Without a doubt, we hit that famous Seattle traffic once we got back into town, can’t say we missed that.

And Chris and Hadea share what life’s been like since getting back.

U.S. Senate bill proposes sweeping curbs on NSA surveillance – Yahoo News

Senator Patrick Leahy introduced legislation on Tuesday to ban the U.S. government’s bulk collection of Americans’ telephone records and Internet data and narrow how much information it can seek in any particular search.

The bill, which has White House backing, goes further than a version passed in May by the U.S. House of Representatives in reducing bulk collection and immediately drew warmer response from privacy advocates and technology companies.

Judiciary Committee Chair Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduces a bill that would end the NSA’s bulk data collection and storage of metadata, require court orders to search private phone company databases and put limitations on broad searches by the NSA.

Tech Companies Reel as NSA’s Spying Tarnishes Reputations – Bloomberg

Citing concerns from top executives of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) and other companies, the report made a case that NSA spying could damage the $150 billion industry for cloud computing services. Those services are expanding rapidly as businesses move software and data to remote servers.

“The immediate pain point is lost sales and business challenges,” said Chris Hopfensperger, policy director for BSA/The Software Alliance, a Washington-based trade association that represents companies including Apple Inc. and Oracle Corp.

U.S. technology companies may lose as much as $35 billion in the next three years from foreign customers choosing not to buy their products over concern they cooperate with spy programs, according to an earlier study by the Washington-based Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.

Lawfare › Senator Leahy’s NSA Reform Bill: A Quick and Dirty Summary

But the administration also makes significant gains here. Most importantly, it codifies an authority that is now highly contested, and it pushes back a scheduled sunset of that authority that is approaching rather quickly.

In short, the trade throughout this bill seems to be institutionalization of governmental authority in exchange for regulation the government will regard as burdensome and a great deal of transparency. Whether this works ultimately in favor of the government or the civil libertarians probably depends on whether industry ends up maintaining call records—in which case the institutionalization of governmental access to them will probably prove more important than the added hurdles attached to that access. If, on the other hand, industry stops maintaining these records, government will have won the authority to access records that no longer exist.

Former NSA chief to profit from patented hacker detection tech, charging clients $1M a month – Boing Boing

  • Keith Alexander, the former director of the National Security Administration, is filing for tech security patents related to his work running the NSA.

  • He’s hawking a hacker/intrusion-detection service to banks and big corporations for a reported fee of one million dollars a month.

Shane Harris for Foreign Policy, on what could possibly justify that $1 million/month fee:

The answer, Alexander said in an interview Monday, is a new technology, based on a patented and “unique” approach to detecting malicious hackers and cyber-intruders that the retired Army general said he has invented, along with his business partners at IronNet Cybersecurity Inc., the company he co-founded after leaving the government and retiring from military service in March. But the technology is also directly informed by the years of experience Alexander has had tracking hackers, and the insights he gained from classified operations as the director of the NSA, which give him a rare competitive advantage over the many firms competing for a share of the cybersecurity market.

The fact that Alexander is building what he believes is a new kind of technology for countering hackers hasn’t been previously reported. And it helps to explain why he feels confident in charging banks, trade associations, and large corporations millions of dollars a year to keep their networks safe. Alexander said he’ll file at least nine patents, and possibly more, for a system to detect so-called advanced persistent threats.

— The 47-Year-War —

Six-Day War

The Six-Day War was fought between June 5 and 10, 1967, by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt (known at the time as the United Arab Republic), Jordan, and Syria. The war began on June 5 with Israel launching surprise strikes against Egyptian air-fields after the mobilisation of Egyptian forces on the Israeli border.

A period of high tension had preceded the war. In response to PLO sabotage acts against Israeli targets,[16][17][18] Israel raided into the Jordanian-controlled West Bank[19][20] and initiated flights over Syria, which ended with aerial clashes over Syrian territory.[21] Syrian artillery attacks against Israeli civilian settlements in the vicinity of the border followed by Israeli responses against Syrian positions in the Golan Heights and encroachments of increasing intensity and frequency into the demilitarized zones along the Syrian border,[22] and culminating in Egypt blocking the Straits of Tiran,[23] deploying its troops near Israel’s border, and ordering the evacuation of the U.N. buffer force from the Sinai Peninsula.[24][25] Within six days, Israel had won a decisive land war. Israeli forces had taken control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria.

By June 10, Israel had completed its final offensive in the Golan Heights, and a ceasefire was signed the day after. Israel had seized the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank of the Jordan River (including East Jerusalem), and the Golan Heights. Overall, Israel’s territory grew by a factor of three, including about one million Arabs placed under Israel’s direct control in the newly captured territories. Israel’s strategic depth grew to at least 300 kilometers in the south, 60 kilometers in the east, and 20 kilometers of extremely rugged terrain in the north, a security asset that would prove useful in the Yom Kippur War six years later.

Gaza Strip

Gaza has an annual population growth rate of 2.91% (2014 est.), the 13th highest in the world, and is overcrowded.

There is a limited capability to construct new homes and facilities for this growth. The territory is 25 miles long, and from 3.7 to 7.5 miles wide.

With a total area of 141 sq miles.

As of 2014, Palestinians of the Gaza Strip numbered around 1.82 million people. The large Palestinian refugee population makes it among the most densely populated parts of the world

Following the victory of Hamas in the 2006 Palestinian legislative election, Hamas and Fatah formed the Palestinian authority national unity government headed by Ismail Haniya. Shortly after, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in the course of the Battle of Gaza,[43] seizing government institutions and replacing Fatah and other government officials with its own.[44] By 14 June, Hamas fully controlled the Gaza Strip. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas responded by declaring a state of emergency, dissolving the unity government and forming a new government without Hamas participation

Israeli Shells Said to Hit School in Gaza, Killing at Least 20 – NYTimes.com

The strikes came in rapid succession. At around 5 a.m. Wednesday at a United Nations school at the Jabaliya refugee camp, where 3,300 Palestinians had taken refuge from the fierce fighting in their Gaza neighborhoods, what appeared to be four Israeli artillery shells hit the compound.

Carnage at U.N. school as Israel pounds Gaza Strip

Israeli shelling killed at least 15 Palestinians sheltering in a U.N.-run school and another 17 near a street market on Wednesday, Gaza’s Health Ministry said, with no ceasefire in sight after more than three weeks of fighting.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 1,323 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since Israel began its offensive on July 8 with the declared aim of halting cross-border rocket fire. Ninety-six Palestinians were killed on Wednesday alone.

