How do two long-time Linux users react to trying Windows 10? This week we run Windows so you don’t have to. How does Windows 10 compare to the modern Linux desktop, are it’s best new features a knockoff, and what areas does Windows 10 pull ahead? It’s a review of Windows 10 like you won’t find anywhere else!

How to Tweak Windows 10 and Fix Its Minor Annoyances

Windows 10 resolves a lot of the annoyances left over from Windows 8, but it also comes with a few of its own—little as most of them may be. Here’s how to tweak a few of the OS’s new features and fix its little quirks.

How to control Windows 10 notifications in the Action Center

To add, disable, or enable notifications, begin by clicking the Action Center icon located on the right-hand side of the Windows taskbar. Then, click the All Settings _button with the gear icon and select _System _in the top-left corner of the window. Afterward, click _Notifications & Actions.

De-Mystifying the Dark Corners of Windows: The Registry, DLLs, and More Explained

If your Windows chops extend in any capacity beyond novice, you’ve no doubt encountered the ever-cryptic Windows Registry, DLL files, User Account Control, and other tools with seemingly dark and mysterious powers. Here, we’ll explain some of Windows’ most confusing features, so you know exactly what’s happening when you go to edit them

Windows 10 Keyboard Shortcuts at a Glance – Sebastian Klenk’s Blog – Site Home – TechNet Blogs

In this blog post, I’d like to share a list of Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts with you. I tested the below shortcuts in the current build of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build No. 10122 — and I couldn’t live without them

  • Win+Tab: View all virtual desktops at a glance.

  • Win+Q or Win+S: Open Cortana.

  • Win+I: Open Windows 10 Settings.

  • Win+A: Open the notification center.
  • Win+Ctrl+D: Create a new virtual desktop.
  • Win+Ctrl+F4: Close the current virtual desktop.
  • Win+Ctrl+[Left/Right]: Switch between virtual desktops.
  • Win+G: Open the Game Bar, for taking screenshots/recording video game play.

Privacy Issues:

Microsoft’s new small print – how your personal data is (ab)used

By default, when signing into Windows with a Microsoft account, Windows syncs some of your settings and data with Microsoft servers, for example “web browser history, favorites, and websites you have open” as well as “saved app, website, mobile hotspot, and Wi-Fi network names and passwords”.

Users who chose to enable Microsoft’s personal assistant software “Cortana” have to live with the following invasion to their privacy: “To enable Cortana to provide personalized experiences and relevant suggestions, Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more.” But this is not all, as this piece of software also analyses undefined “speech data”: “we collect your voice input, as well your name and nickname, your recent calendar events and the names of the people in your appointments, and information about your contacts including names and nicknames.”

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to”, for example, “protect their customers” or “enforce the terms governing the use of the services”.

According to Zach Epstein of BGR News, all of Windows 10’s features that could be considered invasions of privacy are enabled by default. Signing in with your Microsoft email account means Windows is reading your emails, contacts and calendar data. The new Edge browser serves you personalized ads. Solitaire now comes with ads. Using Cortana — the voice-driven assistant that represents Redmond’s answer to Apple’s Siri — reportedly _”plays fast and loose with your data.” _

“I am pretty surprised by the far-reaching data collection that Microsoft seems to want,” web developer Jonathan Porta wrote on his blog. “I am even more surprised by the fact that the settings all default to incredibly intrusive. I am certain that most individuals will just accept the defaults and have no idea how much information they are giving away.”

  • As examples, Porta cited Microsoft having access to contacts, calendar details, and “other associated input data” such as “typing and inking” by default. The operating system also wants access to user locations and location history, both of which could be provided not just to Microsoft, but to its “trusted partners.

“Who are the trusted partners? By whom are they trusted? I am certainly not the one doing any trusting right now,” Porta wrote, describing the default privacy options as “vague and bordering on scary.”

  • Alec Meer of the ‘Rock, Paper, Shotgun’ blog pointed out this passage in Microsoft’s 12,000-word, 45-page terms of use agreement:

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to.”

  • While most people are used to ads as the price of accessing free content, writes Meer, Microsoft is not making it clear enough that they are “gathering and storing vast amounts of data on your computing habits,” not just browser data.

  • Opting out of all these default settings requires navigating 13 different screens and a separate website, the bloggers have found.

