Canonical Clarifies Ubuntu Phone State: Nothing Really Until Snap-Based Image Ready

Pat shares that the Click-based Ubuntu Phone images are indeed on the way out, there will be no new Ubuntu Phone models until there is a “Snap image”, and they don’t plan to do an OTA-15 feature release. Canonical doesn’t plan to land any new features to the current stable PPA, but they will be providing security updates for important components.

Endless introduces Linux mini desktop PCs for American market

  • For the past few years Endless Computers has been making inexpensive Linux-based computers designed for use in emerging markets. Last summer the company also started working with PC makers to load its Endless OS software on some computers.

  • Now Endless is launching its first products designed specifically for the United States.
The Endless Mission One and Mission Mini are small, low power computers that sell for $249 or less. They should both be available for pre-order starting January 16th.

KDE Neon Now Available as Docker Image

  • I’m announcing a beta of KDE neon on Docker. Docker containers are a lightweight way to create a virtual system running on top of your normal Linux install but with its own filesystem and other rules to stop it getting in the way of your OS. They are insanely popular now for server deployment but I think they work just as well for checking out desktop and other UI setups.

  • To give it a try first setup docker as you would for your distro. For Ubuntu distros that means running:

NVidia New ShieldTV

  • Nvidia’s Shield set-top streaming device got an update at this year’s CES, and it was a big one: The new hardware is 40 percent smaller than the original, with a new Android 7.0 Nougat-based operating system and a redesigned UI that groups games together and just generally organizes things a bit more logically. It also handles 4K HDR content streaming, and boasts the most sources available for such content of any set-top streaming device currently available.

Pornhub 2016 – Linux up by 3%

  • When it comes to porn, we usually ask if you’re more into ass or tits, though the increasingly more important question when it comes to porn consumption is Apple or Android? And Pornhub never misses a chance to report on the different behavior between different OS users. So looking back at 2016, we (of course) dug into the difference in traffic and tastes by operating systems. Let’s start with desktop. While Windows continues to dominate when it comes to which operating system users count on to watch Pornhub (about 80% of desktop users), Mac OS and Linux are on the rise, with Mac OS up 8% in traffic share and Linux up an impressive 14%.

  • Message: I tried this out a few times throughout this year and was happy with it until i found out it will never support ZFS. solus os has some bells and whistles as far as steam goes. except for data integrity. simple question for Ike: Do you expect me to amass 500 gig of games over a cell phone connection and trust that data wont get bit rot with any other file system than ZFS? wanna re-download 10 of them over cell connection? i didn’t think so. ike has done a great job with solus os but it falls short if it leaves out ZFS. kinda like building a car by hand and equipping it with bicycle tires. you can still drive it on some roads maybe, under some circumstances. handicapped

ive been entrusting my data to a 2 TB ZFS mirror for 2 years now and i cringe thinking about anything else.when you dont have the time or resources, you use the best.

if solus had zfs, it would be a no-brainer, especially for a game machine.

  • Message:

I have been listening to several of the shows that Jupiter Broadcasting has, and religiously tune in to LAS and Linux Unplugged every week. You guys are doing a great job!

Would studying with Linux Academy and getting my RHCA and RHCE be enough to get into a job making a decent wage? I know there is the Catch 22 of certs are worthless without experience. However, but if I am correct, RHCA and RHCE are performance based exams. Wouldn’t that be enough to get your foot in the door?

I have taken several Linux, Windows and Cisco courses back in 2005, 2006, however I know a lot has changed since then.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for everything you guys do at Jupiter Broadcasting and I want to wish you all a belated Happy New Year!

The draft that Sanchez has seen tries to fix some of the problems, but doesn’t really fix the main problems of the bill. As Sanchez points out he sees four major changes in the draft:

Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 to Be Released on September 14, Add Numerous Improvements

The biggest attractions of the OTA-13 update will be support for Android 6.0 BSP (Board Support Packages), which opens the gate to new Ubuntu Phones and Tablets, and repowerd, a new power manager that promises major battery life improvements. There should also be copy-paste support.

