Apple Reports Record March Quarter Results of $13.6B Profit on $58B Revenue, Boosts Dividend and Buybacks

Apple Revenue by Quater

Apple today announced financial results for the second fiscal quarter and first calendar quarter of 2015. For the quarter, Apple posted revenue of $58 billion and net quarterly profit of $13.6 billion

Aside from revenue and profit, Apple disclosed sales numbers or revenue for the these categories:

  • iPhone: 61.1 million units
  • iPad: 12.6 million units
  • Mac: 4.5 million units

Totals:

  • Revenue: $58 billion
  • EPS: $2.33 per share

Pour one out: The Nexus 7 is finally dead | TechRadar

Want to buy yourself a Nexus 7? It’s not going to happen. Google has apparently given up on selling the 7-inch device directly to consumers, choosing instead to focus on the Nexus 9.

But the bad news is that the larger, newer tablet isn’t hitting the heights the Nexus slate managed during 2013 and 2014, with Google’s earnings call confirming that the tablet isn’t performing as well as its predecessor.

In fact, both the Nexus 9 and smartphone Nexus 6 aren’t selling in the same numbers that Google has hoped they would, with the search giant confirming that the loss of Nexus sales had led to a drop in revenue quarter over quarter.

Uber is bringing its food delivery service to New York City and Chicago | The Verge

An Uber representative told The Verge that UberEats has its own dedicated drivers. Lunch options will range from $9 to $12, while dinner options will range from $10 to $15. The Uber rep said meals come with a $3 delivery fee ($4 in New York City), regardless of the number of meals you order.

OPSEC (Operational Security) for Activists and Journalists

  • Using encryption is a good thing, but if you need to hide from advanced adversaries, like foreign governments you are protecting against or reporting on, you need more than just encryption to make sure you don’t get “disappeared”
  • The FBI has identified people even when they were using tor
  • “The only protection against communication systems is to avoid their use.” —Cryptome [32], Communications Privacy Folly, June 13, 2012
  • Anti-forensics [33] is all about reducing both the quantity and quality of information that adversaries acquire. In other words, if spies succeed in breaching your computer then give them as little useful information as possible. One way to achieve this is through compartmentalization, a technique honed to a fine edge by intelligence outfits like the KGB.
  • Especially important secret government messages are still passed by courier, even the government doesn’t trust crypto 100%
  • “Avoid patterns (geographic, chronological, etc.). Arbitrarily relocate to new spots during the course of a phone call. Stay in motion. Phone calls should be as short as possible so that the amount of data collected by surveillance equipment [44] during the call’s duration is minimized. This will make it more difficult for spies to make accurate predictions.”
  • “Carrying additional mobile devices (e.g. surface tablet, second cell phone) creates the risk that the peripheral hardware may undermine anonymity through correlation. Finally, pay for items using cash when operational. Credit card transactions are like a big red flag”
  • “If spies somehow captures a secure cell phone and are able to siphon data off of it, one potential countermeasure is to flood the device with false information. Skillful application of this technique can lead spies on a goose chase. When Edward Snowden was fleeing Hong Kong he intentionally bought a plane ticket to India with his own credit card in an effort to throw pursuers off his track.”
  • “In summary, expect security tools to fail, compartmentalize to contain damage and apply the Grugq’s core tenets of anti-forensics. Don’t put blind faith in technology. Focus your resources on maintaining rigorous procedures. When things get dicey it’ll be your training and preparation that keep you secure.”