Windows 10 Shares Your Wi-Fi With Contacts — Krebs on Security

while Wi-Fi Sense is turned on by default, users still have to explicitly choose to share a network. “When you first connect to a password-protected Wi-Fi network, you choose if you want to share access to that network with your contacts,” Bott writes. Nevertheless, many users are conditioned to click “yes” to these prompts, and shared networks will be shared to all Facebook, Outlook, and Skype contacts (users can’t pick individual contacts; the access is shared with all contacts on a social network). Updated the lead to clarify that users are prompted to share.

Noah’s Experience with Windows 10

Stuff that worked

  • Windows Installed

  • First Windows I didn’t have to fight with my HP1100

  • UI seems improved from Windows 8 – closer for enterprise use

  • Live Tiles are cute

  • Google Calendar works with app

Stuff that didn’t work

  • GIMP Photo Editing software was not available.

  • Virt Manager was not available

  • No way to use Yubikey SSH key natively, could not get it setup in PuTTy

  • Audacity hung up constantly when exporting to .Mp3

  • Couldn’t find Brasero for Windows

  • Windows uses torrents – but for updates only

Chris Experiences

  • Fails to detects Bonobo hard drive. First time any OS has ever done this.

  • Basic system customization and settings are locked out until you activate Windows 10. This limited my ability to really test some important features, thus I was forced to buy a retail copy.

  • It took quite a bit of work to get audio working, including multiple failed attempts to install a driver from Windows Update.. And then failed attempts to install a driver from Dell.

  • Only after a BIOS update did the driver from Windows Update take.

  • Many parts of the system are not High DPI. Error screens/msgs, Control Panel Applets, Installers, all over the place. Very hit and Miss.

  • Network and Sharing Center detected the JB Prod network as a “public” network, and thus applies all kinds of network restrictions for file sharing, discovery, firewall, etc. How do you fix this?

  • The new System setting screen feels like a knockoff of Plasma 5 desktop.

  • Old control panel still lurks, giving users in some cases up to three places to change a setting

  • Windows Update fails to install a Synaptics Driver update for Dell Touchpad, giving me nothing but a cryptic hex error. Super user friendly.

Samsung Finds, Fixes Bug In Linux Trim Code – Slashdot

After many complaints that Samsung SSDs corrupted data when used with Linux, Samsung found out that the bug was in the Linux kernel and submitted a patch to fix it. It turns out that kernels without the final fix can corrupt data if the system is using linux md raid with raid0 or raid10 and issues trim/discard commands (either fstrim or by the filesystem itself). The vendor of the drive did not matter and the previous blacklisting of Samsung drives for broken queued trim support can be most likely lifted after further tests. According to this post the bug has been around for a long time.

Hackers Can Disable a Sniper Rifle—Or Change Its Target

At the Black Hat hacker conference in two weeks, security researchers Runa Sandvik and Michael Auger plan to present the results of a year of work hacking a pair of $13,000 TrackingPoint self-aiming rifles. The married hacker couple have developed a set of techniques that could allow an attacker to compromise the rifle via its Wi-Fi connection and exploit vulnerabilities in its software. Their tricks can change variables in the scope’s calculations that make the rifle inexplicably miss its target, permanently disable the scope’s computer, or even prevent the gun from firing.

Kodi 15.0 – Isengard – One Release to Rule Them All

We are proud to announce the release of Kodi 15.0. No new name this time around, but many new features that cover requests both more than 5 years old and less than 5 months old. Let’s take a quick look at a few.

Kodi/XBMC was launched in 2002 as an MPlayer-based Xbox hack called Xbox Media Player. After a merger with the YAMP (Yet Another Media Player) project, it re-emerged in 2003 as the Windows-focused Xbox Media Center (XBMC). In 2007, a Linux port was begun, which appeared in final form in 2009 in D-Link’s Boxee Box media player.

The Macintosh port emerged around the same time, followed by an iOS version. Earlier this year, Kodi dropped support for the AppleTV2 due to poor performance resulting from Apple’s lack of support.
The framework has taken off in recent years with the explosion in IPTV cord-cutting services designed for laptops, media players, Smart TVs, and mobile devices. The software provides access to a huge variety of videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files, called up from the Internet or local and network storage media.

Kodi lets you watch and record live TV, and it supports integration with backends including MediaPortal, MythTV, NextPVR, Tvheadend, VDR, and its prime competitor: Windows Media Center. The software provides a consistent UI ranging from phones to 10-foot TVs, and lets you apply custom skins.

In addition to adding Android support, Kodi 15 provides a new chapter selector window, a more flexible adaptive seeking feature, more convenient audio and subtitle options, and more frequent language add-on updates. The add-on manager, meanwhile, has a revamped UI.

