After running down the latest state of the Rover leak project, Chris reflects on some of the things he enjoys most about where they’ve been camping recently.

Then join us as we move the Rover to a new location, that frankly, was a compromise too far. We picked a location for its convinces to work the kids. And for a few major reasons which become obvious in this video, we learn the hardware this type of RV Park is not our style of camping.

A new big tech trend right under our noses? A new generation of nomadic high-tech workers living off the grid, while staying always connected.

These developers ask why is there is much pressure to buy the biggest house, buy the best TV, get a great car?

Before us now is an entire world of possibilities & cultures, some of us have been completely blind to. The ability to live comfortably, in a tiny home, or an RV & move about or bring your home with you when you travel is an amazing way to live. We look at a few remarkable examples.

Off the Grid, But Still Online | Motherboard

For the last 61 days I’ve been traveling throughout California while living out of my Corolla, collecting stories from people living off the grid.

The people I’ve met have abandoned the chase of the American Dream; they are not battling traffic to work a nine-to-five job in order to live in a big house or buy a fancy car. Instead, their values are centered around new life experiences, connecting with nature, building their own homes, growing their own food, and having a full sense of control over their lives—including managing the amount of time they spend on the internet.

The average American feels lost going a day without logging onto their social media accounts via smartphone, tablet, or computer. By contrast, these people know exactly how much power their solar panels need to generate to charge their phones or watch a DVD on their laptops, and they moderate their usage in the same way they would measure out exactly how much water they need to cook dinner and take a shower.

Joey Hess

So I’ve built etckeeper (managing /etc with git, for sysadmins), ikiwiki (wikis and blogs in git), and git-annex (applying git to very large files). I’m funded by a Kickstarter project in 2012-2013 to build something not unlike DropBox, based on git-annex, that automatically version controls and syncs files between computers.

I’m also a long-time Debian developer, having been involved in building the Debian installer, and I run a 30-year delayed Usenet feed at olduse.net.

This place is nicely remote, and off the grid, relying on solar power. I only get 50 amp-hours of juice on a sunny day, and often less than 15 amp-hours on a bad day. So the whole house runs on 12 volt DC power to avoid the overhead of an inverter; my laptop is powered through a succession of cheap vehicle power adapters, and my home server runs on 5 volt power provided by a USB adapter.

Spending time on the open road taught us a lot of lessons, really fast. We share some of our favorites with you, thank some who helped with gear for the trip…

And then discuss our rather nasty leak.

The Rover has been parked (mostly) since the trip, and there is a bit of wear. We’ll probably spend the next couple of videos tackling these challanes. We start with one of our most pressing.

Plus check out the Hyperlapses of Chris at work recording a bunch of shows this weekend!

In a mad rush we leave Bozeman Montana and drive straight home. We capture the rush, and the exhaustion we felt after making the long trek, our motivations for the last few days, and some early reflections on the trip.

Without a doubt, we hit that famous Seattle traffic once we got back into town, can’t say we missed that.

And Chris and Hadea share what life’s been like since getting back.

Our first full day in Montana was filled to the brim. Breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Missoula, boon docking for the day in Butte where Antrit found us via the Rover Tracker and joined in as we came up with some creative solutions to limited power and iffy connections.

Hadea takes a minute to introduce herself to the community while roaming around Butte, and then we are off to Bozeman, where we score a beautiful RV spot at a KOA camp and get free passes to the Bozeman Hot Springs.

Its was my worst nightmare. A major problem with the stinkin black tank, right before we hit the road.

Thankfully this sticky situation pushed us to learn some handing troubleshooting techniques and pick up a helpful gadget before we hit the road.

Plus a quick look at the LTE Router I’ll be using to crate a LAN, forward DNS, and manage the different Mifi connections for the trailer’s LAN.

This might very well be the last update before we hit the road!

We are looking for suggestions on where we can park overnight in Spokane, please email us: rover@jupiterbroadcasting.com

Using gotty to expose my BBS to the web!