On the Israeli side, 56 soldiers and three civilians have been killed. Public support remains strong for continuing the military operation

List of countries by Global Militarization Index

The Global Militarization Index (GMI) depicts the relative weight and importance of the military apparatus of one state in relation to its society as a whole. For this, the GMI home a number of indicators to represent the degree of militarization of a country:[1]

  • comparison of military expenditure with its gross domestic product (GDP);
  • comparison of military expenditure with its health expenditure;
  • contrast between the total number of (para)military forces with the number of physicians, and the overall population;
  • ratio of the number of heavy weapons available and the overall population.

U.S. Releases Satellite Images To Back Up Claims Russia Fired Rockets Into Ukraine

Stepping up pressure on Moscow, the U.S. on Sunday released satellite images it says show that rockets have been fired from Russia into neighboring eastern Ukraine and that heavy artillery for separatists has crossed the border.

The images, which came from the U.S. Director of National Intelligence and could not be independently verified by The Associated Press, show blast marks where rockets were launched and craters where they landed. Officials said the images show heavy weapons fired between July 21 and July 26 — after the July 17 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

U.S. Says Russia Tested Cruise Missile, Violating Treaty – NYTimes.com

Russia first began testing the cruise missiles as early as 2008, according to American officials, and the Obama administration concluded by the end of 2011 that they were a compliance concern. In May 2013, Rose Gottemoeller, the State Department’s senior arms control official, first raised the possibility of a violation with Russian officials.

At the heart of the issue is the 1987 treaty that bans American and Russian ground-launched ballistic or cruise missiles capable of flying 300 to 3,400 miles. That accord, which was signed by President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the Soviet leader, helped seal the end of the Cold War and has been regarded as a cornerstone of American-Russian arms control efforts.

Blacklisted: The Secret Government Rulebook For Labeling You a TerroristThe Intercept

Blacklisted

The Obama administration has quietly approved a substantial expansion of the terrorist watchlist system, authorizing a secret process that requires neither “concrete facts” nor “irrefutable evidence” to designate an American or foreigner as a terrorist, according to a key government document obtained by The Intercept.

imgurlArea 25-07-14 12_57_46.png

“Instead of a watchlist limited to actual, known terrorists, the government has built a vast system based on the unproven and flawed premise that it can predict if a person will commit a terrorist act in the future,” says Hina Shamsi, the head of the ACLU’s National Security Project. “On that dangerous theory, the government is secretly blacklisting people as suspected terrorists and giving them the impossible task of proving themselves innocent of a threat they haven’t carried out.” Shamsi, who reviewed the document, added, “These criteria should never have been kept secret.”

MH17 disaster: few hard facts so far

As mourning continues for the 298 people killed in the Malaysia Airlines crash in Ukraine, few hard facts about the disaster’s causes are available. DW reviews the past week’s mix of sketchy details and speculation.

Recently published photographs show a piece of fuselage from the Malaysia Airlines plane peppered with “a fairly dense but also widespread shrapnel pattern” typical for a blast from an SA-11 surface-to-air missile, said defense analyst Justin Bronk, a military science analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London.
“The shrapnel damage on the airframe parts that’s been seen so far is consistent with what you would expect to see from an SA-11 warhead exploding in close proximity,” Bronk told AFP. “But to get a conclusive answer, you would have to take the aircraft away and completely reconstruct it as best as you could.”

The boxes – which are actually orange – were handed over by the OVV to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) in Farnborough, UK, for examination. **On Wednesday, AAIB experts downloaded “valid data” from the first black box, the cockpit voice recorder, which is expected to give them hours of the pilots’ conversations. **Investigators have now started examining the second black box, the flight data recorder.

Satellites Track Malaysian Airlines MH17 Crash Site from Space (Images)

MH17 Sat Tracking

The images show a charred wheat field close to the village of Grabovo where the bulk of the plane went down. But the wreckage of the crash, which killed all 298 people on board, was strewn across about 13 square miles (33 square kilometers) of farmland. The Earth-observing satellites could not capture the images until Sunday (July 20) since smoke from the wreckage and cloud cover initially blocked the view.

The bird’s-eye view of the site was imaged by DigitalGlobe, a company based in Colorado that programmed three of its five satellites to track the area after reports of the plane crash came flooding in. [See the top images from the DigitalGlobe contest in 2013]

What you need to know about the surface-to-air missile system known as the
SA-11 or Buk, which is believed to have shot down the MH17 flight.

The Internet Archives website shows that a post appeared on Strelkov’s social media profile bragging about shooting down a transport plane close to the MH 17 crash site. In a subsequent post, Strelkov said the information passed along came not from him directly, but from militia members on the scene. He said the information was unofficial and incorrect.

Southstream Pipeline

Route

South Stream’s offshore section with the total length of 930 kilometers will run under the Black Sea through the exclusive economic zones of Russia, Bulgaria and Turkey. The maximum depth will be more than two kilometers and the design capacity will amount to 63 billion cubic meters.

The onshore section will cross Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia. The gas pipeline will end at the Tarvisio gas metering station in Italy. Gas branches from the main pipeline route will be built to Croatia and to Republika Srpska (the state formation within Bosnia and Herzegovina).

In order to feed the required amount of gas into the South Stream gas pipeline, Russia’s gas transmission system will be expanded by means of constructing the additional 2,506.2 kilometers of linepipe and 10 compressor stations with the total capacity of 1,516 MW. This project has been named Southern Corridor and will be implemented in two phases before 2018.

Russia sues EU over its ‘Third Energy Package’

South Stream Pipe

Russia has sued the EU to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the EU’s so-called “Third Energy Package”, a source said to RIA Novosti. The Third Energy Package stipulates that pipe lines on the territory of the EU can’t belong to that companies that extract the natural gas. These companies should either sell their shares in the EU or pass the management of the pipe lines to independent companies.

The Netherlands was a mailbox paradise for Russia

The Netherlands is a true paradise for mailboxes Russia at the Amsterdam Zuidas are many Russian billions parked. Not only for tax reasons, but also the legal climate in the Netherlands protects – often obscure – Russian companies against the wrath of Putin.

It is perhaps not obvious, but the Netherlands is the second largest investor in Russia. Netherlands in 2012 accounted for over 12 percent of all investments and 15.9 percent of all investments from Russia. Only the smaller Cyprus scored higher. In third place graced the smaller British Virgin Islands.

Lukoil, the second largest Russian company, for example, has been sitting 59 subsidiaries in the Netherlands. A Dutch holding company owns all of its European operations. End of 2013 the company had 15.9 billion in assets.

Sanctions Victim Novatek, Russia’s second largest gas producer, has 800 million euros in a Dutch company called Arctic Russia BV sit. And that’s not all.

Perhaps the most notable name on the U.S. sanctions list was Genaddy Timchenko, founder of one of the world’s largest commodity traders Gunvor.