This entire work is not related to UI, instead it is a major reorganization of the code. By the end of this cleanup phase, end users won’t notice any difference.

HELLO

I’m not sure if this qualifies for the male sac, but here’s the story….

The gf (ClareBear) has started helping herself to my tshirts when she stays over at my place.

First time, she grabbed my techSNAP tshirt, so I made her pose (for Allan & Chris) in front of my freeNAS & router setup (running dd-wrt), before she got to wear it. See photo (ClareSNAP) – where she’s smuggling peanuts. Or maybe you’re staring at the raspberry-pi which is my media box, to stream shizzle off the freeNAS.

Then, the Second time, she grabbed my LAS tshirt, so I told her she had to pose for a titalating photo for Chris & Matt. Which she is very happy to do. See photo (ClareLAS).

Waiting for the third time she grabs a JB piece of clothing now. Thanks for the awesome podcasts.

Ps. You said on an episode of T3 that you couldn’t remember who sent you the “KICK-IT” soundbite for kickstarter of le week. That was me 😛

Sophos anti-virus detects it self

  • Earlier this week Sophos released a scheduled update to their anti-virus definition files
  • The new definitions detected the Sophos updating process, and a number of other auto-updating applications, as variants of the malware Shh/Updater-B
  • In addition to setting of a huge volume of false positives, the detection also resulted in the quarantine, blocking or deletion of parts of the Sophos updater
  • The updated definitions that solve the problem were released on Wed, 19 Sep 2012 21:32 BST
  • However, the updated definitions could not be downloaded by Sophos, because the updater had been broken
  • This is an especially large issue for enterprise deployments of Sophos
  • The Sophos support number was down, the call volume was so great that most people could not even get into the hold queue

0-day Flaw in Internet Explorer active in the wild

  • Internet Explorer versions 6 through 9 are vulnerable to a new series of attacks
  • Exploits for a previously unknown use-after-free memory corruption vulnerability, in addition to three more exploits that were found and tied to a hacker group in China known as Nitro (the same group responsible for exploits of two zero-day Java flaws disclosed three weeks ago)
  • Security researcher Eric Romang discovered the first of the exploits last weekend while monitoring an infected server
  • When a user lands on an infected page, the exploit installs the PoisonIvy remote access Trojan
  • Jaime Blasco of AlienVault Labs then discovered three additional exploits, one of which drops the PlugX trojan
  • The new exploits appear to be targeted at defense contractors in the U.S. and India
  • An unknown exploit was found in a Defense News Portal site in India, it had been served for at least four days
  • Microsoft is slated to release a patch on Friday , until then, a ‘fixit’ patch is available
  • A new metasploit module to test for and exploit the vulnerability has been released
  • Additional Coverage

The “top secret” room where 260 Internet Service Providers connect

  • Nearly every carrier neutral data center in the world contains a MeetMe room
  • MeetMe rooms more often used for private peering, rather than internet transit
  • Transit is when you buy ‘Internet’ service from another provider, they provide you with a ‘default route’ that you can send traffic to, and it will be delivered to anywhere on the internet
  • Peering is where providers swap traffic that is specifically destin to each others networks, so if Provider A peers with Provider B, Provider A must use their transit connection to reach provider C, only traffic between A and B (and their customers) are allowed across the ‘peering’ link
  • If 1 Wilshire (the building in question) were to go entirely offline, all connections in and out severed, the Internet would continue to operate, traffic would be routed around the missing nodes
  • Performance would be degraded, and it is possible that some of the ‘backup’ routes could not handle all of the traffic, but the network would not cease to work
  • The Internet is based on the principle of being able to get data from Point A to any Point B, reliably
  • To do this, the Internet’s backbone providers use BGP4 routing protocol (Border Gateway Protocol)
  • Most Internet Transit providers have maps that look like this:
  • nLayer
  • Hurricane Electric
  • Abovenet (Zayo)
  • Level3
  • NTT
  • Vocus (Australian)
  • As you can see on most all of these maps, there are almost always multiple paths that a packet can take to get from point A to point B

Chakra Project Review, IE Arch Made Easy:

