Windows 10 to make the Secure Boot alt-OS lock out a reality

Should this stand, we can envisage OEMs building machines that will offer no easy way to boot self-built operating systems, or indeed, any operating system that doesn’t have appropriate digital signatures. This doesn’t cut out Linux entirely—there have been some collaborations to provide Linux boot software with the “right” set of signatures, and these should continue to work—but it will make it a lot less easy.

The BQ Aquaris Ubuntu Phone’s Kernel Appears To Be A Toxic Mess

Carsten Munk of the Mer Project and Chief Research Engineer of Jolla has raised some concerns about the Linux kernel used by the BQ Aquaris E4.5 smart-phone running Ubuntu Touch. The kernel appears to have module source-code marked as confidential and other markings that would not comply with the GPLv2 license of the Linux kernel.

In a blog post out today, the Linux Android-based kernel used by Ubuntu on their first smart-phone is difficult to find the official source tree. When finding a kernel source tree for the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition Phone, Carsten was greeted by many “confidential and proprietary” statements from MediaTek, the company whose SoC is powering the phone. In other modules are confidential and proprietary licenses from other vendors too.

Hi all,

Some of you might have seen today’s blog post from Carsten Munk, from the
Mer project, where he pointed to conflicting comments in the kernel sources
of the Ubuntu phone for bq devices.

We are working with bq to understand the situation and planning to publish
the final E4.5 Ubuntu edition sources next week. We are confident that
these will address any questions raised by the preview source tree.

Thanks to everyone who expressed their concerns and your patience as we
resolve this.

Cheers,
David.

When asked for source code, MediaTek asks for money. They literally charge a Licensing Fee to device manufacturers for Linux Kernel source code.

CRUX Linux Review:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

About: Crux

CRUX is a lightweight Linux distribution for the x86-64 architecture targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is keep it simple, which is reflected in a straightforward tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization of new Linux features and recent tools and libraries. CRUX also has a ports system which makes it easy to install and upgrade applications.

In short, CRUX might suit you very well if you are:

  • A somewhat experienced Linux user who wants a clean and solid Linux distribution as the foundation of your installation.
  • A person who prefers editing configuration files with an editor to using a GUI.
  • Someone who does not hesitate to download and compile programs from the source.

History of CRUX

  • Started May 2000
  • No public releases made during this time
  • A strong community by 2002, and was responsible for working together and adding important package management features to the distro.
  • CRUX was built from scratch and has never been based on any other Linux distribution.

  • Tracked by Distrowatch since 2002-01-14

CRUX vs Arch

  • Before creating Arch, Judd Vinet admired and used CRUX; a minimalist distribution created by Per Lidén. Originally inspired by ideas in common with CRUX and BSD, Arch was built from scratch, and pacman was then coded in C.
  • Arch and CRUX share some guiding principles: for instance, both are architecture-optimized, minimalist and K.I.S.S.-oriented.
  • Both ship with ports-like systems, and, like *BSD, both provide a minimal base environment to build upon.
  • Arch features pacman, which handles binary system package management and works seamlessly with the Arch Build System. CRUX uses a community contributed system called prt-get, which, in combination with its own ports system, handles dependency resolution, but builds all packages from source (though the CRUX base installation is binary).
  • Arch officially supports x86_64 and i686 only, whereas CRUX officially offers only x86_64.
  • Arch uses a rolling-release system and features a large array of binary package repositories as well as the Arch User Repository. CRUX provides a more slimmed-down officially supported ports system in addition to a comparatively modest community repository.

CRUX 3.1 Released July 17th 2014

Toolchain updates

CRUX 3.1 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.19.0, gcc 4.8.3 and binutils 2.24

Kernel

Linux 3.12.24

Xorg

CRUX 3.1 ships with Xorg 7.7 and xorg-server 1.15.1.

CRUX Install:

  • Very Manual.

Packages in CRUX

The package system (pkgutils) is made with simplicity in mind, where all packages are plain tar.gz files (i.e. without any kind of meta data).

