Announcing the Release of Fedora 25 Beta – Fedora Magazine

The Workstation edition of Fedora 25 Beta is going to show off its stuff, too:

  • GNOME 3.22: Fedora 25 includes GNOME 3.22 in its pre-release and in the Final version, coming soon. Helpful new features include multiple file renaming, a redesigned keyboard settings tool, and many other UI improvements across the environment. For full details, refer to the GNOME 3.22 release notes.

  • New Fedora media writer: The new Fedora Media Writer is a tool that downloads the latest stable Fedora for you. It then helps you write it to media such as a USB stick, so you can take Fedora for a spin on your system. If you like what you see, you can install to your system from the live environment. The Fedora Media Writer is available for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.

  • Wayland by default

    • Wayland is the replacement for the legacy X11 display system. Wayland has been under development for several years. While like most software it still has some bugs, we believe it’s ready to serve as a default that works for many users.
    • Users can still select the old X11 system if necessary to avoid a problem that affects them.
  • Improved Flatpak support in the Software tool: The Software tool has the ability to install, update, and remove Flatpak software where a Fedora system is configured to point to a repo that offers it.

  • GNOME Shell extensions are no longer checked for compatibility with the current version of the Shell. This was originally required because the GNOME interfaces were changing rapidly during the early days of GNOME 3. Now these interfaces have stabilized, and extensions can generally be expected to work with new releases. Any problems with an extension should be reported to the author through the homepage, as listed on the Extensions site.

History Of Xenix — Microsoft’s Forgotten Unix-based Operating System

Turning back the pages to the late 1970’s, Microsoft entered into an agreement with AT&T Corporation to license Unix from AT&T. While the company didn’t sell the OS to public, it licensed it to other OEM vendors like Intel, SCO, and Tandy.

As Microsoft had to face legal trouble due to “Unix” name, the company renamed it and came up with its own Unix distribution. So, AT&T licensed Unix to Redmond that was passed on to other OEMs as Xenix.

Poll on macOS 10.12 is broken

Top Comment

I can’t say I’m surprised. I used to be responsible for the port and upkeep of a relatively low level product to OS X. It was far and away the most troublesome platform. We would frequently run into bugs that had been reported on openradar for years without having been addressed.

Off hand I remember spending the better part of two days trying to understand a bug that was traced to a coroutine issue — OS X was just not saving a required register, known and reported for 5 major versions.

I remember discovering that unnamed semaphores don’t work on OS X. Not that the functions aren’t implemented, just that they always return an error.

So I’m not surprised that poll() would be broken, nor am I surprised that it’s broken again.

The only thing that surprised me anymore is how many people continue to insist to me that OS X (or macOS now, I guess) is a great UNIX. It may be a great desktop OS.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 is, more or less, a from scratch re-working of Ubuntu MATE. Not just to accomadate GTK3+ but to also make nearly all packages shipped with Ubuntu MATE by default “Recommeneded”. This means most default applications can now be uninstalled without issue.

The work to port MATE Desktop to GTK3+ has been ongoing for a couple of years and Ubuntu MATE is the first major distribution to ship a full GTK3+ implementation of the MATE Desktop. And the absolute latest release too, MATE Desktop 1.16!

While the €169.90 Aquaris E4.5 is a mid-range phone, the Meizu MX4 delivers considerably more computing power for €299. It runs on a Meizu-customised octa-core MediaTek MT6595 SoC with four ARM Cortex-A17 and four ARM Cortex-A7 cores, with a PowerVR G6200 GPU to handle the graphics, all supported by 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

Linux bug leaves USA Today, other top sites vulnerable to serious hijacking attacks

The vulnerability resides in the design and implementation of RFC 5961, a relatively new Internet standard that’s intended to prevent certain classes of hacking attacks. In fact, the protocol is designed in a way that it can easily open Internet users to so-called blind off-path attacks, in which hackers anywhere on the Internet can detect when any two parties are communicating over an active transmission control protocol connection.

virtio-gpu is a driver for virtualization guests that allows to use the host graphics card efficiently. In this release, it allows the virtualization guest to use the capabilities of the host GPU to accelerate 3D rendering. In practice, this means that a virtualized linux guest can run a opengl game while using the GPU acceleration capabilities of the host, as show in this or this video. This also requires running QEMU 2.5.