I was delighted to see that you guys covered gotty in the last episode of LAS. I just recently (about a week ago) started experimenting with gotty as a bridge between my telnet/SSH BBS and the web, and it’s been a pretty sweet experience so far. The author was very responsive on his GitHub page in walking me through a handful of issues I was having in getting the font setup correctly (since my board makes heavy use of textmode artwork). ANGELA: This is Women’s Tech Radio.
PAIGE: A show on the Jupiter Broadcasting Network interviewing interesting women in technology. Exploring their roles and how they are successful in technology. I’m Paige.
ANGELA: And I”m Angela. Are you sure about that Paige?
PAIGE: Today I’m not. It’s been a long day at the conference here.
ANGELA: Yes.
PAIGE: So, we are live here at Linux Fest Northwest. And we got to pull some awesome people off the floor to do interviews today.
ANGELA: And before we get into the interview, I want to mention that you can support Women’s Tech Radio and the Jupiter Broadcasting Network by going to patreon.com/jupitersignal. You can donate as little as $3.00 a month or whatever amount you want. There’s a swag level where you get free stuff in the mail, or you can just ,like I said, do $3.00 a month. But either way, it’s a giant bucket. It funds all the shows on the network, and specifically Women’s Tech Radio, it keeps us going. And now we will get into the interview.
PAIGE: So, we’re here in the Make — What’s the name of your trailer?
DIANE: It’s Get Makered.
PAIGE: Get Makered.
DIANE: Yes.
PAIGE: And Angela is going to get 3D scanned for a 3D selfie.
ANGELA: Yep, Woo Hoo.
DIANE: I’m Diane Muller.
PAIGE: And this is Diane Muller and she is here — there — this is a home built awesome rig and their own scanning solution. They’ve got their own 3D platform, which they’re going to throw up on GitHub so other people can make.
ANGELA: Awesome.
PAIGE: And some other cool stuff. And I think Diane is going to walk us through the process.
DIANE: Yeah, so what I’ve done is, I belong to a group called the COast Makers, which is up in the sunshine coast in beautiful British Columbia, and we’re hosting our first maker fair in Gibson’s BC on May 31st, so we invite you all to come up across the border. We’re here in Billingham at Linux Fest Northwest. This is our maiden voyage of the GetMakered trailer. What we have is a human sized turntable that we built together, a collaboration design that is a very compact, low elevation, so that we can get people in, in the trailer, which is only 6’2”, so no standing up on this. It was designed to hold around 200 to 250 pounds. It’s got an old electric wheelchair motor in it, and it’s got a V-belt fan belt that’s 77 inches long, and it’s on top of a lazy Susan thing. The design we’ll put up on GitHub under GetMakered at some point. We haven’t quite done it. It’s all open sourced stuff. And then we’ve taken an XBox Kinect scanner here and, unfortunately we’re at Linux Fest, but XBox is a Linux thing. So, we have lovingly gotten a Windows laptop with a NVidia card in it, and using some software from a company called Skinect that connects to the XBox and allows us to use it and import 3D images. So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to turn on the turntable here, very slowly.
PAIGE: Time for a ride.
DIANE: And she’s going to go around really slowly. ANd then the scanner. I’m going to just set it far enough back so that it turns green on the screen here and when I start counting, you have to sit very still starting in one, two, three, there you go. And it’s going to create a Hulk-like image for you, for me to look at in green and capture pretty much all of you. Now, people with curly hair, there’s shadows and things like that. So, those kinds of things leave holes in the mesh. The top of the head, since the scanner is down here, I will have to, once we get a good scan of the rest of her get the top of her head, otherwise she’ll have a hole in her head. She’ll have a hole under her chin, because there’s a shadow under the chin. So, I’ll try and shave underneath with the Kinect by hand. So, that’s really about — there’s sort of four stages to getting a really good thing that you can print out on the Tinkerine printer. Which Tinkerine is a Vancouver based 3D printing company. They manufacture these things. They