Lizard Squad’s Xbox Live, PSN attacks were a ‘marketing scheme’ for new DDoS service

The service, dubbed Lizard Stresser, launched early Tuesday morning via Twitter (redacted below) and is fully operational, a Lizard Squad member who goes by the alias “dragon” told the Daily Dot via a direct message on Twitter and subsequent conversation through the instant messaging service Jabber. Customers can use the service against any target they wish, including large websites or Internet services, such as PSN or Xbox Live. Dragon, who is listed as co-owner of the service, says the launch of Lizard Stresser will be the group’s last move before they “vanish off back to the caves where we came from.”

Once customers log into Lizard Squad’s new service, they are greeted by a list of the group’s accomplishments:

The cost of attacks range anywhere from $6 to $500, paid for with Bitcoin, the difficult-to-trace cryptocurrency. The most expensive tier offers 30,000 seconds of attack (a little more than 20 days), and costs just $130 per month. For $500, customers can launch unlimited attacks.

With the notoriety achieved from their attacks on Xbox Live and Playstation Network, Lizard Squad plans to utilize their huge social media reach to attract potential customers.

NSA has VPNs in Vulcan death grip—no, really, that’s what they call it

The National Security Agency’s Office of Target Pursuit (OTP) maintains a team of engineers dedicated to cracking the encrypted traffic of virtual private networks (VPNs) and has developed tools that could potentially uncloak the traffic in the majority of VPNs used to secure traffic passing over the Internet today, according to documents published this week by the German news magazine Der Speigel. A slide deck from a presentation by a member of OTP’s VPN Exploitation Team, dated September 13, 2010, details the process the NSA used at that time to attack VPNs—including tools with names drawn from Star Trek and other bits of popular culture.

When an IPSec VPN is identified and “tasked” by NSA analysts, according to the presentation, a “full take” of its traffic is stored in VULCANDEATHGRIP, a VPN data repository. There are similar, separate repositories for PPTP and SSL VPN traffic dubbed FOURSCORE and VULCANMINDMELD, respectively.

The NSA has a specific repository for capturing VPN metadata called TOYGRIPPE. The repository stores information on VPN sessions between systems of interest, including their “fingerprints” for specific machines and which VPN services they’ve connected to, their key exchanges, and other connection data. VPN “fingerprints” can also be extracted from XKEYSCORE, the NSA’s distributed “big data” store of all recently captured Internet traffic, to be used in identifying targets and developing an attack.

Newly published NSA documents show agency could grab all Skype traffic

The nature of the Skype data collection was spelled out in an NSA document dated August 2012 entitled “User’s Guide for PRISM Skype Collection.” The document details how to “task” the capture of voice communications from Skype by NSA’s NUCLEON system, which allows for text searches against captured voice communications. It also discusses how to find text chat and other data sent between clients in NSA’s PINWALE “digital network intelligence” database.

The full capture of voice traffic began in February of 2011 for “Skype in” and “Skype out” calls—calls between a Skype user and a land line or cellphone through a gateway to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), captured through warranted taps into Microsoft’s gateways. But in July of 2011, the NSA added the capability of capturing peer-to-peer Skype communications—meaning that the NSA gained the ability to capture peer-to-peer traffic and decrypt it using keys provided by Microsoft through the PRISM warrant request.

Microsoft buys Mojang, Minecraft: Five reasons it makes strategic sense | ZDNet

Microsoft on Monday confirmed the $2.5 billion acquisition. The company said that the company will be break even on earnings in fiscal 2015. Mojang will join Microsoft Studios.

Here’s why the deal, which will be panned by some, makes strategic sense.

  1. Mojang gives Microsoft an asset and community that could cultivate a younger demographic. If you’ve ever seen an elementary school kid go into a Minecraft coma you know the power that Mojang has. To younger customers, Microsoft’s core brand is really Xbox. If Microsoft is going to have an installed base to up sell as these customers move to smartphones to tablets to PCs to enterprise applications and cloud Minecraft is a good place to start.