Son’s Lego Robotics Club RUNS LINUX!

9 nine year old son wanted to join the Lego Robotics club

Hey guys, I’ve got a runs Linux for you. My 9 nine year old son wanted to join the Lego Robotics club at his elementary school. Because it is a volunteer-run program, I got roped into it. I ended up actually teaching the program and have been having a great time teaching the kids how to program their Lego EV3 robots. There are 12 kids in the group and the school district was supposed to configure 6 Apple laptops with the Lego programming software for us to use. Wouldn’t you know, there were some bureaucratic issues getting the laptops set up. Luckily, since my friends and family know I like to tinker with computers, I have 6 laptops at the house, most of which had been given to me because they had issues, that I subsequently fixed. Poking around in the menus on the Lego robot, I saw that the robot ran Linux (see attached pic). Honestly, I had more than half expected they would run Linux. Imagine my dismay when I went to the Lego website to download the software to write the programs to control the robots, only to discover that the Lego software was only available for Mac and Windows! So I spent a couple of evenings updating the Windows installs on the dual boot machines, and reinstalling Windows on the Linux-only machines, and for the last 6 weeks the kids have been downloading their robot controller programs from Windows machines onto the Linux robots. So the Lego EV3 robots run Linux, and the kids have been having a blast.

SouthEast LinuxFest | Linux and in the GNU/South

The SouthEast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Open Source Software. It is part educational conference and part social gathering. Like Linux itself, it is shared with attendees of all skill levels to communicate tips and ideas, and to benefit all who use Linux and Open Source Software. SELF is the place to learn, to make new friends, to network with new business partners, and most importantly, to have fun!

This talk will introduce you to the concepts behind botnets, and also show a live demonstration of a botnet on a sandboxed network.

We’ll start off by discussing the implications of running a botnet and the horrifying effect of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. I’ll demonstrate how bots behave on infected hosts, and give attendees a look at a command and control (C&C) system, which ultimately gives the bots their orders.

At the end of the discussion attendees will be encouraged to share their horror stories of botnet attacks on networks and systems that they’ve administered.

There are a lot of resources available online for those who’d like to research botnets. I’ll share some of these with attendees, but please realize that this talk is for research purposes only.

HP kills The Machine, repurposes design around conventional technologies

Last year, HP announced it was building The Machine — a computer meant to leap as far above conventional modern systems as a high-end Xeon workstation is above an IBM mainframe from the 1960s. The entire system was designed to work with special-purpose cores and to use memristors as a universal memory architecture. The entire system would be tied together through extensive use of silicon photonics. It was bold, ambitious, and cutting-edge. And now, it’s pretty much dead.

The award for the best open source photo management application went to digiKam.

This repository contains the gnome 3.16 runtimes, org.gnome.Platform, as well as a smaller one that is useful for less integrated apps (like games) called org.freedesktop.Platform. It also has corresponding develoment runtimes (org.gnome.Sdk and org.freedesktop.Sdk) that you can use to create applications for the platforms.

Right, this has been stopping me from sleeping from a while because it has wound me up quite a lot. (slightly sarcastic)

On a certain episode of L.U.P Chris questioned how Ubuntu applications (made with the Ubuntu SDK) would look on non Ubuntu desktop environments, and quite rightly so came to the conclusion of “well, they would look out of place”. Fine.

Lets stop right now and talk about something else, Gnome “Apps”. Gnome Apps are fucking shit under anything that isn’t Gnome, however nobody is giving Gnome a hard time over this. Gnome is shitting all over everyone else with their poorly designed applications and the Ubuntu Desktop and other desktops are suffering because of it.