Pacman vs Ports

  • Pacman is the binary package tool for Arch Linux. The FreeBSD equivalent is pkg_add
  • the Arch Build System (ABS) is designed to mimic some of the capabilities of FreeBSD’s ports system
  • Both Ports and ABS consist of a number of directories named after various packages sorted into categories (ie ABS: extra/daemons/apache Ports: www/apache22). These directories do not contain the files or source code for firefox, but rather just a few script files that provide the infrastructure to allow you to build firefox.
  • Both Ports and ABS automate the process of building software, including the following steps:
  • Download source code from mirrors
  • Checksum the file (for security and integrity)
  • Extract the files
  • Apply any required patches (FreeBSD changes the default paths for a lot of apps to follow the FreeBSD directory structure)
  • Run the configure script (FreeBSD provides a text based menu for selecting options)
  • Compile the application
  • BSD ONLY: Install the application
  • BSD ONLY: checksum all the files that were installed
  • BSD ONLY: Uninstall the application (remove any unmodified files using checksums from earlier)
  • Create a package that can be installed (with pacman or pkg_add respectively)
  • ABS is only a build system used to build packages, that are then installed and managed by pacman
  • Ports is integrated with pkg_add and the package registry, and allows you to install the build application without the additional step of building a package.

Show Notes:

Topic: 100s of GMail accounts hacked from China

  • Users were all victims of a phishing scam
  • Attackers used stolen passwords and setup forwarding and delegation to be able to spy on all current and future mail for that account, even if the password was changed
  • Google stresses “It’s important to stress that our internal systems have not been affected—these account hijackings were not the result of a security problem with Gmail itself.”
  • Targets seemed to be politically motivated, going after government officials and journalists

Topic: PBS website hacked

  • LulzSec, one of the hacker groups from the Sony attacks we discussed last night, managed to gain access to several areas of the PBS website.
  • They published the user login information they were able to siphon from the database
  • They were able to posted fake news stories and could have causes serious harm (however their story was that rapped Tupac Shakur was still alive and living in New Zealand)
  • If they had published specially crafted news stories, they could have infected the computers of visitors to the site, or have caused havoc on the stock market by falsely reporting news about various companies.
  • LulzSec says the attack was in protest about a PBS Frontline episode that was critical of WikiLeaks

Topic: I told you so

https://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/05/27/2249210/BBC-Site-Uses-Cookies-To-Inform-Visitors-of-Anti-Cookie-Law

  • In order to comply with a new UK law governing website cookies, when you visit some BBC websites such as radiotimes.com you will be presented with a message telling you about the new law. This message uses a cookie to remember that it has been displayed to you, and will not appear next time you visit the site, to avoid annoying you.
  • This means they are using a cookie, to tell you about how they are not going to use cookies without your consent.
  • In the future, without the use of something like the google/mozilla ‘do not track’ system, users who decline to accept a cookie will be prompted with such warnings every time, because there will be no way to store their acceptance of the agreement to accept cookies, without using a cookie.
  • This is why this issue should have been left to the users and the browsers manufactures, who already have the issue well in hand with security settings, private browsing modes, and the do-not-track system.
  • This law will become effectively unenforceable

Topic: Defense Contractor Lockheed Martin compromised by duplicate RSA SecureID Tokens

  • Attacks broke in to the secure networks of Lockheed Martin and other government contractors by creating duplicates of RSA SecureID Tokens
  • It is not clear what data may have been taken. It is unlikely that this information will ever be released by Lockheed Martin because it is likely highly sensitive.
  • RSA SecureID is a two-factor authentication system. It is designed to thwart key-loggers and similar attacks by combining the usual username/password combination with a dynamic token they changes every few seconds.
  • Senior defense officials claim that while contractors networks contain sensitive data, all classified data is on a separate, closed networks managed by the U.S. government
  • The pentagon also uses RSA SecureID tokens, but declined to say how many
  • Apparently the hackers learned how to duplicate the SecureID tokens using formation stolen during the Advanced Persistant Threat attacks of RSA that we discussed in episode 002 of TechSNAP
  • The RSA attack was followed by targeted malware and phishing attacks on customers who used the RSA SecureID system in an effort to collection the information necessary to duplicate the SecureID Tokens
  • This raises questions about the RSA SecureID system, can it be fixed or does the entire system need to be redesigned. It seems that it is far too easy to duplicate the SecureID tokens.

