PAX Attax Report! | Jupiter@Nite | 9.7.10

We spent the weekend at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) and we’ve seen everything from an exclusive look at Duke Nukem Forever to a concert with Jonathan Coulton.

It’s our full report on everything PAX Prime 2010, and what impressed us the most, what let us down, and what surprised us!

What is PAX?
Penny Arcade Expo

  • Created in 2004 by authors of the Penny Arcade webcomic
  • Hailed as a weekend-long celebration of gamer culture (not just the games themselves)

Chris and Jeremy attended last year…

  • This year was larger, more crowded.
  • Also larger budget for individual booths.
  • And more booth babes!
  • First year as Media/Press

Same as last year, would like to see return:

  • Heavy emphasis on indie game titles (The PAX 10)
  • Apps for mobile devices were very nice this year

Improvements for next year:

  • Panel improvements
  • Something to solve crowd issues (tight aisles, body odor, noise)

Alan’s First Impressions!

  • poopie

The CONCERT, as a commentary on Gamer Culture

  • DS screens in lieu of lighters, during ballads
  • Rockband 3 to wild applause of ~3000 nerds
  • …and Wil Wheaton
  • White guys wrapping about hating blogs, and such
  • Headlined by Jonathan Coulton (writer of the Portal theme)

Best Booths:
Need for Speed – Hot Pursuit
Disney Interactive
Little Big Planet 2
Fallout: New Vegas

Disappointments:
All of Microsoft’s booths – cheap, no presentation
Duke Nukem Gameplay

Surprises:
Duke Nukem Appearance
Age of Empires Online