    Holy cookies I did it..

I created a Jupiter Broadcasting Meetup group. I was inspired by the idea of how nice it would be to have a rough idea of how many folks will be making it out to LFNW. Just to help with planning.

But I realized my long-term plans are a bit more ambitious. As the weather gets nice in the Seattle area, I’d like to hold semi-frequent meetups with Jupiter Colony members that are in the area. Maybe once a month, record them, or stream them. Eat, chat, maybe even create show content.

Also as we travel to other fests, or hit the road, I’d like to have a tool to suss out interest in your area.

So after LFNW I’d like to use the group for that kind of stuff, which sounds like a lot of fun to me!

Dell’s Linux PC sequel still “just works”—but it adds 4K screen and rough edges | Ars Technica

For $1,533 out of the gate or about $2,080 as tested, is the M3800 Developer Edition worth it?

Sure—if you want a fast, well-built, well-equipped 4K laptop preloaded with Ubuntu, with most of the potential edge-case configuration issues already taken care of, with an active set of developers working to ensure that the necessary repos are kept current, and with an actual, for-real OEM warranty and support.

    The Good
    • Ubuntu 14.04, factory-preconfigured to just work
    • Barton George and the other Dell engineers worry about packages and drivers so you don’t have to
    • High-quality build: no squeaks, no rattles, no shimmies
    • 16GB of RAM, the potential for a large SSD, and a Haswell i7 CPU mean it’s got plenty of guts as a developer’s workstation
    • Reasonable amount of upgradeability
    • Display is bright, beautiful, and works with Ubuntu 14.04 (including the multitouch functionality)
    The Bad
    • Thunderbolt port doesn’t really work in Ubuntu
    • Application-level 4k scaling issues are pretty much all over the place
    • If all you’re after is Linux on a laptop, you can do it for cheaper than the M3800’s starting price
    • I kind of hoped the Dell logo on the back would light up, but sadly it doesn’t
    The Ugly
    • Battery life with the Nvidia GPU enabled is far too short for a day’s worth of working

Secret US cybersecurity report: encryption vital to protect private data

A secret US cybersecurity report warned that government and private computers were being left vulnerable to online attacks from Russia, China and criminal gangs because encryption technologies were not being implemented fast enough.

The advice, in a newly uncovered five-year forecast written in 2009, contrasts with the pledge made by David Cameron this week to crack down on encryption use by technology companies.

Part of the cache given to the Guardian by Snowden was published in 2009 and gives a five-year forecast on the “global cyber threat to the US information infrastructure”. It covers communications, commercial and financial networks, and government and critical infrastructure systems. It was shared with GCHQ and made available to the agency’s staff through its intranet.

One of the biggest issues in protecting businesses and citizens from espionage, sabotage and crime – hacking attacks are estimated to cost the global economy up to $400bn a year – was a clear imbalance between the development of offensive versus defensive capabilities, “due to the slower than expected adoption … of encryption and other technologies”, it said.

An unclassified table accompanying the report states that encryption is the “[b]est defense to protect data”, especially if made particularly strong through “multi-factor authentication” – similar to two-step verification used by Google and others for email – or biometrics. These measures remain all but impossible to crack, even for GCHQ and the NSA.

I wanted to address kinda a question you posed on the Tech Talk Today Episode 117

But there is the problem of more open platforms, like GNU/Linux variants, BSD and other unixes, Mac OS X, and all the non-mobile versions of Windows. All of these operating systems are already designed to allow users to execute any code they want to run. The commercial operators — Apple and Microsoft — might conceivably be compelled by Parliament to change their operating systems to block secure software in the future, but that doesn’t do anything to stop people from using all the PCs now in existence to run code that the PM wants to ban.

More difficult is the world of free/open operating systems like GNU/Linux and BSD. These operating systems are the gold standard for servers, and widely used on desktop computers (especially by the engineers and administrators who run the nation’s IT). There is no legal or technical mechanism by which code that is designed to be modified by its users can co-exist with a rule that says that code must treat its users as adversaries and seek to prevent them from running prohibited code.

