LG Announces webOS Open-Source Edition

LG in cooperation with South Korea’s NIPA government agency are working on making webOS suitable as a more open platform with open connectivity. They are still looking to commercialize it as an open-source platform, LG announced this morning.

GNOME 3.28 Release Notes

GNOME 3.28 is the latest version of GNOME 3, and is the result of 6 months’ hard work by the GNOME community. It contains major new features, as well as many smaller improvements and bug fixes. In total, the release incorporates 25832 changes, made by approximately 838 contributors.

TING

New Major GStreamer Release

The GStreamer team is proud to announce a new major feature release of your favourite cross-platform multimedia framework!

Firefox 59 released, these are the key changes

Performance enhancements to the Firefox Home page mean it should now load quicker than before. The speed up comes by leveraging cache files.

Private Internet Access goes Open Source

Today marks the start of an exciting shift over here at Private Internet Access. As long-time supporters of the Free and Open Source Software community, we have started the process of open sourcing our software, and over the next six months we will be releasing the source code for all our client-side applications, as well as libraries and extensions.

DigitalOcean

OpenSnitch

OpenSnitch is a GNU/Linux port of the Little Snitch application firewall.

Spotifyd: A spotify daemon

An open source Spotify client running as a UNIX daemon. Spotifyd streams music just like the official client, but is more lightweight, and supports more platforms. Spotifyd also supports the Spotify Connect protocol, which makes it show up as a device that can be controlled from the official clients.

Spotifyd requires a Spotify Premium account.

Exclusive: The hottest smartwatch of CES isn’t running Android Wear — it’s Open webOS | Android Central

We tracked down the Audi/LG watch — still officially nameless, by the way — in Las Vegas today, and we can exclusively reveal that it’s not running Android Wear as originally believed. In fact, it’s packing completely different software based on LG’s Open webOS.

The most beautiful tablet you’ll ever own comes with an Audi Q7

While the primary purpose of the tablet is entertainment for your rear passengers, the Audi Tablet also controls most of the car’s electronic functions. Passengers in the Q7 can have a look at the current route via a map app and can even set a new waypoint and pass it to the main stack in the front via WiFi. Music choices, media access, speed and even data showing if your driver has been keeping up with the maintenance are all on tap. Charging and a serial port that interfaces with the car’s CANBus — for communication with the auto’s systems — are on the back of the device and a standard micro-USB port and headphone jack are, too

This is the most insane wireless router in the history of mankind | The Verge

The router in question is the D-Link AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router, and make no mistake: as these things go it’s more than solid. Six antennas, support for the latest 802.11 protocols, and speeds up to 3.2Gbps. And this is just one of D-Link’s new Ultra series (it’ll be available on Newegg tomorrow for $309.99).

But mostly it just looks bonkers.

MakerBot makes 3D printing more realistic with metal, wood and stone – CNET

MakerBot announced Tuesday here at the 2015 International CES that it’s using new PLA Composite Filaments made with composites of real metal, stone and wood. Basically, these materials, in powder form, are mixed with regular PLA filament to create a new special type of filament. As the result, the printed objects will provide more of the look and certain characteristics of the materials being used.

For example, an object printed using metal PLA filament can be magnetized and is heavier than the same object printed using regular pure-plastic PLA filaments.

In order to print the new materials, however, a new extruder is needed for each material type. The good news is all MakerBot’s fifth-generation 3D printers support a Smart Extruder, which can be easily swapped out.

FBI Director: Sony’s ‘Sloppy’ North Korean Hackers Revealed Their IP Addresses | WIRED

Speaking at a Fordham Law School cybersecurity conference Wednesday, Comey said that he has “very high confidence” in the FBI’s attribution of the attack to North Korea. And he named several of the sources of his evidence, including a “behavioral analysis unit” of FBI experts trained to psychologically analyze foes based on their writings and actions. He also said that the FBI compared the Sony attack with their own “red team” simulations to determine how the attack could have occurred. And perhaps most importantly, Comey now says that the hackers in the attack failed on multiple occasions to use the proxy servers that bounce their Internet connection through an obfuscating computer somewhere else in the world, revealing IP addresses that tied them to North Koreans.

In his statement Wednesday, Comey acknowledged the skepticism about the FBI’s attributions claims. But he responded that “they don’t have the facts that I have. They don’t see what I see.”