Since 2010 the company has, in contradiction with the law, all financial statements filed no more. In that year, the company had $ 59 billion in revenues and paraded there are 7 billion of assets on its balance sheet.
In short, Russia, the Netherlands is a true paradise mailboxes.

Pushing Ukraine to the Brink » CounterPunch

counterpunch.org

BY MIKE WHITNEY on July 9th 2014

In Ukraine, the US is using a divide and conquer strategy to pit the EU against trading partner Moscow. The State Department and CIA helped to topple Ukraine’s elected President Viktor Yanukovych and install a US stooge in Kiev who was ordered to cut off the flow of Russian gas to the EU and lure Putin into a protracted guerilla war in Ukraine. The bigwigs in Washington figured that, with some provocation, Putin would react the same way he did when Georgia invaded South Ossetia in 2006. But, so far, Putin has resisted the temptation.

But here’s the odd part: Washington doesn’t have a back-up plan. It’s obvious by the way Poroshenko keeps doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. That demonstrates that there’s no Plan B. Either Poroshenko lures Putin across the border and into the conflict, or the neocon plan falls apart, which it will if they can’t demonize Putin as a “dangerous aggressor” who can’t be trusted as a business partner.

So all Putin has to do is sit-tight and he wins, mainly because the EU needs Moscow’s gas. If energy supplies are terminated or drastically reduced, prices will rise, the EU will slide back into recession, and Washington will take the blame. So Washington has a very small window to draw Putin into the fray, which is why we should expect another false flag incident on a much larger scale than the fire in Odessa. Washington is going to have to do something really big and make it look like it was Moscow’s doing. Otherwise, their pivot plan is going to hit a brick wall.**

“Ukraine’s Parliament adopted .. a bill under which up to 49% of the country’s gas pipeline network could be sold to foreign investors. This could pave the way for US or EU companies, which have eyed Ukrainian gas transportation system over the last months.

US corporations will be able to buy up nearly half of a pipeline that moves 60 percent of the gas that flows from Russia to Europe. That’s what you call a tollbooth, my friend; and US companies will be in just the right spot to gouge Moscow for every drop of natural gas that transits those pipelines. And gouge they will too, you can bet on it.

This also explains why the Obama crowd is trying to torpedo Russia’s other big pipeline project called Southstream. Southstream is a good deal for Europe and Russia. On the one hand, it would greatly enhance the EU’s energy security, and on the other, it will provide needed revenues for Russia so they can continue to modernize, upgrade their dilapidated infrastructure, and improve standards of living. But “the proposed pipeline (which) would snake about 2,400 kilometers, or roughly 1,500 miles, from southern Russia via the Black Sea to Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and ultimately Austria. (and) could handle about 60 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year, enough to allow Russian exports to Europe to largely bypass Ukraine” (New York Times) The proposed pipeline further undermines Washington’s pivot strategy, so Obama, the State Department and powerful US senators (Ron Johnson, John McCain, and Chris Murphy) are doing everything in their power to torpedo the project.

“What gives Vladimir Putin his power and control is his oil and gas reserves and West and Eastern Europe’s dependence on them,” Senator Johnson said in an interview. “We need to break up his stranglehold on energy supplies. We need to bust up that monopoly.” (New York Times)

  • Russia only provides 30 percent of the gas the EU uses every year.

[The US] believe that if they sabotage South stream and nail down 49 percent ownership of Ukraine’s pipeline infrastructure, then the vast majority of Russian gas will have to flow through Ukrainian pipelines. They think that this will give them greater control over Moscow.

Europe and Russia are a perfect fit. Europe needs gas to heat its homes and run its machinery. Russia has gas to sell and needs the money to strengthen its economy. It’s a win-win situation. What Europe and Russia don’t need is the United States. In fact, the US is the problem.

As many commentators have noted, Russia provides upwards of one
third of Europe’s gas imports, with 60-80 percent of that supply
traveling through pipelines on the territory of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Su-25 fighter detected in close approach to MH17 before crash

The Russian military detected a Ukrainian SU-25 fighter jet gaining height towards the MH17 Boeing on the day of the catastrophe.

“A Ukraine Air Force military jet was detected gaining
height, it’s distance from the Malaysian Boeing was 3 to
5km,”
said the head of the Main Operations Directorate of
the HQ of Russia’s military forces, Lieutenant-General Andrey
Kartopolov speaking at a media conference in Moscow on Monday.

“[We] would like to get an explanation as to why the military
jet was flying along a civil aviation corridor at almost the same
time and at the same level as a passenger plane,”
he stated.

2 Ukrainian fighters seen following Malaysian jet minutes before crash

According to the Spanish air traffic controller, two Ukrainian fighters had been seen near the Malaysian jet three minutes before it disappeared from radars.

This information is confirmed by eyewitnesses in the Donetsk region who saw Ukrainian warplanes near the passenger jet. They say they heard sounds of powerful blasts and saw a Ukraine warplane shortly before the crash.

Air Traffic Control: Radar interference by NATO maneuvers – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Twice disappeared in June several machines from the radar of air traffic control in Germany and neighboring countries. Now came out: Military maneuvers of NATO were apparently the cause.

So far puzzled experts about the quite dangerous disruption in air traffic control. So lost ground controllers of air traffic on 5 June from 13.55 bis 16 clock five on 10 June from 13.22 bis 14.40 clock, the so-called secondary signal from a total of 54 transport planes in southern Germany.

The air traffic controllers on the ground immediately hit the alarm about the disorder. Immediately the number of aircraft, As a security, the density of air traffic, so in the airspace, reduced to prevent possible collisions. Due to the security measure created with the airlines delays of around 40 hours.

Sara Firth, who has worked for the state-backed TV network since 2009, said station management suggested Ukraine was at fault for the deadly Thursday crash. ‘I didn’t want to watch a story like that, where people have lost loved ones and we’re handling it like that,’ she said

Air India flight was 90 seconds away when missile struck Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17

An Air India Dreamliner flight going from Delhi to Birmingham was in fact less than 25km away from the Malaysian aircraft, a distance covered by a Dreamliner or Boeing 777 in about 90 seconds, when the latter was hit. Because of this closeness, the Dnipropetrovsk (local Ukrainian) air traffic controller asked the AI pilots to try and establish contact with pilots of the Malaysian aircraft who had stopped responding to its calls.

Minutes before the crash caused by a missile strike, the AI pilots had also heard the controller give the Malaysian aircraft MH17 what is called “a direct routing”. This permits an aircraft to fly straight, instead of tracking the regular route which is generally a zig-zag track that goes from one ground-based navigation aid or way point to another. “Direct routing saves fuel and time and is preferred by pilots. In this case, it proved fatal,” said an airline source.