Google’s Project Zero lays into Symantec’s Enterprise Endpoint Security products

  • “Symantec is a popular vendor in the enterprise security market, their flagship product is Symantec Endpoint Protection. They sell various products using the same core engine in several markets, including a consumer version under the Norton brand.”
  • “Today we’re publishing details of multiple critical vulnerabilities that we discovered, including many wormable remote code execution flaws.”
  • “These vulnerabilities are as bad as it gets. They don’t require any user interaction, they affect the default configuration, and the software runs at the highest privilege levels possible. In certain cases on Windows, vulnerable code is even loaded into the kernel, resulting in remote kernel memory corruption.”
  • “As Symantec use the same core engine across their entire product line, all Symantec and Norton branded antivirus products are affected by these vulnerabilities, including:”
  • Norton Security, Norton 360, and other legacy Norton products (All Platforms)
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection (All Versions, All Platforms)
  • Symantec Email Security (All Platforms)
  • Symantec Protection Engine (All Platforms)
  • Symantec Protection for SharePoint Servers
  • And so on.
  • “Some of these products cannot be automatically updated, and administrators must take immediate action to protect their networks. Symantec has published advisories for customers, available here.”
  • “Many developers will be familiar with executable packers like UPX, they’re tools intended to reduce the size of executables by compressing them. This causes a problem for antivirus products because it changes how executables look.”
  • Packers can be designed to obfuscate the executable, and make it harder for virus scanners to match against their signature database, or heuristically detect bad code
  • “Antivirus vendors solve this problem with two solutions. First, they write dedicated unpackers to reverse the operation of the most common packers, and then use emulation to handle less common and custom packers.”
  • “The problem with both of these solutions is that they’re hugely complicated and prone to vulnerabilities; it’s extremely challenging to make code like this safe. We recommend sandboxing and a Security Development Lifecycle, but vendors will often cut corners here. Because of this, unpackers and emulators continue to be a huge source of vulnerabilities, we’ve written about examples in Comodo, ESET, Kaspersky, Fireeye and many more.”
  • “Let’s look at an example from Symantec and Norton Antivirus. This vulnerability has an unusual characteristic: Symantec runs their unpackers in the Kernel!”
  • “Reviewing Symantec’s unpacker, we noticed a trivial buffer overflow when a section’s SizeOfRawData field is greater than SizeOfImage. When this happens, Symantec will allocate SizeOfImage bytes and then memcpy all available data into the buffer.”
  • “This was enough for me to make a testcase in NASM that reliably triggered Symantec’s ASPack unpacker. Once I verified this work with a debugger, building a PE header that mismatched SizeOfImage and SizeOfRawData would reliably trigger the vulnerability.”
  • “Because Symantec uses a filter driver to intercept all system I/O, just emailing a file to a victim or sending them a link to an exploit is enough to trigger it – the victim does not need to open the file or interact with it in anyway. Because no interaction is necessary to exploit it, this is a wormable vulnerability with potentially devastating consequences to Norton and Symantec customers.”
  • “An attacker could easily compromise an entire enterprise fleet using a vulnerability like this. Network administrators should keep scenarios like this in mind when deciding to deploy Antivirus, it’s a significant tradeoff in terms of increasing attack surface.”
  • There is also a buffer overflow in the Power Point decomposer (used to check for macros etc)
  • There is another vulnerability in “Advanced Heuristic Protection” or “Bloodhound Heuristics” mode
  • “As with all software developers, antivirus vendors have to do vulnerability management. This means monitoring for new releases of third party software used, watching published vulnerability announcements, and distributing updates.”
  • “Nobody enjoys doing this, but it’s an integral part of secure software development. Symantec dropped the ball here.”
  • “A quick look at the decomposer library shipped by Symantec showed that they were using code derived from open source libraries like libmspack and unrarsrc, but hadn’t updated them in at least 7 years.”
  • “Dozens of public vulnerabilities in these libraries affected Symantec, some with public exploits. We sent Symantec some examples, and they verified they had fallen behind on releases.”
  • There is “behind” and then there is 7 years, which is pretty much “definitely didn’t bother to look at all”
  • “As well as the vulnerabilities we described in detail here, we also found a collection of other stack buffer overflows, memory corruption and more.”
  • Additional Coverage: Fortune.com
  • Additional Coverage: Ars Technica