  2. The future of Microsoft revolves around mobile and cross-platform applications. Office is about iOS and Android as much as it is Windows Phone and Windows. Microsoft’s enterprise applications may have some perks for Windows, but also need to play across all mobile platforms. Skype is cross platform too. Minecraft gives Microsoft a property that plays well on the desktop, iOS and Android. And since Minecraft will be owned by Microsoft at least there will be a Windows Phone version too.

  3. Minecraft could be the next Lego-like franchise. It won’t be hard to find a group of people that’ll say that Minecraft has peaked and Microsoft is paying too much for a declining asset. However, Minecraft could be the digital equivalent of Legos, which spark the imagination and have become an introductory course to robotics and engineering.

  4. Mojang would make an Xbox spin-off more feasible should Microsoft go that route. Yes, we know that Microsoft has noted that it is keeping Xbox, but Minecraft would give the gaming unit another key title to go along with games like Halo. The addition of Mojang makes Xbox stronger whether Microsoft decides to keep the unit or spin it off to focus on the enterprise and cloud.

  5. Microsoft gets to use its overseas cash pile. Based on current tax laws, Microsoft’s overseas cash can’t be brought back into the U.S. without a hefty hit. As a result, U.S. companies are increasingly buying international assets. Microsoft’s purchase of Mojang is its fourth international company acquisition in 2014. Most of the acquisitions were of the plug-in variety to add features and or services to existing product lines.

According to the Bloomberg story, Xbox chief Phil Spencer has been wooing Persson in person, flying out to have dinners with the Mojang founder. According to one source, Microsoft thinks that it can expand Minecraft’s reach in both the game and licensed property. A Minecraft movie is currently in the works, and Mojang has already licensed books, toys and a plethora of other merchandise.

The software company’s Windows Phone system has only 2.5 percent of the world’s smartphone market, and its Surface tablet barely more, according to tech research firm IDC. Growth is hampered because many app and game developers ignore it.

It seems like Microsoft is looking at Mojang and Minecraft as a way to tap into this enormous cultural phenomenon,” said Dave Bisceglia, Chief Executive of independent game studio Tap Lab. “If you look at iOS, Minecraft has been a top-grossing game for quite some time, if Microsoft could on Windows phones give players a unique and compelling experience that you can’t get on the other platforms, that could be a driver to sell devices to existing Minecraft fans.”

Snowden Documents Indicate NSA Has Breached Deutsche Telekom – SPIEGEL ONLINE

A program called Treasure Map even has its own logo, a skull superimposed onto a compass, the eye holes glowing in demonic red, reminiscent of a movie poster for the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, starring Johnny Depp.

Treasure Map is anything but harmless entertainment. Rather, it is the mandate for a massive raid on the digital world. It aims to map the Internet, and not just the large traffic channels, such as telecommunications cables. It also seeks to identify the devices across which our data flows, so-called routers.

Furthermore, every single end device that is connected to the Internet somewhere in the world — every smartphone, tablet and computer — is to be made visible. Such a map doesn’t just reveal one treasure. There are millions of them.

The breathtaking mission is described in a Treasure Map presentation from the documents of the former intelligence service employee Edward Snowden which SPIEGEL has seen. It instructs analysts to “map the entire Internet — Any device, anywhere, all the time.”

Android One smartphones released in India by three companies

The handsets provide a minimum set of features determined by Google, which has sourced several of the components to help cut manufacturing costs.

The company has also teamed up with a local network to make it cheaper to download Android updates and new apps.

The first Android One devices are made by Micromax – already India’s bestselling mobile-phone maker – Karbonn and Spice.