“The AI Dreamliner was less than 25km away from the Malaysian aircraft when the latter was hit by a missile. When the pilots learnt the cause of the crash later, they were stunned. It’s like the person standing next to you has been hit by a sniper bullet,” said the source.

Soon after the tragedy, the media picked up data from flightradar24, a live flight tracker website which showed the AI aircraft in the vicinity. But the next day, on Friday, the civil aviation ministry issued a statement that “there was no Air India flight near the ill-fated Malaysian plane at the time of the incident”.

Kirkland resident Robby Wayne Meiser, 46, is charged with the Jan. 1 explosion and fire at the Inglenook Apartments on the Kirkland and Kenmore boundary.

“Manufacturing hash oil is illegal and poses a significant risk to families, neighbors and the general public,” U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan said. “An explosion and fire caused by hash oil production at a Bellevue apartment complex caused significant injuries to people trying to escape the flames. We will not stand by and allow this dangerous conduct to endanger the public.”

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, endangering human life while manufacturing controlled substances is punishable by up to 10 years in prison; maintaining drug-involved premises can bring up to 20 years; and manufacturing hash oil can result in up to five years.

Dog nearly dies after eating apple marijuana pipe

Apple Pipe

Misty is a 6-month old lab whose favorite treat just so happens to be a bite of apple here and there. So it was no surprise to see her grab a free one sitting along the beach at the Edmonds dog park.

“I look over and she’s got an apple in her mouth and she’s happily chewing away on it,” said Misty’s owner, Chaya Anderson.

CIA vs Senate | Unfilter 89

uf-0089

After five years the Senate’s investigation into the Central Intelligence Agencies torture programs has bursted into the light when a massive fight between top Senate officials and the CIA went public in a big way.

Taking to the floor, traditionally an intelligence agency apologist, blasted the CIA we’ll break it all down.

Obama adm refuses to pursue criminal investigation of CIA spying on Senate staffers

On Thursday this week, a DOJ spokesperson confirmed to McClatchy
that the Justice Dept. won’t pursue any further its investigation
into whether Senate Intelligence Committee staffers took
classified documents from a secure facility, nor a related probe
concerning allegations that the CIA spied on those same
congressional workers.

“The department carefully reviewed the matters referred to us
and did not find sufficient evidence to warrant a criminal
investigation,”
spokesman Peter Carr said in a statement
sent to the news agency.

Earlier this year in March, the CIA alleged that Senate staffers
working on a controversial, yet-to-be-published report concerning
the agency’s use of torture tactics after the September 11, 2001
terrorist attacks had improperly removed classified documents
from a protected site and brought them illegally to their Capitol
Hill offices. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California), the chair of
the Senate Intelligence Committee working on that report, in turn
fired back and said that the CIA has been secretly monitoring the
computer use of lawmakers and staff members involved.

During an unannounced speech on the floor of Congress that month,
Feinstein said she had “grave concerns that the CIA’s search
may well have violated the separation of powers principles
embodied in the US Constitution.”

There is_”no legitimate reason to allege to the Justice
Department that Senate staff may have committed a
crime,”Feinstein said, adding that she viewed the CIA’s
request for an investigation as a
“potential effort to
intimidate this staff.”_

GCHQ’s “Chinese menu” of tools spreads disinformation across Internet

GCHQ Wiki Page of Menu of Tricks

What appears to be an internal Wiki page detailing the cyber-weaponry used by the British spy agency GCHQ was published today by Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept. The page, taken from the documents obtained by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, lists dozens of tools used by GCHQ to target individuals and their computing devices, spread disinformation posing as others, and “shape” opinion and information available online.

The page had been maintained by GCHQ’s Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group (JTRIG) Covert Internet Technical Development team, but it fell out of use by the time Snowden copied it. Greenwald and NBC previously reported on JTRIG’s “dirty tricks” tactics for psychological operations and information warfare, and the new documents provide a hint at how those tactics were executed.

The effects tools fall into a few broad categories, including:

Denial of service and access:

  • JTRIG CITD has developed its own equivalent of CryptoLocker—Swamp Donkey, a tool “that will silently locate all predefined types of file [sic] and encrypt them on a target’s machine.”
  • Sunblock blocks a target from sending or receiving e-mail and viewing websites.
  • Stealth Moose will “disrupt [the] target’s Windows machine.” And for the ultimate in harassment, there’s ANGRY PIRATE, “a tool that will permanently disable a target’s account on their computer.”

**Information harassment tools: **

  • A tool appropriately called Badger allows GCHQ to overwhelm targets with spam e-mails “to support an Information Operations campaign.”
  • Concrete Donkey “is the ability to scatter an audio message to a large number of telephones, or repeatedly bomb a target number with the same message.”
  • Cannonball is a similar “bombing” tool for SMS messages, and Pitbull targets instant messaging accounts.
  • For those who prefer old-school communications, Serpent’s Tongue is a fax-bomb, designed for fax broadcasting to multiple phone numbers.
  • Imperial Barge can connect two target phones together in a call arbitrarily, for those times when GCHQ wants to force people to talk to each other.

Information disruption tools:

  • BUMPERCAR is a system that uses complaints to YouTube and other sites about “offensive content” to “disrupt and deny Internet-based terror videos and other material.”
  • Another tool, Silverlord, is used for “disruption of video-based websites hosting extremist content through concerted target discovery and content removal.”
  • Silverblade is used specifically to report terrorist content on the video site Dailymotion.

Misinformation and spoofing tools.

  • Underpass is used to “change outcome of online polls.”
  • Slipstream and Gateway can be used to manipulate traffic to a website, inflating its page views and raising its search rank to alter perception of its popularity.
  • Gestator can be used for “amplification of a given message, normally video, on popular multimedia websites (Youtube).”
  • Clean Sweep allows GCHQ to “masquerade Facebook Wall Posts for individuals or entire countries.”
  • Burlesque, an SMS robot, can send SMS messages spoofed from a particular user.
  • Scrapheap Challenge does “perfect spoofing of e-mails from Blackberry targets.”
  • Another tool, called Clumsy Beekeeper, may have been used in GCHQ’s targeting of Anonymous. It is an “IRC effects” tool that was still under development the last time the page was updated.
  • Chinese Firecracker is intended to crack passwords to forums and other sites so that analysts can post under someone else’s name.

Emergency surveillance bill to be fast-tracked despite 49 MPs’ opposition | The Guardian

The bill requires internet and phone companies to store the communications data generated by phone calls, email, texts and internet use for 12 months and make it accessible to police and security services.