Botnet made up to CCTV Cameras and DVRs conducts DDoS attacks

  • As we reported in TechSNAP #259 a security research found that 70 different CCTV-DVR vendors are just reselling devices from the same Chinese manufacturer, with the same firmware
  • This firmware has a number of critical security flaws that the vendor was notified about, but refused to fix
  • Original coverage from March
  • Now criminals have exploited one or more of these known vulnerabilities to turn these devices into a large botnet
  • Unlike a typical botnet made up of personal computers that are turned on and off at random, and where a user might notice sluggish performance, infected embedded devices tend to be always on, and performance issues are rarely noticed
  • A botnet of over 25,000 of these CCTV systems is being used to conduct layer7 DDoS attacks against various businesses
  • One of the victims, a Jewelry store, moved their site behind a WAF (Web Application Firewall), to protect it from the attack
  • Unlike most attackers, instead of admitting defeat and moving on, the attacker stepped up the attack, and prolonged it for multiple days
  • Most botnets lose strength the longer the attack is sustained, because infected machines are shutdown, isolated, reported, or disconnected.
  • The fact that this botnet is made up of embedded CCTV devices gives it more staying power, and it is not likely to be considered the source of the problem if abuse reports do come in.

Security of HTML5 Video Ads

  • For a long time many have railed against Flash, and accused it of being the root of all evil when it comes to Malvertising
  • “For the last several years, Adobe Flash has been an enemy of the online community. In general, the position is well deserved: there were more than 300 vulnerabilities found in Flash Player during 2015 alone, making it the most vulnerable PC software of the year.”
  • This study provides a comparison between Flash and HTM5 based advertisements
  • Flash ads tend to be smaller. HTML5 ads also on average 100kb larger, using more bandwidth, which on mobile can be a big deal
  • Flash ads may be more work to create, since they are not responsive, and a different file must be created for each different ad size
  • HTML5 ads do not require a plugin to run, but older browsers do not support them. This is becoming less of an issue the number of aged devices dwindles
  • Flash ads tend to provide better picture quality, due to sub-pixel support
  • HTML5 provides better mobile support, where Flash on mobile is rare
  • There is currently a larger community of Flash developers, but this is changing
  • HTML5 is not controlled by a single entity like Adobe
  • Flash provides better optimization
  • HTML5 provides better usability and semantic support
  • This study finds that killing off Adobe Flash will not solve the security problems, HTML5 has plenty of its own security issues
  • “Even if Flash is prohibited, malvertising can still be inserted in the first two stages of video ad delivery.”
  • “The proponents pushing for Flash to be prohibited from use in an ad creative are saying that HTML5 is the remedy that can handle security threats in the advertising industry. It stands to reason that if the ad unit itself is clean, then the user won’t have any problems. Unfortunately, this is an inaccurate statement. Malvertising attacks using video ads were already occurring in late 2015 and early 2016.”
  • A typical flash malvertising campaign, the ad calls the flash externalCall interface, and runs some malicious javascript, creating a popup, that if you user accepts, may infect their computer
  • In an HTML5 based attack, the malvertising campaign payload is not in the actual advertisement, but in the VAST/VPAID metadata, as the tracking url. This silently navigates the user to an Angler exploit kit, where they are infected with no required user interaction
  • “the second scenario shows how the ad unit itself is not the only piece of the malvertising pie”
  • “The main root of the video ad malvertising problem is, unfortunately, fundamental. VAST/VPAID standards, developed in 2012, provide extensive abilities so that ad industry players can create a rich ad experience.”
  • “Since these standards allow advertisers to receive data about the user, they allow for third-party codes to be inserted inside the ad. Once a third-party code is allowed, there is an open door for bad actors to perpetrate malicious activities, i.e. insert malicious code.”
  • “Now that we have debunked the idea that malvertising would be eliminated if the industry prohibited the use of Flash in their ads, let’s discuss solutions.”
  • Even if malicious ads could be eliminated by better screening, malactors can compromise the ad network, and inject the malicious ads there
  • In the end, maybe we need to stop allowing advertisements to have the ability to execute code
  • Does anyone remember when advertisements were just animated .gif files?