When a package is installed using pkgadd a new record is added to the package database (stored in /var/lib/pkg/db). The basic package system does not have any kind of dependency checking, thus it will not warn you if you install a package that requires other packages to be installed. The included prt-get tool, however, does support dependencies.

Since the package file itself does not contain any meta data. Instead, the package manager uses the package filename to determine the package name and version.
Thus, when installing a package file named bash#2.05-1.pkg.tar.gz, the package manager will interpret this as a package named bash at version 2.05-1.

If pkgadd is unable to interpret the filename (e.g. # is missing or the filename does not end with .pkg.tar.gz) an error message will be printed and pkgadd will abort without installing the package.

Package management frontend: prt-get

To address the different requirements towards package management in CRUX, a number of users started discussion about an advanced package management frontend to pkgutils, with dependency handling and support for large install transactions. The result of this community effort is prt-get, a tool which provides a number of features on top of pkgutils while keeping pkgutils’ original character and power. Its main features are

  • Dependency handling
  • Build logging
  • Powerful search and query functionality

Nowadays prt-get is an official project and tool of the CRUX project.

The Ports System

The term Ports System refers to a remote repository containing ports and a client program capable of downloading ports from that repository. CRUX users use the ports(8) utility to download ports from the repository and place them in /usr/ports/. The ports utility uses rsync(1) or httpup(1) to do the actual downloading/synchronization.

A port is a directory containing the files needed for building a package using pkgmk. This means that this directory at least has the files Pkgfile (which is the package build description) and .footprint (which is used for regression testing and contains a list of files this package is expected to contain once it is built). Further, a port directory can contain patches and/or other files needed for building the package. It is important to understand that the actual source code for the package is not necessarily present in port directory. Instead the Pkgfile contains an URL which points to a location where the source can be downloaded.

OpenSUSE Factory Turns Into Rolling Release Distribution

OpenSUSE Factory will still serve where openSUSE development takes place, but it’s also going to aim for being a distribution on its own as a “tested and stable fresh-daily bleeding-edge distribution.”

Fedora security team is announced

== What are we doing? ==

The Security Team’s mission is to assist packagers in closing security vulnerabilities. Once alerted to a
vulnerability on a package, the security team can help work with upstream to obtain a patch or a new release
of a package. Once we have a patch or a new release we attach it to the vulnerability bug and work with
packagers to get the fix pushed.

== How bad is the problem now? ==

As of a few days ago we had 566 open vulnerability tickets that cover both Fedora and EPEL. The breakdown of
those bugs by severity looks like this:

Fedora 21 Has Been Delayed By Three Weeks

At Wednesday’s Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee it was agreed upon to push back the entire release process by three weeks. This three weeks is to give additional time to finish outstanding work prior to the changes freeze and for also then working around Fedora’s “Flock” contributor conference.

Fedora 21 will not be officially released now until at least 4 November while the alpha release is at 26 August, beta release on 30 September, and the final change deadline on 21 October. The updated Fedora 21 schedule can be found via this Fedora Wiki page.

OMG! Fedora is just getting a security team? Does this mean Fedora has been insecure this entire time?!?

Umm, no, it doesn’t mean that Fedora has been insecure this entire time. In all actuality Fedora is in pretty good shape overall. There is always room for improvement and so we’re organizing a team to help facilitate that improvement.

XBMC Is Getting a New Name – Introducing Kodi 14

OwnCLoud7

ownCloud 7 Community Edition has significant feature improvements for users, administrators and developers.

Questions for Frank:
  • What brought about Server-to-Server syncing, and how close to real time is that syncing?

  • Sleepee asks: Any plans for better auditing on who shared filed. He’s working in an Enterprise, and the management would like some records.

  • Seal20 asks: I could not find anyway to replace the last closed and evil tool: evernote. I hate it but I couldn’t switch to any other free alternative. Do you plan do include an evernote alternative somewhere down the road?

  • Seal20 also asks: What about an “owncloud phone” you could rip off an android os from all google or even better start from a firefox os and include all owncloud related apps: cal/carddav sync, owncloud news, sync apps, etc! I and i am sure others will surely pay a premium for this!

