UBports release OTA 3 — This update brings some new features and bug fixes atop the Ubuntu Touch 15.04 base. New features include some new packages requested by the community, the default start page and search provider was changed over to DuckDuckGo, and not displaying the keyboard when working with multiple windows. This over-the-air update has also removed the Ubuntu Store from the App Scope.
Ubuntu Touch working on Android app support — “Project Anbox”. Anbox – a shorted form of ‘Android-in-a-Box” – is a community effort which allows Android apps to execute in a container in a more native way rather than the more common approach of using an Android emulator,
LEDE and OpenWrt merge — The merged project will use the code base of the former LEDE project.
Fuchsia available for the Pixelbook — Fuchsia—which only started development in 2016—is Google’s third operating system after Chrome OS and Android.
Meltdown and Spectre — Meltdown and Spectre exploit critical vulnerabilities in modern processors. These hardware vulnerabilities allow programs to steal data which is currently processed on the computer. While programs are typically not permitted to read data from other programs, a malicious program can exploit Meltdown and Spectre to get hold of secrets stored in the memory of other running programs. This might include your passwords stored in a password manager or browser, your personal photos, emails, instant messages and even business-critical documents.
Law Center and Conservancy updates — Because the SFLC has amended its trademark cancellation petition with a fraud claim, the SFC’s motion to toss the complaint must be refiled after the fraud issue been considered.

A developer long involved in Coreboot/Libreboot development is trying to call attention to “uncorrectable freedom and security issues” on x86 platforms with nearly all post-2009 Intel systems and post-2013 AMD systems.

Linux kernel lawsuit SCO v IBM is alive, 13 years and counting

At its core, SCO Group, then named Caldera Systems, filed suit (PDF) against IBM in March 2003 for allegedly contributing sections of commercial UNIX code from UNIX System V—which the SCO Group claimed it owned—to the Linux kernel’s codebase. SCO Group claimed that the alleged presence of its proprietary code in the open source kernel devalued its proprietary code and that by making the source code available, IBM had violated its license agreement with SCO Group. Along the way, SCO filed for bankruptcy, and the group claimed that anyone who used Linux owed them money. All the while, Novell successfully claimed ownership of the allegedly infringing code and agreed to indemnify Linux users.

KDE is going to provide an ownCloud installation to let Plasma and KDE PIM (Kontact) users sync their data: you can already use ownCloud with cardDAV, calDAV and webDAV protocols to keep contacts, calendars and files synced across your devices, including the ones powered by Plasma and Kontact.

The next step is providing an ownCloud app to sync Plasma configurations and manage them.

Warsow 2.0 adds a tutorial level to help new gamers, many graphical effects were revamped, weapon parameters were tweaked, new HUDs, and many other changes.

The Warsow 2.0 renderer is reported to be 30~50% faster for overall performance, reduced vRAM footprint for textures, KTX texture format support, support for the GLSL binary cache, multi-threading to speed-up map loading, and many other interesting changes.

But suddenly he doesn’t seem crazy anymore. After the Snowden revelations, and all the other major and minor privacy breaches of the past few years, his paranoia now seems justified — even rational:

He warned of the growing danger of DRM in his great short story The Right to Read (1997).
He refuses to own a cellphone, on the grounds that it might be used as a tracking or covert listening device. This still sounds slightly paranoid, but looks increasingly possible.
Stallman considers cloud computing dangerous. In 2008 I thought this was alarmist; now nobody trusts the cloud.
He’s always held that proprietary software cannot be trusted. Windows 10’s shady behaviour proves that he has a point.

Xiaomi’s Linux Laptop To Enter Production ‘Early Next Year’

The model with a 12.5-inch screen will be manufactured by Inventec (who make laptops for Acer, Toshiba and HP), with an initial order of 250,000 units.

The slightly larger device is to be made by Compal Electronics (known for manufacturing Apple devices, and various PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo games consoles), with Xiaomi placing an order for 300,000 units.

We are proud to announce the release candidate of Kodi 14.2 in which we further try to improve stability. As you may all know by now, we have a new name, a new logo, and a wide variety of new features, but underneath the new coat of paint remains the same software we all love. 14.2 will become the the second and final bug-fix release in the Helix range. Kodi 14.2 Release Candidate Available

Windows 10 to make the Secure Boot alt-OS lock out a reality

Should this stand, we can envisage OEMs building machines that will offer no easy way to boot self-built operating systems, or indeed, any operating system that doesn’t have appropriate digital signatures. This doesn’t cut out Linux entirely—there have been some collaborations to provide Linux boot software with the “right” set of signatures, and these should continue to work—but it will make it a lot less easy.

