Slashdot Asks: Free Upgrade To Windows 10 Ends Today: What’s Your Thought On This?

While users have lauded Windows 10 for performance improvements, the Redmond-based company’s aggressive upgrade tactics have spoiled the experience for many. Whether it was installing Windows 10 on computers without users’ consent, or eating up tons of bandwidth for users who couldn’t afford it, or whether it was deceptive dialog boxes, Microsoft definitely deserves a lot of blame — and rightfully, a bunch of lawsuits. But many of these things, hopefully, will end today — July 29, 2016 (or to be exact, Saturday morning 5:59am EDT / 2:59am PDT) Today is officially the last day when eligible Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers could be upgraded to Windows 10 for free of charge. After this, an upgrade to Windows 10 will set you back by at least $119.

The laptops are Lenovo R61 and W510 systems, and the desktops are a garden variety box based on an Asus P7P55D Pro motherboard. The other desktop is my beloved Hydra 2.0 liquid cooled, dual-processor, monster system based on the EVGA Classified SR-2 motherboard. These details turn out to be important in our story.

Three Florida men sued Microsoft in U.S. District Court in Florida on Friday, saying Microsoft’s Windows 10 update prompts violated laws governing unsolicited electronic advertisements, as well as Federal Trade Commission prohibitions on deceptive and unfair practices.

Blackmagic Design Finally Introduces Fusion 8 For Linux

After acquiring Fusion back in 2014 from Canadian company eyeon software Inc, Blackmagic Design has put a lot of energy into developing one of the most advanced pieces of compositing software out there. After offering support for both, Windows and Mac platforms, the company just has announced Fusion 8 for Linux.

Editing = Cut a piece of footage and remove/add a bit in the middle.

Composting = Take an object that isn’t in the footage and put it there.

Motion graphics = take an inanimate object and animate it.

Good looking hardware shipping with +elementary OS.

Emby – The open media solution

Emby

Bringing all of your media together into one place has never been easier. Your Emby Server automatically converts and streams your media on-the-fly to play on any device.

Prepare your media

Emby identifies your media according to folder structure, file name, and the type of library to which it is assigned. Once identified, Emby downloads information like posters, descriptions, and ratings that make media selection a rich experience. The requirements for organizing and naming files are quite flexible, but will require some basic structure.

The general recommendations are:

  • Separate media into appropriate folders (e.g., Movies in a “Movies” folder, TV shows in a “TV Shows” folder, music in a “Music” folder, photos in a “Photos” folder, etc.)

  • Movies should be named as “Name (Year).exe”, for example “Brave (2012).mp4”

  • TV shows should include season and episode numbers in the name, and be stored in separate folders per show. For example: “\TV\Homeland\Homeland s01e01.mp4”

  • Music should be stored within artist and album folders, such as “\Music\Artist\Album\tracks”

Install the Server

Once your media is named and organized, it’s time to install the Server. The server is available on a number of platforms ranging from Windows to Linux, Mac, FreeBSD and Nas devices.

For more information, see installation.

Add Users

You may wish to add users and invite your friends. Users can have their own personalized media libraries, user data, recommendations and more.

For more information, see users.

Advanced Features

  • Has support for advanced features power users love, that likely does not appeal to the majority of Plex users.

Emby Supports Live TV

Live TV Support

Built-in Live TV support, and support for external services.

HDHomeRun

  • Watch live streaming HD TV on your phone or tablet wherever you are in your home
    • Cut the cable and cut the subscription costs
    • Watch live HD TV on up to 2 devices simultaneously on your wifi or wired network
    • One click of our App to view live TV on Android or iOS
    • TV antenna required

Notes

Minimum Requirements — no transcoding
  • Intel Core 2 Duo processor 1.6 GHz or better
  • At least 1GB RAM for Windows/Mac OS X
  • At least 512MB RAM for Linux
  • Windows: Vista or later
  • OS X: Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later
  • Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS or SuSE Linux
Recommended Configuration — transcoding HD Content:
  • Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2.4 GHz or better
  • If transcoding for multiple devices, a faster CPU may be required
  • At least 2GB RAM
  • Windows: Vista or later
  • OS X: Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later
  • Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS or SuSE Linux

  • Chris has noticed better compatibility under Firefox than Chrome, for playback, and Metadata management.