For the past five years, we had been using Google Analytics for monitoring our web traffic. Innocent enough decision, right? Then we asked ourselves, “are we contributing to the mass surveillance of the web by using a feature-rich, yet free service that tracks web visitors?” Sadly. we didn’t like the answer to that question. “Yes, by using Google Analytics, we are furthering the erosion of privacy on the web.”

What’s Happening with Thunderbird and Mozilla?

Ideas for the integration of Thunderbird with LibreOffice

Concrete ideas of further integration of LibreOffice and Thunderbird

Changes in LibreOffice:

  • Access to multiple Thunderbird address books (tdf#57873).
Changes/extensions for Thunderbird:
  • Provide a theme for Thunderbird to make look and feel more similar to LibreOffice.
  • Thunderbird currently does not provide a preview of documents (except for .txt and .html). A preview of ODF (and all other supported file types) could be possible via the integration of LibreOffice Kit into Thunderbird. This could be a joint Thunderbird & LibreOffice project for GSOC 2016.
  • Possibility to use LibreOffice Writer as email editor in Thunderbird.
  • Enable Contact Notes to supports complex formatting and pictures. Notes for a Contact in an Address Book could use LibreOffice Writer/Kit. Notes could be saved in OpenDocument format
Libreoffice Does Not Want Thunderbird

One of the reasons behind the success of the LibreOffice project is the

sharp focus on a single application, which is not going to change

anytime soon. We are already working on the Android and the Cloud

versions of LibreOffice, and this is more than enough – in term of

global effort – for a community based project. So, please avoid any

speculation based on rumors, as they might be intentionally created by

our competitors.

Open source webmail clients for browser-based email

Gmail has enjoyed phenomenal success, and regardless of which study you choose to look at for exact numbers, there’s no doubt that Gmail is towards the top of the pack when it comes to market share. For certain circles, Gmail has become synonymous with email, or at least with webmail. Many appreciate its clean interface and the simple ability to access their inbox from anywhere.

But Gmail is far from the only name in the game when it comes to web-based email clients. In fact, there are a number of open source alternatives available for those who want more freedom, and occasionally, a completely different approach to managing their email without relying on a desktop client.

Let’s take a look at just a few of the free, open source webmail clients out there available for you to choose from.

FastMail: Fast, reliable email

Looking for a fully featured collaboration and communication platform? Seeking the convenience of the cloud, without having to worry about who else might have access? Want to ensure that your data is stored only in a single legislation, with highest barriers to data disclosure? Kolab Now is that service.

Safeguard your professional and personal data with Kolab Now. Enjoy the world’s world’s best privacy legislation and terms of service that put you first. All of this with a feature set that is complete to allow you to run your entire business collaboration.

DarkMail

Silent Circle and Lavabit are developing a new way to do email with end-to-end encryption. We welcome like-minded organizations to join our alliance.

To bring the world our unique end-to-end encrypted protocol and architecture that is the ‘next-generation’ of private and secure email. As founding partners of The Dark Mail Technical Alliance, both Silent Circle and Lavabit will work to bring other members into the alliance, assist them in implementing the new protocol and jointly work to proliferate the world’s first end-to-end encrypted ‘Email 3.0’ throughout the world’s email providers. Our goal is to open source the protocol and architecture and help others implement this new technology to address privacy concerns against surveillance and back door threats of any kind.

Weekly Spotlight

Flowblade 1.2

Flowblade 1.2 is the ninth release of Flowblade.

  • Flowblade has now been ported to GTK3.