have great out of the box experience and they’re really road worthy, so I can take it to workshops and if it bounces a little bit it still prints nice, and it’s great. So, in order to get to the point where we’re doing something like the one that we just printed of someone we scanned yesterday, we have to clean it. So, the holes that I talked about under the chin or in the curly hair have to get cleaned. And you can use software like MeshLabs and Blender, which are nice open sourced projects. Tinkerine has Tinkerine studio, which is the next stage. So, after scanning and cleaning, you have to slice it. So every model has to get sliced so that the printer knows what layer to lay down on the printer. And Tinkerine studio that I use, and that is a free download from Tinkerine. So, we slice it. The first scanning creates a .STL file, which you can use with any 3D software, AutoCAD TInkerCAD. All the stuff will import the STL file. And that’s what we’re giving people today here. And then, you convert it in Tinkerine Studio to their .G format and throw it on the SD card and 42 minutes later comes out a little tiny, I think it’s 40 millimeter high bust of the person. And so, what we’re trying to do here is create a really unintimidating, obviously, experience of people being able to do this stuff. And then we’ll teach people that there’s more to 3D printing than downloading a rubber duck or something off of Thingiverse and just printing it. What we’re trying to do is teach people the skills to create art objects, to create interesting fun things. And now, I’m going to scan the top of your head, so don’t move. And since I’ve talked this long, we usually don’t send you around that often.
PAIGE: Angela is super inpatient.
ANGELA: Well, I think I should have chosen a different pose.
DIANE: Different pose.
ANGELA: Because it’s an upper angel, which is not flattering (unintelligible).
DIANE: All right, so I’m going to stop you turning around and let you get off while that renders that.
ANGELA: Okay.
DIANE: And there we go. And so, you will have a few holes in your head.
ANGELA: Okay.
DIANE: If you write your name and email down I’ll send you the .STL file. This is really all about teaching people how to use 3D printers. My prediction is, in another year or two things like this are going to be like having a microwave in your house.
PAIGE: Yeah, totally.
DIANE: But the interesting thing about microwaves is I really don’t like anything you can cook in a microwave other than popcorn. And that’s the thing about 3D printers, is that if you really want to learn how to use them and do interesting creative things, you have to learn more than how to touch a button and print something you downloaded from Thingiverse. You need to learn how to conceptualize things in 3D software like TinkerCAD or AutoCAD or lots of different other project page has tons of open source tools; MeshLab, Blender that I mentioned already. But, you really have to start thinking about how can you make your own stamp on the rubber duck that you can download from Thingiverse. Or, if you downloaded eyeglasses or something like that, how can you make those eyeglasses your own. And in order to do that you have to start using some software and learning some skills to put the GetMakered logo on the rubber duck so it’s your rubber duck. Or turn the rubber duck into a mallard or a goose or morph it into a superhero. And those are the kind of skills that we’re really interested in making people aware of and teaching the basics of. And we’re going to be here all day today at Linux Fest. We’re going to be at the Maker Fair on the Sunshine Coast on May 31st. The beginning of June there’s a mini-Maker Fair in Vancouver BC. We’ll be there. And we’re going to be at OSCON down in Portland Oregon. So, you can find us on Facebook at GetMakered or at www.getmakered.com.
PAIGE: We just got scanned inside. Angela got a 3D self here at your Get Makered. I was just wondering if you could tell us a little bit about how you got into this, because we know that your vision, we heard from inside, is to get people more aware of the tools and the trade of 3D printing. But, what got you into it?