Q: (Swadhin) What are the differences between the virtualization that we do on our home pc and the virtualization  that you people do on enterprise servers
A: Mostly the virtualization used in enterprises is the same as what you can do on your home PC. One of the main differences is that in an enterprise, they will have many different servers hosting the virtualized systems, but they will all use what is called ‘shared storage’. Usually something like iSCSI. This does not mean that all of the virtual disks reside on the same physical drive, just that they are accessible in a single place. The advantage to this system is that it becomes possible to ‘migrate’ a virtual machine from one physical host to another, without rebooting the virtual machine. The disk is not moved at all, so all that happens is the memory footprint is transferred between the first host and a second host. Then the virtual machine is paused, and any changes in the memory footprint are synchronized, and the virtual machine is unpaused on the new host. This allows for individual physical host machines to be shutdown for maintenance without taking down the virtual machines hosted there. It also allows for load balancing, if a few virtual machines on the same physical host are very busy, one or more of them can be moved to other less busy hosts to maintain the highest possible performance. Another feature of this system is to allow you to maximize the efficiency of your hardware. Some physical machines can be turned off when the load level is lower, and then if the currently running machines are approaching their maximum load levels, you can turn some more physical machines on, and have the load balanced to them. Then when the load levels fall again, you can turn some physical machines back off. This reduces your power usage, and makes sure you don’t have a bunch of servers just sitting around idle wasting electricity and running up your cooling bill.

Q: (Alexander) I am building a new home network for my roommates and I at college, we plan to build a virtualization server as described on the ‘build your own cloud’ episode of LAS. I have a few questions:

  1. Should I buy a managed or an unmanaged switch

A: Likely you do not need a managed switch. Managed switches provide features like ‘VLANs’, a way to basically break the switch up in to logical groups of ports, and simulate having multiple separate switches (that can even span between physical switches). This functionality is good for keeping different parts of the network separate (like having a DMZ to put your servers in, and then separate internal LANs), but is likely unnecessary in your setup. You can save your self 100s of dollars by just getting an unmanaged switch.

  1. Should I build a virtualization server and a storage server or one that functions as both?

A: The advantage to having the storage server setup, if you use something like iSCSI for the storage system, is the ability to move the virtual machines between physical hosts. This is really only helpful if you have more than 1 virtualization server, so again, you can probably save money by building only a single server.

  1. How much power would you think a system like this would draw?

A: That depends, you would be able to see that in the specs for the server when you go to buy it, but overall not that much. Hard drives draw fairly little power, and a quad core processor is usually between 94 and 135 watts, unless you get a lower power version. Servers also tend to have higher efficiency power supplies, at least 80% efficient, so less of the power draw is exhausted as waste heat.

  1. How would I run multiple web servers in my network and have them all accessible to the outside world with only one external IP address?

A: If you only have a single external IP, your options are fairly limited. Either you run each web server on a different port, which is cumbersome to the users, or you use a reverse proxy to do virtual hosting. All web servers are capable of doing Virtual Hosting, that is, serving a different page based on the ‘Host’ header that the user’s browser sends when they visit a website. The idea here would be to setup something like NGINX or LigHTTPd to listen on your single ip, and then route the connection to the right internal web server based on the hostname or path that is being requested. This solution also works for routing different parts of a website to different internal servers while maintaining a single ‘domain’, which can be important for cookies, javascript and flash ‘same domain’ policies.
Reverse Proxy: https://nginx.org/

User submitted War Story:
(StayFrosty) I was building a new Windows 2008R2 server for a small business client of mine. The machine was little more than a glorified desktop, but it had a support contract. After installing the OS I started installing the drivers, and noticed that there was a BIOS update. I figured since the machine was not in production yet, I might as well install that too. During the flashing process, one of the steps failed. I flipped the KVM over to use a different machine to research the problem, while doing so, I heard the fans in the server spin down and then back up. The machine had rebooted automatically to install some windows updates. When I flipped the KVM back, nothing but a black screen. Luckily, when I contacted the hardware provider, they told me about the BIOS recovery jumper and I was able to get the machine back online.

micdodgeOver the years I’ve written several microphone reviews in my ongoing search for the one microphone that combines quality of sound, great features, and does not require very expensive equipment to operate. Those requirements make USB microphones very attractive, they plug right into the computer and show up as a digital sound device, they are powered from the USB bus of the computer.

In the last Microphone review I did in early 2009, the microphone I heard to most feedback on was the Blue Snowball, and rightly so. The Blue Snowball is a classy looking microphone with some great features. USB means you can simply plug it in and start podcasting right away (with some issues under Linux).

With the many advantages to USB and the obvious popularity, I set off to research and try out the absolute best USB podcasting Microphone. If you’d like to see my take on a few fantastic non-USB mics, check out my review on those.

