How to Tweak Windows 10 and Fix Its Minor Annoyances

Windows 10 resolves a lot of the annoyances left over from Windows 8, but it also comes with a few of its own—little as most of them may be. Here’s how to tweak a few of the OS’s new features and fix its little quirks.

How to control Windows 10 notifications in the Action Center

To add, disable, or enable notifications, begin by clicking the Action Center icon located on the right-hand side of the Windows taskbar. Then, click the All Settings _button with the gear icon and select _System _in the top-left corner of the window. Afterward, click _Notifications & Actions.

De-Mystifying the Dark Corners of Windows: The Registry, DLLs, and More Explained

If your Windows chops extend in any capacity beyond novice, you’ve no doubt encountered the ever-cryptic Windows Registry, DLL files, User Account Control, and other tools with seemingly dark and mysterious powers. Here, we’ll explain some of Windows’ most confusing features, so you know exactly what’s happening when you go to edit them

Windows 10 Keyboard Shortcuts at a Glance – Sebastian Klenk’s Blog – Site Home – TechNet Blogs

In this blog post, I’d like to share a list of Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts with you. I tested the below shortcuts in the current build of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build No. 10122 — and I couldn’t live without them

  • Win+Tab: View all virtual desktops at a glance.

  • Win+Q or Win+S: Open Cortana.

  • Win+I: Open Windows 10 Settings.

  • Win+A: Open the notification center.
  • Win+Ctrl+D: Create a new virtual desktop.
  • Win+Ctrl+F4: Close the current virtual desktop.
  • Win+Ctrl+[Left/Right]: Switch between virtual desktops.
  • Win+G: Open the Game Bar, for taking screenshots/recording video game play.

  • The Best New Features of Windows 10

Privacy Issues:

Microsoft’s new small print – how your personal data is (ab)used

By default, when signing into Windows with a Microsoft account, Windows syncs some of your settings and data with Microsoft servers, for example “web browser history, favorites, and websites you have open” as well as “saved app, website, mobile hotspot, and Wi-Fi network names and passwords”.

Users who chose to enable Microsoft’s personal assistant software “Cortana” have to live with the following invasion to their privacy: “To enable Cortana to provide personalized experiences and relevant suggestions, Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more.” But this is not all, as this piece of software also analyses undefined “speech data”: “we collect your voice input, as well your name and nickname, your recent calendar events and the names of the people in your appointments, and information about your contacts including names and nicknames.”

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to”, for example, “protect their customers” or “enforce the terms governing the use of the services”.

According to Zach Epstein of BGR News, all of Windows 10’s features that could be considered invasions of privacy are enabled by default. Signing in with your Microsoft email account means Windows is reading your emails, contacts and calendar data. The new Edge browser serves you personalized ads. Solitaire now comes with ads. Using Cortana — the voice-driven assistant that represents Redmond’s answer to Apple’s Siri — reportedly _”plays fast and loose with your data.” _

“I am pretty surprised by the far-reaching data collection that Microsoft seems to want,” web developer Jonathan Porta wrote on his blog. “I am even more surprised by the fact that the settings all default to incredibly intrusive. I am certain that most individuals will just accept the defaults and have no idea how much information they are giving away.”

  • As examples, Porta cited Microsoft having access to contacts, calendar details, and “other associated input data” such as “typing and inking” by default. The operating system also wants access to user locations and location history, both of which could be provided not just to Microsoft, but to its “trusted partners.

“Who are the trusted partners? By whom are they trusted? I am certainly not the one doing any trusting right now,” Porta wrote, describing the default privacy options as “vague and bordering on scary.”

  • Alec Meer of the ‘Rock, Paper, Shotgun’ blog pointed out this passage in Microsoft’s 12,000-word, 45-page terms of use agreement:

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to.”

  • While most people are used to ads as the price of accessing free content, writes Meer, Microsoft is not making it clear enough that they are “gathering and storing vast amounts of data on your computing habits,” not just browser data.

  • Opting out of all these default settings requires navigating 13 different screens and a separate website, the bloggers have found.