LAURIE:: Yeah, because my wife and I are both really technical, but I come from the web design and marketing side. So, originally I was kind of going, oh it sounds so technical and I couldn’t really get into it, but as soon as we got a printer and I started looking on Thingiverse, it was like oh now I’m really going to be doing this thing. And that got me into — I got my first kit to do steampunk glasses with the trinket array inside. We have two daughters, so we’re really hoping that, especially the 14 year old, that she gets really interested in things like this. We come from a town of 30,000 people, our little region, so they’re still learning Powerpoint in high school. That’s their computer training.
PAIGE: Yeah, that’s not exciting.
LAURIE: No. No. So, that’s the — for their standpoint, it’s like oh can we stop hearing about the trailer, because we just finished the trailer. Like, Thursday night we were putting in the floor. We had to take it right down to the aluminium to get it into good shape.
PAIGE: Good timing, huh?
DIANE: Yeah.
PAIGE: So, this is something we’ve actually talked a bunch about with people here is like the different skidding involved in technology today. It’s really cool, because there’s this nice intersect where you can see things happening. We talked with one girl about robotics and how robotics has that kind of component where as a creative person you can still be excited about technology, because as soon as you program a little bit the robot does something. And I think 3D printing, would you say, is kind of in the same vein where you really get to see results?
LAURIE: Definitely. ANd I love the idea that it’s not as — what Diane is talking about. You can go and you can get a diagram to print something, but I think a lot of people, to keep up with the development curve, the idea of thinking spaciously in a three dimensional space, I like that sort of brain stretched and taking away some of the fetters around design, because I come from a totally 2-D world. ANd so, moving into 3D, I didn’t do the 3D graphics or anything. I kind of find them Kitchy. But, when you’re actually making something three dimensional, that’s really fun. And I love how much people collaborate. You know, we’re part of a very small Makers group and we just got designated for Sunshine Coast Maker Fair, our first Mini-Maker fair is on the 31st. And everybody helped in the trailer, so they get to take it out too. So, if the robotics guy wants to go and do workshop at a school, he can just come and get the trailer.
PAIGE: And it seems like you guys really have a nice dedication to real, true open source in the community there.
LAURIE: Yeah, and the sharing. We’re going to put the pedestal, the turntable into GitHub so people can build their own. You know, it was just problem solving.
PAIGE: Yeah.
LAURIE: We had a guy who had a new CNC machine and another guy was like, can we find a motor for this? And he brought four over and we tested them all. I was a bit bored on that day, I’ve got to say, watching the CNC machine. They’re all like salivating. I’m going, I don’t get it.
PAIGE: yeah, it takes a certain kind. I love a CNC machine, but precision is my thing. So, what software did you start to use to get involved with modeling this stuff. What was your 3D software choice?
LAURIE: It would be the Skintech that comes with this. Taking it up into places that MeshLabs and doing some tidying. We helped a friend of ours. He and his daughter play Minecraft and so we did a scan of him and he took it and embedded it somewhere in MInecraft. And they play every Saturday. So, one Saturday she’s going to find him at the entrance to a building.
PAIGE: Oh, that’s awesome. Very fun.
LAURIE: Yeah, I love stuff like that.
PAIGE: I didn’t even think that that game can kind of combine it, where it can go back into digital art. It doesn’t have to come out and be 3D.
LAURIE: Yes.
PAIGE: Well, physical 3D. Very cool. Is there anything else that I haven’t asked you that I should?
LAURIE: Oh, I have a very lofty title. I am teh GetMakered wrangler.
PAIGE: Wrangler, yes.
LAURIE: So, I had to learn how to drive the trailer, and I’m still learning how to back up. There was nobody here to watch my debacle of parking this morning.
PAIGE: Well, you’ve got to talk to your Make space and get the backup cameras put on this thing. It will help a lot.
LAURIE: Yeah.
PAIGE: Well, this is super awesome and we look forward to kind of following you guys in your journey, and keep in touch.
LAURIE: Great, thank you very much.