  • Decoding Performance seems be worse than Plex… However both are using ffmpeg on the backend. Not sure why.
  • My specific use case is a bit different than normal. I am running with a minimum amount of media. Enough to last the Finding Linux roadtrip, and maybe a bit more. I’m not loading it up with hundreds of TV shows and movies.

sshuttle · GitHub

As far as I know, sshuttle is the only program that solves the following
common case:

  • Your client machine (or router) is Linux, FreeBSD, or MacOS.
  • You have access to a remote network via ssh.
  • You don’t necessarily have admin access on the remote network.
  • The remote network has no VPN, or only stupid/complex VPN
protocols (IPsec, PPTP, etc). Or maybe you are the
admin and you just got frustrated with the awful state of
    VPN tools.
  • You don’t want to create an ssh port forward for every
single host/port on the remote network.
  • You hate openssh’s port forwarding because it’s randomly
    slow and/or stupid.
  • You can’t use openssh’s PermitTunnel feature because
it’s disabled by default on openssh servers; plus it does
TCP-over-TCP, which has terrible performance (see below).

Microsoft Has Own Distro

Microsoft has developed its own Linux distribution. And Azure runs it to do networking.

Redmond’s revealed that it’s built something called Azure Cloud Switch (ACS), describing it as “a cross-platform modular operating system for data center networking built on Linux” and “our foray into building our own software for running network devices like switches.”

But it appears Redmond couldn’t find SDN code to fits its particular needs, as it says ACS “… focuses on feature development based on Microsoft priorities” and “allows us to debug, fix, and test software bugs much faster. It also allows us the flexibility to scale down the software and develop features that are required for our datacenter and our networking needs.”

ACS Diagram

ACS believes in the power of Open Networking. ACS together with the open, standardized SAI interface allows us to exploit new hardware faster and enables us to ride the tide of ASIC innovation while simultaneously being able to operate on multiple platforms. Running on Linux, ACS is able to make use of its vibrant ecosystem. ACS allows to use and extend Open Source, Microsoft, and Third Party applications. The main functional blocks from top to the bottom of the ACS stack are shown in the figure below.

VirtualBox No Long to Provide Info about Security Vulnerabilities

This update fixes an unspecified security issue in VirtualBox related to
guests using bridged networking via WiFi. Oracle no longer provides
information on specific security vulnerabilities in VirtualBox.
To still
support users of the already released Debian releases we’ve decided to
update these to the respective 4.1.40 and 4.3.30 bugfix releases.

Ubuntu Hardware Store

It just got even easier to buy Ubuntu laptops, desktops and phones from India’s biggest online retailer.

Canonical has opened a brand new “brand store” for Ubuntu products on Snapdeal, who are the exclusive stockists of the Bq Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition and E5 Ubuntu Edition smartphones in India.

China’s Year of the Linux Desktop

For years, the “year of the Linux desktop” was right around the corner: Open-source software would displace Windows (or Window$), and usher in a glorious, peaceful revolution in the computing industry.

If Dell is to be believed, that revolution is happening now.

Dell’s head of China told The Wall Street Journal that NeoKylin Linux is shipped on 42 percent of the PCs it sells into the country, primarily for the commercial and government PCs that Dell specializes in. Hewlett-Packard also ships NeoKylin-equipped PCs to China, the paper said, but it’s unclear how many they sell with the OS installed.

America’s crackdown on open-source Wi-Fi router firmware

Analysis America’s broadband watchdog is suffering a backlash over plans to control software updates to Wi-Fi routers, smartphones, and even laptops.

In a proposed update [PDF] to the regulator’s rules over radiofrequency equipment, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would oblige manufacturers to “specify which parties will be authorized to make software changes.”

In addition, it proposes that “modifications by third parties should not be permitted unless the third party receives its own certification.”