To meet Google’s minimum standards they all have:

  • a 4.5in (11.4cm) display
  • 1GB of RAM (random-access memory)
  • a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front one
  • a quadcore processor sourced from Taiwanese company Mediatek
  • the ability to run the next version of Android, due for release soon

In addition, they have been tailored to suit the local market by including a micro-SD (Secure Digital) slot, a replaceable battery, a built-in FM radio and the ability to support two Sim cards simultaneously.

The first batch of phones could be offered for as low as 6,399 rupees ($105; £65) if bought contract-free.

About 400 million smartphones will be sold in India over the next five years, according to a forecast by PricewaterhouseCoopers, with the majority bought at Android One’s price point.

Internet Slowdown Day warns what may be to come – CNN.com

Etsy, Foursquare, Kickstarter, Reddit and others will alter their websitest, and will be displaying a constant “loading” symbol — the so-called “loading pinwheel” or, alternately, theSpinning Wheel of Death.

It’s part of a protest called “Internet Slowdown Day,” a push against the U.S. government’s support for so-called Internet fast lanes.

As part of the Internet Slowdown Day protest, the websites will also include a prompt to contact your lawmakers about the FCC proposal.

Large US tech firms plan ‘go slow’ day in protest over net neutrality rules | Technology | theguardian.com

“Net neutrality is tough to explain to people, so we wanted to organize an action that actually shows the world what’s at stake. I think the three most hated words on the internet right now are ‘Please wait, loading … ‘ Unless internet users unite in defense of net neutrality, we could be seeing those dreaded ‘loading’ wheels a lot more often on some of our favorite websites, while monopolistic companies get to decide which content gets seen by the most people.”

Several other large internet companies are expected to back the day of action, which is being coordinated by Silicon Valley lobby group Engine. Engine will direct people to call or email policymakers with their concerns.

Cable companies want to slow down (and break!) your favorite sites, for profit. To fight back, let’s cover the web with symbolic “loading” icons, to remind everyone what an Internet without net neutrality would look like, and drive record numbers of emails and calls to lawmakers.

Microsoft Said Near $2 Billion Deal for Minecraft Maker

Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, is in serious talks with 4-year-old Mojang, said the people, who asked not to be named because the negotiations aren’t public. The deal may be concluded as soon as this week, though next week is more likely, said two people.

Bloomberg reports that the deal is more likely to be wrapped up next week. According to Bloomberg, talks between the companies began when Persson reached out to Microsoft a few months ago to explore the possibility of a sale. Microsoft believes it can make Minecraft more profitable by increasing its user base and doing more licensing agreements for toys and movies, the report said. Perhaps of greatest interest to Minecraft fans is that Persson will stay with Mojang through its transition to Microsoft but plans to leave beyond that, according to Bloomberg.

If a deal is reached, Microsoft plans to pay for an acquisition with cash held overseas, one person familiar with the company said. That would have favorable tax consequences for the software maker, whose vast majority of cash and short-term investments are kept outside the U.S.

EBay Announces First Foray Into Bitcoin With Braintree Unit

On Monday, eBay announced that Braintree, the company’s payment processor subsidiary, would begin accepting the virtual currency in the “coming months.” According to Braintree CEO Bill Ready, who was speaking at San Francisco’s TechCrunch Disrupt conference, the company has partnered with Bitcoin exchange Coinbase in a move to “embrace” the relatively new form of payment.

While users will not yet see Bitcoin integrations in eBay’s marketplace or on PayPal, Braintree’s customers, which include Airbnb and Uber, will eventually be able to start accepting Bitcoin if they desire. Braintree provides payment processing software for companies and was acquired by eBay last year for about $800 million. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Braintree was exploring Bitcoin integrations last month.

The BBC, the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Forbes and several other business sites are buzzing with Paypal’s incorporation of Bitcoin transactions. According to Wired, Paypal will be “the best thing ever to happen to Bitcoin.” Paypal-owned Braintree not only brings 150 million active users in close contact with Bitcoin, it signals “mainstreaming” similar to cell phone app banking, perceived as experimental just a few years ago.