Windows 10 Shares Your Wi-Fi With Contacts — Krebs on Security

while Wi-Fi Sense is turned on by default, users still have to explicitly choose to share a network. “When you first connect to a password-protected Wi-Fi network, you choose if you want to share access to that network with your contacts,” Bott writes. Nevertheless, many users are conditioned to click “yes” to these prompts, and shared networks will be shared to all Facebook, Outlook, and Skype contacts (users can’t pick individual contacts; the access is shared with all contacts on a social network). Updated the lead to clarify that users are prompted to share.

Noah’s Experience with Windows 10

Stuff that worked

  • Windows Installed

  • First Windows I didn’t have to fight with my HP1100

  • UI seems improved from Windows 8 – closer for enterprise use

  • Live Tiles are cute

  • Google Calendar works with app

Stuff that didn’t work

  • GIMP Photo Editing software was not available.

  • Virt Manager was not available

  • No way to use Yubikey SSH key natively, could not get it setup in PuTTy

  • Audacity hung up constantly when exporting to .Mp3

  • Couldn’t find Brasero for Windows

  • Windows uses torrents – but for updates only

Chris Experiences

  • Fails to detects Bonobo hard drive. First time any OS has ever done this.

  • Basic system customization and settings are locked out until you activate Windows 10. This limited my ability to really test some important features, thus I was forced to buy a retail copy.

  • It took quite a bit of work to get audio working, including multiple failed attempts to install a driver from Windows Update.. And then failed attempts to install a driver from Dell.

  • Only after a BIOS update did the driver from Windows Update take.

  • Many parts of the system are not High DPI. Error screens/msgs, Control Panel Applets, Installers, all over the place. Very hit and Miss.

  • Network and Sharing Center detected the JB Prod network as a “public” network, and thus applies all kinds of network restrictions for file sharing, discovery, firewall, etc. How do you fix this?

  • The new System setting screen feels like a knockoff of Plasma 5 desktop.

  • Old control panel still lurks, giving users in some cases up to three places to change a setting

  • Windows Update fails to install a Synaptics Driver update for Dell Touchpad, giving me nothing but a cryptic hex error. Super user friendly.

Samsung Finds, Fixes Bug In Linux Trim Code – Slashdot

After many complaints that Samsung SSDs corrupted data when used with Linux, Samsung found out that the bug was in the Linux kernel and submitted a patch to fix it. It turns out that kernels without the final fix can corrupt data if the system is using linux md raid with raid0 or raid10 and issues trim/discard commands (either fstrim or by the filesystem itself). The vendor of the drive did not matter and the previous blacklisting of Samsung drives for broken queued trim support can be most likely lifted after further tests. According to this post the bug has been around for a long time.

Hackers Can Disable a Sniper Rifle—Or Change Its Target

At the Black Hat hacker conference in two weeks, security researchers Runa Sandvik and Michael Auger plan to present the results of a year of work hacking a pair of $13,000 TrackingPoint self-aiming rifles. The married hacker couple have developed a set of techniques that could allow an attacker to compromise the rifle via its Wi-Fi connection and exploit vulnerabilities in its software. Their tricks can change variables in the scope’s calculations that make the rifle inexplicably miss its target, permanently disable the scope’s computer, or even prevent the gun from firing.

Kodi 15.0 – Isengard – One Release to Rule Them All

We are proud to announce the release of Kodi 15.0. No new name this time around, but many new features that cover requests both more than 5 years old and less than 5 months old. Let’s take a quick look at a few.

Kodi/XBMC was launched in 2002 as an MPlayer-based Xbox hack called Xbox Media Player. After a merger with the YAMP (Yet Another Media Player) project, it re-emerged in 2003 as the Windows-focused Xbox Media Center (XBMC). In 2007, a Linux port was begun, which appeared in final form in 2009 in D-Link’s Boxee Box media player.

The Macintosh port emerged around the same time, followed by an iOS version. Earlier this year, Kodi dropped support for the AppleTV2 due to poor performance resulting from Apple’s lack of support.
The framework has taken off in recent years with the explosion in IPTV cord-cutting services designed for laptops, media players, Smart TVs, and mobile devices. The software provides access to a huge variety of videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files, called up from the Internet or local and network storage media.

