House Passes Long-Sought Email Privacy Bill

Here’s What Transport for London Learned From Tracking Your Phone On the Tube

  • Advertising? I can see how this is useful for more than just advertising. Traffic flow. Knowing about time from A to B. Mention EZPass and monitoring of badges to determine flow.

  • Signs announced trial, opt out by disabling wifi.

  • The documents also seem to suggest that if TfL switched on tracking full time it could offer real time crowding information to passengers – so we could see a CityMapper of the not-too-distant future telling us which stations to avoid.

  • That sounds simlar to how Waze and Google Maps collect real-time data on traffic congestion.

  • Collecting information is one thing. Controlling access to that information is vital. As we’ve seen so many times in the past, it is the use of that data for unintended purposes which is of most concern.

  • Rainbow tables

GitLab Postmortem of database outage of January 31

  • This came from Shawn. We covered this incident in eposide 305.

  • I want to make it clear from the start, we are not mocking GitLab. There is no joy to be taken here.

  • On January 31st 2017, we experienced a major service outage for one of our products, the online service GitLab.com. The outage was caused by an accidental removal of data from our primary database server.

  • What a horrible feeling that engineer then had. Imagine, for a moment. Production has just been wiped out… OMG.

  • Backups could not be found, nor could they be used. It was all gone.

  • I can imagine lots and lots of waiting for stuff to finish. Very stressful. Much hope, but very stressful.

  • Wow, could not access their own projects. Ouch. Almost want their own repo offline, but then accusations of not dog fooding, etc.

  • Prometheus monitorin

  • Some places take the approach of making staging the hot backup for production. Exactly the same. Move production onto staging hardware if required.

  • “I don’t remember where I saw it (probably hackernews), but someone proposed to constantly recreate staging from production’s backup. This way we would have an up-to-date staging version and frequently tested backup recovery process.”

Dirty COW was Livepatched in Ubuntu within Hours of Publication

Coincidentally, just before the vulnerability was published, we released the Canonical Livepatch Service for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. New Legislation to Tackle Pirate Kodi Box Sellers Rejected

Modified Kodi and other IPTV devices allow users to access valuable content for free. Members of Parliament and industry players say they want to clamp down on such devices, by closing loopholes in copyright law to target sellers. This week, however, their suggestions to change the law in the UK were withdrawn.

DTrace for Linux 2016

Without DTrace on Linux, I began by using what was built in to the Linux kernel, ftrace and perf_events, and from them made a toolkit of tracing tools (_perf-tools). They have been invaluable. But I couldn’t do some tasks, particularly latency histograms and stack trace counting. We needed kernel tracing to be programmatic._

New Executive Director of Bitcoin Foundation

Jon Matonis has served as an advocate for the Bitcoin currency and a source of insight for cryptocurrencies and general matters of finance and politics. Prior to assuming his position as Executive Director, Jon Matonis served on the Board of Directors for the Bitcoin Foundation. He currently is a regular contributor to Forbes and is the editor of The Monetary Future economics blog and has not only a passion for but understanding of the ins and outs of the Bitcoin currency.

Jon serves as a member of the Bitcoin Magazine Editorial Board and has contributed articles to the print magazine and website. Prior to getting heavily involved in the Bitcoin currency, Jon served as the CEO of Hushmail and Chief FX Dealer at Visa. Prior to accepting his new appointment of Executive Director of the Bitcoin Foundation, Jon was a board member holding the officer role of board secretary.

One of my primary near-term objectives for the Foundation is to
become more inclusive of the various constituencies within the global
bitcoin community.

This will involve being more responsive to and
communicative with member requests. It will also involve being more open
to internationalization.

Currently, 60% of the Foundation\’s membership
is non-US based and we need to do a better job behaving like a global
organization. To this end, we will hold the next Bitcoin conference
outside of the United States and we will sign on local Foundation
chapters in several countries where interested parties have taken the
lead on expanding the principles of Bitcoin in their region.

Flattr Adds Bitcoin Support

As you asked for it. You got it! We are happy to tell you that you can now fund your account with Bitcoins. Just pick Bitcoin on the \”Add funds\” page.

TOR ATM/Hidden Exchanges Set to Flourish

Winklevoss Twins Stirring it Up

Over the years, fund industry watchers have laughed about a lot of wild investment ideas.

So when the fund observers started laughing recently after seeing the registration papers for the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust — a new exchange-traded product that faces a lengthy vetting process from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission — the question was which laugh, first or last, will be the better one here, and who will get the final guffaw.

Regardless of your view on bitcoin as an investment, the product proposed by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss would give a new world of potential investors the ability to make that decision for themselves — exactly as an ETF is intended to do.

What makes for a good server OS? A few important things to look for:

  • A deep repository of packages, that are reasonably current.
  • Good online support/community for howto’s and guides.
  • Good security.

I was not happy with my big storage options for Linux, I want a native kernel level implementation of ZFS, but I want the cutting edge software options of Linux.

I bought a FreeNAS Mini from iXsystems that I use as my backend storage apliance. In front of that I have an Ubuntu 12.04 that has an NFS mount to the ZFS storage on the FreeNAS Mini box.

A PVR for the Internet? Find out how this open source tool can be used to download TV off the net, or just a good clean organizational tool!

What is sick beard? It\’s a server-side application that can be used to to automate downloading of TV episode releases from USENET or Torrents. Or at the very least, to organize your media collection better.

I don\’t support piracy. But lets be honest, the failing traditional media companies continue to restrict how consumers use content. They model was outdated years ago, and today just feels draconian.

So lets start by chatting about how you can use Sick Beard just for good, clean, organization fun! Then after that, I\’ll arm you with the info you need, if you want to take things further.

Guides:

Note: When you\’re first configuring Sick Beard it may be more convenient to use Sickbeard-console.exe which will allow you to monitor the console while it\’s running.

DOUBLE Note: Sick Beard does not actually download TV episodes! It has no download functionality at all, it simply watches RSS feeds and integrates with your existing download applications if possible.

What is USENET?

This morning, the online streaming market exploded as Amazon landed a nut-punch to Netflix by announcing their own streaming service. FREE for Amazon Prime members. Netflix quickly responded with an announcement of their own, revealing a partnership with CBS.

Tonight, we’re taking a closer look at each of these announcements, and seeing how they really stack up against one another. Is Amazon priming up to knock Netflix from the top dog position as King of Streaming? Or can Netflix withstand the punishment?

Show Feeds:

Show Notes:

Amazon.com launches free media streaming for Prime members

  • More than 5,000 movies & TV shows will become available
  • More than 65 million visitors log on to the company’s site each month
  • Amazon Prime also offers free 2-day shipping on most products
  • Some doubt the future of content availability, but others are optimistic since Amazon has had a long-term relationship with many studios as a DVD distributor.

CBS and Netflix announce 2-year licensing partnership for entire library

  • A few titles included: Frasier, Cheers, Medium, Flashpoint, Family Ties, Hawaii 5-0, Twin Peaks.
  • And of course, STAR TREK. All of it?
  • This service will launch in early April.
    • Reactive, premature announcement due to Amazon’s release? YES.

Cost and Tech Comparisons:

  • Amazon Prime requires annual contracts, paid in 12-month lump sum.
  • Netflix can be cancelled at any time, but costs slightly more per month.
  • Amazon can stream to Android devices, Netflix cannot.
  • Amazon already owns the infrastructure to deliver this tech, Netflix has to rent it (sometimes from Amazon!)
  • Amazon is launching with “more than 5000 titles” while Netflix had more than 12,000 titles as of TWO YEARS AGO.

Judge Orders Shutdown of TV Streaming Service