U2, Apple and the Deal Behind Getting ‘Songs of Innocence’ Free of Charge

Along with Apple’s announcement of its latest-model iPhones and its new smartwatch, the company also revealed that it is giving away as many as 500 million copies of the veteran
rock band’s 13th album, “Songs of Innocence,” via the iTunes Store.

“Songs of Innocence” appears automatically on a user’s “purchased” page in the iTunes store, requiring customers to simply click on it to download. As part of its deal with Apple, the band will also benefit from the kind of massive promotional blitz.

Apple didn’t pay a traditional wholesale price for each of the 500 million albums. Instead the company paid Universal and U2 an undisclosed lump sum for the exclusive window to distribute the album. Universal plans to piggyback on the big push for “Songs of Innocence” to promote the band’s 12 older albums, a critical factor for a veteran rock band. The band’s recent albums have shown a steady decline in sales even steeper than the overall industry trend. “No Line on the Horizon,” from 2009, has sold 1.1 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s down from 3.3 million copies for “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,” and 4.4 million copies for “All That You Can’t Leave Behind,” released in 2000.

As part of the deal forged by the band, manager Guy Oseary (hired by U2 last year to replace longtime manager Paul McGuinness) and Universal, Apple also made plans to use the first single from the album, “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone),” as a central element of a global, 30-day television advertising campaign for its new iPhones and Apple Watch. The campaign is believed to be worth around $100 million, according to a person familiar with the talks.

On Oct. 14, the 11-song “Songs of Innocence” will be released (including a deluxe version with four additional tracks) through other physical and online retailers.

Microsoft drops case that severed DNS hosting for millions of No-IP nodes | Ars Technica

Microsoft has formally settled legal differences with No-IP, the dynamic domain name host that was kneecapped by a botnet takedown that recently knocked out service to millions of legitimate hostnames.

Microsoft surrendered the 23 No-IP domains last week. A bare-bones statement e-mailed to journalists Wednesday morning said the agreement settled a controversial lawsuit Microsoft filed in late June that allowed the software maker to confiscate 23 No-IP domain names before the service provider had an opportunity to oppose the maneuver in court. The malware families targeted in the latest takedown infected more than 7.4 million machines in the past year alone, Microsoft said.

Microsoft’s technique relies on stealth to disconnect virtually all of a campaign’s malicious servers at once before the operators have a chance to respond.

Preserving the confidentiality of the planned takedown may have played a role in No-IP claims that Microsoft officials never contacted it ahead of time about the abuse of its service. Microsoft’s takedown technique has evolved over the years. Company officials would do well to update it again to reflect the lessons learned from this episode.

With Google Offer, Cloud Storage Gets Closer to Free

Google Cloud Platform offered two terabytes of free storage for a year, through one of its partners, a startup called Panzura.

By comparison, Amazon offers a service for infrequently accessed data at one cent per gigabyte per month, which would equate to $120 a year for one terabyte of storage. Microsoft’s Azure service offers business the first terabyte of data storage for as little as 2.4 cents a gigabyte per month.

“This is a way for customers to try something new, especially if they have had some kind of aversion to using the cloud in the past,” said Chris Rimer, global head of partners at Google’s Cloud Platform business.

He said Google wants to encourage businesses to move more of their computing to the cloud. “We want to make sure potential customers are not worried about cost as a barrier to entry,” Rimer said.

“There are free offers out there for gigabytes of storage, but terabytes is where it starts to get interesting for companies,” said Rimer.

Google has released a feature for Chromecast announced at Google I/O this year — Android device screen mirroring. The update today brings the much-desired feature to all Chromecast-capable devices and makes Google Cast much more similar to Apple‘s competing AirPlay offering for iOS devices.

Singapore passes law to block illegal sites

Announced back in April, the new amendment to Singapore’s Copyright Act will provide content owners with the ability make Internet service providers in the country block illegal web sites such as the infamous Pirate Bay.

Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Law Indranee Rajah said the new law will give copyright owners “greater ability to protect their rights in the online space.”

“The prevalence of online piracy in Singapore turns customers away from legitimate content and adversely affects Singapore’s creative sector,” Rajah said.

The new law is reportedly set to come into force at the end of August, and copyright owners can apply to the court in Singapore without having to establish the liability of the network service provider.

Judge denies Silk Road’s demands to dismiss criminal prosecution

In a scathing opinion and order on Wednesday, the federal judge presiding over the Silk Road case denied the defense’s motion to dismiss all four criminal counts, rejecting every argument made. Absent a plea deal, the case will now go to trial scheduled for November in a New York federal courtroom.

In her 51-page ruling, Judge Katherine Forrest did not buy any of the defense’s arguments. Among them, Dratel claimed that the money laundering charges must fail because Silk Road’s currency of choice was Bitcoin, which he said is not money.

Bitcoin Foundation Hires Firm to Lobby Congress on Cryptocurrencies

The Bitcoin Foundation has stepped up its US lobbying efforts by hiring Washington, DC-based firm Thorsen French Advocacy.

The announcement from the Foundation represents perhaps the most high-profile bitcoin lobbying effort to date.

The lobbying efforts will seek to find a balance between privacy concerns and law enforcement as it relates to bitcoin; clarify the US government’s stance on digital currency taxation; and develop more inclusive, but effective, consumer protection rules.

Edward Snowden’s Rough Week

Eric Michael O’Neill (born March 3, 1973) is a former American FBI counter-terrorism and counterintelligence operative. He worked and was entitled as an Investigative Specialist with the Special Surveillance Group (SSG) and played a major role in the arrest, conviction, and life imprisonment of FBI agent Robert Hanssen for spying on behalf of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation.

The ABC News doyenne pushed hard to have NSA leaker*Edward Snowden *at the top of her list of 10 most fascinating people of the year — but in the end was overruled by network brass, a source told Confidenti@l.

In addition to Snowden, the others chosen for the much-anticipated special includeJennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West (starring jointly as KimYe), baby Prince George, the cast of “Duck Dynasty,” swimmer Diana Nyad, “Good Morning America” hostRobin Roberts andPope Francis.

The European parliament is lining up Edward Snowden to give evidence by video link this month, in spite of resistance by British Conservatives, a Green MEP has announced.

World of Spycraft

Online games might seem innocuous, a top-secret 2008 NSA document warned, but they had the potential to be a “target-rich communication network” allowing intelligence suspects “a way to hide in plain sight.” Virtual games “are an opportunity!,” another 2008 NSA document declared.

But for all their enthusiasm — so many CIA, FBI and Pentagon spies were hunting around in Second Life, the document noted, that a “deconfliction” group was needed to avoid collisions — the intelligence agencies may have inflated the threat.

The documents do not cite any counterterrorism successes from the effort, and former American intelligence officials, current and former gaming company employees and outside experts said in interviews that they knew of little evidence that terrorist groups viewed the games as havens to communicate and plot operations.

During Smith’s 6 years on Eve, he used the game to communicate covert messages with the US State Department. Being the perfect cover, online games like Eve provide a pathway of communication between the US government and overseas operatives on nearly secured channels because of the cryptic messages being passed back and forth.

The friend recalls that Smith was on Eve the night of the attack and conveyed that sirens could be heard in the distance, and suddenly would go offline, then pop back up. In the last communication, Smith said “GUNFIRE”, logged off – and never returned. – See more at: https://www.occupycorporatism.com/state-department-covers-up-ambassador-stevens-death-at-rented-villa-in-benghazi/#sthash.DWzBGG2S.dpuf

Beck accuse Sean Smith and his colleagues of either working with the CIA or of being CIA agents, and that some of Smith’s final messages to the outside world – which were sent to members of the EVE Online community – were actually coded, and intended for the CIA.

