accurate if you install their tracking service which invariably slows down your service response times, so nobody wants to do that.  Or wants to buy the software.

* Another comes from the Google DoubleClick Ad Planner project manager:

— Explains how to “certify” your Analytics data using a program called Ad Planner.