AMD Confirms Vulkan Driver For Linux, But To Start Off As Closed-Source

AMD has finally revealed some basic details concerning their support of Vulkan on Linux. AMD has a Vulkan driver but it will begin its life as closed-source, reports Phoronix. In time the AMD Vulkan driver will transition to being open-source. This Vulkan driver is built to interface with their new AMDGPU kernel DRM driver that’s part of their long talked about AMD open-source strategy for Linux. This closed-then-open Vulkan driver will be competing with Valve’s Intel Vulkan driver that will be open from day one.

Apple’s iOS 9 to have ‘huge’ stability and optimization focus after years of feature additions

For 2015, iOS 9, which is codenamed Monarch, is going to include a collection of under-the-hood improvements. Sources tell us that iOS 9 engineers are putting a “huge” focus on fixing bugs, maintaining stability, and boosting performance for the new operating system, rather than solely focusing on delivering major new feature additions. Apple will also continue to make efforts to keep the size of the OS and updates manageable, especially for the many millions of iOS device owners with 16GB devices.

New agency to sniff out threats in cyberspace – The Washington Post

The Obama administration is establishing a new agency to combat the deepening threat from cyberattacks, and its mission will be to fuse intelligence from around the government when a crisis occurs.

The agency is modeled after the National Counterterrorism Center, which was launched in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks amid criticism that the government failed to share intelligence that could have unraveled the al-Qaeda plot.

Over the past several years, a series of significant cyber-incidents has affected U.S. companies and government networks, increasing the profile of the threat for policymakers and industries. Disruptions, linked to Iran, of major bank Web sites, a Russian intrusion into the White House’s unclassified computer networkand the North Korean hack of Sony Pictures have raised the specter of devastating consequences if critical infrastructure were destroyed.

LG To Show Off New 55-Inch 8K Display at CES

One of the most in-your-face buzzwords of the past year has been “4K,” and there’s little doubt that the forthcoming CES show in early January will bring it back in full force. As it stands today, 4K really isn’t that rare, or expensive. You can even get 4K PC monitors for an attractive price. There does remain one issue, however; a lack of 4K content. We’re beginning to see things improve, but it’s still slow going. Given that, you might imagine that display vendors would hold off on trying to push that resolution envelope further — but you just can’t stop hardware vendors from pushing the envelope. Earlier this year, both Apple and Dell unveiled “5K” displays that nearly doubled the number of pixels of 4K displays. 4K already brutalizes top-end graphics cards and lacks widely available video content, and yet here we are looking at the prospect of 5K. Many jaws dropped when 4K was first announced, and likewise with 5K. Now? Well, yes, 8K is on its way. We have LG to thank for that. At CES, the company will be showing-off a 55-inch display that boasts a staggering 33 million pixels — derived from a resolution of 7680×4320. It might not be immediately clear, but that’s far more pixels than 4K, which suggests this whole “K” system of measuring resolutions is a little odd. On paper, you might imagine that 8K has twice the pixels of 4K, but instead, it’s 4x.

No, A \’Supercomputer\’ Did NOT Pass The Turing Test For The First Time And Everyone Should Know Better

Okay, almost everything about the story is bogus. Let\’s dig in:

  1. It\’s not a \”supercomputer,\” it\’s a chatbot. It\’s a script made to mimic human conversation. There is no intelligence, artificial or not involved. It\’s just a chatbot.
  2. Plenty of other chatbots have similarly claimed to have \”passed\” the Turing test in the past (often with higher ratings). Here\’s a story from three years ago about another bot, Cleverbot, \”passing\” the Turing Test by convincing 59% of judges it was human (much higher than the 33% Eugene Goostman) claims.
  3. It \”beat\” the Turing test here by \”gaming\” the rules — by telling people the computer was a 13-year-old boy from Ukraine in order to mentally explain away odd responses.
  4. The \”rules\” of the Turing test always seem to change. Hell, Turing\’s original test was quite different anyway.
  5. As Chris Dixon points out, you don\’t get to run a single test with judges that you picked and declare you accomplished something. That\’s just not how it\’s done. If someone claimed to have created nuclear fusion or cured cancer, you\’d wait for some peer review and repeat tests under other circumstances before buying it, right?
  6. The whole concept of the Turing Test itself is kind of a joke. While it\’s fun to think about, creating a chatbot that can fool humans is not really the same thing as creating artificial intelligence. Many in the AI world look on the Turing Test as a needless distraction.