  • Prime Minister insists police and spy agencies must retain snooping powers
  • Telecoms firms must keep records of calls, texts and emails for 12 months
  • The laws are intended to protect powers for GCHQ, MI5 and MI6
  • Government insists it is not an extension of the Snoopers’ Charter
  • Extraordinary cross-party deal between Cameron, Clegg and Miliband
  • Critics condemn the ‘stitch-up’ which will see laws ‘railroaded through’

Wall Street Joins U.S. Intelligence Cronies To Form Fascist “Cyber War Council”

The man behind the push appears to be ex-NSA chief Keith Alexander, who as I reported on last month, is now: Pimping Advice to Wall Street Banks for $1 Million a Month. As I mentioned in that post, one of Mr. Alexander’s most high profile clients is Wall Street’s largest lobbying group the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Unsurprisingly, SIFMA is behind the latest push to formally merge Wall Street with the government intelligence apparatus. Mr. Alexander isn’t wasting any time.

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) Concerned Banks Becoming Part of a War Council

AlanGrayson

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.), who has publicly questioned how Alexander could serve as a consultant without revealing any classified information, said Tuesday that Congress “needs to keep an eye on” the industry’s proposed working group.

“Because of the murky nature of cybersecurity, I am concerned that a council like this might propose either physical attacks or cyberattacks by the US military on the perceived source of the threats,” Grayson said in a statement. “This could in effect make the banks part of what would begin to look like a war council.”

Bloomberg reports that:

Wall Street’s biggest trade group has proposed a government-industry cyber war council to stave off terrorist attacks that could trigger financial panic by temporarily wiping out account balances, according to an internal document.

The proposal by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, known as Sifma, calls for a committee of executives and deputy-level representatives from at least eight U.S. agencies including the Treasury Department, the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security, all led by a senior White House official.

More centralization. This is the exact opposite of what we want or need. The establishment is very worried about the trend toward decentralization, and making its move on many fronts.

The trade association also reveals in the document that Sifma has retained former NSA director Keith Alexander to “facilitate” the joint effort with the government. Alexander, in turn, has brought in Michael Chertoff, the former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, and his firm, Chertoff Group.

Why All the Snowden Docs Should Be Public: An Interview with Cryptome

Before Snowden and Wikileaks grabbed the headlines, there was Cryptome. Launched in 1996, the website, or “digital library,” as its owners John Young and Deborah Natsios describe it, is a tome of classified documents. Including everything from lists of MI6 agents to details on nuclear technology, the archive currently stands at over 71,600 files, spanning nearly two decades of disclosures.

Among those is all the available information on the Snowden files, and the duo behind the venture are adamant that the entirety of the leaked NSA documents should be dumped online, rather than strategically trickled out by journalists. Cryptome has even made vague hints that the Snowden documents may be released in full this month.

Brics countries create $100bn bank to ease western grip on global finances | Global development | theguardian.com

The Brics group comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The bank, aimed at funding infrastructure projects in developing nations, will be based in Shanghai, and India will preside over its operations for the first five years, followed by Brazil and then Russia

The bank will begin with a subscribed capital of $50bn divided equally between its five founders, with an initial total of $10bn in cash put in over seven years and $40bn in guarantees. It is scheduled to start lending in 2016 and be open to membership by other countries, but the capital share of the Brics cannot drop below 55%.

Cannabis really can trigger paranoia | theguardian.com

We recruited 121 volunteers, all of whom had taken cannabis at least once before, and all of whom reported having experienced paranoid thoughts in the previous month (which is typical of half the population). None had been diagnosed with a mental illness. The volunteers were randomly chosen to receive an intravenous 1.5mg dose of either THC (the equivalent of a strong joint) or a placebo (saline). To track the effects of these substances, we used the most extensive form of assessment yet deployed to test paranoia, including a virtual-reality scenario, a real-life social situation, self-administered questionnaires, and expert interviewer assessments.

The results were clear: THC caused paranoid thoughts. Half of those given THC experienced paranoia, compared with 30% of the placebo group: that is, one in five had an increase in paranoia that was directly attributable to the THC. (Interestingly, the placebo produced extraordinary effects in certain individuals. They were convinced they were stoned, and acted accordingly. Because at the time we didn’t know who had been given the drug, we assumed they were high too.)

Pot unwelcome on federal land in Washington

Larry Chambers, a US Forest Service spokesperson says the agency is legally required to enforce federal laws on public lands they manage, even though Washington voters legalized recreational marijuana in November 2012.

This map of Washington shows what’s federal or tribal land. The highlighted green areas represent National Parks and National Forests, where the Forest Service stresses pot is illegal. You can’t possess it or smoke it or else face a fine.

Seattle City Attorney Apologizes for Taking Pot to Work – NBC News.com

Holmes, who helped sponsor Initiative 502, which made Washington the second state to legalize sales of small amounts of recreational marijuana, showed up at Seattle’s only legal pot store Tuesday to be one of the first Seattleites to make a purchase. But while the marijuana law has changed, “the workplace rule has not changed,” Holmes said in a statement Friday. After discussions with the city’s personnel department, he said, “I have volunteered to donate $3,000 to the Downtown Emergency Service Center. I apologize to my employees, all city employees and to the public.”

NSA is CRAZY

Video of NSA leaker Edward Snowden surfaced late Friday. Snowden was last seen on video back in June, when he appears on camera for The Guardian discussing the reasons for releasing the details of the NSA’s surveillance programs. Since then, Snowden received asylum in Russia and just recently was awarded the Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence award.

The Washington Post is out with the latest revelations from the Snowden leaks and it shows that the NSA relies on foreign telcos and “allied” intelligence agencies to scoop up data on email contact lists and instant messaging buddy lists to help build its giant database of connections.

And here’s the big problem: because all of this information is collected overseas, rather than at home, it’s not subject to “oversight” (and I use that term loosely) by the FISA court or Congress. Those two only cover oversight for domestic intelligence. The fact that the NSA can scoop up all this data overseas is just a bonus.

The latest revelations about the NSA’s collection of buddy lists and email address books pointed out that those issues weren’t covered by Congressional oversight, since they happened overseas. When the Washington Post questions Feinstein’s office about this, a senior staffer seemed unconcerned, mentioning that perhaps they should be asking questions about it

David Cameron has encouraged a Commons select committee to investigate whether the Guardian has broken the law or damaged national security by publishing secrets leaked by the National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.

“Glenn Greenwald, the thorn in the proverbial back of NSA and its colonial cousin GCHQ is leaving the Guardian to start his own news organization. Greenwald said ‘My partnership with the Guardian has been extremely fruitful and fulfilling: I have high regard for the editors and journalists with whom I worked and am incredibly proud of what we achieved. The decision to leave was not an easy one, but I was presented with a once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity that no journalist could possibly decline. Because this news leaked before we were prepared to announce it, I’m not yet able to provide any details of this momentous new venture, but it will be unveiled very shortly.’”