Kodi lets you watch and record live TV, and it supports integration with backends including MediaPortal, MythTV, NextPVR, Tvheadend, VDR, and its prime competitor: Windows Media Center. The software provides a consistent UI ranging from phones to 10-foot TVs, and lets you apply custom skins.

In addition to adding Android support, Kodi 15 provides a new chapter selector window, a more flexible adaptive seeking feature, more convenient audio and subtitle options, and more frequent language add-on updates. The add-on manager, meanwhile, has a revamped UI.

This entire work is not related to UI, instead it is a major reorganization of the code. By the end of this cleanup phase, end users won’t notice any difference.

The hidden structure of the Apple keynote

The Apple Keynotes podcast on the iTunes Store lists 27 events since Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone on Jan. 9, 2007. (A few are missing.)

They are an average 88 minutes long, with a similar look and feel—a minimalist slide presentation with live demos from Apple executives and industry leaders, punctuated by videos explaining Apple’s design and manufacturing processes

When Steve Jobs was running Apple and healthy, he dominated the stage. During Jobs’ finest performance—his 2007 iPhone “Stevenote”—he spent more than 90 minutes on stage, with breaks only to invite partners up for remarks, including then-Google CEO (and then-Apple board member) Eric Schmidt.

Cook usually spends less than 20 minutes onstage per event

On average, it has taken about 45 minutes to get to that part. But more recently, it has been shorter. With plenty to cover tomorrow—supposedly including two new iPhones, a wearable device, and a payments system—there shouldn’t be much filler content.

More faces of FreeBSD

  • Another installment of the FoF series
  • This time they talk with Reid Linnemann who works at Spectra Logic
  • Gives a history of all the different jobs he\’s done, all the programming languages he knows
  • Mentions how he first learned about FreeBSD, actually pretty similar to Kris\’ story
  • \”I used the system to build and install ports, and explored, getting actively involved in the mailing lists and forums, studying, passing on my own limited knowledge to those who could benefit from it. I pursued my career in the open source software world, learning the differences in BSD and GNU licensing and the fragmented nature of Linux distributions, realizing the FreeBSD community was more mature and well distributed about industry, education, and research. Everything steered me towards working with and on FreeBSD.\”
  • Now works on FreeBSD as his day job
  • The second one covers Brooks Davis
  • FreeBSD committer since 2001 and core team member from 2006 through 2012
  • He\’s helped drive our transition from a GNU toolchain to a more modern LLVM-based toolchain
  • \”One of the reasons I like FreeBSD is the community involved in the process of building a principled, technically-advanced operating system platform. Not only do we produce a great product, but we have fun doing it.\”
  • Lots more in the show notes

We cannot trust Intel and Via’s chip-based crypto

  • We woke up to see FreeBSD on the front page of The Register, Ars Technica and Hacker News for their strong stance on security and respecting privacy – good to see big news outlets giving credit where it\’s due
  • At the EuroBSDCon dev summit, there was some discussion about removing support for hardware-based random number generators.
  • FreeBSD\’s /dev/random got some updates and, for 10.0, will no longer allow the use of Intel or VIA\’s hardware RNGs as the sole point of entropy
  • \”It will still be possible to access hardware random number generators, that is, RDRAND, Padlock etc., directly by inline assembly or by using OpenSSL from userland, if required, but we cannot trust them any more\”
  • Hopefully others will follow FreeBSD\’s example very soon

OpenSMTPD 5.4.1 released

  • The OpenBSD developers came out with major a new version
  • Improved config syntax (please check your smtpd.conf before upgrading)
  • Adds support for TLS Perfect Forward Secrecy and custom CA certificate
  • MTA, Queue and SMTP server improvements
  • SNI support confirmed for the next version
  • Check the show notes for the full list of changes, pretty huge release
  • Watch Episode 3 for an interview we did with the developers

More getting to know your portmgr

  • The portmgr secretary, Thomas Abthorpe, interviews… himself!
  • Joined as -secretary in March 2010, upgraded to full member in March 2011
  • His inspiration for using BSD is \”I wanted to run a webserver, and I wanted something free. I was going to use something linux, then met up with a former prof from university, and shared my story with him. He told me FreeBSD was the way to go.\”
  • Mentions how he loves that anyone can contribute and watch it \”go live\”
  • The second one covers Baptiste Daroussin
  • The reason for his nick, bapt, is \”Baptiste is too long to type\”
  • There\’s even a video of bapt joining the team!