The BQ Aquaris Ubuntu Phone’s Kernel Appears To Be A Toxic Mess

Carsten Munk of the Mer Project and Chief Research Engineer of Jolla has raised some concerns about the Linux kernel used by the BQ Aquaris E4.5 smart-phone running Ubuntu Touch. The kernel appears to have module source-code marked as confidential and other markings that would not comply with the GPLv2 license of the Linux kernel.

In a blog post out today, the Linux Android-based kernel used by Ubuntu on their first smart-phone is difficult to find the official source tree. When finding a kernel source tree for the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition Phone, Carsten was greeted by many “confidential and proprietary” statements from MediaTek, the company whose SoC is powering the phone. In other modules are confidential and proprietary licenses from other vendors too.

Some of you might have seen today’s blog post from Carsten Munk, from the
Mer project, where he pointed to conflicting comments in the kernel sources
of the Ubuntu phone for bq devices.

We are working with bq to understand the situation and planning to publish
the final E4.5 Ubuntu edition sources next week. We are confident that
these will address any questions raised by the preview source tree.

ownCloud Client 1.8 Has Been Officially Released with New Desktop Sharing Feature

“This release brings a new integration into the operating system file manager. With 1.8.0, there is a new context menu that opens a dialog to allow the user to create a public link on a synced file. This link can be forwarded to other users who get access to the file via ownCloud,” says Klaas Freitag in the official release announcement.

BioShock Infinite Now Available For Linux, Demands Binary Graphics Drivers

BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games. BioShock Infinite is powered by Unreal Engine 3 and was released for all other platforms in late 2013 while the Linux release is coming one and a half years later. This game used DirectX 11 on Windows while for porting it over to Linux is using eON for translating to OpenGL.

Microsoft to Invest in Rogue Android Startup Cyanogen – Digits – WSJ

People familiar with the matter say Microsoft is putting money into Cyanogen, which is building a version of the Android mobile-operating system outside of Google’s auspices.

Microsoft would be a minority investor in a roughly $70 million round of equity financing that values Cyanogen in the high hundreds of millions, one of the people said. The person said the financing round could grow with other strategic investors that have expressed interest in Cyanogen because they’re also eager to diminish Google’s control over Android. The identity of the other potential investors couldn’t be learned.

“We’re going to take Android away from Google,” said Kirt McMaster, Cyanogen’s chief executive, in a brief interview last week. The next day, at an industry event sponsored by tech news service The Information, McMaster said Cyanogen had raised $100 million to date. Previously the company had disclosed that it raised $30 million of funding. The company spokeswoman declined to make McMaster available for this story.

McMaster said more than 50 million people use a version of the Cyanogen Android operating system, most of whom have installed it in place of their phone’s initial operating system.

To spread adoption more quickly, Cyanogen is working on deals with hardware makers to install the software on their devices. It recently signed a deal with Indian smartphone maker Micromax to ship handsets with Cyanogen’s software and is close to announcing more such deals, say people familiar with the matter.

Lumina-DE is a lightweight, BSD licensed desktop environment designed specifically for use on FreeBSD (although it should be easily portable to other Unix-like OS’s as well).

The Lumina Desktop Environment (Lumina for short) is a lightweight, XDG-compliant, BSD-licensed desktop environment that focuses specifically on streamlining the ability to get work done while minimizing system overhead. It is specifically designed for PC-BSD® and FreeBSD, but has also been ported to many other BSD and Linux operating systems. It is based on the Qt graphical toolkit and the Fluxbox window manager, and uses a small number of X utilities for various tasks, such as numlockx and xscreensaver.
Lumina’s features include:

Very little system overhead.
Intelligent “favorites” system for creating quick shortcuts to applications, files, and directories.
ZFS file restore functionality through the “Insight” file manager.
Desktop system is plugin-based, which is similar to Android or other modern operating systems.
Simple access to operating system-specific functionality such as screen brightness, audio volume, and battery status.

System Dashboard

The “System Dashboard” button is located at the far right of the panel.

This button provides quick access to hardware-specific information or operations, as supported by your operating system. The possible menu entries are:

A slider for changing the audio volume for the system from 0% to 100%. If the operating system provides a mixer utility, an icon will also appear. Click the icon to launch that mixer utility for advanced control of the audio system.
A slider for changing the screen brightness from 0% to 100%.
The current status of the battery, if your system has one, and the estimated time remaining if that battery is discharging.
A listing of the number of virtual workspaces that are in use, with buttons to switch between the different workspaces.
The log out button for ending the desktop session. When the log out button is clicked, a window of choices will be displayed in the middle of the screen. The choices include: Log Out, Restart (if the user has permission), Shutdown (if the user has permission), Cancel (to exit the choice menu), and Lock Screen.