MOVING PICTURE HAPPY FUN MUTUAL TIME:

Blade Runner loosely based on the novel : Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
+ A science fiction novel by American writer Philip K. Dick first published in 1968. The main plot follows Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter of androids, while the secondary plot follows John Isidore, a man of sub-normal intelligence who befriends some of the androids.
* The novel is set in a post-apocalyptic near future, where the Earth and its populations have been damaged greatly by Nuclear War during World War Terminus. Most types of animals are endangered or extinct due to extreme radiation poisoning from the war. To own an animal is a sign of status, but what is emphasized more is the empathic emotions humans experience towards an animal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_Androids_Dream_of_Electric_Sheep
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner

From the Wikipedia Article
The Final Cut contains the following differences (in order of appearance) from the 1992 Director’s Cut:
  • The fireballs in the opening refinery shot are correctly synchronized with the associated light play on the smokestacks. Some of these had been off-sync in earlier versions.
  • The close-up of an eye overlooking the Hades landscape is no longer the static image seen in previous versions. The eye’s pupil now reacts to the fireball and the eyelids move realistically. Also, the reflection of the cityscape below appears to move ever so slightly.
  • The shot of Deckard waiting to eat at the White Dragon has been shortened, its editing reminiscent of the workprint version of the shot. This was done due to the removal of the voiceover.
  • The cables lifting Gaff’s police spinner are no longer plainly visible. Cables were also removed from another shot of a spinner late in the film, just before Deckard enters Sebastian’s apartment building.
  • In addition to English the voices on police radio during Gaff’s and Deckard’s flight to the police headquarters can be heard speaking German, Japanese and Swedish.
  • A repeated visual effects shot showing the city outside Gaff’s Spinner has been adjusted very slightly: The once-obvious radar dish has been removed in the second use of the shot.
  • As Deckard enters Bryant’s office, Bryant’s statement “I’ve got four skinjobs walking the streets” is no longer obviously a spliced-in re-recording.
  • Bryant’s line “One of them got fried running through an electrical field” is changed to “Two of them…” to remove the numerical inconsistency later on.
  • Bryant adds a new line about Leon being able to “lift 400 pound atomic loads all day and night.” This is from the workprint.
  • A new cityscape horizon has been added to the shot of Gaff’s Spinner coming in for a landing at the Tyrell Corporation.
  • Additional Spinner air traffic has been added in the distance outside the large window of Tyrell’s conference room.
  • When Gaff and Deckard first appear at Leon’s apartment, the landlord now says “Kowalski,” another small bit originally from the workprint.
  • A background behind Batty when he is first introduced speaking to Leon has been changed and the thumb on his shoulder has been removed. As the shot was taken from a later scene, this has now been corrected to appear as if Batty is actually in the phone booth as Leon finds him.
  • The matte painting establishing the cityscape down the street from the Bradbury Building has been adjusted for improved realism, including fixing the perspective of the Pan-Am logo on one animated billboard.
  • The original full-length version of the unicorn dream has been restored. This is a much different version than the one that appeared in the Director’s Cut, and has never been in any version seen by the public prior to this one. Deckard is shown to be awake; previously he was asleep or nearly asleep.
  • The Unicorn’s horn has been digitally stabilized to minimize the unrealistic wobble of the horn appliance seen previously.
  • The sequence at the fish booth now shows Deckard leaving.
  • Deckard’s conversation with the snake merchant Abdul Ben Hassan has been altered so that the dialogue is no longer out of sync; Ford’s son, Ben, lip-synched the spoken dialog and his mouth was digitally placed over his father’s.
  • A shot of the busy crowds in the streets was restored. Immediately after that, a shot of two strippers wearing hockey goalie masks was restored. Finally, there’s a shot of Deckard talking to another police officer just prior to Deckard entering the Snake Pit. These three shots had previously appeared in slightly different form in the workprint version.
  • During Deckard’s pursuit of Zhora, Joanna Cassidy’s face has been digitally superimposed over that of the stunt double, Lee Pulford. This scene was re-filmed specifically for the Final Cut. Although great effort had been undertaken to replace the stunt double face with Cassidy’s, the tan-colored protective suit Pulford wore to protect against glass cuts is still visible.
  • A scar on Deckard’s face after his “retirement” of Zhora has been removed. Originally, the scene in which Deckard meets Bryant after retiring Zhora was to take place after his encounter with Leon, explaining the scar. This was done prior to the removal of the “sixth replicant,” creating a continuity error. Due to the re-ordering, the scar was always present before Deckard had actually received it.
  • When Batty confronts Tyrell, he says, “I want more life, father”; this is from the workprint version, an alternate take intended for—but never used—in television broadcasts of the film, as opposed to the original line, “I want more life, fucker.” The line also has a noticeably deeper tonal quality than the previous versions.
  • After killing Tyrell, Batty says “I’m sorry Sebastian. Come. Come.” In the original he merely approached the frightened Sebastian. This is also from the workprint.
  • As Deckard moves through Sebastian’s apartment, the once-obvious shadows of the camera crew have been digitally removed from the back wall.
  • The fight between Pris and Deckard is partly altered in the Final Cut; some small part fell away. The inserted part is from the international release from 1982.
  • After Deckard has shot Pris the first time, a second shot is inserted prior to the second one from the DC (which is now the third); all three shots were also originally part of the international release from 1982.
  • When Batty puts the nail into his hand after Batty and Deckard had fought in the bathroom, he pushes it through and the nail is coming out of his hand on the top.
  • As Deckard climbs up the roof, Batty was digitally placed into the open window, because he was missing there between two scenes.
  • Deckard does not wander around the roof as long as in the DC.
  • As Deckard flees Batty, the matte painting with a TDK neon sign has been cleaned-up a bit to look more realistic, and the TDK sign itself has been added to a subsequent shot for better continuity.
  • All the violent scenes in the International Cut that were deleted in the U.S. theatrical release and in the Director’s Cut—including Tyrell’s death, the confrontation between Deckard and Pris, and the nail through Batty’s bleeding hand—are restored to the Final Cut.
  • After Batty releases the dove, it now flies up into a dark rainy sky instead of a clear blue sky. Also, the original building (the undressed side of a soundstage) has been replaced with a more appropriate retrofit apartment building. The background has also been enhanced with a cluster of circa 2019 buildings more in keeping with the film’s dark futuristic setting.

