DuckDuckGo Blog : Our 2016 Open Source Donations
Thank you all for the nominations for our 2016 open source donations program. As usual, there was a wide variety of projects that could benefit from additional funding and fit the theme of raising the standard of trust online. We try to make this a joint effort with the commuity and you didn’t disappoint! Hear Gabriel, the founder of DuckDuckGo, announce this year’s recipients
Ubuntu 16.10 Isn’t Going To Use Mir / Unity 8 By Default – Phoronix
Similar to the current situation with existing Ubuntu releases, Unity 8 and Mir will be available as an opt-in feature for users wanting to upgrade their desktop, but Unity 7 and the faithful X.Org Server is planned to be the default for Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak.
Plasma Mobile : New base system… Ubuntu Touch?
Our initial Ubuntu Touch base was Ubuntu 15.04. Eventually, our image started to diverge from the Ubuntu Touch base. For example, we upgraded _libhybris to upstream version_because libhybris available in Ubuntu archive diverged too much from upstream to be useful in our context. We also had to upgrade to a newer Qt version, and we also needed to upgrade the base system to Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) because we did not have the resources for managing different branches for packaging the latest git KF5/Plasma for 15.04.
OpenWRT Gets Forked By Some Of Its Own Developers As LEDE Project – Phoronix
LEDE will continue to focus upon being “a great embedded Linux distribution” with predictable release cycles and transparent decision making. Among the stated reasons for this “reboot of the OpenWRT community” is that the active core developer count was low, unreliable infrastructure, lack of communication and coordination around the project, not enough people with commit access, and lack of focus on stability and documentation.
Your power management system?
I am starting to play with the power management of my computers running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (might downgrade but sticking with it for now) and I wanted to know what everyone’s choice for Power Management is, I am looking at powertop but I don’t know how well it will work.
TING
Subsonic (music streaming software) is no longer open source, starting with 6.0 release
Sorry, no. Starting with 6.0, Subsonic is no longer open-source (the source code for older versions is still available).
The main reason for this change is that the source contains some software license codes I have purchased and that shouldn’t be used by forked projects.