  • The process was not as straight forward as one might think but eventually everything worked out. There always seemed to be just one more little change in API that required all instances to be fixed by hand. Luckily there was a conversion script available that did most of the grunt work to get things going.

  • We did get something in return. A small but percipteble responsiveness improvement was gained probably because GTK3 provides a Cairo widget for creating custom widgets that is now used instead of the project specific Cairo widget that was used before. GTK3 also seems to render widgets a bit crispier.
  • I really hope that major API breaking version jumps for widget toolkits are avoided as much as possible. Projects with large interface and small man power can really suffer here.

  • There were some other major developments during the cycle too:

  • All rendering was moved out of process as the in-process rendering was found to not work correctly in same cases.

  • Dark theme support was improved. It is now possible to use a dark theme just by setting a preference if the GTK3 theme used has a dark variant available.
  • Small screen support has been upgraded. The application now works better on 768px height screens.

Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition No Longer Available for Sale in Europe

“Unfortunately Europe has already run through their forecasted inventory (they sold better than we expected). The US still has inventory on hand. Because there will be a next gen coming out we won’t be getting any more of this model. Thanks for the support!” wrote Dell’s Barton George on his website. He’s the same guy who announced that the XPS 13 was brought back to the shop a while back.

Mozilla: data stolen from hacked bug database was used to attack Firefox

Mozilla added that the attacker accessed 185 non-public Firefox bugs, of which 53 involved “severe vulnerabilities.” Ten of the vulnerabilities were unpatched at the time, while the remainder had been fixed in the most recent version of Firefox at the time.

Attack code exploiting Android’s critical Stagefright bugs is now public

The critical flaws, which reside in an Android media library known as libstagefright, give attackers a variety of ways to surreptitiously execute malicious code on unsuspecting owners’ devices. The vulnerabilities were privately reported in April and May and were publicly disclosed only in late July. Google has spent the past four months preparing fixes and distributing them to partners, but those efforts have faced a series of setbacks and limitations.

Single Verizon IP Address Used For Hundreds of Windows 7 Activations

A presumed pirate with an unusually large appetite for activating Windows 7 has incurred the wrath of Microsoft. In a lawsuit filed in a Washington court, Microsoft said that it logged hundreds of suspicious product activations from a single Verizon IP address and is now seeking damages. Who he, she or they are behind address 74.111.202.30 is unknown at this point, but according to Microsoft they’re responsible for some serious Windows pirating. “As part of its cyberforensic methods, Microsoft analyzes product key activation data voluntarily provided by users when they activate Microsoft software, including the IP address from which a given product key is activated,” the lawsuit reads. The company says that its forensic tools allow the company to analyze billions of activations of software and identify patterns “that make it more likely than not” that an IP address associated with activations is one through which pirated software is being activated.

DOJ officials have already interviewed high-ranking music industry executives about Apple’s business habits, but it appears the FTC has taken the lead in recent weeks.

PC gaming is expanding, Valve’s GDC 2015 announcements recap

Valve Controller Final

Valve attended GDC in full force this year and talked about a lot of stuff. Here’s everything they talked about it in one post.

More than 50 titles are highlighted, including three of PCWorld’s favorite games of 2014The Talos Principle, Transistor, _and our Game of the Year, _Wasteland 2—and a slew of other spectacular titles like Metro Redux, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Civilization: Beyond Earth, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, _and _Goat Simulator, among many others.

This drop to just over 1.0% is the lowest numbers we’ve seen for Linux’s representation on Steam in quite a number of months. However, it’s not a huge surprise.

With the Vulkan API still in flux and not finalized until later this year, Valve has been developing their own Intel GPU reference driver for Vulkan to help early adopters boot-strap their code. Valve said during their presentation today at GDC2015 that this Intel Linux driver will be open-sourced, but they haven’t provided a time-frame for doing so.