STOked Season 1 Episode 14: We detail how Cryptic acquired the right to a Star Trek MMO, what big well known company almost acquired STO and turned it into a console only game!
Plus we cover the news of a new book based on Star Trek Online, and what you can expect. We’ve combed through the latest Cryptic staff interviews and have picked out the best bits from them all, and share them with you!

THEN – We cover the Live streamed beta leak and what the public reaction to Star Trek Online was, and we cover the latest round of game play videos and screen shots!

DISCUSSION:

The Complete History of the Star Trek Online IP:

Feb 2000: Announced at a financial meeting that Verant (which later became Sony Online Entertainment) obtained the IP to make a Star Trek MMO. This title was slated to be released for both PC and PS2 (!), but was abandoned less than 6 months later when Verant instead shifted most of their production to SWG. This version of STO was quietly abandoned
https://pc.ign.com/objects/794/794740.html

2004: Perpetual Entertainment announces development of “Star Trek Online”. PE (or P2 Entertainment, later) was also developing a “Roman” themed MMO (Gods & Heroes) which never made it past Closed Beta. In January 2007, just a few months after beginning G&H Closed Beta, a massive wave of layoffs swept the company and after another wave hit in September, PE announced they would be exclusively focusing on STO. In order to quell rumors that the company was going under, a series of screenshot releases and interviews were held that were later reported to be completely bogus, or concept-level creations ONLY.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual_Entertainment

November 2007: An article was released that Perpetual may be bought out by an investor known as Gravity Co., Ltd – a korea-based company that intended to change the game into a non-subscription-based MMO that would instead charge RL money for in-game items and advancement.
https://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50065

In January 2008, Perpetual filed Bankruptcy and liquidated their assets. Almost immediately following the collapse of Perpetual, the IP and all of PE’s work was obtained by Cryptic Studios. Utilizing the Cryptic Superhero engine, development progressed very swiftly. And by Auguest of 2008, in-game footage was available & revealed at the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas (the announcement of STO, and reveal of this footage, was co-hosted by Leonard Nimoy).