  • pierre4l asks: I wonder whether the focus of OwnCloud is going to be home users wanting to set up their personal cloud servers, or whether it is veering more to the enterprise deployments. Or is it trying to be a solution for all?

  • OwnCloud apps seems to be really growing. Where do you see OwnCloud apps going? Even casual games on apps.ownCloud.com

  • autodidactos: I know there are two email client apps available (roundcube and rainloop) but neither seem to be as integrated as an official client would be. Are there any plans for an official OwnCloud email client?

New Unreal Tournament Game Will Be Available For Linux, Free

It also goes to show how they also believe in Linux to release their engine and new flagship game on Linux.

Speaking on cost they said it themselves that it will be free. It\’s not \”free 2 play\”, it\’s just 100% free (and no I don\’t mean open-source). That\’s absolutely crazy to have a game as high calibre as Unreal Tournament being free.

From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We\’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.

Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.

GNOME Wayland Is Approved For Fedora 21

The Wayland change for Fedora 21 is about better supporting GNOME Wayland sessions. Fedora 20 already brought experimental GNOME Shell Wayland support while Fedora 21 is building upon more polished support thanks to upstream improvements landing with GNOME 3.14 due out in September.

It\’s not for sure yet that a Wayland-based environment would replace the X.Org Server by default for Fedora 21, but at least the support will be in good standing.

In time for Fedora 21 will also be X.Org Server 1.16 which integrates basic XWayland support for running X11 applications atop Wayland without requiring separate X.Org patches.

Sabayon Linux Review

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Sabayon Linux or Sabayon (formerly RR4 Linux and RR64 Linux), is a Gentoo-based Linux distribution. Sabayon follows the “out of the box” philosophy, aiming to give the user a wide number of applications ready to use and a self-configured operating system.

Sabayon Linux features a rolling release cycle, its own software repository and a package management system called Entropy. Sabayon is available in both x86 and AMD64 distributions and there is support for ARMv7 in development for the BeagleBone.

  • The installer feels a bit dated.

  • Uses systemd not OpenRC

  • Does not assume a tone of big and corporate. Dialogs are clear, and honest. Even a little fun.

  • Install and Download Process feels dates, download is not user friendly.

Barking and Dagenham Council swaps XP desktops for Chromebooks

Barking and Dagenham London Borough Council has switched to Google Chromebooks to migrate from Windows XP, which Microsoft will no longer support after 8 April.

The council is working with Google enterprise partner, Ancoris, and its joint venture outsourcing provider, Elevate East London, to roll out 1,500 Chromebooks and 500 Chromeboxes.

Ubuntu One falls from the clouds

But as of June 1st, 2014, syncing will stop. On July 31st, 2014, all data will be wiped. Ubuntu One will be no more.

“As of today, it will no longer be possible to purchase storage or music from the Ubuntu One store,” Canonical CEO Jane Silber wrote. “The Ubuntu One file services will not be included in the upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 LTS release, and the Ubuntu One apps in older versions of Ubuntu and in the Ubuntu, Google, and Apple stores will be updated appropriately. The current services will be unavailable from 1 June 2014; user content will remain available for download until 31 July, at which time it will be deleted.”

“Additionally, the free storage wars aren’t a sustainable place for us to be, particularly with other services now regularly offering 25GB–50GB free storage,” Silber wrote. “If we offer a service, we want it to compete on a global scale, and for Ubuntu One to continue to do that would require more investment than we are willing to make.”

The shutdown will not affect the Ubuntu One single sign on service, the Ubuntu One payment service, or the backend U1DB database service.

Mail Sack:

Question for next week:

  • Does groupthink / management by consensus tamper open source innovation. Does backlash to aggressive and sometimes new or “risky” ideas inhibit bold invitations?

  • Example: Debian can’t get off the pot about their init. Choosing systemd would impact 0.8% of their user base negatively (according to voluntary stats) and be beneficial for Linux as a whole not just Debian. Yet they can’t make the call.

