We go behind the scenes & give you details on our new Linux rig builds, using OBS to stream to multiple services, the hard lessons we learned & our Linux powered production pipeline. After our year long skunkworks project this episode is living proof of how for media production under Linux has come.

Plus now we can all say ZFS is officially on Linux, Intel’s plans to make up for their Linux Skylake screw up, Ubuntu gets some snaps, Fedora “attempts” H.264 support, some games worth your time & more!

Twitch Accounts Were Compromised, All Passwords Reset

Uh oh, game streaming service Twitch has posted a short notice to its blog warning that there “may have been” some unauthorized access to some Twitch user information.

Upgrading to Windows 10 on pirated versions won’t get you a valid license

Unfortunately, the company had scaled back a bit on its plans saying that the free upgrade, though available, won’t actually change the license state of a user’s OS. In plain speak this means that if you were running a pirated copy of Windows, you’ll still be running a pirated copy even after upgrading to Windows 10.

Google Isn’t Giving Up on Glass, Eric Schmidt Says – Digits – WSJ

“It is a big and very fundamental platform for Google,” Schmidt said. “We ended the Explorer program and the press conflated this into us canceling the whole project, which isn’t true. Google is about taking risks and there’s nothing about adjusting Glass that suggests we’re ending it.”

He said Glass, like Google’s self-driving car, is a long-term project. “That’s like saying the self-driving car is a disappointment because it’s not driving me around now,” he said. “These things take time.”

Hack Air-Gapped Computers Using Heat – Slashdot

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) researchers have discovered a new method to breach air-gapped computer systems called “BitWhisper,” which enables two-way communications between adjacent, unconnected PC computers using heat. BitWhisper bridges the air-gap between the two computers, approximately 15 inches apart that are infected with malware by using their heat emissions and built-in thermal sensors to communicate. It establishes a covert, bi-directional channel by emitting heat from one PC to the other in a controlled manner.

Amazon Buys Twitch, and Why it makes sense for Amazon to buy Twitch | The Verge

The company has since confirmed the news, and a press release states Amazon will pay $970 million in cash.

Amazon is clearly very keen to get into gaming. It created its in-house gaming studio back in 2012 and has made a few lightweight Facebook and mobile games since then. It signaled it was getting more serious with the acquisition of Killer Instinct developer Double Helix Games and hiring of Kim Swift, the designer behind the classic Portal game. The company’s new Fire TV offered a selection of games created by Amazon’s in-house team and even has a Amazon joystick you can buy separately, hinting at aspirations to compete with consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation.

For Twitch, being acquired was always about finding a partner that could help it keep up with its massive growth. As The Verge reported back in May, Twitch was being offered hundreds of millions in new funding from its previous investors, but felt that it simply couldn’t scale with capital alone. It needed a company with global infrastructure already in place that it could piggyback on. YouTube certainly fit the bill. But Amazon, with its Amazon Web Services (AWS), also has the kind of international presence to ensure Twitch can stream live video to millions across every continent. Twitch in turn could be the live-streaming platform that powers everything from gaming to concerts to sporting events that play on Amazon’s family of Fire devices.

Why would Twitch choose Amazon over Google? It wasn’t the money, with Amazon’s purchase price being equal or less than Google’s reported offer. Shear wouldn’t answer that question directly, but did provide detail on why Amazon was the best fit. “One of the things that really stood out about Amazon was their approach to acquisitions. We will be a wholly owned subsidiary and and I will remain CEO,” said Shear. “They have a long term vision about how to create big opportunities in the future by investing today.”

Reading between the lines a little, it sounds like Twitch felt at Google, it would have always been YouTube’s little brother. At Amazon, it has the chance to build something from scratch, as Amazon has no user-generated or live video offerings yet. A source familiar with the deal suggested Twitch felt Amazon would give it more autonomy and bigger role in growing the gaming business.

Amazon Pounces On Twitch After Google Balks Due To Antitrust Concerns

Google was unable to close the deal, said sources familiar with the talks, because it was concerned about potential antitrust issues that could have come with the acquisition. The Mountain View, Calif. company already owns YouTube, the world’s most-visited content streaming site, which competes with Twitch to broadcast and stream live or on-demand video game sessions. One source noted that because of the concerns, Google and Twitch could not come to an agreement on the size of a potential breakup fee in case the deal did not go through.