VMware alleged to have violated Linux’s open source license for years

Christoph Hellwig

Linux kernel developer Christoph Hellwig filed the suit in the district court of Hamburg, Germany with funding from the nonprofit Software Freedom Conservancy, which works to “promote, improve, develop, and defend” free and open source software. The case centers on “a combined work that VMware allegedly created by combining their own code (‘vmkernel’) with portions of Linux’s code, which was licensed only under GPLv2,” _the group said in an FAQ describing the lawsuit._

Software Freedom Conservancy

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. This is the regretful but necessary next step in both Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply properly with the terms of the GPLv2, the license of Linux and many other Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

No reboot patching comes to Linux 4.0

Living patching in Linux 4.0

At the Linux Plumbers Conference in October 2014, the two groups got together and started work on a way to _patch Linux without rebooting that combines the best of both programs. Essentially, what they ended up doing was putting both kpatch and kGraft in the 4.0 Linux kernel._

ISIS Update

imgurlArea 24-09-14 14_56_58.png

Syria Becomes the 7th Predominantly Muslim Country Bombed by 2009 Nobel Peace Laureate – The Intercept

The U.S. today began bombing targets inside Syria, in concert with its lovely and inspiring group of five allied regimes: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan.

That means that Syria becomes the 7th predominantly Muslim country bombed by 2009 Nobel Peace Laureate Barack Obama—after Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya and Iraq.

Six weeks of bombing hasn’t budged ISIS in Iraq, but it has caused ISIS recruitment to soar. That’s all predictable: the U.S. has known for years that what fuels and strengthens anti-American sentiment (and thus anti-American extremism) is exactly what they keep doing: aggression in that region. If you know that, then they know that. At this point, it’s more rational to say they do all of this not despite triggering those outcomes, but because of it. Continuously creating and strengthening enemies is a feature, not a bug. It is what justifies the ongoing greasing of the profitable and power-vesting machine of Endless War.

If there is anyone who actually believes that the point of all of this is a moral crusade to vanquish the evil-doers of ISIS (as the U.S. fights alongside its close Saudi friends), please read Professor As’ad AbuKhalil’s explanation today of how Syria is a multi-tiered proxy war.

Syrian rebels who would later join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIS, were trained in 2012 by U.S. instructors working at a secret base in Jordan, according to informed Jordanian officials.

The officials said dozens of future ISIS members were trained at the time as part of covert aid to the insurgents targeting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The officials said the training was not meant to be used for any future campaign in Iraq.

The Jordanian officials said all ISIS members who received U.S. training to fight in Syria were first vetted for any links to extremist groups like al-Qaida.

In February 2012, WND was first to report the U.S., Turkey and Jordan were running a training base for the Syrian rebels in the Jordanian town of Safawi in the country’s northern desert region.

That report has since been corroborated by numerous other media accounts.

Last March, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported Americans were training Syrian rebels in Jordan.

U.S., coalition forces hit IS oil refineries in Syria

U.S. aircraft and those from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates struck Islamic State targets in Syria Wednesday, including 12 “modular oil refineries,” the U.S. Central Command said.

The 13 airstrikes used a combination of fighter aircraft and drones, according to Central Command. The targets were in the remote eastern part of Syria near the towns of Al Mayadin, Al Hasakah, and Abu Kamal. Another strike hit an IS vehicle near Dayr az Zawr, also in eastern Syria.

CIA ramping up covert training program for moderate Syrian rebels – The Washington Post

The CIA is expanding a clandestine effort to train opposition fighters in Syria amid concern that moderate, U.S.-backed militias are rapidly losing ground in the country’s civil war, U.S. officials said.

Feds Name 12 Backers of Terrorism in Syria and Beyond – NBC News.com

Among those named Wednesday were two alleged ISIS officials: Tarkhan Tayumurazovich Batirashvili, also known as Omar al-Shishani, described by the U.S. as a Syrian-based Georgia national who has held numerous top military positions within ISIS and has led a number of attacks, and Tariq Bin-Al-Tahar Bin al Falih al-‘Awni Al-Harzi, who allegedly has worked to raise funds and recruit fighters for the Islamic terror group.