It\’s a $279 Wi-Fi thermostat (available today to purchase through HVAC contractors; it\’ll be available in Lowe\’s stores by August) that is one of the most visually appealing products in the space, as well as an obvious response to the Nest Learning thermostat. But perhaps more importantly, Lyric is also a platform. The company\’s ambition is to launch a full suite of Lyric products that can all be controlled your smartphone.

Mike’s had his Ouya for a couple weeks and shares his review, plus Microsoft announces the Xbox One but the developer situation seems a bit murky.

Meanwhile Chris suspects the world is ignoring the big chances Apple could dominate the living in just a few minutes, with the push of some bits.

Plus picking the right language for an open source project, Openshift v Heroku, and thoughts on the future of Go.

“The whole point of the Oracle Google suit was that Oracle was passed that Google didn\’t use their VM but instead wrote their own VM based on the open Java language specifications. So given that I don\’t see Java language specification being closed any time soon, and that Google are unlikely to drop their Dalvik implementation (especially after basically getting a soft slap on the wrist in the courts), TechCrunch\’s Java question was stupid, Larry Page fscked up not calling them out (maybe he was sick) and you guys should have picked up in this.”

Ouya Review

Let\’s say everything goes exactly right for Ouya. Every good game in the Play Store becomes available to Ouya, Netflix and Amazon decide to play nice with the device, and the ROM and hacker community explode and make every app and many more available to the nascent platform. Then and only then, Ouya can be viable — if it can combine a decent set-top box with a decent gaming platform, it may have a case to make for your $99. But those are a lot of cards that have to fall a particular way, and without them the Ouya is a lot more like a Raspberry Pi than an Xbox 360.

Anyway that was my experience with the console. It\’s still early, but the platform seems to be shaping up nicely. Only time will tell if it can actually grab the attention of gamers everywhere.

It\’s difficult not to weigh the Ouya\’s current shortcomings against all of its grand, much-publicized promise, but all of that grandiosity has to be reconciled with an important fact: The Ouya costs $99. Even if competent mobile ports are the best games the Ouya ever gets, that\’s an incredibly low barrier of entry for consumers and developers alike. How many good games does it take to be considered a good return on a $99 investment? One? Five? 10?

XBox One For Devs

So the leaders of the indie game community clearly weren\’t thrilled by the Xbox One reveal. But does that mean that Microsoft is hanging them out to dry? Possibly. An independent developer who has worked with Microsoft in the past told NBC News that \”premium\” has become something of a buzzword for the company\’s new console, as if to emphasize that the company wants to maintain a strong hand in curating all gaming content that appears on XBLA.

A few developers have weighed in on the Xbox One reveal, with many citing confusion over why we have to have Kinect 2 enabled all the time, and why the main focus was on the television aspect of the console — and not the games.

Microsoft on Thursday revealed new details about its \”NUads,\” which are coming to Xbox Live this fall. NUads are interactive advertisements that put the Kinect\’s motion-sensing and voice-detecting abilities to work.

In an application filed in December 2010 but just made public last week, Microsoft sought to patent an advertising engine that gauges people\’s emotional states based on their search queries, emails, instant messages and use of online games, as well as facial expressions, speech patterns and body movements. The ad engine is device-agnostic; as Microsoft noted in its application, \”client devices\” could include personal digital assistants, smart phones, laptops, PCs and gaming devices.

A patent filed by Microsoft indicates that Kinect could count the number of viewers watching (or playing) content and allow the content supplier to charge a fee per person.