How I accessed employee settings on the Uber app

  • While debugging an upcoming app, Nathan Mock an iOS Engineer, “accidentally” got a closer glimpse into Uber’s iOS app internals.
  • Using Charles, a tool that allows you to monitor and analyze traffic between a client and the internet. You are able to self sign requests, effectively allowing you to view the requests in plain text. With the requests flowing in, he noticed a request made every 5 seconds.
  • One particular request of interest is used by Uber to receive and communicate rider location, driver availability, application configurations settings and more to devices.
  • Upon inspecting the response, he discovered the key isAdmin, which was set to false for his particular account. Charles allows you to define rewrite rules, so he rewrote the response changing, the value for isAdmin to true, curious to see the effects it would have on the app. He perused through the app with the new value applied… lo and behold, he stumbled upon the Employee Settings screen from the About screen
  • Uber’s app is extremely dynamic. Their client’s architecture allows them to customize the app’s UI to certain geographical areas, riders, and even individual devices, allowing them to do things such as deliver kittens, deliver food, offer rides on helicopters, and of course, change prices…all without re-submitting the binary for approval to the app store. This is common practice for many client-server applications, a neat way to target certain features/functionality to a limited subset of users without the burden/time constraints of submitting an app for review.
  • If a malicious developer wanted to get a forbidden feature or functionality past the review team, it is possible to hide the feature behind a “switch”, turning it off during the review process only to enable it after approved, all server side. If their purpose is to control the feature set of apps that get into the store, it can be bypassed through this type of client-server configuration architecture. Apple certainly has the power to take an app down once they make the discovery but before they make that discovery, it is out in the wild.
  • As you can see, your traffic is not 100% safe and anyone can inspect your requests and responses (even with HTTPS), so it’s a good idea to always utilize defensive programming. A malicious third party could use this flaw to exploit the app in ways unforeseen. Even though Uber utilized HTTPS, there are still inherent flaws with the protocol that allows one to access certain screens meant for employees only.
  • Uber recently suffered a data breach that leaked information about 50,000 drivers
  • The breach apparently occurred on May 13 2014, was not discovered until September 17 2014, and was not announced until February 27 2015.
  • “Uber says it will offer a free one-year membership of Experian’s ProtectMyID Alert”
  • It turns out, Uber might have accidently stored sensitive database keys on a public github page, is sueing Github to get the IP address of those who accessed the information

Exclusive: Google and Uber Are Going to War Over Taxis

Uber faces an ever-growing cast of adversaries that includes dubious regulators, litigious drivers, hostile members of the press, and some well-funded rivals. But the most significant threat to the app-based transportation company may be much closer to home: one of its biggest investors, Google.

Google Ventures, the search giant’s venture capital arm, invested $258 million in Uber in August 2013. It was Google Ventures’ largest investment deal ever, and the company put more money into Uber’s next funding round less than a year later. Back then, it was easy for observers to imagine Google teaming closely with Uber, or even one day acquiring it. David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer and senior vice president of corporate development, joined the Uber board of directors in 2013 and has served on it ever since.

Uber Chases Google in Self-Driving Cars With Carnegie Mellon Deal – Digits – WSJ

But a person familiar with the matter said news that Google is developing an app to rival Uber has been blown out of proportion. The person said a Google engineer has been testing an internal app that helps Google employees carpool to work, and the app isn’t associated with the company’s driverless cars program.

Two people familiar with the matter said they weren’t aware that Drummond had been asked by anyone to step down and believe he would do so of his own volition if he sees a potential conflict. One of these people added that Uber probably doesn’t want to give information to a potential competitor, but wasn’t aware of any plans to cut off Google’s access to Uber information. The other person said that Uber and Google had been working at arms length for some time and that it was unlikely Uber would stop using Google Maps to help power its service.

Uber declined to comment on Drummond’s board status. A Google spokeswoman referred to a cryptic tweet the company posted late Monday: “We think you’ll find Uber and Lyft work quite well. We use them all the time.” Lyft is a car-hailing service that competes with Uber.

Google is still working closely with the car-hailing services. Uber is integrated directly into the Google Maps smartphone app, allowing users seeking directions to jump into Uber’s app to call a car. Separately, Lyft has worked with Google to integrate its service with Android Wear, Google’s operating system for smartwatches, as well as Google Now, the company’s smart digital assistant app.

RadioShack in Talks to Sell Half Its Stores to Sprint, Shutter the Rest – Bloomberg Business

The locations sold to Sprint would operate under the
wireless carrier’s name, meaning RadioShack would cease to exist
as a stand-alone retailer, said the people, who asked not to be
identified because the talks aren’t public.

Amazon in Talks to Buy Some of RadioShack’s Stores – Bloomberg Business

The possible move, discussed as part of RadioShack’s
looming trip to bankruptcy court, would represent Amazon’s
biggest push into traditional retail. Amazon joins other
potential bidders, including Sprint Corp. and the investment
group behind Brookstone, in evaluating RadioShack stores, people
familiar with the situation said. RadioShack has more than 4,000
U.S. locations and is moving toward a deal to sell a portion and
close the rest, according to some of the people. Sprint has
discussed buying 1,300 to 2,000, they said.

Apple to Convert Failed Arizona Sapphire Plant Into Data Center – Bloomberg Business

Apple Inc. plans to invest $2 billion to
convert an Arizona factory into a data center after the facility
failed to produce sapphire screens for iPhones.