White House cybersecurity czar brags about his lack of technical expertise

Michael Daniel is the White House’s cybersecurity coordinator, the man who “leads the interagency development of national cybersecurity strategy and policy” for the president. And in a recent interview with GovInfoSecurity, he argued that his lack of technical expertise gave him an advantage in doing that job.

“You don’t have to be a coder in order to really do well in this position,” Daniel said, when asked if his job required knowledge of the technology behind information security. “In fact, actually, I think being too down in the weeds at the technical level could actually be a little bit of a distraction.”

“You can get taken up and enamored with the very detailed aspects of some of the technical solutions,” he explained, arguing that “the real issue is looking at the broad strategic picture.”

As Princeton computer scientist Ed Felten points out, it’s hard to imagine senior policymakers with responsibility for other technical subjects making this kind of claim. Imagine a White House economic advisor arguing that experience in the weeds of economic research would be a distraction, an attorney general making that claim about time in a courtroom, or a surgeon general bragging about never having set foot in an operating room.

Huawei’s Head of Business Group Sees no Future in Tizen

In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, Richard Yu, the head of Huawei’s consumer business group, talked about the future of the global smartphone industry and how Huawei will compete against Samsung and Apple.

Mr. Yu: We have no plans to use Tizen. Some telecom carriers are pushing us to design Tizen phones but I say “no” to them. In the past we had a team to do research on Tizen but I canceled it. We feel Tizen has no chance to be successful. Even for Windows Phone it’s difficult to be successful.

We have no plans to build our own OS. It’s easy to design a new OS, but the problem is building the ecosystem around it.

Docker closes in on funding round of over $40 million

Docker, the container management startup that’s caught a __whole lot of buzz __in the enterprise tech industry, is finalizing a significant funding round worth between $40 million to $75 million, according to two sources familiar with the situation. The company is said to be valued at roughly $400 million, these sources said, but the deal is still a few weeks away from being completed.

This past January, Docker landed $15 million in a Series B investment round, bringing the company’s then total amount of funding to $26 million.

Twitch implements YouTube-like system for blocking copyrighted audio | Polygon

In an announcement, Twitch says it has partnered with software company Audible Magic, which works with the music industry, “to scan past and future [videos-on-demand] for music owned or controlled by” its clients. If that scan identifies a recorded video that infringes upon a copyright claim, the video’s audio will be muted for a 30-minute block in which that song appears.

The practice only applies to pre-recorded video on demand, Twitch says. The company won’t be scanning live broadcasts, nor will it automatically take content down.

China anti-trust regulator conducts new raids on Microsoft, Accenture

A Chinese anti-trust regulator conducted new raids on Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and partner in China Accenture PLC (ACN.N), the agency said on its website on Wednesday, after saying last week Microsoft is under investigation for anti-trust violations.

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) raided offices in Beijing and three other cities.

Microsoft has been suspected of violating China’s anti-monopoly law since June last year in relation to problems with compatibility, bundling and document authentication for its Windows operating system and Microsoft Office software, the SAIC said last week.

China is intensifying efforts to bring companies into compliance with an anti-monopoly law enacted in 2008, having in recent years taken aim at industries as varied as milk powder and jewelry.

Microsoft’s Windows ‘Threshold’ expected to add virtual desktops, drop charms | ZDNet

First up, as reported by Brad Sams at Neowin.net, Microsoft is moving toward adding virtual desktops to Threshold, the Windows release expected in the spring of 2015.

The other UI change coming to Threshold is the elimination of the Charms Bar, as first reported by Winbeta.org.

Existing “modern” Windows 8 apps will get title bars that include menus that have the charms components listed.

Microsoft tip leads to child porn arrest in Pennsylvania

A tip-off from Microsoft has led to the arrest of a man in Pennsylvania who has been charged with receiving and sharing child abuse images.

It flagged the matter after discovering that an image involving a young girl had been allegedly saved to the man’s OneDrive cloud storage account.

Microsoft’s terms and conditions for its US users explicitly state that it has the right to deploy “automated technologies to detect child pornography or abusive behavior that might harm the system, our customers, or others”.

Following the most recent case, Mark Lamb from the company’s Digital Crimes Unit released a statement.

“Child pornography violates the law as well as our terms of service, which makes clear that we use automated technologies to detect abusive behaviour that may harm our customers or others,” he wrote.

“In 2009, we helped develop PhotoDNA, a technology to disrupt the spread of exploitative images of children, which we report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as required by law.”