PC-BSD:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

  • Download PC-BSD 9.1-RC1

  • For full release versions, along with the full selection of CD, DVD and USB images, PC-BSD also offers ready to use VirtualBox and VMWare images

  • The Install:
    • Your choice of Desktop Environments, Installer automatically adjusts the defaults depending on how much ram you have installed
    • Your options: KDE, Gnome, LXDE or XFCE
    • Another option is TrueOS, a console based server, FreeBSD with the CLI version of Warden, the PBI system, ZFS Boot Environments and other utilities
    • The install also offers vanilla FreeBSD Server
  • Disk Partitioning
    • PC-BSD allows you to do a full ‘root on ZFS’ install (only recommended if you have 4 or more GB of ram), including creating many different datasets with different settings such as compression for optimal use of space
    • You have the option of the Basic Wizard, the Advanced Wizard, or the FreeBSD CLI partitioning system
    • The advanced Wizard also allows you to setup more complex ZFS mirror or RAIDZ
    • You can choose to optionally encrypt your hard disk using GELI
  • Warden
    • Warden is a Graphical and Command Line based manager for FreeBSD’s Jails feature
    • In FreeBSD a jail is a secondary installation of the OS files, which is then started in a chroot, and the processes, network and user/group IDs are separate
    • Allows you to manage three types of jails:
    • Traditional Jail – run internet applications in a container, if compromised, the attacker only gains access to the jail, not the host OS
    • Ports Jail – less secure version if jails, allows you to install applications from the FreeBSD ports tree without interfering with the PBI package manager in the host OS
    • Linux Jail – install Debian or Gentoo in a jail, and run your linux applications in a full linux environment
    • Warden also allows you to stop a jail, pack it up, and move it to a different physical machine
    • Warden also allows you to install meta-packages into the jails with a single click, allowing you to deploy apache+php+mysql in no time
    • Warden can back your jails storage with ZFS, allowing you to take advantage of ZFS features such as snapshots, clones (writable snapshots), revert to a previous snapshot, etc
  • Warden Wiki

Chris’ notes:
Hardware:
HP Envy 17 – Wifi was not detected. Only the vesa video driver seemed to work.

VM: No major issue, video performance is not great.

If you consider yourself someone who likes to stay current on open source software releases, try out new betas, and upgrade right after release – PC-BSD is probably not for you.

I failed to find the KDE desktop compelling for me. A good enough implementation, but error pages in certain areas and a lack of anything particular interesting drove me to try the other desktops.

This is one, of two audiences I think PC-BSD could be great for. The first is Gnome 2 lovers. Gnome 2.32 ships with PC-BSD as an option, along with LXDE and XFCE. I tried them all, but Gnome 2 was the most fun. It really was a treat to set up the old workhorse the way I used to like it.

It also made me realize, the world has moved on and Gnome 2 is just not for me anymore.

However, if the work horse aspect is important to you – then you might be the second category of user I think PC-BSD is great for. The enterprise workstation.

FreeBSD is an awesomely cohesive and well built system, even as an outsider in a strange new land I can detect and appreciate the collective thought behind this operating system. On top of that, it’s stable, fast, and has one of the best file systems in the world for managing and protecting large sets of data.

The speed and utility of the Gnome 2 desktop is great, the XFCE setup would also work quite well in a workstation type setup.

Combine that with years of updates, iXsystem’s enterprise expertise and you could have a major contender in the workstation market.

All that said, if you want the latest version of HandBrake (PBI: 0.9.3 current: 0.9.8), PiTiVi ( PBI: 0.13.4 current: 0.15.2), or Chromium (PBI: 21.0 Current: 22.0) and so on, you’ll need to look else where.

Much of this can be alleviated by taking advantage of the FreeBSD ports tree, which PC-BSD makes it easy to setup with just a few clicked.

If wireless and 3D acceleration are important features for you, test the system first.

For users like myself, there are areas of the system that feel a bit unpolished. Perhaps the result of a small, but dedicated team. And despite the team’s amazing efforts, it still feels like the FreeBSD desktop market could be shrinking as the Linux game market heats up.

  • Public presentation of Trisquel GNU/Linux!

  • The 5.5 STS edition, codename Brigantia, was released on April 16, 2012.