Journalists Jeremy Scahill and Laura Poitras will be working with Glenn Greenwald on a new media venture funded by billionaire eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Omidyar Network is a philanthropic investment firm dedicated to harnessing the power of markets to create opportunity for people to improve their lives. Established in 2004 by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, the organization invests in and helps scale innovative organizations to catalyze economic, social, and political change. To date, Omidyar Network has committed more than $270 million to for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations that foster economic advancement and encourage individual participation across multiple investment areas, including property rights, government transparency, and social media.

Army General Keith Alexander’s eight-year tenure was rocked this year by revelations contained in documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden about the agency’s widespread scooping up of telephone, email and social-media data.

Alexander has formalized plans to leave by next March or April, while his civilian deputy, John “Chris” Inglis, is due to retire by year’s end, according to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The report identifies 22 commentators with industry ties that suggest a financial interest in war. While they appeared on television or were quoted as experts 111 times, their links to military firms were disclosed only 13 of those times.

The following report documents the industry ties of Hadley, 21 other media commentators, and seven think tanks that participated in the media debate around Syria. Like Hadley, these individuals and organizations have strong ties to defense contractors and other defense- and foreign policy-focused firms with a vested interest in the Syria debate, but they were presented to their audiences with a veneer of expertise and independence, as former military officials, retired diplomats, and independent think tanks.

Shutdown Showdown

Senate leaders have reached an agreement on a compromise that would fund the government until Jan. 15 and extend the debt limit until Feb. 7.

“I think it’s important for people in the Republican Party around the country not to just come in at the end and say, ‘Congress was dysfunctional,’ or ‘Congress screwed up.’ That’s too easy to do,” King said. “Say who it was. Because it wasn’t Congress. It was one person who was able to steamroll Congress and unless we target him for what he is, he’s going to do it again. So I’m hoping other Republicans will join me and start going after this guy, and say we’re not going to let it happen again.”

John McCain is clearly glad to have this government shutdown mess behind him, going on the Senate floor today shortly after the bipartisan deal was announced to say the past few weeks have been “one of the more shameful chapters” of the Senate’s history.

Sen. Ted Cruz’ hometown newspaper, the Houston Chronicle, wishes it could take back its endorsement.

The Chronicle’s editorial board, which endorsed Cruz, R-Texas, in his 2012 race, now says it misses his predecessor, former Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

“When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November’s general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation – that he follow Hutchison’s example in his conduct as a senator,” The Chronicle said. "Obviously, he has not done so.

“Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution,” the board added.

“Is there a little bit of ransom paid? I mean, there is a provision in here that requires verification for recipients of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.”

Obama’s Curious Purge Of The Military

But Major General Michael Carey and Vice Admiral Tim Giardina (fired amidst rumors of misbehavior involving alcohol and gambling) are just the latest in a recent rash of firings in the military’s top ranks.

Are these the men standing between us and martial law? They have been fired over various things ranging from sexual harassment to lack of trust. One thing they all have in common is their combat roles. They were all commanders of combat units.

The firing of two nuclear commanders in a week adds to a body count that suggests we have either the most corrupt and incompetent general staff in history or our military is being reshaped for other purposes.

Oh no… GMO?

SEATTLE — Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced Wednesday that his office is filing a suit against the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) for violation of the state’s campaign disclosure law.

Ferguson alleges the GMA skirted the rules in its $7.2 million contribution to the "No on 522″ campaign and that the association illegally collected and spent the monies while shielding the identify of its contributors.

“When Washington state voters overwhelming approved Initiative 276 in 1972, they voiced their desire for transparency and openness in elections,” Ferguson said. “Truly fair elections demand all sides follow the rules by disclosing who their donors are and how much they are spending to advocate their views.”

NSA Fallout

Today’s top-secret document leaked by Snowden reveals that “procedures approved on 3 October 2011 now allow for use of certain United States person names and identifiers as query terms when reviewing collected FAA 702 data.”

FAA 702 is a reference to section 702 of a 2008 law that amended the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Those amendments created a warrantless surveillance process that could be employed by NSA analysts, but Congress never intended it to be used domestically against American citizens: A congressional report accompanying the law claimed it allows electronic surveillance only of “persons located outside the United States in order to acquire foreign intelligence information.”

“The panel will not report to the DNI. As the DNI’s statement yesterday made clear, the review group will brief its interim findings to the president within 60 days of its establishment, and provide a final report with recommendations no later than December 15 2013.”

She added: "As we announced on Friday, the review group will be made up of independent, outside experts. The DNI’s role is one of facilitation, and the group is not under the direction of or led by the DNI.

“The members require security clearances and access to classified information so they need to be administratively connected to the government, and the DNI’s office is the right place to provide that. The review process and findings will be the group’s.”

Levison said he started Lavabit 10 years ago to capitalize on public concerns about the Patriot Act, offering customers a paid service — between $8 and $16 a year — that would encrypt their emails in ways that would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for law enforcement agents to decipher. He said that until he shut down, his small company was generating about $100,000 in revenue annually with about 10,000 users paying for the encryption service.

But inviting Hayden to do exactly that is what establishment media outlets do continually. Just yesterday, Face the Nation featured Hayden as the premiere guest to speak authoritatively about how trustworthy the NSA is, how safe it keeps us, and how wise President Obama is for insisting that all of its programs continue. As usual, no mention was made of the role he played in secretly implementing an illegal warrantless spying program aimed directly at the American people.

You’ve got this metadata. It’s now [currently] queried under very, very narrow circumstances. If the nation suffers an attack, there are other things you could do with that metadata. There are other tools. So in that kind of emergency perhaps you would go to the court and say, ‘In addition to these very limited queries we’re allowed to do, we actually want to launch some complex algorithms against it.’"

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent, says he was wrong to ignore marijuana’s medical potential when he wrote an opinion piece in 2009 called "Why I would Vote No on Pot

Polling shows people are increasingly open to the notion that not all drugs should be outlawed. A survey by Pew Research Center back in March found a majority of Americans – 52 percent – now say marijuana should be legal. More strikingly, 72 percent agreed that government efforts to enforce marijuana laws cost more than they are worth, and three in four agreed the drug has “legitimate medical uses.”

Today in America, one in every 15 black men is behind bars.

CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta cuts through the smoke and travels around the world to uncover the highs and lows of cannabis.

New Questions in Hastings Death

Michael Hastings was working on an expose on CIA director John Brennan at the time of his suspicious death, the wife of the Rolling Stone journalist said on Monday.

Last month, a source sent San Diego 6 News an email from Fred Burton, the president of CIA contractor Straffor. The email claims that Brennan was leading the “witch hunts” against journalists.