NSA is CRAZY

The agency’s internal presentation slides, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, show that when companies follow consumers on the Internet to better serve them advertising, the technique opens the door for similar tracking by the government. The slides also suggest that the agency is using these tracking techniques to help identify targets for offensive hacking operations.

According to the documents, the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ, are using the small tracking files or “cookies” that advertising networks place on computers to identify people browsing the Internet. The intelligence agencies have found particular use for a part of a Google-specific tracking mechanism known as the “PREF” cookie. These cookies typically don’t contain personal information, such as someone’s name or e-mail address, but they do contain numeric codes that enable Web sites to uniquely identify a person’s browser.

“In our Q1 earnings call of November 13th, we stated that product orders in China declined 18% in Q1 FY14, whereas in Q4 FY13, we referenced that our business in China had declined 6%,” a Cisco spokesperson told Ars. “By comparison, China bookings were up 8% in Q3 FY13. So, yes, there is a short-term trend of declining business in China, which we have acknowledged.”

“We shouldn’t have gathered economic intelligence under the guise of security – not with an ally,” Clinton told O Globo, a newspaper in Rio de Janeiro.

On Monday the companies, led by Google and Microsoft, presented a plan to regulate online spying and urged the United States to lead a worldwide effort to restrict it. They accompanied it with an open letter, in the form of full-page ads in national newspapers, including The New York Times, and a website detailing their concerns.

Apple, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, AOL and LinkedIn joined Google and Microsoft in saying that they believed in governments’ right to protect their citizens. But, they said, the spying revelations that began last summer with leaks of National Security Agency materials by Edward J. Snowden showed that “the balance in many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual.”

War on Unemployment Benefits Heats Up

One reason the unemployment insurance extension wasn’t included in the budget deal: cost. The budget deal includes about $22 billion in deficit reduction over two years. (It cuts $85 billion but allows spending caps to rise by $63 billion.)

Extending unemployment will cost about $25 billion for one year. It would undo the bill’s savings. That doesn’t mean Congress won’t do it. But they couldn’t credibly pair it with their modest budget bill.

Sen. Rand Paul says “black unemployment in America is double white unemployment” and “hasn’t budged” under President Obama. Actually, the black unemployment rate is lower now than when Obama took office, and the gap between the races is below the historical average.

As part of our Unity 4.3 announcement here at Unite \’13, we\’re thrilled to show off our native support for 2D development. Our users have been making 2D games for many years at this stage, and we felt it was about time we stepped up and acknowledged that fact, and brought native support for Sprites and related 2D workflows to Unity.

JavaScript Here to Stay? Or Near Death?

Today, JavaScript is no longer a startup, and it\’s no longer just startups that are using it. Companies of all sizes and levels of maturity build applications for the browser, and JavaScript is the language they use to build them. The demands that were once placed on languages like C/C++ and Java are now shifting to JavaScript, and that shift is exposing the language\’s limitations: performance and maintainability.

In 2008, however, Google released Chrome with its V8 JavaScript engine. Around the same time, Apple brought out Safari 4 with its Nitro (née Squirrelfish Extreme) engine. These engines brought something new to the world of JavaScript: high performance achieved through just-in-time (JIT) compilation. V8 and Nitro would convert JavaScript into pieces of executable code that the CPU could run directly, improving performance by a factor of three or more.

Android feels slower than iOS?

There are two core pieces to Android graphics: SurfaceFlinger and Skia. SurfaceFlinger is Android\’s compositor, used by the window manager to create and display windows (actually called surfaces.) SurfaceFlinger is implemented on top of OpenGL ES 1.x currently and can also use other hardware acceleration techniques when available (MDP, a 2D blitter on the T-Mobile G1, or hardware overlays on the Xoom.)

Each application renders into its windows (or surfaces) using primarily Skia. Skia is Android\’s 2D graphics library. You can also use OpenGL ES 1.x and 2.0 to render into a surface.