  • Brigantia is an STS (short term support) version, which will be supported for one year after release.

Software versions and distro editions:

This release is based on Ubuntu 11.10 and as always it contains only free software, including:

Chris:

A great distro, that is pleasant to use, and easy on the eyes with smart choices made. However, it does feel a bit heavy with its message if a few spots (might be off putting to some switchers) and with it’s probable GNU/Power user target demographic, perhaps being based on Arch might draw more interest.

Matt:

As you can see in the video I recorded during my testing, the hardware support is fantastic and mirrors Ubuntu proper. That said, Gnash is painful to use and the firmware restrictions did affect the abilities of some wireless devices. This distro is otherwise, no different that Ubuntu, from which it is based on. As for seeking help in their forums, be prepared for attack of the RMS clones when asking ANYTHING to do with proprietary options such as firmware, etc. . If I was a new user, I’d be looking elsewhere. For myself, I am keeping it on an old mini-tower running LXDE.

  • Google will release Android 5.0 with a whole new UI.
  • We will all still be using X11 (and not Wayland) by years end.
  • Windows Phone 7 sales will be incredibly slow, causing Nokia to come up with a new strategy. There will be much laughter.
  • The Raspberry Pi will become available and sell out faster than they can make them.
  • Mint will continue to gain popularity… then suddenly drop down significantly (mirroring PCLinuxOS’s rise and fall in user share).
  • Intel will start (or join) another new Linux distro (forgetting about Moblin, Meego and Tizen).
  • Redhat will make more money and Fedora will continue to lose market-share.
  • Canonical will transition away from the desktop. Ubuntu desktop will live on, but receive less love. We will complain much.
  • btrfs will become the default FS on popular Linux distros. Fedora will ship with a major btrfs bug that gets Chris or Bryan really worked up. OMG!

It’s our last episode of 2010, and so it’s time to whip out our crystal balls and future-vision goggles, and tell you our predictions for what is in store for the coming year. Will 2011 bring about the robot apocalypse? Life on other planets? Warp drive? The death of Net Neutrality?

Tune in to hear some of the guys’ top predictions, as well as a few from our audience.

    Show Feeds:

    Jeremy’s:

    • Someone will finally file a major lawsuit against FaceBook for their shifting privacy settings, as it will result in some sort of corporate coup or celebrity scandal. FB will win the lawsuit, but it will bring the issue to light in such a way that many people will finally learn to protect their personal information from being so publicly available.
    • Major game developers will embrace the mobile platform in bigger ways than ever before. We’ll probably see a big “Mobile Gaming Expo” be announced in 2011.
    • The “New Space Race” will ramp up. Technological and economical innovations will begin to reshape the way we look at space flight. Examples: commercial space flights (orbit only), advancements in air and waste recycling, possibly even real-world designs for an artificial gravity ship (fueled by centrifugal force – a spinny ship).
    • A personal prediction — I will lose 20-25 lbs quickly (by March), but be unable to shed more than that and will give up on my diet.
    • Jeremy will realize that ass-storage is incredibly convenient.

    Chris’

    • Intel light peak ships – Idea from @MichealKenny on twitter
    • Amazon Launches an Android App store with Custom DRM. It’s a hit, but starts soft.
    • Google will attempt to better integrate into the Enterprise document management systems. IE, it will import folders, rights, etc, in realtime two ways. And translate that into the Google docs world. It will be used to migrate people over time to Google Docs from MS office.
    • HP becomes the largest hardware competitor to the iPad. They’ll have a big line up, running WebOS.
    • Chris’ hair takes over Jupiter Broadcasting.

    Alan’s

    • Alan will learn to use Google Docs.
    • Alan still won’t watch DIE HARD.
    • Alan FINALLY meet Steve Pool, Alan’s hero & favorite local weather man.

    The Internet’s

    • EastCoastGirl: Copyright bullshit will begin to breakdown and MPAA and RIAA will finally come to their senses & start actually using Internet
    • Firix: Everyone will mention the Apocalypse that much more often since we’re closer to 2012
    • TommyBrun: Around summer 2011, Wikileaks will still be releasing stuff, but the general public has stopped caring.
    • nean0901: J@N will increase in popularity exponentially and get mentioned on Good Morning America.
    • rikai & Angela:  War with North Korea (and maybe China)
    • vs8: Many UFO sightings