Text of the email, which was posted on WikiLeaks, read: “Brennan is behind the witch hunts of investigative journalists learning information from inside the beltway sources.”

Report to Class

People in the UK now fit into seven social classes, a major survey conducted by the BBC suggests.

It says the traditional categories of working, middle and upper class are outdated, fitting 39% of people.

It found a new model of seven social classes ranging from the elite at the top to a \”precariat\” – the poor, precarious proletariat – at the bottom.

More than 161,000 people took part in the Great British Class Survey, the largest study of class in the UK.

Arkansas Oil Spill

On Friday, 22 homes were evacuated in a community in the state of Arkansas after a portion of an ExxonMobil pipeline burst leaving nearly 10,000 barrels of tar sand crude oil oozing through the streets. Critics of the Keystone XL pipeline say that cases like this will only multiply once the controversial channel is built.

Residents of Mayflower, Arkansas found pools of crude filling their lawns this weekend

People living in a small community near Little Rock, Ark., are being forced from their home and may not come back for weeks after an oil pipeline ruptured. Manuel Bojorquez reports.

Environmental groups said the rupture of the Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) pipe on March 29 in Mayflower, Arkansas, shows why Obama should reject Keystone, which would be a major new conduit between the U.S. and Canada for a type of fuel critics say is more corrosive than more conventional forms of oil.

While states with the most pipeline mileage — like Texas,California, and Louisiana — also have the most incidents, breaks occur throughout the far-flung network of pipelines. Winding under city streets and countryside, these lines stay invisible most of the time. Until they fail.

Since 1986, pipeline accidents have killed more than 500 people, injured over 4,000, and cost nearly seven billion dollars in property damages. Using government data, ProPublica has mapped thousands of these
incidents in a new interactive news application [9], which provides
detailed information about the cause and costs of reported incidents going back
nearly three decades.

Tightly controlled by ExxonMobil, which was responsible for the spill, access to even the parking lot is not permitted. A security guard now stops anyone without a red lanyard and ID badge from passing into the gated compound.

A 1980 law ensures that diluted bitumen is not classified as oil, and companies transporting it in pipelines do not have to pay into the federal Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund. Other conventional crude producers pay 8 cents a barrel to ensure the fund has resources to help clean up some of the 54,000 barrels of pipeline oil that spilled 364 times last year.

Answering RT\’s detailed questions, ExxonMobil stated they are
paying for all costs related to the spill. However, the company
didn\’t reveal how much it contributes to the OSLTF, or the value of
the company\’s crude which is not taxed by the law.

Exxon Mobil will pay all of the costs related to last week\’s oil spill in an Arkansas neighborhood, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

Between 3,500 and 5,000 barrels of heavy crude leaked from a ruptured pipeline — not 12,000 barrels, as previously reported, according to Exxon Mobil spokesman Alan Jeffers.

Gun Debate DOA?

Colorado prosecutors will seek the death penalty for the man charged with killing 12 moviegoers during a showing of the Batman film \”The Dark Knight Rises\” last year.

The 225-page National School Shield report isn\’t offering specific recommendations for how many armed staff each school should have or the types of guns those people should carry — though Hutchinson said the firearms could range from \”sidearms, to shotguns, to AR-15s.\”

The timing of the release is no coincidence. It comes as the gun control/safety debate continues to heat up in the Senate, where lawmakers are at work on a deal that would expand background checks. While the NRA plan is likely to garner a lot of attention given the lobby\’s position in the national gun conversation

Border Drones

EPIC recently launched a petition asking the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection to limit the use of unmanned aircraft for purposes of patrolling the border. Other groups speaking out against the use of drones include the American Civil Liberties Union [PDF] and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

\”National Anti-Drone Days of Action\” from April 4 through 7 in San Diego start a month of protests across the United States against the policy and practice of drone warfare and secret surveillance.

WA Pot Bars Cross the Line

Washington officials say it\’s not OK for bars to allow marijuana use, and they\’ll take quick steps to address that.

The announcement from the state Liquor Control Board on Wednesday followed a recent Associated Press report about establishments in Olympia and Tacoma that allow people to consume marijuana on-site.

As for Unfilter, obviously I am not in the US… and as much as I would like it I don’t think you can really do world news on the show, but a slightly more international perspective would be interesting. If I can help with clips from the UK or access to media that’s IP blocked, let me know.

Iraq 10 years Later

Stunning new statistics from the Watson Institute at Brown University’s ‘Costs of War’ report show that the decade-long War in Iraq has resulted in at least 189,000 deaths and cost more than $2 trillion. Expenses, including interest, could top $6 trillion through 2053.

The 10-year anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq marks a striking failure of accountability on the part of the United States, the United Kingdom and Iraq itself, Human Rights Watch said today.

After the film’s whirlwind exploration of Cheney’s 40 long years of public service, what lingers in the air is this same spooky realization that despite everything – the Iraq War, the absence of WMD’s, the warrantless surveillance, the discoveries at Abu Ghraib – Cheney regrets nothing. “If I had to do it over again,” Cheney says at the end of the film. “I’d do it over in a minute.”

Dick Cheney, in a 1994 interview, lists countless reasons for America not to have invaded Baghdad. Funny how every reason still bears heavy relevance to our position there now.

Cyprus’ Bad Week

That panic forced Cyprus to declare a bank holiday. Then it killed the plan to tax bank deposits, with parliament voting it down. Global stock markets, which had dipped on the initial news of the bailout plan, leveled out as if the whole thing was a false alarm.

At first blush, it seems only fair that the Russians pony up. After all, the tens of billions of euros that Russians have parked in Cypriot bank accounts helped trigger the island’s financial crisis. And Moscow protested loudly when some European leaders wanted to levy stiff taxes on Cypriot bank accounts, a plan that now has been scuppered. Cyprus now is almost €6 billion ($7.7 billion) short of the money it needs to cut a deal with the so-called troika of European creditors and the International Monetary Fund.

But counting on aid from Russia is a bad idea for Cyprus—and for the rest of Europe. Cyprus has already gotten a €2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) loan from Moscow, and it can’t borrow more without greatly increasing its debt ceiling, something the troika won’t permit. Instead of offering a loan, Russia might ask for rights to natural gas fields in the Mediterranean south of Cyprus. Europe already depends heavily on Russia for natural gas, and extending Russia’s control over future supplies would almost certainly boost gas prices across the region, Athanios Orphanides, a former governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, told Bloomberg Television this morning. “It would be a huge economic cost,” he said.

Bitcoin BOOMS this Week

One of the side effects of the Eurozone crisis could be that some people turn to the deregulated, decentralised currency when they otherwise may not have even considered it. The events in Cyprus this past week – where it looked like the government, in desperate need of money, had planned to impose a levy on savings – seemed to have coincided with a slight spike in downloads of Bitcoin mobile apps in Spain, a country with its own wobbly economic situation.