Google Glass sales halted but firm says kit is not dead

Google is ending sales of its Google Glass eyewear.

The company insists it is still committed to launching the smart glasses as a consumer product, but will stop producing Glass in its present form.

Instead it will focus on “future versions of Glass” with work carried out by a different division to before.

The Explorer programme, which gave software developers the chance to buy Glass for $1,500 (£990) will close.

The programme was launched in the United States in 2013.

    • Sleek and stylish – Edge-to-edge glass gives the Dell 21.5″ touch monitor a clean finish that boasts of fine craftsmanship.
    • Natural, direct and intuitive, the Dell 21.5″ touch monitor offers you a fast and easy way to use your applications. Tap, slide, swipe, turn, pinch and stretch with your fingers -it?s that simple and intuitive when used with Windows 8.1
    • Enabling touch is easy! Simply connect a USB cable from your PC to the monitor’s USB upstream port, and use either an HDMI, DVI or VGA cable to project images onscreen

    Dell S2240T 21.5″ monitor

    • Diagonal Viewable Size: 21.5″ (18.77″ horiz., 10.56″ vert.)
    • Display Type: Multi-touch full HD LED
    • Resolution: Full HD 1920 x 1080 (60Hz)
    • Aspect Ratio: 16:9 (widescreen)
    • Contrast Ratio: 3,000:1 (typical), 8 million:1 (dynamic, max)
    • Max Viewing Angle: 178° vertical (typical), 178° horizontal (typical)
    • Brightness: 250 cd/m2 (typical)
    • Color Gamut: CIE1931 (72%)
    • Response Time: 25 ms (typical), 12 ms (typical) with Overdrive
    • Pixel Pitch: 0.248 x 0.248 mm
    • Connectivity: HDMI, DVI, VGA

    The Bad:

    • Dat gap. There is a noticeable gap between display and glass.
    • At least on Linux: If you unplug the USB while the computer is running, the desktop session gets all kinds of confused.
    • 1080p is perhaps a bit small for a lot of people looking for a display in 2015.

    The Good:

    • Responsive touch
    • Good picture, not amazing. But good.
    • Super easy to setup, just plug in the USB cable for touch
    • The stand is perfect. It stays firm, but is easy to move. It feels a bit like magic.

I don’t know if this one has been mentioned before but in Episode 11 of Sequestered in minute 3 there is a second of root nmap of a windoze 2003 device from a shell.

Our Runs Linux from HDR Photography on Linux | LAS s30e06 | January 19, 2014

    • Many large Commercial software vendors are transitioning to a subscription model. Does this create an even great lockin for schools?

    • One-to-One programs are very expensive, and the argument I’ve always heard was: Must use Windows, must use Office. Have get the kids ready for the “real world” that uses those tools. Is there a sound argument to that “concern”?

    • Linux and open source give students the ability to go very deep into how the computer works, if they are motivated and want to embrace their inquisitive nature. How far down the rabbit hole are your young Linux users permitted to go? How much can they explore?

Charlie Reisinger of Penn Manor gives talk at All Things Open 2014 | Opensource.com

Charlie Reisinger from the Penn Manor School District talked to us next about open source at his school. This talk was an expanded version of his lightning talk from the previous night.

Penn Manor has nine IT team members which is a very lean staff for 4500 devices. They also do a lot of their technology in house. But, before we talk about open source, Charlie took a tangent into the nature of education today. He says that school districts are so stuck on the model they’re using and have used for centuries, but today kids can learn anything they would like with a simple connection to the Internet. You can be connected to the most brilliant minds that you’d like, so teachers are no longer the fountains of all knowledge. A glaring gap in this evolution is that the classroom hasn’t been transformed by technology; if you walked into a classroom 60 years ago, it would look pretty much like a classroom today.