PhotoDNA creates a unique signature for each image, similar to a fingerprint, to help pictures be matched.

This is done by converting the picture into black-and-white, resizing it and breaking it into a grid. Each grid cell is then analysed to create a histogram describing how the colours change in intensity within it, and the information obtained becomes its “DNA”.

Google also uses PhotoDNA, alongside its own in-house technologies, to detect child abuse images. In addition, the software is used by Facebook and Twitter, among others.

Best Easy BBQ Chicken

The Night Before:
  • Combine vegetable stock, salt, water and ice in something large enough to hold your chicken, like a cooler with some room to spare (for more ice if needed for ex).
  • Place the thawed chicken (with innards removed) breast side down in brine.
  • Refrigerate or set in cool area (with ice) for 8 to 16 hours. Turn once if you can half way. No bigs.
Cookin:

Prep that bird:

  • Take that bird out of the brine, rinse it, and pat it down dry. With some paper towls.
  • Put that bird on the Beer butt holder / “poultry holder”.
  • Flavor that bird.
  • Oil that bird. I like to use Garlic oil, or butter, or bacon grease.

Prep the BBQ

  • Start your coals if you use those. I have a link to a great stater below.
  • Really don’t use lighter fluid.
  • Spread the coals out evenly.

Cook that bird

(length of cook time we vary depending on bird size)

  • Cover that bird in a foil dome. Make it legit tight, the steam trapped in there is our helper.
  • Do this before you put it on the BBQ, its hard and HURTS if you do it while its sitting on top of fire.
  • Try to hold the BBQ around 400F. Don’t stress it too much, that’s our target area.
  • Cook until clear juices are noticeable, and it smells cooked. If you have a probe you are shooting for 165F – 175F. Or if you can pull a leg off with little effort.

Goodbye from Justin.tv

Justin.tv was created by Justin Kan, Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel and Kyle Vogt in March 2007.

Twitch today announced that the Justin.tv website, mobile apps, and APIs are no longer in service. A very simple explanation is given for the shutdown: since rebranding the company to Twitch Interactive in February 2014, all resources are now focused on Twitch.tv.

The news today will almost certainly further fuel the rumors that Google is acquiring, or has already acquired, Twitch. Purchases are often followed by consolidation, as well as cutting off any excess limbs.

SynoLocker demands 0.6 Bitcoin to decrypt Synology NAS devices – CSO | The Resource for Data Security Executives

The new attack on Synology kit comes within a year of Synology NAS devices being struck by fraudulent Bitcoin mining operators, with several owners on Sunday reporting that they had found a message from the “SynoLocker Automated Decryption Service” — when accessing the main page of the Web-server for their NAS device — stating that “all important files on this NAS have been encrypted using strong cryptography”.

As one victim on Synology’s English user forum commented, the SynoLocker “service” asks for 0.6 Bitcoins to unlock the encrypted files

Report: Sprint abandons bid for T-Mobile because US would block merger | Ars Technica

Sprint owner SoftBank has been talking about buying T-Mobile US for months, but is reportedly abandoning the plan because US regulators would likely object.

AT&T tried to buy T-Mobile in 2011 but gave up in the face of opposition from the Justice Department and Federal Communications Commission. While AT&T had to pay a $4-billion breakup fee, which helped T-Mobile build out its LTE network, Sprint apparently wouldn’t suffer that fate because no deal was ever finalized.

Japan’s Softbank, which owns a controlling stake in Sprint, also acquired a majority stake in Brightstar last year.

Apple is Making Progress | Jonathan Zdziarski’s Domain

  • Apple’s fixes are clearly still a work in progress, and not all of my security concerns have been addressed yet

  • Given that a number of my threat models involved government spying, it feels good to know that Apple has taken my research seriously enough to address these concerns. Keep in mind, the threat model we’re dealing with also includes foreign governments, many of which have long histories of spying on our country’s diplomats.

  • Apple would be wise to add additional protections to ensure that sensitive data is protected in cases involving data at rest and physical security. This, too, is achievable with a small amount of effort, and will ensure that Apple is the only entity capable of extracting sensitive, encrypted data from the device. To do this, Apple’s file_relay service, which they claim is for “diagnostics purposes” would need to be closed off, or at least fixed so that it doesn’t bypass the user’s backup password and the encryption it is tied to. Additionally, the house_arrest service would need to be patched so that it doesn’t allow sandbox access while the device is locked, or some other creative approach.