U.N. investigator: U.S. drone strikes violate Pakistan sovereignty

After days of meeting with Pakistani officials, the United Nations official investigating Washington’s global campaign of drone strikes attacked the legal and strategic basis for the robotic war in its biggest battlefield. And he raised doubts over whether Americans operating the drones can actually distinguish terrorists from average Pakistanis.

+ Not about Changing US Policy

Though Emmerson’s findings likely won’t change U.S. policy, Imtiaz Gul, a Pakistani security analyst who provided Emmerson with case studies of civilian victims of drone strikes, said the U.N. investigator’s research does shed light on civilian victims of the U.S. drone program and highlights the risky precedent set by carrying out missile strikes on foreign territory without that government’s consent.

“It’s not about forcing the U.S. to change its policy,” Gul said. “It’s more about educating on an issue that could create dangerous precedence for other countries.”

Washington state names “pot czar” after legalizing marijuana

Prominent policy analyst and UCLA professor Mark Kleiman has won Washington State’s consulting contract on I–502 implementation.

Reformers have had a “love/hate” relationship with Kleiman over the years. He supports some of our issues, like marijuana legalization — sort of.

He acknowledges the impact of prohibition in increasing the harmfulness of addictive drugs to their users, but states as nearly a fact the assumption that overall harm would go up with legalization nonetheless — while admonishing the rest of us not to make assumptions about the positive effects of even just marijuana legalization.

But Kleiman harshed the CNN host’s giggly buzz by not laughing back, and then taking a serious tone: “No, because I think whether the people on our team have used cannabis at one point or another … is irrelevant to the job we’ve been chosen to do.”

A 2,000-Page Lubricant for Keystone XL: State Dept. report assumes the oil sands would be exploited regardless of whether the pipeline is built.

But it will certainly add a new element to the already robust climate change and energy debate around the $7 billion proposed project. The new report does not make any policy recommendations, but its conclusion that the environmental and climate change impacts are manageable could provide Mr. Obama political cover if he decides to approve the pipeline.

The White House has yet to embrace the proposed expansion of the Keystone XL pipeline, but the American public is on board.

$250 Million in U.S. Aid for Egypt

Secretary of State John Kerry announced Sunday that the United States would provide $250 million in assistance to Egypt after Egypt\’s president promised to move ahead with negotiations with the International Monetary Fund over economic reforms.

\”The United States will now provide the first $190 million of our pledged $450 million in budget support funds,\” Kerry said, adding that Washington has also pledged an additional $60 million for a new joint Egyptian-American Enterprise Fund.

Egypt will get the aid after \”Morsi\’s assurance that he plans to complete the IMF process,\” Kerry said, referring to a $4.8 billion loan Egypt is currently negotiating with the International Monetary Fund. The loan was agreed in principle last November but was suspended at Egypt\’s request due to violent street protests the following month.

The release of the rest of the $450 million and the other $550 million tranche of the $1 billion in US aid that President Obama promised last year will be tied to what US officials see as successful reforms within the country.
Kerry said the separate $60 million in aid will be for a new fund for \”direct support of key engines of democratic change.\” The top US diplomat added that the funding for that program could rise to $300 million over time.

Perpetual National State of Emergency

During an emergency, the writ of Habeas corpus can be suspended, as can the privilege of a trial with a grand jury for National Guard members. (Habeas corpus is the part of the constitution that says you cannot be detained without reason or a trial—and when it\’s suspended, you could theoretically be held indefinitely without either.) Abraham Lincoln is infamous for suspending it.

The United States has been in a state of national emergency continuously for over 30 years, since the Carter administration invoked it premised on the \”situation in Iran\”.

Pot Attack

It turns out Peter B. Bensinger, who in the letter is representing the lobbying organization Save Our Society from Drugs, has a huge financial stake in preventing the legalization of cannabis. He is the founder and CEO of a drug testing company.

The Prescription Drug Research Center (PDRC) is a subsidiary of BDA that provides consultation, monitoring the nonmedical use of specific prescribed controlled substances and efforts to reduce the nonmedical use of these medicines. BDA strives to provide quality services that exceed our customers’ expectations everyday.

Some of the garbage they repeat

The latest came Wednesday from Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who told Holder to focus on prosecuting larger federal crimes as he deals with the fallout of automatic spending cuts ordered by Congress.

\”If you\’re going to be — because of budget cuts — prioritizing matters, I would suggest there are more serious things than minor possession of marijuana, but it\’s a personal view,\” Leahy told Holder, adding that other states are sure to follow the lead of Washington and Colorado.

Senate committee approves Brennan as CIA director

The full Senate could consider John Brennan\’s nomination by week\’s end, which it is expected to confirm despite some senators\’ reservations.

Rand Paul Leads Filibuster of Brennan Nomination

\”I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan\’s nomination for the C.I.A.,\” Mr. Paul began. \”I will speak until I can no longer speak. I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important, that your rights to trial by jury are precious, that no American should be killed by a drone on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court.\”

Mr. Paul is the first senator to use an actual filibuster after the Senate reached a deal earlier this year to take some basic steps to limit the filibuster.

Over-hyped Sequester

Israel said Obama told him \”how focused he would be on winning a House majority for the Democrats,\” many of whom complained that the president did not do enough during his first term to help members on the Hill.

In response, McConnell said Obama and Democrats have \”expended enormous amounts of energy to advance that goal — rebooting his political organization, provoking manufactured crises with Congress, engineering show votes in the Senate, and traveling around the country to campaign relentlessly against his opponents. That\’s why the Sequester went into effect in its current form. That\’s why Washington continues to careen needlessly from crisis to crisis. And that\’s why we find ourselves in a situation where more than 1,400 days have passed since Senate Democrats last passed a budget. What a sad state of affairs for our country, and for the notion of governance in general.\”

Eric Holder: Drone Strike To Kill U.S. Citizen On American Soil Legal, Hypothetically

Attorney General Eric Holder is not entirely ruling out a scenario under which a drone strike would be ordered against Americans on U.S. soil, but says it has never been done previously and he could only see it being considered in an extraordinary circumstance.

Anti-government groups on rise

The number of anti-government groups in the United States is at an all-time high and has increased 800 percent since President Barack Obama took office, according to a Southern Poverty Law Center report.

Google Transparency Report now includes the FBI\’s National Security Letters

Americans won\’t feel much more comfortable now that Google has added the FBI\’s National Security Letters to the mix. The investigative branch wants the numbers vague for secrecy\’s sake, but curious residents at least have access to annual data that shows the range of requests for information and roughly how many users were affected — in this case, about 1,000 to 2,000 Google account holders every year since 2009
