Canonical Announces Snappy Sprint Event in Germany to Shape Up Universal Snaps

Today, July 5, Canonical’s David Planella has informed Softpedia about an upcoming event that aims to gather together developers and contributors from various well-known projects to work on shaping up the universal Snaps.

Just finished the first cross distro session on Day 2 of the Snappy Sprint. Sitting in this room are representatives from Debian, Fedora, Arch Linux, openSUSE, elementary and Ubuntu. All working together to make sure that Snappy is well integrated into the various distro CI systems and provides a consistent experience everywhere.

The Snappy Sprint community team dinner. These are the people, not from Ubuntu, who’ve been invited to represent their distro or project. Around this table are AppStream, Arch Linux, Debian, elementary, Fedora, openWRT, openSUSE, KDE and (me behind the camera) MATE. And some +Ubuntu of course ☺

The extraordinary growth of LibreOffice developer’s community, with a monthly average of over 16 new hackers contributing to the code since September 2010, is the result of a global mentoring effort by some of the project founders. After five years and 1,000 new developers, though, the complexity has changed, and the project needs to invest on mentoring a new generation of coders.

Vivaldi is currently offered as a tech preview and is powered by Chromium with a number of features that reminisce Opera’s glory days, among them are the speed dial and mouse gestures. Vivaldi also adds in new features like allowing multiple tabs to be combined into one tab stack, support for note-taking within the browser, and other improvements to its Chromium base. Vivaldi was started by Jon von Tetzchner, the former CEO of Opera who hasn’t been with the firm for a few years.

In the car industry, Formula 1 provides a commercial testbed for cutting-edge technologies. A pioneering project that accelerates the adoption of new technologies and drives them down into the mainstream.

The specs:

  • Fastest multi-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage

  • 4.5in 1,280 x 720 HD sapphire crystal display

The ReactOS software includes binary and source distributions of the latest ReactOS. This includes the kernel, various subsystems and some basic applications.

Notes:

  • Installer looks straight outta NT4 / Win2k DOS days.

  • File system choices are FAT32 or ext2

  • In a future where ChromeOS and tablets are a viable platform for the majority of your computing, ReactOS could play the role of enabling legacy support for old Win32 apps. In a sense, further eliminating in shred of legitimacy the Windows platform could hold 7+ years out.

Matt’s Howto:

The bulk of the howto is going to be in the video. However, there are some things you need access to.

1) Kdenlive – use this Ubuntu PPA if you’re using Ubuntu 11.10.
In a terminal window:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kdenlive

2) When you first run Kdenlive, it’s likely going to give you some first run errors, regarding ML, cancel instead of closing the app (so the first run wizard runs again later).
If running Ubuntu 11.10 and you’ve added the PPA, you will want to add/update the following.

From Synaptic, search for libmlt++3 – if it’s showing you have anything older than version 0.7.6, update the package. Also double check that libmlt-data and libmlt4 are installed.

Now you can run kdenlive again and it will show everything is working perfectly.

3) To run your webcam successfully in Google Plus hangouts, make sure your webcam is plugged in (directly, no hubs). Open up a Google Plus hangout without joining it. Visit “check settings”. If the webcam is working, great. If it’s not, then close the browser and install WebcamStudio from the latest Deb package. It will installed either via Gdebi or from the Software Center automatically.

3a) If you want/need to run WebcamStudio, perhaps because your webcam wasn’t detected in Firefox or Chrome, start the software, follow along with the video to get the software running with your webcam.

4) Since your end goal is to record Google Plus hangouts as a video, you will need to install the screen recording software known as Kazam.
In a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kazam-team/stable-series
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kazam

5) Open the Kazam software as I showed you in the video and confirm your settings and begin recording. To stop recording once you’ve started, look to the upper right near the network settings and clock, right click on the Kazam widget and stop recording from there. Remember: Do not export to a video editor directly as the video file will not be saved normally. Choose to save it for later instead.

6) With Kazam recording and WebcamStudio using your webcam, open a browser with the Google Video chat plugin installed, browse to Google Plus, then start a hangout.

7) Once the hangout is finished, close the hangout, stop Kazam, save the file, import it into Kdenlive. Drag the video into the timeline, cut the clip as to make sure the area you wish to obscure is covered. Tip: When moving the obscure box corners, understand that it’s very sensitive and getting the cursor into position takes a steady hand. So patience is critical.

8) Save the project, export it as you see fit.

NEWS:

Matt’s Howto: WebcamStudio

For months now, I’ve received requests to do a how-to on WebcamStudio. I’ve held off on this, since the developer has stated outright that the software is about to go under some heavy changes. Still, I am the co-pilot on the project so to speak, so I thought I’d throw everyone a bone and show them how to run WebcamStudio on Ustream.

You can download WebcamStudio from this link. https://www.ws4gl.org/download/installing-on-ubuntu
This segment demonstrates how you can run multiple webcams, plus how you can even add in some transitions as well on the Wild Dog PC from System76.com during a live broadcast.

Flash troubles with Ustream? If you find that Flash is giving you the allow/deny box and you cannot click into it, try this below.

1- Visit this url
https://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html

2- Next, look for a reference to the site giving you trouble. In my case, it was static-cdn1.ustream.tv

3- Highlight the static-cdn1.ustream.tv entry with your mouse, then choose always allow.

4- Close the browser, then re-open it and visit Ustream once again, then try to broadcast again. Both your audio and video will work.

5- Now close the browser again, open up webcam studio, then visit Ustream to broadcast once again. Once there, choose the video source pull down for WebcamStudio. Audio source, should be your webcam or USB headset.
