  • Fedora 27 released — The Workstation edition of Fedora 27 features GNOME 3.26. In the new release, both the Display and Network configuration panels have been updated, along with the overall Settings panel appearance improvement.
  • Firefox 57 arrives — It’s by far the biggest update we’ve had since we launched Firefox 1.0 in 2004
  • There’s an option for people who don’t like change — a fork of the Mozilla code-base pre-Servo/Rust… Basically for those not liking the direction of Firefox with v57 rolling out the Quantum changes, etc.
  • Ubuntu Unity 7 flavour might be on the horizon — A proposal to create a new community Ubuntu flavor which uses the Unity 7 desktop by default is gathering support within the Ubuntu community.
  • LTS kernel 4.14 released — Anyway, go out and test the new 4.14 release, that is slated to be the
next LTS kernel – and start sending me pull request for the 4.15 merge
    window.
  • RISC-V support may be coming to 4.15 — RISC-V is hoping to see mainline with Linux 4.15. We’ve known for a while now about their mainline ambitions for 4.15 and a pull request was sent today, but it remains to be seen yet if Linus Torvalds will pull it for this merge window.
  • Red Hat announces ARM version of RHEL — Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 for ARM, the first commercial release for this architecture.
  • Oneplus backdoor — OnePlus accidentally left in place a diagnostic testing application made by Qualcomm. After decompiling this application, he discovered that it can be exploited to grant root access—effectively acting as a backdoor.

  • Samsung enable Linux on their phones — Linux desktops will become available if users plug their phones into the DeX Station, the device that lets a Galaxy 8 run a Samsung-created desktop-like environment when connected to the DeX and an external monitor
  • Purism Now Shipping Their Laptops With Intel ME Disabled — Purism has announced today all laptops to be shipping from their company will now have the Intel Management Engine (ME) disabled.
  • Purism partner with Nextcloud on end-to-end encrypted storage — Purism plans to include Nextcloud in the Librem 5 phone, as well as within PureOS for its Librem 13 and Librem 15 laptops. Additionally, Purism will be discussing with Nextcloud about a future Purism NAS that runs completely free software including Nextcloud and services.
  • LVFS/fwupd need donations — At the moment the secure part of the LVFS is hosted in a dedicated Scaleway instance, so any additional donations would be spent on paying this small bill and perhaps more importantly buying some (2nd hand?) hardware to include as part of our release-time QA checks.
  • Linux Kernel Community Enforcement Statement — It adopts the same termination provisions we are all familiar with from GPL-3.0 as an Additional Permission giving companies confidence that they will have time to come into compliance if a failure is identified. Their ability to rely on this Additional Permission will hopefully re-establish user confidence and help direct enforcement activity back to the original purpose we have all sought over the years — actual compliance.
  • Ubuntu 17.10 released — Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including
a new 4.13-based kernel, glibc 2.26, gcc 7.2, and much more.
Ubuntu Desktop has had a major overhaul, with the switch from Unity as
our default desktop to GNOME3 and gnome-shell.
  • Happy 13th Birthday — Ubuntu 4.10 ‘Warty Warthog’ wasn’t the most glamorous looking release, but it offered open-source enthusiasts of the day a simple, straightforward install from a single CD. The distro was notable for trying to “detect as much hardware as possible, simplifying the X install.”
GNOME 2.8, Firefox 0.9, Evolution 2.0 and OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 were among the software assembled for the formative release.
  • Ubuntu MATE — After six months of tireless work we present Ubuntu MATE 17.10, by far the best release we’ve ever produced.
  • Xubuntu — Accelerated video playback with Intel hardware should now work more reliably out of the box.

Ubuntu Turns 10

Ubuntu with Unity 7

If we’re honest, a review of Ubuntu 14.10 could be summarized simply as:

“For those who love Ubuntu, 14.10 is more of what you love. And not much else, for better or worse.”

But Ubuntu 14.10 also offers an appealing playground to check out some of the latest desktop technologies.

  • Ubuntu 14.10 will be supported for 9 months for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Core, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin along with all other flavours. This 9 month window of time is too short for a long-term deployment, but just about right for the enthusiast.

  • Linux kernel 3.16

Kubuntu

Kubuntu is releasing two flavors: One with Plasma 4 for stability, and one with Plasma 5 to try the new hotness. Both can be grabbed from Kubuntu.org.

Updates to Plasma 5.1

Xubuntu

Xubuntu is an elegant and easy-to-use operating system. Xubuntu comes with Xfce, which is a stable, light and configurable desktop environment.

Ubuntu MATE

Ubuntu MATE is a stable, easy-to-use operating system with a configurable desktop environment. Ideal for those who want the most out of their desktops, laptops and netbooks and prefer a traditional desktop metaphor. With modest hardware requirements it is suitable for modern workstations and older hardware alike.

Ubuntu GNOME

Ubuntu GNOME is Ubuntu with a pure GNOME Shell experience as opposed to Unity.

Ubuntu GNOME includes GNOME 3.12, but can be upgraded to 3.14 using the following PPAs: ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 and ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging

Lubuntu

Lubuntu is the LXDE-based variant of Ubuntu for low resource usage and targeting older computers.

Lubuntu includes LXDE but LXQt is available for installation via the following PPA: ppa:lubuntu-dev/daily

Other flavors released this cycle:

Edubuntu: Education-targeted flavor using Unity as the desktop environment.
Ubuntu Studio: Xubuntu-based flavor using Xfce as the desktop environment targeting graphic artists, photographers, musicians, and audio/video production.
Ubuntu Kylin: Ubuntu Kylin is the official Chinese version of Ubuntu. It uses Unity as the desktop environment.