GT Advanced Technologies Inc. filed for bankruptcy
protection in October after the supplier wasn’t able to produce
screens of usable quality at the Apple-owned factory in Mesa,
near Phoenix. The smaller company wasn’t able to fulfill the
terms of an agreement with Apple.

The more than 1.3 million-square-foot building, which was
once a solar-panel factory, was a key part of Apple’s efforts to
bring manufacturing back to the U.S. after years of relying on
Asian suppliers to build the company’s iPhones, iPads and Mac
computers. While Apple had promised to bring jobs to the area
even after the bankruptcy, the data center will probably employ
fewer staff compared with an operation churning out components
for iPhones.

F.C.C. Chief Wants to Override State Laws Curbing Community Net Services – NYTimes.com

The proposal focuses on laws in two states, North Carolina and Tennessee, but it would create a policy framework for other states. About 21 states, by the F.C.C.’s count, have laws that restrict the activities of community broadband services. The initiative by Mr. Wheeler, if endorsed by the full commission, would be the first time the F.C.C. has tried to override such state laws.

Pebble has now sold over 1 million smartwatches | The Verge

According to Migicovsky, Pebble plans to carry its momentum through 2015 with new products and a new software platform that is unlike anything else used on smartwatches to date. While Google and Apple’s smartwatches have been focused on app paradigms, similar to smartphones, Pebble’s new software will apparently be quite different. “We’ve found a new framework to use as an interaction model on the watch,” boasts Migicovsky, before adding that while apps will continue to exist on Pebble, they won’t be the main focus of the platform. “It doesn’t look like what we have today, and it doesn’t look like what’s on your smartphone,” added Migicovsky. Following the launch of the Pebble Steel in January, the company used 2014 as an “investment year,” increasing its headcount from around 30 to over 100 and bringing aboard some of the webOS TV design team from LG, many of whom have been tasked with building the new software platform.

KreepyUncle here, sorry if this is a late submission but I didn’t think of it till my wife started doing the shopping for Thanksgiving. We usually stay at home and do a big feast. When she start cooking the turkey Thanksgiving morning she puts another frozen turkey in the refrigerator to defrost,,,,,, this is so we can make the same feast again when all the original food is gone. Double Thanksgiving feasts is our tradition.

“God View”: Uber Investigates Its Top New York Executive For Privacy Violations

Uber said Tuesday that it is investigating its top New York executive for tracking a BuzzFeed News reporter without her permission in violation of what the transit giant says has long been its privacy policy. The company also published its privacy policy for the first time on Tuesday, though it said the policy had always been in effect.

Uber took both actions in the wake of a BuzzFeed News story that revealed that the reporter’s ride had been tracked without her permission and that another Uber executive had suggested the company might smear journalists who wrote critically of Uber. The executive who suggested digging into the private lives of journalists, Emil Michael, said his comments were “wrong” and that he regrets them.

Tracking customers is easy using an internal company tool called “God View,” two former Uber employees told BuzzFeed News. They said God View, which shows the location of Uber vehicles and customers who have requested a car, was widely available to corporate employees. Drivers, who operate as contractors, do not have access to God View.

Early this November, one of the reporters of this story, Johana Bhuiyan, arrived to Uber’s New York headquarters in Long Island City for an interview with Josh Mohrer, the general manager of Uber New York. Stepping out of her vehicle — an Uber car — she found Mohrer waiting for her. “There you are,” he said, holding his iPhone and gesturing at it. “I was tracking you.”

Mohrer never asked for permission to track her.

11 things we just learned about how the Apple Watch works | The Verge

An iPhone is required — at (almost) all times. In Apple’s own words, Watch apps extend iOS apps. “You begin your Watch app development with your existing iOS app, which must support iPhone.”

Native apps are coming next year. Important footnote from the press release: “Starting later next year, developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch.”

There could be more Watch sizes later. “Unlike iOS, where you place views at a coordinate on the screen,” Apple says, “with WatchKit, objects automatically flow downward from the top left corner of the screen, filling the available space.”

There are two types of Apple Watch notifications. The “Short Look” is only seen briefly when you raise your wrist — it’s an app icon, an app name, and some brief information. If the wearer keeps their wrist raised long enough — “after a moment,” according to Apple — the screen changes to a “Long Look” notification, which provides more information and is more customizable. For Long Looks, the app icon and name move to the top of the screen, and wearers can scroll down through the interface to use custom actions (such as “comment” or “favorite”) or dismiss the notification.