I’ll be comparing what might just be two of the best selling USB Microphones, Blue’s Snowball and the Rode Podcaster.

Watch my In Depth Look video for even more details:

The Blue Snowball:

bluesnowballback_lStarting with the Blue Snowball, it has a few features I love, with it’s exaggerated 1920’s classic look. Some of the great features include:

  • Three operational modes, standard audio level, -10db pad, and a room mode. The room mode is great for using a single mic for a couple people… Though I find the quality takes a noticeable hit (see video for more). Over all I tend to really only find my self using the first main mode, unless I’ve setup a co-host with the Snowball, and he or she needs a little help keeping those levels in check.
  • The Blue Snowball is probably one of the most prolific mics on the market, so support is wide spread. This has not led to very solid Linux support, but it is usable out of the box on Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Overall I find the Blue Snowball to have a very true sound, if not a bit t00 thin that can’t really be fully restored in post without a lot of extra work. I find the stand the Blue Snowball comes with nearly useless, it’s too short and built cheap, however the hole the stand mounts into is a standard mic pole socket, so you can easily mount the Snowball to any standard mic mount.

The new contestant for my label of “best podcasting microphone” is the Rode Podcaster. It has a more serious look and design, I can tell that Rode was aiming for a pro look and feel, and I think they nailed it. It’s a hefty microphone, nearly 2lbs in weight, with a metal body and it has a really good solid feeling in your hand – though that extra heft can be felt in your laptop bag if you’re traveling and want to record on location.

The Rode Podcaster:

rodepodcasterThe Rode Podcaster has a few really great features that I feel put this microphone in a category of its own for the consumer market, such as:

  • The number one feature is the built in microphone jack. This means you can monitor your audio live, without the delay from USB. Something not possible with nearly all USB microphones and is such a critical way to avoid regretting a horrible recording session that could have been avoided with simply monitoring what was going into your recorder. The headphone jack being built into the mic means no delay, which is critical so your not finding your self getting tripped up by hearing your self on a strange delay. It does odd things to the brain.
  • Not content with just acting as headphone jack to monitor your self, the headphone jack also shows up as a USB audio output device on your computer. This means when your doing a Skype call, you can set Skype to send audio to that jack, so you don’t end up picking up the bleed from your desktop speakers on your mic. Direct monitoring and Audio out ability can really improve the quality of your recordings.
  • Overall I think the Rode has a great sound, it can be a bit quiet, so be sure you have your levels set right. But it’s always safe to error on the side of quite audio, you can boost that.. You can’t fix your recording if you clip out the entire time and blast the recorder with too much level.
  • Last but far from least, the Rode Podcaster is a top fire-end mic, with a very narrow pickup range. What the heck does that mean? It means you talk into the top of it, not the side of it quite simply. The advantage is it’s not awkward to use if you put it on a mic stand or boom. As for the narrow pickup range (this is better demonstrated in the video) stuff that is not directly in front of the mic, is hardly picked up. This is key if you are recording in a noisy room with PC fans, other background sounds, or have other hosts around you. One of the often missed causes of a bad sounding recording is when your hosts are picked up by the other hosts mics. Because they are not directly in front of the mic next to them that is picking them up, their voice has a poor sound quality, it gets mixed into the overall recording, and BOOM, you have some element in your recording killing your quality that is kind of hard to track down and figure out.

RodePodcaster-onmount1The Rode Podcaster does not come with a stand, so you’ll need something to mount it on. You can go with something simple and cheap, like a desk stand that sits right on your desk or a mic boom that clamps to your desk and lets you adjust the mic around to better fit how you are sitting. The desk stand also tends to transfer any noise on your desk into the mic, the mic boom can do this as well, but when you combine the boom stand with a shock mount, you can almost totally eliminate this issue.

To really get setup right, I’d recommend a boom and shock mount. I contacted the folks over at The DVeStore.com (whom I got my Rode Podcaster from) and told them I was doing this review. They put together a full Rode Podcaster bundle that includes the Mic, boom stand, and shock mount for a great price. I don’t make anything off their sales (unlike the Amazon links above), I just know them and been happy with the service.

The One:

Over all I am giving the crown for the “Best Podcasting Microphone” to the Rode Podcaster, it’s built in headphone monitor, support for Windows, Linux, and Windows (Linux & Vista/Win7 after a firmware update) really make this a fantastic mic. When you factor in it’s high-end sound quality, exceptional build quality, and Rode’s reputation for making great mics – it’s a clear winner!