Right-Click Menu

If the user right-clicks on the desktop, a menu of quick shortcuts will appear for instant access and the title of the menu will indicate the name of the workspace. While this menu can be customized, here is a quick summary of the default items on the menu.

Terminal: used to launch a system terminal. The default is xterm, but this can be customized.
Browse System: launches the file manager. The default file manager, Insight, recommended, but this can be customized.
Applications: provides a drop-down menu of all the applications registered on the system, organized by category and name. Click an application to launch it. There are also a few shortcuts at the top of the application menu: one for opening the user’s home directory, one for launching the control panel, if the operating system provides one, and one for launching the graphical application installer, if the operating system provides one.
Desktop Settings: contains shortcuts to configuration utilities for the Lumina desktop environment, such as the control panel, if provided by the operating system, the screensaver configuration utility, the desktop configuration utility (lumina-config), and the Qt configuration utility (if installed).
Unlock/Lock Desktop: used to lock or unlock the desktop plugins. When unlocked, desktop plugins become “active” and can be moved, resized, or removed from the desktop. It is recommended to leave the desktop locked during normal operations.
Snap Plugins to Grid: this option only appears when the desktop is unlocked. Used to align and resize all the desktop plugins on an invisible 32×32 pixel grid, with special adjustments to align on the bottom and right screen edges if necesssary, in order to provide a uniform appearance.
Log Out: opens the system log out window, with options to shutdown/restart the system (if the user has permission), log out of the desktop session, lock the system, or cancel the log out window.

Lumina Configuration Utility

The Lumina Configuration utility allows the user to configure every aspect of the desktop and is the recommended way to make changes. To launch this utility right-click the desktop and select “Desktop Settings” → “Desktop” or type lumina-config from an xterm.

Insight File Manager

The Insight file manager allows the user to easily browse and modify files on the local system on a per-directory basis. To open Insight, right-click the desktop and select “Browse System” or type lumina-fm from an xterm.

It is possible to open up additional directories through the tab system (use “Ctrl-T” or click “File” → “New Tab”), allowing the user to easily manage multiple locations on the system. Insight also features the ability to “bookmark” locations on the system for instant access via the “star” button. Once a location has been bookmarked, it will be available via the “Bookmarks” menu at the top of the window. Any removable devices that are available on the system will show up in the “External Devices” menu, if supported by the operating system. When an item is selected, the options on the left side of the screen will show the possible actions that may be taken with regards to that item. Possible actions include: open, open with (will prompt for the application to use), add to favorites, rename, cut, copy, paste, and delete. By default, the actions buttons are visible. They can be made invisible by clicking “View” → “Show Action Buttons”.

A few additional options may be available at the bottom of the window, depending on the directory being viewed and the types of files that are in it:

New Dir: the ability to create a new directory will become available if the user has permission to modify the contents of the current directory.
Slideshow: if there are image files in the directory, there is an option to view those image files as a slideshow.
Play: will appear if there are supported multimedia files in the directory. The types of files that are supported depends on what multimedia plugins are installed on the system. If a particular file is not recognized as a multimedia file, install the associated multimedia codec using the operating system’s application management software and restart the file manager.
Backups: if the system is formatted with ZFS and snapshots of the current directory are available, this button will appear. Snapshots are organized from oldest to newest, with the most recent snapshot selected by default, and the contents of the directory at the time of that snapshot are displayed. To restore a file or multiple files, select them from the list and click the “Restore Selection” button. If those files still exist and you want to overwrite them, make sure the “Overwrite Existing Files” option is checked first. Otherwise, if a file with that name exists, the restore will append a number to the end of the filename. For example, the first restored version of testfile.txt will become testfile-1.txt.

Canonical Confirms Involvement in Ubuntu Linux Tablet

According to emails from Andrew Bernstein, who has emerged as the public face of the UT One tablet project, Canonical “certainly will be involved” in the production of the tablet, which will feature an Intel x86 processor.

The UT One runs Ubuntu Touch on a quad-core, Intel Atom Z3735D system-on-chip of the tablet-focused, 22nm Bay Trail-T generation, according to the Phoronix-reproduced UT One spec sheet.
The tablet’s SoC is said to run at 1.33GHz to 1.5GHz, and it’s accompanied by 2GB of DDR3L RAM, 16GB of storage, and a microSD slot.
The UT One’s 10.1-inch, IPS touchscreen is said to feature 1280 x 800-pixel resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The screen has 10-point capacitive touch with automatic calibration.
The 254 x 170 x 10mm, 636-gram tablet is further equipped with front- and rear-mounted 2-megapixel cameras, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and support for EVDO/WCDMA 3G cellular via a USB dongle, says Phoronix.
The tablet also offers a mini-HDMI port, a “USB 2.1″ port, a pair of speakers, and an audio jack. The 7900mAh battery is said to last up to eight hours and can be recharged via a DC port.