Glances. We already knew some of this, but now it’s well documented. In addition to the app itself and the notification, developers can make “Glances” for quick view of information (e.g. time, weather, tasks left). All the information must fit on a single screen and is read-only, but you’ll be able to tap it to enter the corresponding app.

No custom gestures. The interface is more or less locked to what Apple wants: vertical swipes scrolls through the screen, horizontal swipes go between pages, taps indicate selection, “force touch” opens up a context menu, and that digital crown scrolls through pages way faster. Additionally an edge swipe left goes back or up a page (“back to the parent interface controller,” if we’re being technical), and an edge swipe up opens the “Glance” view.

Messaging App Viber Takes A Step Into Social Networking With New Public Chats Feature | TechCrunch

Today Viber, the messaging app with 209 million users, is taking a different approach: it is launching Public Chats, giving users a way of using its direct messaging and voice services app to broadcast to the world at large.

Public Chats will see the introduction of live conversation streams — from celebrities, or as CEO Talmon Marco told me, other interesting people “like taxi drivers!” — that will be open for any follower to see, but not necessarily participate in. Users will only be able to jump in and talk in Public Chats if the account in question is in their contacts.

Baltimore Police balk when pressed by judge on phone tracking capabilities – Baltimore Sun

Baltimore prosecutors withdrew key evidence in a robbery case Monday rather than reveal details of the cellphone tracking technology police used to gather it.

The surprise turn in Baltimore Circuit Court came after a defense attorney pressed a city police detective to reveal how officers had tracked his client.

City police Det. John L. Haley, a member of a specialized phone tracking unit, said officers did not use the controversial device known as a stingray. But when pressed on how phones are tracked, he cited what he called a “nondisclosure agreement” with the FBI.

Defense attorney Joshua Insley still believes that police used a stingray to find Taylor. He cited a letter in which prosecutors said they were prohibited by the Department of Justice from disclosing information about methods used in their investigation.

The portable device was developed for the military to help zero in on cellphones. It mimics a cellphone tower to force nearby phones to connect to it.

Records shows that the Baltimore Police Department purchased a stingray for $133,000 in 2009.

Uber Executive Suggests Digging Up Dirt On Journalists

A senior executive at Uber suggested that the company should consider hiring a team of opposition researchers to dig up dirt on its critics in the media — and specifically to spread details of the personal life of a female journalist who has criticized the company.

The executive, Emil Michael, made the comments in a conversation he later said he believed was off the record. In a statement through Uber Monday evening, he said he regretted them and that they didn’t reflect his or the company’s views.

Michael, who Kalanick described as “one of the top deal guys in the Valley” when he joined the company, is a charismatic and well-regarded figure who came to Uber from Klout. He also sits on a board that advises the Department of Defense.

Over dinner, he outlined the notion of spending “a million dollars” to hire four top opposition researchers and four journalists. That team could, he said, help Uber fight back against the press — they’d look into “your personal lives, your families,” and give the media a taste of its own medicine.

In a statement through an Uber spokeswoman, Michael said: “The remarks attributed to me at a private dinner — borne out of frustration during an informal debate over what I feel is sensationalistic media coverage of the company I am proud to work for — do not reflect my actual views and have no relation to the company’s views or approach. They were wrong no matter the circumstance and I regret them.”

The spokeswoman, Nairi Hourdajian, said the company does not do “oppo research” of any sort on journalists, and has never considered doing it. She also said Uber does not consider Lacy’s personal life fair game, or believe that she is responsible for women being sexually assaulted.

FCC calls AT&T’s fiber bluff, demands detailed construction plans | Ars Technica

Two days after AT&T claimed it has to “pause” a 100-city fiber build because of uncertainty over network neutrality rules, the Federal Communications Commission today asked the company to finally detail its vague plans for fiber construction.

Despite making all sorts of bold promises about bringing fiber to customers and claiming its fiber construction is contingent on the government giving it what it wants, AT&T has never detailed its exact fiber plans. For one thing, AT&T never promised to build in all of the 100 cities and towns it named as potential fiber spots. The company would only build in cities and towns where local leaders gave AT&T whatever it wanted. In all likelihood, only a small portion of the 100 municipalities were likely to get fiber, and nobody knows which ones.

Today, the FCC challenged AT&T to finally reveal some facts about its fiber plans in a letter to AT&T Senior VP Robert Quinn.