News Roundup

Introducing configinit

  • CloudInit is \”a system originally written for Ubuntu which performs configuration of a system at boot-time based on user-data provided via EC2\”
  • Wasn\’t ideal for FreeBSD since it requires python and is designed around the concept of configuring a system by running commands (rather than editing configuration files)
  • Colin Percival came up with configinit, a FreeBSD alternative
  • Alongside his new \”firstboot-pkgs\” port, it can spin up a webserver in 120 seconds from \”launch\” of the EC2 instance
  • Check the show notes for full blog post

OpenSSH support for Ed25519 and bcrypt keys

  • New Ed25519 key support (hostkeys and user identities) using the public domain ed25519 reference code
  • SSH private keys were encrypted with a symmetric key that\’s just an MD5 of their password
  • Now they\’ll be using bcrypt by default
  • We\’ll get more into this in next week\’s interview

The FreeBSD challenge

  • A member of the Linux foundation blogs about using FreeBSD
  • Goes through all the beginner steps, has to \”unlearn\” some of his Linux ways
  • Only a few posts as of this time, but it\’s a continuing series that may be helpful for switchers

Show Notes:

Intro

  • Happy First Contact day to all STO players
  • Dan Stahl & Brandon hosted a Q&A in the RedAlert chat channel on First Contact Day
  • Utopia Planetia social zone introduced
  • Replica of the Phoenix Warp 1 craft made available as a space pet
  • New KDF mission released which is an homage to “Predator” in many ways

News

  • First Contact Day Q&A – Highlights:]
  • Gates Of Stovokor Interview with Daniel Stahl
  • They (KDF players) see the KDF as the Horde in WoW and wonder why it is doesn’t have its own zones with an entirely separate content track unto itself. The game was just not made to be that at launch. The only way we’ll ever get there is if we spin up an entirely separate team of content designers to go back and make a few years’ worth of content and release it as an expansion.
  • CBS believe that only around 20% of Star Trek fans would be interested in playing a Klingon character and Daniel Stahl has previously stated that 18% of STO players actively gaming with the KDF faction. That was believed to be too low a number to warrant a lot of development time on the faction due to a low return on investment. It is unlikely that the Romulans / Cardassians have a higher percentage of fandom and as such, does that mean that we will only get to see a third faction in STO if they add a separate development team with the goal of producing a paid expansion for a F2P title. Lord of the Rings Online is likely a good example of this sort of effort as they recently released a paid expansion called War In The North.
  • Link to the study Perpetual Entertainment Study
  • Would you be willing to pay for an expansion which would add KDF / Romulan / Cardassian faction content?

Interview with Thomas “The Cryptic Cat” Marrone

  • What does the Cryptic Cat do?
  • The original minigame concept graphics he created
  • The “patches” he has introduced to the game
  • Multiple areas of the UI that he has worked on
  • Trek design inspiration

Duty Officer Guide Part 1

  • What is a Doff? Junior officers and crew on your starship.

  • When do we get Doffs? FED at lvl 8 and KDF at lvl 23

  • Doffs are essentially “trading cards” that you constantly swap for better ones

  • Doff Characteristics: Faction / Species / Quality / Rank / Department / Specialisation

  • Doff Traits: Each duty officer can have between 1 and 5 traits which each possibly affecting the outcome of any mission that Doff is assigned to e.g. Unruly send on a diplomacy mission

  • How many Doffs can you have? 100 default, 400 max using c-store purchases

  • 25 Duty Officer slots for 180 C-Store points (per character)

  • 100 Duty Officer slots for 580 C-Store points (per character)

  • Duty Officer assignments give item rewards and commendation XP

  • Commendation XP (CXP) has categories: Diplomacy (FED) / Marauding (KDF) / Science / Engineering / Military / Exploration / Espionage / Medical / Colonial / Trade / Development / Recruitment

  • Commendation XP allows you to achieve Commendation Ranks

  • Everyone starts off as Rank 0 in each CXP category

  • Rank 1 – 2.5K CXP

  • Rank 2 – 15K CXP

  • Rank 3 – 50K CXP

  • Rank 4 – 100K CXP

  • Rank 5 – not currently implemented but CXP can be gained up to 150K CXP currently.