Six others were identified as acting for or on behalf of al Qaeda, its Syrian affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra, or other affiliated groups. They are: ‘Abd al-Aziz Aday Zimin al-Fadhil, a Kuwaiti; Ashraf Muhammad Yusuf ‘Uthman ‘Abd al-Salam; ‘Abd al-Malik Muhammad Yusuf ‘Uthman ‘Abd al-Salam, a Jordanian; Fatih Hasar, a resident of Turkey; Hamad Awad Dahi Sarhan al-Shammari; and Ibrahim ‘Isa Hajji Muhammad al-Bakr, who is believed to be living in tribal areas in Pakistan.

Tim Cook: Apple to Add Security Alerts for iCloud Users, Broaden Two-Factor Authentication – Mac Rumors

Apple will add security alerts for iCloud users, broaden two-factor authentication and make a more aggressive effort to alert users about protecting their accounts, Apple CEO Tim Cook told the Wall Street Journal in his first interview since the recent hacking incident involving celebrities’ iCloud accounts.

To make such leaks less likely, Mr. Cook said Apple will alert users via email and push notifications when someone tries to change an account password, restore iCloud data to a new device, or when a device logs into an account for the first time. Until now, users got an email when someone tried to change a password or log in for the first time from an unknown Apple device; there were no notifications for or restoring iCloud data.

Cook said the new notifications will begin in two weeks and will allow users to take action on potential hacking immediately, allowing them to either change the password to retake the account or alerting Apple’s security team. Cook echoed Apple’s previous press release on the hackings, stressing that the best prevention for future incidents are more human than technological.

[DARPA Develops Implants that Treat Diseases and Depression Without Medication

DARPA, on the back of the US government’s BRAIN program, has begun the development of tiny electronic implants that interface directly with your nervous system and can directly control and regulate many different diseases and chronic conditions, such as arthritis, PTSD, inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease), and depression. The program, called ElectRx (pronounced ‘electrics’), ultimately aims to replace medication with “closed-loop” neural implants, which constantly assess the state of your health, and then provide the necessary nerve stimulation to keep your various organs and biological systems functioning properly.

The ElectRx program will focus on a fairly new area of medical therapies called neuromodulation. As the name implies, neuromodulation is all about modulating your nervous system, to improve or fix an underlying problem. Notable examples of neuromodulation are cochlear implants, which restore hearing by directly modulating your brain’s auditory nerve system, and deep brain stimulation (DBS), which appears to be capable of curing/regulating various conditions (depression, Parkinson’s) by overriding erroneous neural spikes with regulated, healthy stimulation.

Facebook’s autoplay video feature is destroying cell phone bills – Sep. 3, 2014

Smartphone users could be at risk of maxing out their data plans if they don’t change this default setting in the Facebook app, which otherwise will automatically start streaming videos in the News Feed window.

The issue was flagged by consumer finance site MoneySavingExpert.com, which said it had “seen many complaints from people who have been stung with data bills after exceeding their monthly allowance and who believe it to be because of Facebook autoplaying videos.”

A Smart Nanny Cam With Facial Recognition and Air Pollution Sensors

It’s a nanny cam with upgraded intelligence: Not only can it send images to your phone via an app, it can also serve as a autonomous sentry, alerting you to strange activity in the house thanks to facial recognition and air-quality sensors.

It supplies users with a live, high-definition video feed of their house. The white-and-wood device—it almost looks like a little candle for your mantel—has a 135-degree viewing angle on the room it’s in, night vision, and two-way audio.

Likewise, for audio, Withings has programmed the device to discern between, say, a baby crying and a motorcycle engine. Whenever something is a awry, users get a push notification on their phone. If the user chooses to view the notification later, it gets saved in a timeline. (How far back the timeline goes will be based on a pay-for-space subscription model.)

These clever systems for detecting abnormalities also work with the Home’s air quality sensors. These pick up on volatile organic compounds, or harmful gases often released by cleaning products or building materials. When the Home alerts users about harmful chemicals, it also points out the likely culprit.

This allows you to isolate a problem area of the house.