Enabling students in a digital age: Charlie Reisinger at TEDxLancaster – YouTube

Charlie Reisinger, an innovative IT Director for Penn Manor school district in Lancaster County, shows how to provide affordable, new digital technologies to high school students. The answer is not only a cost-effective way to improve the quality of education, it is opening students’ minds.

1:1 Laptop Program | PM Technology Blog

During the 2012-2013 school year, a committee comprised of faculty, administrators and a school board liaison worked to evaluate the viability of a district 1:1 computing program. After several months of internal discussion and public board presentations, a recommendation to proceed with a 1:1 laptop program at Penn Manor High School was unanimously approved at the April 1, 2013 school board meeting. The recommendation called for the program to commence with a pilot during the Fall of 2013. The full building implementation began in January 2014. At that time, each full-time high school student was provided with a personal laptop computer for use throughout the school day and at home.

A Lightworks developer talks about the kind of issue you meet when coding for an NLE on Linux

In recent weeks, some of Lightworks’ Linux users started to report reduced performance in both new and old versions of the software. After some investigation, it appeared that the slow-down was only affecting systems with a Linux kernel newer than 3.13. In tests, kernel performance in 3.14 did seem to be slightly worse than earlier versions, but nothing that could explain the symptoms being experienced by users. So what could possibly explain the sudden change in behaviour?

BBC News – FBI boss ‘concerned’ by smartphone encryption plans

“I’d hate to have people look at me and say, ‘Well how come you can’t save this kid?’ ‘How come you can’t do this thing?'” said Mr Comey in a briefing.

His comments came in reaction to a decision by Apple to enable a file encryption system on its iOS 8 software for which it has no keys. This means it would not be able to comply with any official request to help police get at the data on those devices.

Mr Comey said he was “very concerned” about these plans because of what they would allow people to do.

“What concerns me about this is companies marketing something expressly to allow people to place themselves beyond the law,” he said.

“I am a huge believer in the rule of law, but I am also a believer that no-one in this country is beyond the law,” he added.

Apple and Google have yet to respond to Mr Comey’s comments.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt: Competition Between Apple and Google is More Brutal Than Ever – Mac Rumors

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt and former SVP of products, Jonathan Rosenberg, recently published a new book entitled “How Google Works, which explores topics like corporate culture, strategy, talent, innovation, dealing with disruption, and more. The duo have done an interview with Bloomberg to promote the title, with Schmidt commenting on the state of affairs between iOS and Google and Apple’s new larger-screened iPhones.

According to Schmidt, competition between Apple and Google is more brutal than ever before, with “enormous, enormous racing” going on between the two companies, which ultimately has “enormous benefits for consumers worldwide.”

Lenovo set to complete acquisition of IBM x86 server business

Lenovo has announced that it will be closing the acquisition deal of IBM’s x86 server business on October 1. The closing purchase price is lower than the $2.3 billion announced in January because of a change in the valuation of inventory and deferred revenue liability, Lenovo said. Roughly $1.8 billion will be paid in cash and the remainder in stock. Lenovo says it had “big plans” for the enterprise market. “We will compete vigorously across every sector, using our manufacturing scale, and operational excellence to repeat the success we have had with PCs,” the company added.

Ubuntu Touch For Phones Hits RTM, First Phones Coming This Year

In early 2013, Canonical showed the world Ubuntu Touch, a version of Ubuntu developed specifically for smartphones. Now, the mobile operating system has finally reached “release to manufacturing” status. (Here’s the release announcement.) The first phone running Ubuntu Touch, the Meizu MX4, will start shipping in December. “Details are scarce on its hardware, but a leak from iGeek suggests the Pro variant may have a Samsung Exynos 5430 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 2560×1536 resolution screen. … This more powerful hardware is good news if true, and it bodes well for Ubuntu’s vision of computing convergence.” Softpedia has a preview of the RTM version of the OS. They say performance has improved significantly, even on old phones, and that the UI has been polished into a much better state.