Android doesn\’t use DirectFB or X11 or any other existing Linux solution.

The presentation shows the design concepts about Android Graphics system including SurfaceFlinger, EGL, 2D accelerator, and Binder IPC.

Ouya\’s troubled state:

Overall it has been a frustrating process porting my game (still not done) that has taken much longer than I had hoped.

Balmer is going going gone :

Instead, sources said Ballmer\’s timeline had been moved up drastically — first by him and then the nine-member board, including his longtime partner and Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates — after all agreed that it was best if he left sooner than later.

\”There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time,\” Ballmer, 57, said in a statement. \”We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organization and we have an amazing senior leadership team. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company\’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction.\”

Xbox One < WinRT?

The key gist is simple: this week, Microsoft made its pitch to developers to build for its two key, and connected, platforms, Windows and Windows Phone. The shared Windows core of each was an obviously important topic both in keynotes, and sessions.

In a nutshell, this was our experience covering Microsoft Build 2013 this week at the Moscone Center.

\”I\’m not diminishing Sony\’s performance claims and I wasn\’t trying to be arrogant or dismissive,\” Penello wrote in a NeoGAF thread which reacted to his initial comment: \”The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless\”.

On paper, the specs of the next-gen Android console seem formidable enough. The Ouya runs on a vidia Tegra 3 Quad-core 1.7GHz CPI and is accompanied by a 520MHz Nvidia GeForce ULP GPU, offers 1GB DDR3 memory and 8GB of internal flash memory storage, operates on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a custom Oyua user interface, and features a wireless controller.

Ouya Review

Let\’s say everything goes exactly right for Ouya. Every good game in the Play Store becomes available to Ouya, Netflix and Amazon decide to play nice with the device, and the ROM and hacker community explode and make every app and many more available to the nascent platform. Then and only then, Ouya can be viable — if it can combine a decent set-top box with a decent gaming platform, it may have a case to make for your $99. But those are a lot of cards that have to fall a particular way, and without them the Ouya is a lot more like a Raspberry Pi than an Xbox 360.

Anyway that was my experience with the console. It\’s still early, but the platform seems to be shaping up nicely. Only time will tell if it can actually grab the attention of gamers everywhere.

It\’s difficult not to weigh the Ouya\’s current shortcomings against all of its grand, much-publicized promise, but all of that grandiosity has to be reconciled with an important fact: The Ouya costs $99. Even if competent mobile ports are the best games the Ouya ever gets, that\’s an incredibly low barrier of entry for consumers and developers alike. How many good games does it take to be considered a good return on a $99 investment? One? Five? 10?

XBox One For Devs

So the leaders of the indie game community clearly weren\’t thrilled by the Xbox One reveal. But does that mean that Microsoft is hanging them out to dry? Possibly. An independent developer who has worked with Microsoft in the past told NBC News that \”premium\” has become something of a buzzword for the company\’s new console, as if to emphasize that the company wants to maintain a strong hand in curating all gaming content that appears on XBLA.

A few developers have weighed in on the Xbox One reveal, with many citing confusion over why we have to have Kinect 2 enabled all the time, and why the main focus was on the television aspect of the console — and not the games.

Microsoft on Thursday revealed new details about its \”NUads,\” which are coming to Xbox Live this fall. NUads are interactive advertisements that put the Kinect\’s motion-sensing and voice-detecting abilities to work.

In an application filed in December 2010 but just made public last week, Microsoft sought to patent an advertising engine that gauges people\’s emotional states based on their search queries, emails, instant messages and use of online games, as well as facial expressions, speech patterns and body movements. The ad engine is device-agnostic; as Microsoft noted in its application, \”client devices\” could include personal digital assistants, smart phones, laptops, PCs and gaming devices.

A patent filed by Microsoft indicates that Kinect could count the number of viewers watching (or playing) content and allow the content supplier to charge a fee per person.