Ferris asked Quinn for a response by November 21. AT&T told Re/code that it is “happy to respond to the questions posed by the FCC in its review of our merger with DirecTV. As we made clear earlier this week, we remain committed to our DirecTV merger-related build-out plans.”

Tor eyes crowdfunding campaign to upgrade its hidden services

The Tor Project is currently considering a crowdfunding campaign to overhaul the network’s anonymous websites after years of design and security criticisms, Tor executive director Andrew Lewman told the Daily Dot.

In the last 15 months, several of the biggest anonymous websites on the Tor network have been identified and seized by police. In most cases, no one is quite sure how it happened.

The details of such a campaign have yet to be revealed.

Verizon denies plan to launch its own Android app store (update) | The Verge

Verizon is going to launch its own app store in an effort to compete with the Google Play Store on Android devices, claims a report from The Information. The new store will be available globally and is the result of a partnership with other carriers and hardware makers, says the report. In 2010, Verizon Wireless launched a similar app store for Android and BlackBerry smartphones in the US, but it shuttered it in January 2013. The Information says the discussions for a new app store are still in an early stage, and there is not a concrete date for when it would launch.

However, Recode received a statement from Verizon saying that the carrier had no plans to offer a new app store. “We have no plans to do that,” Verizon spokeswoman Debra Lewis said. “Been there. Done that.” Amir Efrati from _The Information _tweeted the following in response: “I and @theinformation stand by this report 100%.” Efrait also said that “Verizon’s comment is misleading.”

The Information claims that this new effort is a response to recent cutbacks from Google in revenue sharing with carriers and hardware makers for apps sold through the Google Play Store. Verizon would be stemming future losses with its own app store, as revenues from app store sales are expected to grow significantly over the next few years. The report says that Verizon would also use data like location, time of day, and social indicators to recommend apps to users.

Brazil Court Issues Injunction Against Secret And Calls For App To Be Remotely Wiped | TechCrunch

A court in Brazil has ruled (via UOL) that Apple and Google must remove Secret, the anonymous social networking app, from their mobile software stores — and also from user devices where it’s already installed. The court has issued a preliminary injunction in the case, pending the results of a final ruling, as a result of a complaints by users harmed by rumors spread via the app, who said that the app was used to share an “intimate photo” of him, which included personal identifying information including his full name and telephone number.

The injunction actually goes so far as to require that the companies remotely wipe the app from existing devices. That’s a tall order, of course, but the court has also applied a fine of around $9,000 per day following a 10-day grace period in case the rules haven’t been followed.

Uber Opens Its API With 11 Launch Partners, Including OpenTable, TripAdvisor, and United Airlines | TechCrunch

Today, the company is announcing its API will become available to app developers, with 11 launch partners already signed up.

For Uber, the introduction of its API is designed to increase reach and get it in front of lots of new potential users. The company is in 150 cities and nearly 50 countries around the world, but there are untold number of users who might not have tried its service. Showing up in other apps that those users already have installed is a simple way to introduce them to getting an Uber on-demand.

While it’s trying to appeal to as many app developers as possible, to start Uber is launching with 11 API partners that have already committed to introducing Uber to their users. Those apps include Expensify, Hinge, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, Momento, OpenTable, Starbucks, Tempo, Time Out, TripAdvisor, TripCase, and United Airlines.

Samsung’s first Nook tablet arrives at Barnes & Noble today for $179 | The Verge

Samsung is becoming Barnes & Noble’s first partner to create a Nook-branded tablet today with the unveiling and release of the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook. The name is a mouthful, but it basically means that the tablet is a rebranded version of Samsung’s existing Galaxy Tab 4 tablet — part of its low-end line — that’s now been customized with some Nook software. The tablet has a 7-inch, 1280 x 800 display and will sell for $179.

Blizzard Not Expecting Major World Of Warcraft Growth

In a recent interview with MCV, World of Warcraft lead designer Tom Chilton admitted that Blizzard isn’t expecting to see the MMORPG grow like it did prior to the Cataclysm release. That’s likely because the subscription numbers have been on a steady decline since 4Q 2010

As of Q2 2014, World of Warcraft had 6.8 million subscribers. The upcoming fifth expansion pack, Warlords of Draenor, is expected to bring some players back. Previously, Blizzard indicated that it’s not unusual to see customers cancel their subscription until a new expansion arrives. Once that’s consumed, they will cancel again and wait for new content.

Last week, Blizzard announced that the upcoming Warlords of Draenor will be released on November 13, 2014.
