As you know, 18.04 will be an LTS release and so we will be focusing on stability and reliability this cycle, as well as a few new features. There were a healthy handful of Unity 8 fans, calling for its GA, and more than a few HackerNews comments lamenting the end of Unity in this thread.

Lightworks 14 Released

Like a sequel to the Expendables, Lightworks 14.0 is packed to the rafters with cameos from features you always knew were there, but had sort of forgotten all about.

Part of the ‘old dog, new tricks‘ vibe is thanks to the top-to-toe redesign the non-linear editor is sporting. Lightworks’ new look (called “Fixed”, funnily enough) addresses the software’s most oft cited criticism: that it’s hard to use. Thew new layout aims to offer a “more organised” workspace, and help you discover, learn, and use the editor’s various features.

Light works supports Ubuntu 16.10 or later — sorry LTS users. You won’t be able to export to MP4 or MOV; you can’t import WMV; and there’s no FX plugin-support.

Russian hackers behind the damaging cyber intrusion of the State Department in recent months used that perch to penetrate sensitive parts of the White House computer system, according to U.S. officials briefed on the investigation.

While the White House has said the breach only affected an unclassified system, that description belies the seriousness of the intrusion. The hackers had access to sensitive information such as real-time non-public details of the president’s schedule. Dell’s Linux PC sequel still “just works”—but it adds 4K screen and rough edges | Ars Technica

For $1,533 out of the gate or about $2,080 as tested, is the M3800 Developer Edition worth it?

Sure—if you want a fast, well-built, well-equipped 4K laptop preloaded with Ubuntu, with most of the potential edge-case configuration issues already taken care of, with an active set of developers working to ensure that the necessary repos are kept current, and with an actual, for-real OEM warranty and support.

The Good

• Ubuntu 14.04, factory-preconfigured to just work
• Barton George and the other Dell engineers worry about packages and drivers so you don’t have to
• High-quality build: no squeaks, no rattles, no shimmies
• 16GB of RAM, the potential for a large SSD, and a Haswell i7 CPU mean it’s got plenty of guts as a developer’s workstation
• Reasonable amount of upgradeability
• Display is bright, beautiful, and works with Ubuntu 14.04 (including the multitouch functionality)

The Bad

• Thunderbolt port doesn’t really work in Ubuntu
• Application-level 4k scaling issues are pretty much all over the place
• If all you’re after is Linux on a laptop, you can do it for cheaper than the M3800’s starting price
• I kind of hoped the Dell logo on the back would light up, but sadly it doesn’t

The Ugly

• Battery life with the Nvidia GPU enabled is far too short for a day’s worth of working

elementary — Payments

We explicitly say you can download Luna for free, we include a pay-what-you-want (including $0) text entry with $10 pre-filled, and we also include an explicit “Download Luna for free” link that simply sets the text entry to $0 for you.

Next, you’re given the payment/download dialog:

The text entry matches whatever was on the first screen, but we again let you change it to anything you’d like, including $0.

Users have downloaded Luna over 2,000,000 times. Around 99.875% of those users download without paying. Of the tiny 0.125% who do, the most common payments are the default $10, followed by $1. But again, only a tiny fraction of one percent of users even decide to pay in the first place.

Furthermore, we’ve received feedback that this flow is deceiving. It doesn’t make it clear enough that there are multiple payment options and it includes a payments step even if you’ve chosen to enter $0.

A recent post on the elementary blog about how they ask for payment on download created a bit of a stir this week. One particular sentence struck a nerve (it has since been removed from the post): “We want users to understand that they’re pretty much cheating the system when they choose not to pay for software.”

AutoKey

AutoKey is a desktop automation utility for Linux and X11. It allows you to manage collection of scripts and phrases, and assign abbreviations and hotkeys to these. This allows you to execute a script or insert text on demand in whatever program you are using.

AutoKey features a subset of the capabilities of the popular Windows-based AutoHotkey, but is not intended as a full replacement. For a Linux-based implementation of AutoHotkey, see IronAHK. AutoKey’s GUI features a number of concepts and features inspired by the Windows program PhraseExpress.

• Python scripting engine allows you to automate virtually any task that can be accomplished via the keyboard and/or mouse
• Built-in code editor with autocomplete and calltips
• Scripts are plain Python files that can be edited in any text editor
• Similarly, phrases are stored as plain text files
• Create collections of phrases/scripts in folders, and assign a hotkey or abbreviation to the folder to display a popup menu
• Regular expressions can be used to filter windows by their title or class, to exclude hotkeys/abbreviations from triggering in certain applications

The Linux desktop is easily still a good 5 years behind Windows and OSX and without LTS Linux wouldn\’t even be in the ballpark.

Linux outlasts Any Distro, Experienced End-Users Should Embrace that.

Watching the events around Ubuntu unfold it\’s once again teaching us something that anyone who\’s watched Linux for a long time, has noticed, but like my self, refuses to fully accept it. Many (maybe all? In the grand scheme) die or change for the worse.

And yet many Linux users are afraid of a \”raw\” Linux experience without the protection of their distro masters. They fear total system havoc without some bearded keeper of the repo gates preventing mass chaos from entering their system during some random update.

Four months into using Arch as my daily driver, in production and play, has taught me a big lesson. Not about how l33t Arch is, or that Wiki\’s can actually not suck, but that upstream is amazing. The near real time work that is being done is inspiring and encouraging to watch and enjoy.

Some examples of cutting edge:

Maybe there is a case to be made, that if you, like me, often enjoy toying with computer instead of playing a video game, then perhaps it in Linux and all upstream code\’s best future interests to try and live outside the box a little.