Not that it would be easy to ditch systemd. But there’s a lot of FUD
going around here about sysvinit support rotting because systemd is the
default, while the fact is that Debian fFreeBSD doesn’t have systemd at
all, and all the init scripts will be kept working for that reason if
nothing else. Also, the tech committe decision was that Debian continues
to support multiple inits to the best of our ability[2]. And, the init
scripts are a relatively miniscule portion of the code in Debian, and
don’t tend to bit rot much anyway[4].

So most of our concern about being locked into systemd is that desktop
environments are coming to require it, and that systemd-shim may be hard
to keep working in the long term. But desktop environments like Gnome
were already requiring systemd before Debian switched to it; Debian
cannot hold back the tide.

ownCloud Client 1.7.0 – A big update

ownCloud Client 1.7.0 is a big release. First and foremost, it supports
new features of ownCloud 7, for example the new sharing. ownCloud Client
1.7.0 now comes with overlay icons in the most popular file managers on
the supported platforms. The icons visualize the sync- and sharing state
of synced files on the desktop.

The second great new feature of ownCloud Client 1.7.0 is selective sync.
Within a sync folder, subtrees can be excluded from sync to the client.
That makes syncing of huge data sets easier to customize.

Apart from these two lighthouse improvements this version also brings a
significant amount of bigger and smaller improvements that make syncing
with ownCloud faster, more reliable and more enjoyable.

BBC News – FBI boss ‘concerned’ by smartphone encryption plans

“I’d hate to have people look at me and say, ‘Well how come you can’t save this kid?’ ‘How come you can’t do this thing?'” said Mr Comey in a briefing.

His comments came in reaction to a decision by Apple to enable a file encryption system on its iOS 8 software for which it has no keys. This means it would not be able to comply with any official request to help police get at the data on those devices.

Mr Comey said he was “very concerned” about these plans because of what they would allow people to do.

“What concerns me about this is companies marketing something expressly to allow people to place themselves beyond the law,” he said.

“I am a huge believer in the rule of law, but I am also a believer that no-one in this country is beyond the law,” he added.

Apple and Google have yet to respond to Mr Comey’s comments.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt: Competition Between Apple and Google is More Brutal Than Ever – Mac Rumors

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt and former SVP of products, Jonathan Rosenberg, recently published a new book entitled “How Google Works, which explores topics like corporate culture, strategy, talent, innovation, dealing with disruption, and more. The duo have done an interview with Bloomberg to promote the title, with Schmidt commenting on the state of affairs between iOS and Google and Apple’s new larger-screened iPhones.

According to Schmidt, competition between Apple and Google is more brutal than ever before, with “enormous, enormous racing” going on between the two companies, which ultimately has “enormous benefits for consumers worldwide.”

Lenovo set to complete acquisition of IBM x86 server business

Lenovo has announced that it will be closing the acquisition deal of IBM’s x86 server business on October 1. The closing purchase price is lower than the $2.3 billion announced in January because of a change in the valuation of inventory and deferred revenue liability, Lenovo said. Roughly $1.8 billion will be paid in cash and the remainder in stock. Lenovo says it had “big plans” for the enterprise market. “We will compete vigorously across every sector, using our manufacturing scale, and operational excellence to repeat the success we have had with PCs,” the company added.

Ubuntu Touch For Phones Hits RTM, First Phones Coming This Year

In early 2013, Canonical showed the world Ubuntu Touch, a version of Ubuntu developed specifically for smartphones. Now, the mobile operating system has finally reached “release to manufacturing” status. (Here’s the release announcement.) The first phone running Ubuntu Touch, the Meizu MX4, will start shipping in December. “Details are scarce on its hardware, but a leak from iGeek suggests the Pro variant may have a Samsung Exynos 5430 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 2560×1536 resolution screen. … This more powerful hardware is good news if true, and it bodes well for Ubuntu’s vision of computing convergence.” Softpedia has a preview of the RTM version of the OS. They say performance has improved significantly, even on old phones, and that the UI has been polished into a much better state.

These are the officially supported devices, but Android-x86 should work on others too. An old list of supported devices / hardware can be found HERE.

Android-x86 4.0 has been tested / it should work on MSI 110W, Asus EeePC or some Asus laptops/tablets and Tegav2.

Download UNetbootin to flash the ISO image to a thumb drive. Or you can burn the ISO image to a CDROM.
Boot and enjoy! If you like it, reboot and select the install option.

A couple Android-x86 4.0 (ICS) tips:

*When using it in VirtualBox, make sure you select \”Disable Mouse Integration\”
*Disable screen autorotate from the Android-x86 settings, or else some application might rotate it for you (and that\’s quite annoying if your device doesn\’t support it)