The Open Google Docs Replacement:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Up front: This is really focused on Google Docs’ collaborative features. As I have found these to be particularly a powerful competitive advantage of Google Docs. If you haven’t tried it, try it during your next meeting, or brainstorming session, or maybe just grocery shop list making from separate rooms. TRY IT!

First launched in November 2008, the software was acquired by Google in December 2009 and released as open source later that month. Several services now use the Etherpad software, including PiratePad, Telecomix Pad, Framapad, Mozilla Pad (MoPad), PrimaryPad, TypeWith.me, Sync.in, TitanPad and iEtherPad.com. Further development is coordinated by the Etherpad Foundation.

Etherpad Lite is an almost complete rewrite of the original Etherpad software, based on different technical foundations and written by different authors. While the original Etherpad is written in Scala and has quite big system requirements, Etherpad Lite is written in server-side JavaScript using node.js. The original realtime synchronization library (called Easysync) remains the same.

Apache License version 2.0 on December 17, 2009.

Prerequisites:

  • NodeJS
  • npm
  • Uncomment and change admin pw in settings.json

Sabayon 9 Review:

More and more of the folks we consider trend setters in our audience have begun singing the praises of Sabayon

Install:
  • The installer has a lot of powerful options, though the UI is not awesome.
  • The install process seems fairly easy, you’d never realize this was Gentoo.
General use:
  • Login screen is sliiiick
  • Update manager is really cool, showing the icon, name, and description of each package being updated.
  • Rigo Application Browser is simple, but exposes solid nerd features.
    • Rigo shows helpful warnings from the repo
  • Entropy is the package manager.
  • equo is the command line package manager that uses binaries. You can also use emerge, but keep them in sync.
  • Picking great default apps is BACK!
    • Chrome
    • Clementine
    • VLC for Media Playback
    • Great KDE Menu organization
    • God Dammit I love the terminal defaults
  • ZFS on Gentoo/Sabayon

Matt’s Howto:

Presented by: System76

1) Install Teeworlds. This is easy to do, just install it from the software center or via apt-get.

2) Use Audacity to take an existing MP3 and convert it into a wav file, via the ‘export to’ option. You will name the new wav file music_menu.wav as this is the file we’ll be working with.

3) Next, open up a terminal window and paste in the following:
sudo apt-get install wavpack

4) Assuming your wav file is saved to your Desktop, use the following comanand to convert the wav file into a wv file, so it works with the game.

cd Desktop

(In a single line in the terminal, space between -o and /home)
wavpack /home/$USER/Desktop/music_menu.wav -o /home/$USER/Desktop/music_menu.wv

5) With the new wv file created, you can now move the file into the appropriate directory.

sudo mv music_menu.wv /usr/share/games/teeworlds/data/audio/music_menu.wv

6) After closing the terminal, start the Teeworlds game and the music you hear, should be the same as the mp3 you converted into a wav, and then into a wv file.

Heads up — I’ve read you can export to wv from Audacity, however I’ve had no luck with it personally — so try this approach instead.