MultiROM Manager – Android Apps on Google Play

**This app only works on Nexus 7 (2012 & 2013), Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, as they are the only devices officially supported by MultiROM.
This application requires root and it is designed to be used by experienced “power users”.

It is strongly recommended to read XDA thread before installing this app, you can find links at the bottom of this description.**

MultiROM Manager can install or update MultiROM, it’s recovery and kernels. It can also install Ubuntu Touch system-image based builds into MultiROM as a secondary ROM.

MultiROM is one-of-a-kind multi-boot mod for Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 4. It can boot any Android ROM as well as other systems like Ubuntu Touch. Besides booting from device’s internal memory, MultiROM can boot from USB drive connected to the device via OTG cable. The main part of MultiROM is a boot manager, which appears every time your device starts and lets you choose ROM to boot. You can see how it looks on the left image below and in gallery. ROMs are installed and managed via modified TWRP recovery. You can use standard ZIP files to install secondary Android ROMs, daily prebuilt image files to install Ubuntu Touch and MultiROM even has its own installer system, which can be used to ship other Linux-based systems.

The goal of this project is to create a configuration-free P2P skype replacement. Configuration-free means that the user will simply have to open the program and without any account configuration will be capable of adding people to his friends list and start conversing with them. There are many so-called skype replacements and all of them are either hard to configure for the normal user or suffer from being way too centralized.

Ubuntu Meizu MX3 and BQ Aquaris – First look ahead of UK launch (Wired UK)

Wired.co.uk went hands-on with the two prototype devices at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

    The MX3 has a 5.1-inch screen.

Provisional specs for the phone include an octa-core chip, a 3-core graphics processor and 2GB of RAM.

It should be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and will be powered by a 2,400mAh battery.

There are no specific specs available yet for the BQ Aquaris

    Canonical’s CEO tells Wired.co.uk:

The marketing strategy for the phones when they officially launch will be a global online campaign. It will be a relatively soft launch, she adds, that will give Ubuntu fans the opportunity to get their hands on the devices first.

    Lawrence Lessig At SCALE12x

At SCALE12x the 12th Southern California Linux Expo in Los Angeles, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig delivered an
opening keynote that challenged the free software community to do
something it does not normally attempt: engage with the political
system. Lessig is perhaps best known as a public advocate for reform
in the US government’s patent and copyright systems and for his activism in intellectual property issues (such as founding
    Creative Commons).

As he explained to the SCALE crowd, those affected public policy areas include some key
technology issues—and Lessig’s own commitment to the cause he
credits directly to his friendship with developer Aaron Swartz.

The talk was an unusual one for SCALE, where politics is rarely on the agenda. But the crowd responded with enthusiasm, to the stories of technology policy, and to the analogy of zeroing in on a flaw like a bug and fixing it.

Both devices offer the same 1.63-inch, 320 x 320-pixel Super AMOLED screen found on the Galaxy Gear, but they advance to a faster 1GHz, dual-core processor. Memory stays put at 512MB RAM and 4GB flash.

Cutting the price of Windows 8.1 by 70 percent for makers of low-cost computers and tablets

Manufacturers will be charged $15 to license Windows 8.1 and preinstall it on devices that retail for less than $250.

Instead of the usual fee of $50.

We’re told that Microsoft is aiming to position Windows 8.1 with Bing as a free or low-cost upgrade for Windows 7 users. Any upgrade offers will be focused on boosting the number of people using Windows 8.1. This Bing-powered version of Windows 8.1 may also be offered to PC makers as part of recent license cuts for devices under $250.

Ubuntu’s Juju tool can also now manage LXC Linux containers, an OS-level virtualisation technology that enables more workloads to run on a single machine than full virtualisation, potentially reducing cost for service providers, the firm said.

Juju also now supports bundles, which enables a user to automate deployment of an entire stack without the need for scripting, and export that bundle to share with other admins, according to Baker.