  • Ranking up gives a character title, access to more missions in that specific category, a token to purchase a new duty officer for that rank (increases in quality as rank increases) and in special cases a new ability. Diplomacy / Marauding rank 4 allows each faction to enter the home sector of the other which provides access to Duty Officer missions in those sectors. Transwarps can also be gained from

  • How can you get additional Duty Officers? character ranks / recruitment missions / CXP ranking up / trade in missions / dilithium purchases / Doff assignment rewards / STF token vendor / c-store / EC exchange / FE – Facility 4028 /

  • Where can you find Doff Assignments? Sector tab / personal tab / social zones / inside your ship

  • Basics of the Duty Officer Assignment user interface

  • The button to activate the Doff interface is located under the mini-map

  • Overview tab
+ Assignments Summary gives you details on how many mission you are currently running
+ Duty Officer Summary show how many Doffs you have and where they are currently
+ Commendation Advancement is your master view of your CXP rank progress and rewards

  • Assignments tab includes red icons to indicate why you currently cannot take certain missions. This allows you an opportunity to correct those issues and pick up the assignment e.g. you need a duty officer not currently in your roster, you need some commodities
    + Current Sector
    + Personal
    + In Progress
    + Completed
    + Assignment Log
    + Assignment Chains

  • Duty Officers tab
+ Full details of every duty officer in your roster including bonuses for putting them on active assignment
+ Filter provided to allow you to focus on the specific Doffs you want to examine
+ Option provided to dismiss a Doff and be compensated in dilithium
+ Sections: Roster / Active Space / Active Ground / Sickbay / Brig / Passengers / Cargo Bay

  • Request Duty Officers tab
+ Purchase additional roster slots from the c-store
+ Purchase Doff packs from the c-store
+ Open any cadres you have and have them added to your roster
+ See your most recently added Doffs and filter through them as needed

  • Department Heads
+ Assign a first offcer and obtain missions for that Bridge Officer
    + Departments: Engineering / Operations / Science / Medical / Tactical / Security
+ These bridge officers will make suggestions on what Doffs to assign to missions which fall under their specialisations.
+ These suggestions are NOT always the best Doffs to assign and that will be covered in more detail during the advanced guide next week on STOked 119.

  • Basics of running a Duty Officer Assignment
    • Choose an assignment from a category that interests you
    • Read the assignment description to get an idea of the “story” involved
    • Take note of the “Time To Completion”
    • Examine the “Rewards” for this assignment
    • Use the “Chance of success” percentages and graph to gauge the expected outcome of the assignment based on the Doffs you choose to assign to it. This updates as you change Doffs.
    • The “Requires” section tells you how many Doffs are needed and the specific traits and specialisations that are required. The more of the good traits you have in your assigned Doffs, the higher you chances of success and possibly critical success will be. Failed missions sometimes result in Doff injuries and disasters result in dead white quality Doffs. Blue / Green / Purple doffs only take injuries from such failures. The only exception where higher than white quality DOffs “die” are when you assign them to “Execute For Incompetence” missions.
    • Some Doffs have an innate % boost to rewards provided e.g. 5 (green) / 10 (blue) / 20 (purple)
Next Week:
  • Assignment chains and the special rewards from them
  • Pro tips from Brooklyn Knight / Z3R0B4NG / Lucas Purcell
  • Entire Duty Officer guide for these segments published in the show notes
  • DoffJOBS Spreadsheet usage
  • DoffJOBS Tracker
  • DoffJOBS in game, global chat channel
    investigation.