Linus Torvalds Regrets Alienating Developers with Strong Language

“One of the reasons we have this culture of strong language, that admittedly many people find off-putting, is that when it comes to technical people with strong opinions and with a strong drive to do something technically superior, you end up having these opinions show up as sometimes pretty strong language,” said Linus Torvalds.

KDE – Plasma 5.1 Brings Back Many Popular Features

October 15, 2014.
Today, KDE releases Plasma 5.1.0, the first release containing new features since the release of Plasma 5.0 this summer. Plasma 5.1 sports a wide variety of improvements.

Docker 1.3 Improves Container Security

Among the big additions is the ability to check images with the using of a digital signature. By having the digital signature, it provides users with an additional layer of confidence to know that an image has not been tampered with.

Docker container support coming to Microsoft’s next Windows Server release

Under the terms of the agreement announced today, the Docker Engine open source runtime for building, running and orchestrating containers will work with the next version of Windows Server. The Docker Engine for Windows Server will be developed as a Docker open source project, with Microsoft participating as an active community member. Docker Engine images for Windows Server will be available in the Docker Hub. The Docker Hub will also be integrated directly into Azure so that it is accessible through the Azure Management Portal and Azure Gallery. Microsoft also will be contributing to Docker’s open orchestration application programming interfaces (APIs).

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! Arrives on Linux

Development team Aspyr, responsible for the Mac and Linux ports, worked with Gearbox and 2K Games to ensure same-day support for the Tux-faithful arrived alongside the Mac, Windows and console releases of the game.

Linux gamers get access to all of the same features, downloadable content add-ons, settings and multiplayer functionality as their Windows and OS X counterparts thanks to the Unreal 3 engine the title is built on.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set between the previous two Borderlands games to reveal the story behind Handsome Jack’s rise to villainy.

Note: October 14 marks its North American release only. It goes live in Australasia on October 16. The European release follows on October 17.

VCs Pushing Young Entrepreneurs to Build Proprtary Products that Lock-In

To some extent, I think this goes back to the pernicious myth of the “sustainable competitive advantage.” This is a line you hear all too often from venture capitalists, and as I’ve said for over a decade, it’s misleading in the extreme.

Thanks to users’ input on the issue, ChromeOS developers’ decision to drop ext* filesystem support on the file manager is being reversed.

Thanks for all of your feedback on this bug. We’ve heard you loud and clear.

We plan to re-enable ext2/3/4 support in Files.app immediately. It will come back, just like it was before, and we’re working to get it into the next stable channel release.

Please star this bug to get the latest updates. We’ll post everything here.

Shellshock Reaction Overblown?

_This is a defense of the most prolific and dedicated public servant that has graced the world in my lifetime. One man has added hundreds of billions, if not trillions of dollars of value to the global economy. This man has worked tirelessly for the benefit of everyone around him. It is impossible to name a publicly traded company that has not somehow benefitted from his contributions, and many have benefitted to the tune of billions. In return for the countless billions of wealth that people made from the fruits of his labor, he was rewarded with poverty and ridicule. Now that the world is done taking from him, they are heading to the next step of villifying him as incompetent.

Matt’s How-to:

Having established why Gnome Nanny fails (not updated and incompatible), I have found over the years the only reliable method for offering parental controls on Ubuntu is to use either parental controls through a router or on a specific PC via OpenDNS.

Note: if you want this only block content on a single PC, only use OpenDNS on that computer.

  1. Browse opendns.com and create an account. Then login, this will bring you to your dashboard.
  2. Since we’re only adding the single computer in this example, look the right of the page and add Add a network. Click that button.
  3. This will fill in your ISP assigned IP address for you. Click on Add this network.
  4. A new popup will appear asking you to assign a “friendly” name to this network. Do so, then make sure you’ve checked off “yes, it is dynamic” (as most people have dynamic IP addresses).
  5. Ignoring the option to install anything, close this window by clicking Done.
  6. Now click on the IP address in the main screen area, this brings you to the parental control area.
  7. Select the level of content filtering you wish to use on this computer. Click apply. (I recommend checking the customize option for each section before choosing)
  8. Now you need to install a client that will keep your dynamic IP address, in tune with OpenDNS. From a terminal:

sudo apt-get install ddclient

  1. Once the configuration window appears, use your keyboard to select Other, then tab to Ok.
  2. The next step from this same terminal dialog is to type, then tab to Ok:

updates.opendns.com

  1. In the next window, select dyndns2, tab to Ok.
  2. And in the next dialog, type in the username for your OpenDNS account; ie, your email used.
  3. Still with me? Good. Now you need to enter the network interface used. If it’s a wired network, it might be eth0 or if it’s wifi, perhaps wlan0 or wlan1. Open a separate terminal and do a ifconfig if you’re unsure.
  4. Remember that “Friendly” network name we created previously in the OpenDNS dashboard? Enter it when prompted for your dyndns qualified domain name(s). Then tab to Ok.
  5. With this finished, you will want to revisit the terminal again and type:

sudo gedit /etc/ddclient.conf

  1. With this conf file open, we’re going to make sure the settings took correctly. Check for the following: username, password, ssl set to yes, etc. Save, then close.
    17) The next step is to make sure OpenDNS is to be used exclusively for DNS on this machine.

sudo gedit /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf

  1. Ignore all of the text listed, scroll down the to the bottom and paste in the following:

supersede domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220;

  1. Save the file and close the editor.
  2. Rather than merely restarting networking to let the settings take effect, be extra safe and just reboot. And you should be good to go. The ddclient and OpenDNS will now do the content filtering you need, to keep your kids safe. You’re all set!