FreeBSD 9 Review:
  • UFS Softupdate Journaling
  • The FreeBSD Fast File System now supports softupdates journaling. It introduces a intent log into a softupdates-enabled file system which eliminates the need for background fsck(8) even on unclean shutdown
  • This new feature means that a fsck after an unexpected reboot is no longer required. In modern FreeBSD only a basic preen was required, and then a full fsck would take place on a snapshot of the file system, in the background after the system had finished rebooting. With the new softupdate journaling (basically an intent log), a full fsck is no longer required at all
  • Journaling support is enabled by default on all newly created file systems, and can be enabled on existing UFS2 partitions using tunefs(8)
  • Full TRIM support for SSDs
  • The FreeBSD Fast File System now supports the TRIM command when freeing data blocks. The TRIM-enable flag makes the file system send a delete request to the underlying device for each freed block
  • TRIM support can also be enabled during newfs(8) or on an existing file system with tunefs(8)
  • ZFS Upgraded to v28
  • ZFS v28 introduces support for data deduplication, triple parity RAIDZ (raidz3), snapshot holds, log device removal, zfs diff, zpool split, zpool import -F, and read-only zpool import
  • The zpool(8): utility now supports a zpool labelclear command. This allows to wipe the label data from a drive that is not active in a pool
  • HAST Improvements
  • The Highly Available Storage daemon now supports data checksumming (crc32 or sha256) and compression (zero hole or lzf) and improved security
  • Introduction of the GEOM RAID class graid(8)
  • Which supports:
    • RAID0
    • RAID1
    • RAID1E
    • RAID10
    • SINGLE
    • CONCAT
  • It also supports the on disk formats for:
    • Intel RAID BIOS
    • JMicron RAID BIOS
    • NVIDIA MediaShield RAID BIOS
    • Promise and AMD/ATI RAID BIOS
    • SiliconImage RAID BIOS
  • Additionally, geom_map(4) allows specific areas of a device to be mapped as separate devices, especially useful for embedded flash storage
  • GEOM also support the following classes: CACHE, ELI, JOURNAL, LABEL, MIRROR, MOUNTVER, MULTIPATH, NOP, PART, RAID3, SCHED, SHSEC, STRIPE and VIRSTOR
  • NFSv4 with ACLs
  • In addition to NFSv2 and v3,
  • New utmpx(3) user accounting system
  • 5 new TCP congestion control schems
  • The FreeBSD TCP/IP network stack now supports the mod_cc(9) pluggable congestion control framework. This allows TCP congestion control algorithms to be implemented as dynamically loadable kernel modules
  • The following kernel modules are available as of 9.0-RELEASE: cc_chd(4) for the CAIA-Hamilton-Delay algorithm, cc_cubic(4) for the CUBIC algorithm, cc_hd(4) for the Hamilton-Delay algorithm, cc_htcp(4) for the H-TCP algorithm, cc_newreno(4) for the NewReno algorithm, and cc_vegas(4) for the Vegas algorithm.
  • An h_ertt(4) (Enhanced Round Trip Time) module has been added, which allows per-connection, low noise estimates of the instantaneous RTT in the TCP/IP network stack.
  • New CAM based disk subsystem
  • The ATA/SATA disk subsystem has been replaced with a new cam(4)-based implementation. cam(4) stands for Common Access Method, which is an implementation of an API set originally for SCSI–2 and standardized as “SCSI–2 Common Access Method Transport and SCSI Interface Module”
  • The ada(4) driver now supports per-device write cache control. New sysctl(8) variables kern.cam.ada.write_cache and kern.cam.ada.N.write_cache settings of 1 enables and 0 disables the write cache, and –1 leaves the device default behavior. sysctl(8) variables can override the configuration in a per-device basis (the default value is –1, which means to use the global setting)
  • New Resource Accounting and Limiting APIs
  • RACCT is a new resource accounting API has been implemented. It can keep per-process, per-jail, and per-loginclass resource accounting information
  • The new resource-limiting API RCTL works in conjunction with the RACCT resource accounting implementation and takes user-configurable actions based on the set of rules it maintains and the current resource usage
  • Full USB3 support
  • OpenSSH upgraded to 5.8p2 with HPN for faster transfer speeds
  • OpenResolv to manage resolv.conf for multiple interfaces
  • Support for SHA–256 and SHA–512 cryptographic password hashing
  • sh updated
  • new arithmetic expression handling imported from dash (which is originally from NetBSD ash)
  • changes to the way builtin commands relate to PATH env
  • fixed various other bugs
  • Capsicum Capability Mode
  • New Sandboxing and compartmentalization framework from Cambridge University
  • Improved privilege separation in OpenSSH and DHClient
  • Replacement of various GPL tools and utilities with BSD licensed ones to avoid GPLv3
  • libreadline
  • grep
  • llvm/clang imported, will eventually replace gcc 4.2 (last GPL v2)
  • compiler-rt replaced libgcc

If you are using an older version of FreeBSD, the FreeBSD-Update tool can do a quick in-place upgrade using bsdiff binary patching.

As always, instructions for installing the OS and Packages, securing and managing your system can be found in the FreeBSD Handbook