Food for thought:
Star Trek will have existed for 44 years at the time of release (since 1966)
Despite the eventual success of Star Trek, creator Gene Roddenberry nearly filed bankruptcy in the early 70s after several other TV pilots/pitches were rejected by many studios.
Due to lackluster box office draw, Roddenberry was forced by Paramount to relinquish creative control to future sequels after the release of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”
Over 15,000 fans attended the 2009 Las Vegas Star Trek Convention (vs approx. 8,000 @ Blizzcon 2009)

Firing arcs & power management discussed, driving a tactical feel to space combat.
“Fun comes first, with IP accuracy a close second.”
Klingons: Have to drop shields to cloak (susceptible to AOE torpedo spreads and such?)
Shuttles (crew-fueled abilities) can be shot down! And countered via a “Security Team” BO ability.
Subsystem targeting: Science vessels can do this innately, but BOs are better at it for a single system (Weapons, Shields, Engines, Aux)

Additional interiors post launch? “With so many ships, and everyone wanting a different configuration, there needs to be a lot of options to make it live up to Cryptic’s customization standards.”
Fleet Actions (20+ players? We keep getting different numbers.) can take place on ground or in space.
Any announcement of future projects (whatever those will be) will not come until after the release of Star Trek Online.

Computer & Video Games – Interview w/ Al Rivera
https://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=228783
A LITTLE more Klingon ship information, but not much (BoP, Raptor, Battle Cruiser (Neg’vhar, Vor’cha), and Super Carrier)
Traits: “There are about 60 species traits. Most are passive, but a few can be activated. Some are obligatory to the IP like Vulcan Nerve Pinch, Mind Meld, Telekinesis, Telepathy, Empathy, etc. Others are more implied by the IP or simply make good MMO mechanics, like Improved Strength, Logical, Warrior, Soldier, Stubborn, Spiritual, etc. Some traits are unique to certain species, and some are generic. The way it works is you first pick a species. Every species gets 4 traits. If you choose a specific species you will get 1-3 traits that are auto assigned to that species, and you can choose the remainder from a generic pool. Species specific traits are typically better than those in the generic pool, but the more species specific traits a given species has, the less generic traits the species has access too. If you choose to create your own species, you do not get any species specific traits, but you can choose all 4 of your traits from the entire generic pool, so you can make some interesting combinations not available to any specific species.”

Massively.com — Space Combat Hands-On
https://www.massively.com/2009/12/01/hands-on-with-star-trek-onlines-space-combat/
Walk-thru of some key commands: Thrust on Q/E, WASD, Power Level Presets
“Space combat may get to a point — we’re talking after release, here — where players can do it so deftly that it becomes somewhat boring, but I kind of doubt it. Every battle offers different challenges depending on the configuration of the enemy forces.” (We can assume this is somewhat in reference to things like launching fighters, boarding parties, minefields, and more.)
Article includes a handful of new screenshots! (Romulans, and weird Fed ships)

Techulous — Interview w/ Dan Stahl
https://www.techulous.com/news/exclusive-interview-star-trek-onlines-daniel-stahl.html
Crafting is not crafting. It’s either “replicate and trade” or “survey and collect” for rewards.
PvP Instancing: Arena, Objective, or Assault. (No definitions available)

MMORPG.com — Bridges & Boffs
https://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/352/feature/3792/Star-Trek-Online-Bridges-Bridge-Officers-Preview.html
“Each time the player earns a new ship, they get to select from a group of prefabricated bridge areas. The team is close to launch and they didn’t want to bite off more than they could chew.” … meaning no customization beyond just picking which one to use, for now.
There are plans to add other iconic locations, such as the Captain’s Ready Room that could store trophies and other personal items.
Akin to player housing, no piloting functions included.
Boffs: Full customization of name, features and RACE (this is not what our beta tips told us!)
Smaller ‘cast’ than the TV shows, due to combined/general classes. No helmsmen, no counselors, no morale officers. Boffs are more well-rounded, though you can choose their skills to focus on particular skillsets.
8 abilities (1 per rank, 1 ground & 1 space). All visible when you acquire a Boff to help you plan accordingly.
Boffs are groupmates, buffs, collectibles, and a tool to allow captains to adapt to different situations, all in one tidy little system.