2012 Predictions:

  • Google TV will make a comeback.
  • Google TV will then become just as irrelevant by the end of 2012 as it was at the end of 2011.
  • Google will release Android 5.0 with a whole new UI.
  • We will all still be using X11 (and not Wayland) by years end.
  • Windows Phone 7 sales will be incredibly slow, causing Nokia to come up with a new strategy. There will be much laughter.
  • The Raspberry Pi will become available and sell out faster than they can make them.
  • Mint will continue to gain popularity… then suddenly drop down significantly (mirroring PCLinuxOS’s rise and fall in user share).
  • Intel will start (or join) another new Linux distro (forgetting about Moblin, Meego and Tizen).
  • Redhat will make more money and Fedora will continue to lose market-share.
  • Canonical will transition away from the desktop. Ubuntu desktop will live on, but receive less love. We will complain much.
  • btrfs will become the default FS on popular Linux distros. Fedora will ship with a major btrfs bug that gets Chris or Bryan really worked up. OMG!
  • In a defense to Mint’s growth, and to directly appease The Linux Action Show, Ubuntu 12.04 will be GREAT!

A PVR for the Internet? Find out how this open source tool can be used to download TV off the net, or just a good clean organizational tool!

What is sick beard? It\’s a server-side application that can be used to to automate downloading of TV episode releases from USENET or Torrents. Or at the very least, to organize your media collection better.

I don\’t support piracy. But lets be honest, the failing traditional media companies continue to restrict how consumers use content. They model was outdated years ago, and today just feels draconian.

So lets start by chatting about how you can use Sick Beard just for good, clean, organization fun! Then after that, I\’ll arm you with the info you need, if you want to take things further.

Guides:

Note: When you\’re first configuring Sick Beard it may be more convenient to use Sickbeard-console.exe which will allow you to monitor the console while it\’s running.

DOUBLE Note: Sick Beard does not actually download TV episodes! It has no download functionality at all, it simply watches RSS feeds and integrates with your existing download applications if possible.

What is USENET?

Hulu’s CEO has thrown down the gauntlet in an in-depth statement that shows his outlook on the future of media delivery via the internet. It also includes some interesting data and metrics that we’ll be discussing.

Since this weekend is the BIG GAME, and none of us have much interest in it, we’ll be using Hulu’s statement as a jumping-off point to discuss some of OUR ideas on the future of Internet media delivery, as well as some really neat what-ifs, and a few glimpses at neat sci-fi tech that could change the way we get our media.

Show Notes:

HULU

Hulu’s statement by CEO Jason Kilar

  • Consumers, Advertisers and Content Creators will drive the future market directly, instead of relying upon Content Delivery Services to manage the 3 of them individually.
    • Content Delivery will become a passive market, instead of an active one.
  • Consumers are the greatest marketing force a program can have, via social media tools.
    • “Chuck” – almost cancelled after 2nd season, resurrected by fan support.
    • “The Cape” – already backed down to 10 episodes, from 13. Likely canned soon.
  • Advertisers will seek to target people directly, instead of shows as proxies for people based on assumed interest and demographics.
    • Accuracy of online media demographics greater than TV surveys.
  • Hulu’s advertisements are roughly 2x as effective as traditional TV, with ¼ of the screen time.
  • “Per-user Per-month” licensing rates instead of flat fees will enable Content Creators to get a better investment on a good product, which will drive higher quality content creation.
  • Dual revenue stream services (like Hulu + HuluPlus) will become a standard, where a portion of the service will be financed via advertisers, and another portion by consumers.
    • This is opposed to current Content Delivery, which double-dips and charges both Advertisers and Consumers for the same product at the same time, leaving both feeling cheated.

SUPERBOWL and ADVERTISING

  • Live events will continue to have a specific niche market, even after the widespread switch to On-Demand media that pretty much everybody knows is coming.
  • You can’t On-Demand a major event like the Superbowl – it must be witnessed LIVE as part of the spectacle.
  • So how can you ad incentive to a market where commercial breaks of 5-10 minutes are going to be a thing of the past?

TECH and GADGETS

A few things we’re already seeing:

Things from the future:
